Why Lord Debling was the PERFECT Penelope Suitor to make Colin Jealous (Bridgerton Season 3 Review)

I also like him as a character. Sam Philips did a really good job with his portrayal. Lord Debling is charming, attractive & nice. He also has more mature, grown man energy than Colin. Unfortunately, leaving her for such long expeditions made him a hard pass for me. A year might have been difficult but tolerable, however THREE YEARS is crazy! He also sounded like he wasn’t really open to trying to grow love in the marriage & that simply wouldn’t have worked for a romantic like Pen. Debling is much better suited to Cressida who doesn’t care about love & wishes to escape her oppressive father.

The best take I saw was the Lord Debling would have been the perfect match for Lady Whistledown, but Collin is the match for Penelope.

I would've loved to see Lord Debling and Benedict interact. They would've vibed. Both super emotionally intelligent and uncomfortable in this high society BS.

Colin WAS jealous of those random guys Pen talked to (as emphasized by the iconic Nick Jonas cover the second she had a halfway decent conversation with another man), but nothing ever came of those interactions so the feeling was never intense enough for him to have to confront or analyze it. Debling offered everything Penelope said she was looking for. He had so many things that Colin didn’t (title, money, purpose, maturity, etc.) which probably made him feel insecure and inferior. AND Debling's interactions with Penelope were actually going somewhere. All of this combined with Pen seemingly being unaffected by their kiss created the perfect storm of Colin Bridgerton being absolutely miserable. It was delicious, and I ate it all up.

Lord Debling had everything - land, money, title, enough respect that people didn't bug him too much on his vegetarian diet and he's going to be gone for three years. For a lot of girls, that was a plus. Unfortunately, Penelope wanted someone to hang out with, read books, gossip and joke with. And that guy is...unhinged Just Do It guy Colin Bridgerton!

I Adored Lord Debling. He is practically the dream of every lady. Kind, rich, avoiding problematic family members, wants ladies to have their own life and interests and best of all... absent. I feel like those three years would have been very lonely for Pen.

I wished they explored their relationship more instead of using Lord Debling as a plot device. I think it would have been sweet if we got scenes of talking more about their interests or more cute dates! High key was waiting for Lord Debling to invite the Featheringtons for an all vegan dinner at his house 😂 idk why they made him so dang cute! I'm hoping pt 2 makes up for his absence ❤️

I was all for Lord Debling! He is honest and the library scene just shows how sweet and interested he is about her passions. He was the perfect slow burn "love can grow" guy for Penelope. So please, drop all fic recommendations cause I need more Debling.

Luke Newton in an interview said how funny it was for Colin trying to convince Pen in the Carriage that Lord Debling was not good for her and coming with "He is too particular" when actually it was a good match (apart from the love part). I wish for Lord Debling to find what he is searching for. P.s. I loved when he says that he can't marry someone that has her heart someone else already (like... i am not going to have a wife that cheats on me 😆)... fair!

I loved Debling. I was terrified that he was going to be a secret jerk, but he was perfect-just not for Pen.I think he'll one day meet a love match, at least a comfort match-and hopefully the North Passage doesn't kill him.

Debling also has his own title and rank. Colin at the end of the day is a third son and younger brother of a viscount. I doubt Daphne and Anthony would let him live in poverty but still.

Wait can we talk about the irony of Lord Debling being a naturalist when Penelope constantly makes plant puns.

