Yep it sure was. Except on Christmas Eve when the Yule Log was on followed by Midnight Mass from St. Patrick's Cathedral. The Honeymooners, for a while, was shown right after Mass and it was always the Christmas episode. The one where Jackie Gleason steps out of character at the end but they would cut that part off.

@tomitstube a lot of times I don't think he was acting. All of his characters. The Poor Soul, Fenwick Babbitt, Joe The Bartender...He knew tons of people like that. He was part of each character and vice versa. He delved deep into his musical knowledge and had his orchestras perform standards, but other little known gems as well. "Romantic Jazz" is a great record, "Lover's Portfolio" which is a box set of albums that are made to dance to, drink, to, and love to. I have that one with the drink recipe he put into it.

I used to see Art Carney in Westbrook, CT all the time. Especially at the Elks Club. He used to love hot dogs and baked beans.
@Tuncle54
@Tuncle54 2 года назад
I built a house on the Westbrook shore in 1988. Art Carney’s house was about 6 houses away, towards the public beach, which was not far from the Elks club. During the construction of that house, Art occasionally came to visit, and we chatted occasionally. I think he liked my sense of humor, coz the first time I met him, he walked up behind me as I was squinting into my transit, checking the plumb lines on the structure; I had no idea who was behind me at first, and assumed it was another “tourist” interfering with my job, asking too many questions, so I decided I’d have a little fun and when he asked what I was building, which was a very contemporary structure, I said, “A bank…” Of course, the implication was that it was costing a fortune, but I was also just being a smart ass. Right then, one of the boys on my crew saw me standing next to “Ed” and shouted down from the top of the house, “Heyyy, Ralphy Boy!” I heard Art chuckle behind me, and turned to see him laughing. I almost stammered like Ralph might have, out of embarrassment for my sarcastic comment. Lol. But when I started to apologize, Art would have none of it. He laughed and told me I had nothing to be sorry about, coz he had no right to bug me whilst I was hard at work, earning a living. I then tried to apologize for my employee’s comment, but he turned that around as well, and told me that he never got tired of people recognizing him for that role. He insisted it’d been groundbreaking for his career and he had no regrets working with Jackie Gleason. He came across as just an average “Joe”, and a nice guy to boot. After that I saw him occasionally as we reached certain stages in the project. I remember wondering often back then if he was watching us build that house, coz he had said he would sit in his bedroom window at times, doing just that; fascinated by the progress. Bottom line, watching the old shows took on a different meaning for me after that. I got to meet the “real” man, and my take was that he was just as sweet as the character he portrayed in that series.

One of my very favorite episodes! It always reminds me what happened to me when I was young. George and I were childhood friends and used to hang out every single day. From playing kid games to chasing women. Always together. But we both joined the army and we lost track of each other. One evening I was walking in the busy street in uniform and there was George walking toward me! I was glad to see him, but he was a lieutenant, and I was a private first class! I said Hey George, long time! He said I'll give you hey George! Why did you not salute? You're going on report! I thought he was just messing with me, but he was not! He was serious as cancer. His rank went to his head, erased his memory and showed his true colors. I felt very sad but after a while I realized that I did not need a friend like him, he was not like Norton, a true-blue buddy, he was more like a selfish arrogant little man. I never saw him again, I never wanted to!

It actually lasted a lot longer than the 39 episodes, before and after those, just not by the same title. You should check out "The Honeymooners: The Lost Episodes" DVD set, tons of episodes that aren't the classic 39. And that just covers the 50s, not many know the Honeymooners were also brought back in the 60s and 70s as well.

Well, there were a couple of publicity stills taken where he was behind the wheel of an actual New York City bus but there was never any footage of him actually driving one or even a scene with the bus standing still and him receiving passengers. Not even on the lost kinescope episodes or when it was a skit on his variety show.

One of the best shows ! Teaches so many Life Lessons of everyday situations in Society. There's pride, jealousy, envy and misunderstandings. But the greatest Lesson is when Norton admits the ideas were his best friend's own words. I don't know how these ideas were put together in less than 20 minutes, but it works, the audience is not superficial like today's shows. This is the real deal and in the pioneer days of television before they got "professional".
