Cressida Cowper is a lot of things, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people would not associate the word "honesty" wth her, however I do think her actions and reactions are born out of a honest reaction to a world that leaves her little options to do otherwise. Do let me know if you agree or disagree.

she is still cruel tho. the way she ripped penelopes dress in front of lord debling reminded me how she intentionally poured her drink on penelope in front of colin in season 1. and dont remind me how she bullied daphne for no reason. yikes
@ChroniclesofNoria
@ChroniclesofNoria 2 месяца назад
Oh I’m not arguing that she isn’t cruel. She is. Very as a matter of fact. The point I’m making though is that her cruelty is a response to a society that demands it of her. Look at her conversation with Eloise the next day after the party. She legit thought that what she did was good. That she needed to put Pen in her place so that Penelope wouldn’t be a threat to her prospects. Yes we deserve to note how cruel she is, but I do think that we also need to recognize how cruel the world of Bridgerton is to them all, especially the young girls who can only see each other as competition. With Daphne she didn’t bully her without any reason though. I’m trying to remember but she only bullied Daphne after Daphne went outside and had her honour compromised by the Duke. As far as Cressida is concerned, theirs is a society that values the chastity of its women and Daphne did something “shameful” which is why when she meets her at the Modiste, she basically implies that she expected better from Daphne who she believes trapped the Duke into marrying her. Prior to that, she was upset that even though to her, Daphne already “had” the Duke, she still went ahead to “take away” the Prince who had up to that point, been paying attention to Cressida until Daphne “showed up” as being available. Even her mother confirmed it that the Cressida only had a chance with the Prince cuz Daphne wasn’t interested. Only for Daphne to later act interested and pull the Prince away from Cressida. I do think if we are being fair and honest to ourselves, everyone would be pissed if we were in Cressida’s shoes. But I do agree that she was absolutely horrid to Pen.
@lauren1937

Indeed. She is awfully cruel. Idc how much society pits the ladies against each other. I don’t see anyone else going to those extremes and far as physically assaulting another lady’s ensemble.
@ChroniclesofNoria
@ChroniclesofNoria 2 месяца назад
True we don’t. But at the same time we never really get the perspectives of the other ladies. They all exist at the sidelines. But we know that one of them for example, overhead Eloise and Cressida talking and in the course of that evening had spread the damning gossip that had everyone mocking Penelope about her asking Colin for help in finding a husband. That was also cruel. So I do believe that Cressida isn’t the only cruel one in their world. We just haven’t seen it cuz we don’t get others’ perspective 🤷🏾‍♀️

Finally, some critical thinking applied to Cressida. Too many people want her to remain a two dimensional villain because hating mean girls is fun? This is the show that made Anthony the heroic male lead, it would be criminal to not apply some of that mindset to other characters. I feel like the show viewers criticize (female) side characters too harshly because they forget that the Bridgerton family is not normal. Their privilege is comical, even among the ton. They are rich, beautiful and well respected. They are all healthy and had loving, happy parents as role models. Violet Bridgerton is a loving, understanding mother because she has been loved by her own father and husband. She doesn’t need to pressure her children to do anything because she has four healthy sons and unlimited money, meaning her children are less ruthless and selfish than their peers, particularly Penelope and Cressida. The Bridgerton’s can afford to be nice, they can afford to wax poetic about true love, because their position and futures have been secured since birth. You don’t have to like Cressida, in fact you probably shouldn’t - she’s rather unlikeable. But Cressida is an antagonist, not a villain. If Daphne gets a pass for ruining Cressida’s chances with the prince and not even keeping him because she “had” to get married (she didn’t), Cressida (who legitimately HAS to get married) deserves a more nuanced discussion as well.
@ChroniclesofNoria