I’ve seen no one else talk about this, and I’m not sure if you did yet, but I truly do think they missed the potential of growth for Penelope by not having her reject his proposal. She should’ve been the one to turn him down, not him turn her down. What I mean by that is that Penelope would essentially be waiting for ANOTHER man had she married him. For 3 years at that. And who knows if he would even permanently come back to their home, he might’ve wanted to go on another sea sailing adventure to save some endangered alpaca or something like that and Penelope would’ve been left waiting for him even longer than she did for Colin. Penelope rejecting Lord Debling would’ve been her essentially saying, “no, I don’t want to wait for another man to learn to love me. I already had to wait for one for years, and I don’t want to have to put myself through that again. If you don’t think it’s a possibility, then it’s not worth it. Why should I have to wait 3 years and then some to find out if you could change your mind?” Colin going to confess his love for Penelope would’ve felt more rewarding on Penelope’s end,m had it been that way I feel. But still I am quite happy with the story we got, it seems that is the unpopular opinion here, but I’m still pretty content with what we got. Also, I would not go with Lord Debling, again, he expects me to wait 3 years for him. A big nope for me. At least Colin was going to back off had Penelope said that Lord Debling has proposed, which is far more than I can say of the previous two male leads (can’t have your cake and eat it too, Anthony and Simon).

I don't understand the Pen/Deb shippers BECAUSE a match between them would ultimately be unfair to both of them. Penelope thinks she wants privacy to be LW but honestly, living most of her time alone without her husband wouldn't suit her in the long run. She is an introvert but that still needs her two close besties (Colin and Eloise) that don't burn up her social battery. As a fellow introvert, I know this to my core. Debling deserves to have someone that is not always pining for another and that would truly be content to run his estate in his absence (someone like Cressida tbh). Not to say that they couldn't find some sort of contentment in their arrangement, but Colin is right, they didn't know each other that long, and some of these issues would come up over time. Pen is a romantic, loves her romance books, and deserves that. Debling saw that and basically graciously stepped aside. I liked him a lot, and honestly I wouldn't mind if he got with Cressida. They could make it work (since they are bound and determined to give her a redemption arc anyway).

You do make a good point that Lord Debling’s honesty was refreshing, especially compared to a lot of other people. And by all counts, he absolutely is a better person than the ton is willing to give him credit for. I think what rubbed me the wrong way about his intentions was that he wasn’t looking for a partner so much as he was looking for an unpaid housekeeper, especially. I mean, any woman he married would be in charge of his house and affairs, and that’s not nothing, but it still gives me the vibes of a guy looking for a woman who will do all the hard stuff for him so he can do whatever he wants. Of course, if there’s a fic out there where Lord Debling finds his love match during his travels, I will absolutely read it.

He was honest about being in love with plants, but that's not the same as saying "I want to fall in love with you." Like he was gonna leave her for months at a time so he can play botanist.

I thought Debling was a fantastic foil for Colin. It was nice to see them play it as him be a genuine, kind man who was interested in her for her and happy she had interests different from him. Nice to see a woman not have to put on a front to get a man interested, glad they told that bit of story too, he was ready to propose to her because she admitted she wasn't interested in the same things as him

I’d even say they didn’t go far enough with Lord Debling. But I understand they couldn’t make him too compatible since they wanted to sell Colin as the best match to us. Which let’s admit, was gonna be a tall order. 😅

