To be honest, Taiwan treat their Indigenous people much, much, better than let's say the People's Republic of China or the United States. what exactly are these prey species destroying? the environment balances itself over time. if there are too many prey species, then predator populations increase and bring it back into control. Its only an issue if the animals are introduced in an area where their natural predators are absent or if they are ruining the land like deer do in Britain, preventing forests decimated by humans from growing back.

Possession of firearms actually used to be mandatory in Switzerland. Those who were serving in the military had to keep their service rifle at home in the event they needed to deploy quickly. However that law changed a few years ago and it now allowed members of the military at the option to store their rifle at their local base's Armory if they so chose.

Military service is already mandatory in Taiwan. The reason why civilian ownership is not allowed is because of fears of internal revolt by domestic separatists, Japanese loyalists or Chinese Communist sympathizers. The country was not stable for a long time. Civilian ownership only works if everyone is on the same page.

@@Red9san That is one reason why firearm ownership is so tightly controlled in the Republic of Korea too (the communist DPRK neighbor to their north). I don't know how gun laws works in Taiwan (I've read their is a license available for firearms in Taiwan), but, generally speaking, in the ROK civilians can own a firearm if they obtain a license (hard to do) but, generally speaking, only shotguns are licensed and only for purposes like hunting (which also requires an additional license). Also, when the gun is not in use, it must be stored at a range or at a local police station. The reason for all this is that the government fears communist infiltration from their neighbors (the DPRK and the PRC).

I am a Taiwanese. Taiwan is different from Japan.Taiwan is very small and has unique geography. There are many unique creatures that can only be found on Taiwan Island. The only home for the creatures here is on Taiwan Island, so the number of each creature is very small. Precious species. Humans must restrain their desires.

For birds and small game I suppose you could use steel bb's placed between two wads, like a muzzle loading shotgun. With a nail gun blank it should be quite effective.

But when there are less than 1,000 animals left and they are killed for any strange reason, the Han people must take the initiative to stop such species extinction behavior.

Interesting idea, teach a man to fish approach. It could be another tradition they can pass on. Better idea than just handing them factory produced rifles they have no experience or ability to repair in the field quickly or repair properly back home in the village.

As an American homemade firearms enthusiast, I could definitely see myself getting involved with this. I would really love to do that at some point.

@@willpittman7593 I've done quite a bit with 3D printers, and I've been very impressed by ECM rifling. Recently, though, I got a mini lathe, and I've been working on some stuff with that. With modern home shop production techniques, their builds could be improved substantially and still be self-made, I'm very certain.

They occasionally have great documentaries. May not be stuff you are interested in but they still make quality docs just not in volumes. They got funding cut when Disney bought them so blame them. I honestly miss the weekly/daily news they had.

It is actually perfectly legal to own factory made semi auto pistol and rifle for civilians in Taiwan under the "self defence firearms regulation licence", the problem is that only the uber rich and connected people are able to jump though the intentionally complex bureaucratic hurdle to obtain such licence. (fire arm ownership is still protected under the right to property of our constitution, so a out right ban of firearm will be unconstitutional, and thus our lawmakers use such laws to achieve a defacto ban on firearm ownership) The easiest way to deal with this conundrum is to amend the "Self defence firearm regulation" to amend the section of hunters registration of the legal codes, to give individual hunter the permit to own safe firearms. However politician on both sides of the debate focus on "collective rights" vs "public safety" and rarely talk about individual right, and the problem will never really be solved if the politician would not pull their heads out of the collective mentality.

That's cause people down here straddling the border all believe they should each get to kill one deer/bear/moose/ per season and most don't care whether they can eat the animal or not . It does get expensive to hire hundreds of people to keep track of all registered firearms, oversee the populations of the hunted animals and provide tagging to ensure that over hunting does not occur or illegal hunting/poaching can also be avoided or tracked . The bad actors for the most part will not interact with these systems. The good part is that the group that can enforce hunting/conservation law and act against the bad actors when notified . If you are Native and have a status card it is your responsibility to know whats good or bad , you are also allowed much more freedoms when hunting . I dont know how legal a crossbow would be for hunting there but is acceptable here. a weapon hundreds of years old and killed animals since the first day it shot. a fire arm is often times not even necessary to trap and obtain food . is it laziness that leads to gun usage over traditional arms?

The Taiwanese government should allow them to hunt with actual rifles instead of some homemade piece of crap that can explode in their faces at any moment. What the gov should do is to regulate the minimum/ maximum calibre for hunting specific game and have a system for background check and firearm license application. A total ban on civilian firearm ownership while turning a blind eye to dodgy firearm manufacturing benefits no one.