Yes and yes!!! Glad you enjoyed the video and I loved the points you raised!! I agree. I view Cressida as more an antagonist than a villain in the story, and as someone who HATED Anthony in the first season, the redemption arc they gave him in season 2?? Whew!! Talk about putting in the work, giving his actions, context and his motivations, depth, and they had us rooting for him with a quickness. Lol. I wonder why a lot of Bridgerton viewers don't want to extend that same courtesy to the other characters as well. Except maybe for Nigel Berbrooke. That fucker can, and should ALWAYS choke! Lol. I would love to hear your take on Violet vs Danbury vs Portia vs Araminta. What we do know about Violet from QC shows us that Violet has always had the option of seeking a love marriage because she comes from money, while the main series shows us that someone like Portia has to 'scheme' to survive season after season in the Ton. Danbury had to learn to be survivor, but her husband's death (which left her as wealthy widow unlike Portia) has given her a 'it works out in the end' look on some things. The fact that after all the pain and humiliation she went through in her marriage, she gets to keep the house, the kids and most importantly, the money and close companionship with the Queen may be the reason why she still believes in love and romance - her struggle came to end. Portia and Araminta on the other hand don't seem to be that fortunate. One may be a widow and the other still married but both of them seem to be the women who have been 'punished' the most for being a woman in the time they're living in. Violet, Portia, and Araminta's stance on society, hierarchy, and romance are clearly seen in their children: Eloise is picky and opinionated because she comes from money, she has options; Penelope yearns for the Bridgerton life but her side hustle as Whistledown shows that she is in fact, Portia's daughter (a smart, scheming survivor); and Cressida like her mother follows the rules of the Ton bar for bar but still can't seem to win and has to learn to settle or face being an outcast or ridiculed.

I wish they would get rid of Lady Whistledown. I am starting to find her narration annoying. A lot of the time the scenes would be better without her commentary on them, and they're getting a bit silly when she's saying things that won't end up in the column since they're changed that same night before Penelope has had the chance to go and write the column. Is Penelope narrating her own life as Whistledown now? Because she really should get rid of her then. They didn't have Lady Whistledown after the fourth book anyway.
@TraceyJean
@TraceyJean Месяц назад
Penelope's weight would be a plus in this society since it's proof her family has money to keep her fed and she's got great child bearing hips for heirs. It's probably the reason her mother is able to find matches for her older sisters and hold them off until she has money for a dowry. Lady Featherington (I feel) is subconsciously hurting Penelope's chances at marriage so she can have a spinster to care for her in old age. She has no sons, so she won't be a dowager like Bridgerton; her daughters will have their own households, and she knows Pen is smart enough to figure out how to keep her fed and clothed.
@ChroniclesofNoria
@ChroniclesofNoria Месяц назад
True. I do think though that theirs is an era [and please correct me if I'm wrong] where they had cartoonists lampooning George IV, who is ironically the son of Queen Charlotte and George III, for being obese. So sure being plump was a plus in their society but I do think there is an extent to what they would consider plump enough. But also, Bridgerton is filled with so many skinny people that it makes Pen not being as skinny as the other women and young girls of the ton stand out. Like the times might not have been as fatphobic as we are now, but the casting director migt have had just a smidgen of it. As for her older sisters, we aren't given details into how Prudence snagged Henry Dankworth, and if maybe Portia played a role in that, but she had nothing to do with Albion's interest in Philippa and was pleasantly surprised to see their interest in each other, which is what made her so furious that Archibald had gambled away their daughters' dowries. I do agree that she knows that Pen is smart enough to take care of the both of them in their old age, but I really do believe that Portia wasn't maliciously trying to sabotage Pen's chances. She just legit thinks that her daughter doesn't stand a chance with how different she is from the other girls of the ton, and is accepting and okay with that. Not to go into that many spoilers from the books but we do see a glimpse of it in the trailer for 3B but she is positively delighted when Colin Bridgerton comes calling and asks her for her daughter's hand in marriage. It was a hilarious scene in the books. To me anyway. Lol.

@9:09 Yes. The Queen and Lady Danbury are one of the few friendships we see and we know they were never out in society together. So that says alot about the point Cressida was making. Both were already married by the time they met and they have the longest friendship.....we could even joke that Pen debuted before Eloise and they remained friends but it was the same season in which they were out together that their friendship ended. For other reasons but still 😅
@ave_rie

I dislike Cressida’s meanness but I sincerely hope she is given a way to grow out of that cruelty, better if she learns that before/outside marriage. At the same time, I worry they’ll leave her out of future seasons once she gets married and somehow the Mondriches will still have ample screentime. I’m just hoping for diversity in the ways the characters grow. So far, all growth has been centered on marriage and love. But of course, I also recognize Bridgerton is somewhat of a fairytale love story a la Disney prince +princesses so that might not happen.

I think that they have that relationship where one person clearly thinks and acts like they are friends and the other doesn't. The sharing of secrets has always been one-sided. Like Violet is always telling Agatha deeply personal stuff, but Agatha is very reserved and keeps quite to herself. That's why I don't think that they are friends cuz to be friends, it has to go both ways, and Violet didn't even know until he showed up, that Lady Danbury had a brother.