i’m completely team polin so i’m going to be biased against debling, but i do love that debling was ultimately a good guy. pen deserved to be pursued by a good man and colin needed a kick in the pants. debling definitely served that purpose, as well as served to show her that “good” isn’t enough because at the end of the day she deserves love. that said, dude still had some red flags. i liked that debling noticed her at the first ball and that the other lady was sneering, but thought it was interesting that he didn’t pick up on the fact that cressida ripped her dress on purpose. i saw this is a direct contrast to colin who saw through cressida in season 1 when she spilled her drink on pen and immediately publicly turned cressida down in favor of pen. yes, the drink was a more obvious moment and presumably colin was more familiar with cressida as a mean girl, but it was a bit of a red flag for me that debling didn’t seem to pick up on it and in fact kept falling for cressida’s fake personality, like at the balloon event when she was talking about the endangered bird and then faked an injury. the fact that he was considering cressida at all was 🚩. i also saw the whole rescue moment as colin noticing the balloon headed toward pen and immediately taking action, whereas debling ran away at first without making sure pen was safe. still definitely gets kudos for going back to shield her, but wasn’t super impressed that he ran away without her at first. as for whistledown, i do think it’s great that debling doesn’t care about gossip, realistically a much more mature man. definitely would want a guy like that for me. but in the context of the show, look how happy pen was when talking to remington about how much he loves whistledown. i think that specifically was to show the contrast with debling who doesn’t read it. pen is proud of her work and wants to be part of society, which debling doesn’t. and in defense of colin, it’s clear that first lesson plot was colin projecting - he changed his entire personality to fit in, and was teaching pen that method with the whole “no more talk of books…” but then realized that’s not what either of them should do. in fact he’s clearly happiest when the two of them are being themselves and making dad jokes with each other, and his jealously is the worst when she has moments of genuine connection and laughs with other men, which i think starts with remington, not debling. “jealous” by nick jonas plays when pen is talking to remington, implying colin’s first moment of recognizable jealousy is when she’s being herself and laughing with a man who isn’t him. debling ultimately is the actual threat because i assumed remington didn’t end up calling on pen since the story of her lessons with colin breaks out right after and she’s ostracized and apparently doesn’t leave her house for weeks. i did love the way debling asked how to ask for pen’s hand in marriage, that whole exchange was so cute. would definitely be a highlight in an alternate dimension where they are the main couple. but at the end of the day, it wasn’t romantic. he flat out tells pen later he probably doesn’t have room to love her because of his career, even knowing she loves romance and love stories. he didn’t say no, true, but i’m not sure when they would have time to fall in love with him literally leaving for years at a time. they also make it a point to show that debling doesn’t like his family, as opposed to colin’s loving family dynamic. pen already has a terrible family, to then be stuck with debling and either a) have to deal with horrible in-laws, or b) be completely alone with no support system when debling travels for years at a time, is such a sad future for pen who just wants to be loved. she deserves a giant family of people who will all love and accept her. i will say debling bringing her a plant was very cute. and good for him for bowing out kindly as soon as he realized. also, so wild when debling basically implied pen would end up cheating on him with colin since debling will be away so much lol. and that colin did struggle to come up with reasons she shouldn’t marry debling, basically just “he’s a picky eater 🥺” lol. but all in all, agree that debling is overall a good guy, just not for pen. and i will continue to defend colin, the man who literally chased after pen at every ball (his full spin at the lunar ball cracks me up every time), because we love to see pen walk him like a dog 😅.

i LOVED lord debling until he insinuated that penelope having feelings for someone else would make her more likely to cheat on him. especially after he has been honest to her that he cant promise her romantic love. would he say that makes him more likely to cheat on her during his three year trip?

Lord Debling also conveniently presents as a whole lot of things that Colin can't give her. He is older (mature), titled, has a clear purpose (conservation), has the standing to flout the rules of the ton and still be accepted. All things Colin wants to be able to offer, but can't yet because he's still young for a man of his culture, still figuring out his purpose and building a reputation in the ton. I suspect that part of what makes him unable to make a smooth move or a winning argument against Debling with Penelope is that he feels that Debling outdoes him on every level (except that he doesn't love her like Colin does - desperately). I think even Colin believes absolutely that, if she couldn't have love (read: Colin), Debling would be a great catch for her. As such, he knows that there are a lot of people who might not approve of Colin seeming to ruin that match for her. He doesn't understand yet that she's desperately in love with him too, and a lot of people have likely figured that out by now, so probably there won't be the social backlash he is worried about. But it is proof of what a people pleaser he is that he's worried his love confession might be unwelcome or seen negatively by the ton or her family. He just can't keep it to himself though, once he knows that Debling has bowed out in favour of Colin. That's a stand-up gentleman move, right there. There's hope for him yet. Penelope will help him figure everything out once they're together. But he doesn't stay quiet so long just because he's stupid, it's because he really doesn't feel good enough, suave enough, smart enough, popular enough, etc. He wants to be her everything and tick off every box that society and Penelope may have on their lists. I would rather someone who isn't sure they're good enough but is willing to try like hell than the caricature of a ton rake he has been pretending to be this season. Yep, i would much prefer the real Colin over either the "armour" of the ridiculous persona he donned to protect himself or the "perfect on paper" guy who can't give her the love she needs and may not ever be either able, or possibly willing, to try. Debling would be perfect for someone who doesn't want, need, or expect love from her husband - like maybe Cressida? I think, even if there was no Colin, the lack of love might still be a deal-breaker for Penelope. She's such a romantic. She's tried to convince herself that she could make it work with Debling, but i think she probably would have ultimately turned him down if he had asked. Debling bowing out gracefully and Colin proposing is actually the best option for her, so she doesn't have to risk turning down the most eligible bachelor or look like the pathetic loser who got dumped at prom. No, she's the woman so desirable that she managed to go from courting Debling to marrying a Bridgerton in the same night! Yeah, there's only a few problems with this scenario, and we'll see them play out in part 2, I bet.

