You forgot to mention the most impactful change to missiles. Before 3.2.0, almost every weapon with missiles got their points for special decreased since missiles were really bad. After missiles got buffed, post-version 3.2.0, those decreases stayed. This was one of the main reasons why missiles were so spamable.
i suspect the balence team at least are aware of how much players hate missiles and in 3 at least its very telling that they've been put on weapons that arent shooters, as in theyve realised that having missiles on a base weapon that can already turf/splat well makes the pace of the game slow way down
@@dylantoney6971 at least reef and Flingza have their weaknesses that help balance it out a bit. Reef paints well but needs good aiming to splat well on its own and Flingza’s vertical does paint well but it’s very slow. Flingza not having a bomb projectile also makes it much more vulnerable to snipers.
@Dylan Toney you say that but imagine if the Ttek or .52 Gal or even Custom Junior got them. I'd take a flexible but limited roller and a funni bow with them any day of the week.
@@aegisScale True, but if only they gave it to the worst painting weapons lmao. imagine they just give it to the Explo, the Luna, and the Carbon hahaha.
Very good video! I think that the pain of reef lux and flingza having tenta missiles should have been mentioned, but I understand skipping the trauma and going straight to the chill season nerf.
This video described a simple version of the history & why the special became an utter trash design. Something I like over Prochara's video on the special. I disagree with that it's more balanced but the video is still really good.
One of my issues with it in splatoon 3 is that splatoon 2 had many other global range specials. It just feels like a splatoon 2 special plopped into splatoon 3. Something like inkjet or stamp work well because they fit the general theme of a more individualized, more vulnerable, and less team reliant special.
I hated tenta missles in 2 and despised them in 3. Having to deal with flyfish people in and out of salmon run was killing my enjoyment and made me hard target those players to disrupt them as much as possible. If they were on my team well I inked all of home base like a madman just so they can't special spam and go in at least a little further to engage.
I get it, but as a Flingza main I just wanna let you know that sometimes we just like the weapon that missles happen to be on not cause of missles themselves 😭
@@PeachBlueSkies As a flingza main myself I purposefully try to get involved in the match as much as possible, and not try to sit back and ink my base the whole game. Obviously if its turf war i will ink the base but i still try to get involved as quickly as possible. The highest amount of missiles I've ever seen myself use in a single match is 5 (from what I can remember).
@@ijustwantedtocomment8319 Another Flingza main here. I pretty much have to stay up close to the action because I enjoy getting mileage out of both the verticle flick and trapping choke points with Mines. It's more fun that way.
although missile was definitely more dominant towards the end of 2's lifespan, and aren't great game design in general, stingray was worse. Not only was it absolutely broken for a period of 2's lifespan, but it was so poorly designed nintendo stopped putting it on weapons-the infinite range was one thing, but compared to other specials that have infinite range like wail in 1, it had a very long duration and can stall objective for several seconds, and in modes like rainmaker there is often little to no counterplay if they pop ray.
The biggest issue is just that instead of displacing someone from somewhere, it can displace everyone from anywhere. Instead of moving someone off of a specific location with, say, triple inkstrike, it instead moves everyone from wherever they happen to be standing, and from infinite range and little to no weakness, unlike triple inkstrike. If either shouldn't be able to swim, it should be missiles. And whats worse is that killer wail does the same thing, but its actually balanced! Spamming it from range, while annoying, is much less effective, as well as the fact that its less displacing while still forcing you to be moving. You don't have to clear away from such a large area, just dodge a small beam which can be done in more or less the same place with adequate jumping and swimming. Basically, every other special is able to be fought, but with its infinite range and ability to affect the whole team, which not even killer wail can do, tenta missiles doesn't have a counter. It's instant, unable to be fought when its far back but still has no downside to being that far, and just encourages such an unhealthy play style that no other special in 3 encourages, because no other is so poorly designed that their optimal usage is just to spam them out as much as possible!
One more thing they changed between games: the missiles' homing ability is less accurate, so if you keep moving you'll be even less at risk than splatoon 2, only really impacting you if you don't move much.
@@ijustwantedtocomment8319 yeah bubble blower is my favorite special in splatoon, it's such a versatile special with all the things you can use the bubbles for. I miss it
I think specifically splat 2 it was fine. Things like ink armor, sting rays, and baller were more a dominant pick over tenta missiles. It's when they brought it to splat 3. They're not many dominant picks over tenta missiles since how safe they are.
Kshot was everywhere and was always paired up with an Nzap for the missile + armor retake/push. If it's not Kshot it's the Jet painting zone on a safe part of the map to farm, avoiding engagements as much as possible. It's also one of the reasons Shooters thrived because of their mobility since they don't get as much startup or endlag and is a counter balance to Armor and Ray to mitigate their effectiveness or complement them in a comp.
I never had an issue with tenta missiles and even in it's current state I still do not have in issue with it. Splatoon three missiles are worst now and I do not understand why many still complain about the special.
I remember being in matches when everyone including myself would have tenta missiles and everyone would just spam in the whole match. I had called it the tenta meta
tenta missiles are still the best special in the game, they cannot be fixed fundamentally. nintendo was so stupid to add these in splatoon 3, they are undoubtedly the most hated special in the franchise.
Nice video! Now I understand why this special is so hated! Lol. But, i just suggest you to take off the sounds from the splatoon macthes, because it's too much noise.
Splatoon players are fun....hate missiles but no one complaining about eliter sniping you by 50% of map or more...i prefer much more beign target by missiles than someone destroyng my fun sniping me using a coward weapon on a game that benefit them so much by those terrible map designs...
Oh they complain, you’re complaining right now. And you think being an e-liter main is a walk in the park. As soon as you enter the lobby you got four motherfuckers who are going to, without fail, try to rush you. A cowards doesn’t paint a red target on their back! On the real. Charger is very difficult to play. Which is why I play them. I like the challenge of trying to master the weapon. It takes months of practice to just be mediocre at it. I’ve been playing them close to 1000 hours and I still whiff a lot of my shots. If you think Tenta Missiles are preferable to chargers you’ve never went up against a team with four of them where missiles continuously rain down like hellfire from the sky. You can counter play a charger. I’m always getting surprised, flanked, chased, and bombs thrown at me. You can’t really counterplay the missile
Uhh, do you live under a rock, literally everyone is complaining about the stages. Type in Splatoon 3 stage design into RU-vid, reddit, twitter etc and see what pops up. The whole charger problem is being almost entirely caused by that issue, so it’s not really the weapons fault
Pro splatoon players when I tell them they can just move the L stick to avoid missiles 🤯 Seriously though tenta missiles are hardly OP when you have played against the splatoon Wii U specials which truly were unfair to go against but fun to use.
Whether they are op or not is irrelevant to why this special is annoying. It's the fact it was that it was an easily charged special that forces you to essentially move when you saw the target that is essentially easy to target players with anywhere across the map. The special by it's very nature is made to be annoying. It's good the developers had enough sense to not stick them on painting weapons like in Splatoon 2.
Pro Splatoon players when in moving away from the Tenta missiles they lose a valuable spot to control the choke points on the map meaning the enemies can rush in without them being in a good position to fight back🤯 Although if you think you’ve discovered some kind of amazing meta defeating strategy then feel free to enter tournaments and see how you do. Keep in mind most of these players played Splatoon 1 as well.