Your theory intrigues me and I see a lot of value in it. However, I would like to offer one small addendum of my own. The reason I think we are seeing so much of Cressida is because she will play a crucial role in what I presume will be Benedict's love story next season. SPOILERS FOR BENEDICT'S BOOK INCOMING. Sophie, Benedict's love interest, lives under the authority of her stepmother and two stepsisters. Her stepmother is called Araminta, just like Cressida's mother is in the show. There is also a financial incentive for Araminta to provide Sophie with housing while keeping her illegitimate status a secret to avoid scandal. My theory is that if Cressida becomes Whistledown or marries in Benedict's season like her book counterpart it will relieve the Cowpers of their financial reliance on Sophie. Sophie will be cast out and the wheels of fate that will bring her to Benedict will be set in motion. Whether Cressida fulfills her expected role as wicked stepsister remains to be seen. Personally, I think it would be more fun to see Cressida assume the role of Whistledown and act as a fairy godmother figure for them. But that's just a theory. A BRIDGERTON THEORY

I'm so fucking glad this channel got recommended to me. This is such a good video and your philosophy on characterization honestly makes me think you'd be a solid writer. You get intersecting motivations, understand conflict as catalyst, can empathize with character choices without endorsing them, or disagree with choices without wholesale condemnation of the person. Balance. Also you're just very funny, so that helps a lot, too. You saying Portia Featherington was a good mom gave me pause. But then I had to ask myself why you'd say so and how is she that much different from Cressida, who we've only begun to understand this season because she's not just a villain. Boom, reframing unlocked. Honestly, framing has so much to do with this. Eloise is honestly the most annoying "not like other girls" whiner to me at this point (though a dose of reality is improving her). If she'd been given a slightly different plot and family name she'd be just as villainous as Cressida or Penelope acting as Lady Whistledown. But she's also young and insecure and feels othered by society and her own jealousy. She is rattling cages rather daintily, but just like with Cressida, we're only annoyed by the cage when reminded of it. It's so easy to just be annoyed at these young girls for not being graceful within their bindings as some other characters might be, or to resent them when the cage of poverty is so much harder to escape. She gets grace from the story, and perhaps the best thing we can do when it comes to media is be curious even in our condemnation. We can afford a little grace for Cressida and a little hope that she'll wake up and be less comfortable inflicting pain on others just to alleviate her own pain. And she makes so much sense as the incumbent LW, that if the show doesn't make it so I'll be giving them Witcher level side eye. That is so much side eye, okay?

Actually, I find Cressida very interesting. Because she is clearly a prominent figure in society - likely due to family tree, and a fortune possibly greater than the Bridgertons (at least as they reference through the episodes). But at the same time, kind of a social outcast as well. I think she is seen as somewhat "powerful" or influential. But she is not seen as attractive or powerful. I don't know if it is intentional in the casting, but she is a lot taller than the other actresses, which would probably be intimidating to men in the Bridgerton era. Either way, she doesn't seem to have a lot of callers. She shows an abundance of wealth in her outfits, but not a lot of social ease. She struggles to make friends - which means she is not very popular among her peers. In the connections she do have, she tends to lead with manipulation, dominance and power games, rather than trying to find genuine connection. Except for Eloise, she tends to go for more submissive women where she can become the 'leader'. Causing the friendships to feel more hollow. She probably picked this up from her parents, and it is subconscious to some degree. But she may also be insecure/afraid to show her true selv, and how her parents will react if she let her guard down. I actually think she is very different from Regina George and other classic mean girls. Because while there are some fear and dislike for their abuse, they are almost worshipped, highly desired by all the men, and have a select group of other popular girls. They are manipulative, but they are better at doing it without others noticing, and they are somewhat liked by other girls as well. Cressida is by no means worshipped, not very desired by men, and her friend group are not very high social status/typical popular types. Her manipulation is more obvious, which makes her more disliked. Which could indicate she have been taught to be this way by her parents, but really don't like being this way. :)
@kayjayhay
@kayjayhay 2 месяца назад
I wonder if part of that is down to your critique, and if part of that is down to the utility of sex. In Mean Girls/modern era a girl like Regina can use sex with more ease than a Regency girl could. But of course she can only do that with a highly valued boyfriend. Cressida has no leeway there because she can't be aligned with a man unless he's courting her, and being courted without a proposal is a failure. So popularity with the boys will be fickle, and popularity with the girls ... well it's a catch-22. She likely was popular with them at first but the longer she remains unmarried, the less aspirational and at ease with herself she becomes. She's supposed to evolve into a wife with a social circle of wives to run, but she's stuck and so less likely to be a queen bee. I think Cressida is a blend of Regina and Gretchen with more shades of the latter because she can't seem to make herself happen. Or Regina in her "sweatpants are all that fit me right now" era. A wounded queen bee.