Having watched the seasons fairly close together, I could see the Colin and Penelope spark throughout. Speaking as a girl with three older brothers and a dad she dearly loves, I can attest to many men being clueless until the day comes where they're not anymore. It definitely takes some nudging! To me, Colin always seemed sweet, and I'm glad that she had the fortitude to wait for him to get his head out, as you said. Lol. Can't wait to hear your takes going forward! Cheers.

I also felt like he was wishy washy with her and Cressida. But I am not against him either. He and Penelope want different things and that’s fine and no one wants to settle.

it can actually be presumed that the lord that was going to call on Penelope didn’t, as immediately after it’s exposed that she unlisted Colin to help her find a match. I think, given the way the men she approaches after this is exposed speak to her, it’s to be understood that Lord Remington doesn’t keep his plans to call on her. Lord Debling was the only suiter actively pursuing Pen for Colin to get jealous of. I like Lord Debling, but i would love a line in future season’s mentioning him having gone missing or something on his trip. I feel like that’s the most likely realistic conclusion to his expedition.

I'm keeping my opinion of the story mostly to myself but i am definitely starting to see the impact of those with power on our favorite shows. I definitely see thier influence this season in part 1. Artists deserve to be paid and not harassed for things we don't like about their work. Thank you for reminding us about the real world that affects the making of our escapism fiction.

Debling is the exact opposite of Colin in so many ways, he’s so mature, has a clear purpose for himself, a title, and doesn’t really care about making himself attractive to the ton as a whole. He seems to stay away from the drama. To me this basically highlighted every immature detail about Colin, which I thought was so interesting! Yes, I love Debling, and personally, would choose him over Colin in a heartbeat, but obviously it’s not like that in Penelope’s case, who is bound to end up with Colin. But what I would have loved more is if Penelope felt that she could confide in Debling more and appreciated his good qualities, or if they became friends, even if they aren’t compatible for marriage. On Colin’s hand, I wish having Debling as a rival would have made him GROW UP for gods sake. Like if he handled things with Penelope more delicately. For me, barging in on Debling and Penelope while they were dancing in public was not it, once again he places her in a place of scrutiny by the ton, and him doing that made tipped Debling off and made him break things off immediately. Basically, Penelope lost a good option, and her only one, to her knowledge, because of Colin’s impulsive actions, especially after she was humiliated in her association with Collin twice before (Colin saying he wouldn’t court her, the ton knowing about Colin helping her find a man). I would have loved a private intervention much more, i think they could’ve had a better conversation as well. Overall, I just wish Colin did more to win Penelope back.