Chiang Kai-Shek of the Republic of China followed the core tenets laid out by his predecessor Sun Yat-Sen, which centred around the idea of nationalism and Han racial superiority, calling for the forced assimilation of all ethnic minorities. It was Chairman Mao of China who condemned such mentality, labelling it "Big bourgeois nationalism" and instead advocating for ethnic diversity.

Han Chinese did not reach the mountainous areas. Japan actually was the first country to conquer the aboriginal regions of the mountains. After WWII in 1945, KMT from China ordered the aboriginal people to adopt Chinese names in the first year of its rule in the island. Btw President Tsai’s got aboriginal heritage from her grandmother. She is from Paiwan tribe.

Due to the lack of natural hunters, the US government uses a hunting season for hunters to cut down on the extremely large herbivorous populations. With proper regulation, like these indigenous people are looking for, hunting is actually a boom for ecosystems. The mass extinction has more to do with habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, pollution, and deforestation - get your facts straight.

@@sirius9108 European hunter here, in my country there are no laws regarding ownership of magazines (only their use in actual hunting - anything goes on the range) and semi-autos are perfectly attainable, if not encouraged for certain types of hunting (boar mainly). Also, sport shooters can own everything from AR-15s and Kalashnikovs to full-auto submachine guns as long as they're part of a club which competes using those weapons. Collectors can own artillery pieces in fully working condition. Your generalisation is obviously misguided. The issue in the United States when it relates to gun violence is not the gun itself, it is the attitude and culture surrounding it. And as long as a combination of neoliberalism and fascism continues to rule the country it will not change. Sadly, my country is headed in that very same direction.

Plus: the opportunity to have their youth and most talented entrepreneurs get knowledge and access to 3D printing. They already use wood but I assume printing would be of great use

Perhaps those in the west that have this knowledge may find refuge in the East where making guns is not just permitted but very much sought after.

Knowledge would definitely help tremendously, however, a big part of their problem seems to be the lack of proper tools. I would imagine if given a mill, a lathe, some quality steel, and an infinite supply of electricity, these guys would be turning out masterpieces in short order

@@kabardino1337 They need equipment and proper materials to work with. In parts of africa the steering shaft of cars were used for muzzle loading shot guns. Modern gunsmiths have CNC equipment these days. The government would not allow that to be. One of the easiest guns to make if you have some rudimentary equipment is a submachine gun. 3D printing, all of the working guns I have seen on youtube from it are using a lot of high quality steel parts in the design.

It takes money, lots of it to set up a real shop. They might be better off building crossbows with native materials if the proper steel and tools isn't available for rifles

@@belen3732 any reasoning for that statement? Because last time I checked most gun deaths are suicides and gang crimes unfortunately. You almost never see a law abiding citizen randomly grab a gun and shoot people.

Good laws are those that strike the right balance between respect for individual freedom and public safety. Compromises are inevitable and depend on the situation in each country. The main problems in the United States are the extreme social and economic inequalities that drive the most disadvantaged into crime, the lack of good quality public social security that is inexpensive for citizens and that would enable better management of psychological and psychiatric problems, the mediocre quality of the public school system and the extreme tensions ( ideological, racial, political and religious ) that exist in this country. Other countries can afford to have lax regulations on the possession of firearms because they have dealt with these problems - the example that often comes up, but which remains true, would be Switzerland (I am neither Swiss, nor particularly in favour of firearms btw ). My thoughts exactly. Do something based on Thompson Center Contender chambered in 7.62 x 39mm or a pistol round. Let them work with a military armorer, pick a standard that makes sense for a normal shot distance and the size of the prey. Register the hunters and the guns.

It's about the price, it's not worth it to make a high quality rifle and the ammo when hunting is in a grey area. The price of proper equipment outweigh the return of meat.

American here. I think the reason why governments and UN around the world are trying to take away guns from the hands of the people is so they can have a monopoly on violence in their country. I am still saddened by why Taiwan isn’t raising a armed militia or atleast stockpiling ammunition and guns, with China making repeated threats of invasion. As a Taiwanese, throwing guns at an issue won't help the conflict between Taiwan and the Mainland. No matter which side you are on, armed or not, both sides will lose immensely regardless if we were to fight, as it would bring on a World War 3. Even then, Mainland China has continuously threatened Taiwan's own sovereignty with war or forced annexation for years, even decades, yet nothing has changed about it. We also already have military conscription for citizens that reach the age of 18, due to Mainland China's hostility.

You wouldn't. Your point is heavily based on the false assumption that everyone in Taiwan is on the same page. Also , giving everyone weapons isn't going to deter PRC , that's not how it works

Generally thats true. But then again I wonder what are the traditional weapons the indigenous people used? One of them said himself that a rifle is not an original weapon of the natives. So why can´t they just go on using their traditional weapons? I guess it might have been bows and arrows or something less efficient than a gun. As a consequence of that, they could still go hunting without endangering the wildlife as animal populations cannot be overhunted with traditional weapons.