Ooooh. What a great perspective, especially with you highlighting her absence of desirability, when compared to Regina who wields her desirability as a social currency which is why Cady’s sabotage of her and the weight gain saw her losing that currency. Hmmm. I'm curious though. Why do you think she wouldn't survive a season? Especially if she has Madam Delacroix to guide her and can go to Pen for advice if she's stuck and needs help navigating things. Pen's present system requires only that she listens. Observes. Notes the gossip she hears, and then write about it. The only way she would have been caught would have been the distribution channel as I don't think she would have been as convincing a maid as Pen, but Pen's only finessed and perfected that angle by having Madam Delacroix handle things, so I am curious as to why you think she wouldn't survive taking on the mantle?

Interesting thoughts. A few thoughts come to mind for me. I don't know that Pen would part with Whistledown for Cressida to take over. Whistledown is witty and clever, I don't know if Cressida has the skill as a writer. Also I don't kniw that Cressida has the skill to do what Pen has done, Oen is successful because shebis ignored. Cressida has a distinctive voice and stands out. Similarly Eloise does not listen unless shouted at, she just talks at people and so I don't think she could take on Whistledown. We'll see though. Also I am still not feeling her redemption arc yet, for me the issue is that she is not remorseful for what she has done to Pen. She is cruel and only tempered herself because Eloise did not like it. The way she sees Penelope as less than or insignificant bothers me and her friendship with Eloise seems genuine but what if Eloise gets in the way of what she wants. At the end of the day Cressida is mercenary, yes because of her circumstances but that does not justify her behaviour. For me I need to see more growth before I can fully get on board with redemption. I think the beauty of Bridgerton is that the everyone is flawed, no one is perfect and watching them grow is a beautiful thing.
@ChroniclesofNoria
@ChroniclesofNoria Месяц назад
Thank you for your comment! Yes, everyone is flawed in Bridgerton which is something I enjoy tbh. lol. I don't know though if I would agree that Cressida isn't skilled as a writer because honestly, we have no idea what she's capable of as a writer. Hell the only reason why we as the audience learned that Colin is talented as a writer is because Pen happened to read his journal. If she hadn't, a lot of people would have also just as easily concluded that he can't write either. We need a situation to arise where we are privy to Cressida's writing before we can make that assumption, so that's why she's still an option for me. I do agree though that I don't see it being Eloise. I also think it's okay that you still aren't feeling her redemption arc. I don't even see it as a full redemption arc actually. More of a giving her character nuanced so that we as the audience are okay with whatever direction the writers decide to take her story in the rest of the series.

The idea of the Lady Whistledown mantle being passed on has serious merit! After all, big advice columns in our day like Dear Abby and Dear Prudence have legacy Advice Giving Personas being 'played' (for lack of a better term) by multiple people over the years. Why not a gossip columnist?

And they could even do as they do with the columnist, and have it be this passing of the torch where there are two Lady Whistledowns chatting in the column, as a way to announce that the baton is being passed on, but the gossip and the witty writing that the ton has come to love, will still remain strong.

We get three female friendships, but only 1 is among the young ones. The other friendships are Violet-Lady Danbury, and Lady Danbury and the Queen. But friendship is not painted as a commonplace thing among the girls. There's cliques painted though -- Cressida is leading her own Mean Girls group, essentially.