I absolutely loved Lord Debling and I could totally see a romantic plot line where he marries someone similar to Pen (independent, strong, clever, caring) in a practical marriage that suits both of them equally well, and as time passes they grow to love each other. Another slow burn story like Polin, but with an academic (Debling) who thinks his heart is content with his research who finds that his life companion is strong, admirable, loyal, and gets utterly under his skin ❤

Personally I see Lord Debling better suited with Eloise. Or at least the Eloise we had in previous seasons. Lord Debling is prepared to give a future wife privacy because, as much as he is the greenest of flags for the society in that universe, he doesn’t believe that a woman is capable of sharing his interests and having the sense of adventure so he is willing to settle for less. Enter Eloise: strong, capable of anything she sets her mind to, has a sense of adventure and is incredibly caring. I can see Eloise setting him right and reminding him that women are as capable of adventure as men are. Just like Debling, she doesn’t care for the society and the expectations. Whilst she is now moulding herself to the society, it’s because her spirits are broken by what happened in the last season and that’s her shield. But long term she would be miserable if she continues this path. I can see Debling taking that shield away from her. She needs excitement and adventure. I could honestly see her wanting to join Debling in his adventures and putting her energy into other causes nearby. Debling is looking after the birds and plants whilst she is looking after the people and the community in the region. They would complement each other beautifully.

Lord Debling is a good character, but I don’t think he’s a good match for Penelope. She desires romance and passion. Debling says he has no space for love. And he’s going away for three years, so I don’t buy the idea that they’d fall in love slowly. What he wants is a long distance wife to take care of his house while he goes off on his adventures. Penelope deserves someone who will whisk her off her feet because that’s what she’s always wanted. Debling cannot give that to her

Lord Debbling is in the books. Penelope in the book muses that maybe she could of tried finding a suitor but it would of been unfair as she felt so much for Collin. Ps: Before I go any further let me say I don’t hate Jessica Madsen the actor for Cressida. However I suppose if they’d cut some of Cressida’s screen-time we could have had a Polin flashback! He was so perfect for her, and I loved the way he didn't get pissed when finding out she loves someone else and just politely leaves. I so wish we had more Polin build up instead of focusing on characters who had their season already or a show-only couple that I like but got too much of so far this season.

I absolutely agree. I thought Lord Debling and Penelope were actually a very good match. And if there were no call and she and he had the potential to fall in love. It's clear that he knew her and ways that not even Colin knew her. He was charming and very much about his business. I think if he found out she was lady Whistledown, he may have found it amusing. Lord Debling had no love for the ton and seemed to share the same contempt for them as she did. I am admittedly a Polin shipper, but Lord Debling was needed for Colin to pee or get off the pot. There is one thing I do want to point out. Colin was jealous prior to their kiss. He was there a little bit too long. And then one interaction, she touched a suitor and his face got a little dark. LN was excellent in his micro expressions.

The way Debling was written that way (very absent and leaving her alone too long in the future) just so he could fell off as a strong contender as a love interest just feels like this is rigged. It would be interesting if he plans to bring Penelope along his business trips so they could bond during those times

I love love love that Pen had a choice. It wasn’t “only Colin will ever be interested in me…assuming that ever happens…because he’s the only one who knows me.” It was “okay when I am more confident in my own skin others will also find me physically and mentally attractive.” And like others said he was super great on paper and in practice. She got to choose if she wanted that path or if she wanted to gamble for love with someone else. She could have fought for Debling but she knew she wanted a love match. I have never been this early in my life

Lord Debling seems to see the Lady Whistledown in her and relate to that aspect of Penelope, instead of to her heart. And Colin sees everything but Lady Whistledown. The two men are opposites in that way.

Lord Debling is my ideal man - kind, respectful, intelligent and away from home most of the time so I can do what I want lol in this era for a woman that is pretty amazing - to pretty much be in charge of the estate and how you live your life...most women didn't get that.

I loved him so much, I mean for a second I really wanted them to be together. I like Colin but lord debling would have loved her so much. I thought it would be so cute that they both would be those lovely romantic couples who get to fall in love after they got married, got closer and got to know each other more and more.

Cressida wasn't very developed or given much of a backstory in the books, and didn't have the happiest of endings apparently. Additionally, Lord Debling was made for the show, and wasn't in the books. I have a feeling they are setting it up to where these two marry to give a now humanized and more empathetic Cressida a happier ending.

Although I didn't like the Lord as Penelope's suitor, I appreciate that he made Colin jealous.