Oh very true. I understand her motivations but I would never choose to be her friend for all the money in the world 😭😭. Although as someone who had a “Yes” problem when I was in university (I could never say no to anyone and it was literally putting my ass in danger. My best friend had to put a stop to it with a quickness cuz that was around the time when I met her), I do think it’s sometimes okay to think only about her selves. Sometimes. Not all the time. But sometimes, definitely. Thank you for the comment ☺️
@kayjayhay
@kayjayhay 2 месяца назад
Her society necessitates being self-centered because that keeps these women distracted and unthreatening to patriarchy. That's why the men don't work menial jobs. They had to construct a lower class to distract most of the nobility so that only the most ambitious would be empowered. The same goes for women. Take away a woman's assets, autonomy, and sexual/reproductive freedom. Take away the world. Then give her a mirror. What will she see when her world is that mirror? Until she decides to look out of a window instead, it will always be some subset of her that she sees. Even Eloise who desperately wants to be bigger than her body and station, less shallow, still only sees life through the lens of an adventure that empowers her. She romanticizes freedom in the way many of the girls romanticize marriage. And as for friendship, part of that is about being honest with yourself and your shortcomings, setting boundaries, and cultivating unapologetic space for yourself so that you have energy to give your friends rather than repressed resentment. Cressida is at least coming to terms with who she is and who she'd like to be, and she doesn't take on blame that isn't hers to bear. A lot of people pretend to be caring or benevolent, and may even think they are... but in the end they make subpar friends too because they use other people as a means of validation that they are good. Eloise had to be told she was a bad friend because it didn't even occur to her that she broke confidence, and ironically did the very thing she condemned Penelope for -- gossiping and ruining someone in the process. I wouldn't want to be friends with Cressida. But I would know where she stands in a way you cannot say for the two life long inseparable friends on this show, both of whom are combating selfishness, but who are framed as more sympathetic and so get away with more selfishness as a result.

Good thoughts, but Lord Debling is going to the North Western passage to die. It was only successfully passed nearly 90 years later. Cressida is not smart enough or a good enough writer to be Lady Whistledown. The fact that her mother's name is Araminta is a huge clue that she will also fulfil a rather nasty book role next season too. She will be even more embittered and cruel after claiming to be LW herself and being caught in the lie this season, I think.
@ChroniclesofNoria
@ChroniclesofNoria Месяц назад
Well, one can hope though. Lol. Cuz I want to have faith that a Bridgerton that wants me to believe that racism doesn't exist anymore, and yet still mentions the slave trade, even though historically Queen Charlotte's son, George IV was pushing for slavery, until it was officially abolished during his reign, but he still benefitted from it, I hope that this Bridgerton that sometimes remembers history and sometimes forgets it, would hopefully forget that his going to the North Western passage wouldn't be successful, and just have him live. Lol. I do think though that you might be judging her a bit harshly. We have no idea of what kind of writer Cressida would be because we've actually never seen her or heard her write. That she isn't a good enough writer is an assumption that isn't really backed by the show. As for her smarts, she only shows up when the show needs her to act antagonistic towards Pen, or have the man she's interested in taken by the female leads of the season, so we don't know what she's capable of planning or scheming either. Although she's always pretty successful in her humiliation tactics. I know. I'm hoping that the story isn't merging Araminta Cowper with the Araminta from the books cuz I don't want Cressida to be such a cookie cutter villain. Urgh. Can you tell that a lot of my responses are built on a heavy dose of wishful thinking? Lol. Thanks for the comment.

Love the actress. She is fantastic. However, as Taylor Swift said, "Casually Cruel in the name of being honest". The "intent" separates being cruel to being honest. Cressida may have been friends with Eloise but she is definitely Cruel to Pen. She has this selective kindness and that will not do for me. "If you want to know what a man's like, take a look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals"
@ChroniclesofNoria

Oh I agree. She is selectively kind. One would say that Pen herself, as Lady Whistledown is selectively kind as well, as that's what made the queen suspicious of Eloise as she was the one person Pen had previously not been able to write anything unkind about. But I do understand why Cressida wouldn't work for you. I don't think I could ever be friends with a Cressida in real life either. Lol. But I can understand where she is coming from however. @ChroniclesofNoria 2 месяца назад
Oh I disagree with that actually. I definitely think that Lady Whistledown were she not Pen would totally have written about Eloise. The material is right there! Outside of her hanging with the radicals. She would have mentioned how she seems uninterested in their society. She totally would have written something about her coming out and compared it to Daphne’s, which was what Eloise was worried that other people had been thinking. She would have commented on the fact that Eloise only seems to have one “friend” and wonder if it’s because she thinks she’s better than anyone because she is a Bridgerton. She would have written about her public spat with a young gentleman at the evening party and how she left with a lot of fanfare. And that’s just off the top of my head too 😂😂

@@ChroniclesofNoria Assuming she noticed all of those things and didn't notice other, more interesting things. I'm not sure a -- I don't want to say a real Lady Whistledown, but a Lady Whistledown not intimately involved with the Bridgertons -- would focus on them so much or be so aware of them right from the start, because he or she would be coming from a different place, possibly have many sources, and not rely so much on eavesdropping and propinquity -- or, if so, be overhearing different things from a different place.
