George Plantagenet is remembered in History as a turncoat and a man who defected during the turbulent Wars of the Roses. The Wars of the Roses were a series of Medieval battles and conflicts over who was the rightful King of England, and over the decades these battles shaped England forever.
George Plantagenet, the Duke of Clarence was born into the House of York, and his father had fought for the Yorkist dynasty being the Duke of York. His father was executed, but George had many siblings and two of them would become the King, Edward IV and Richard III. It was against Edward IV that George would rebel joining forces with Warwick Kingmaker, Richard Neville the Earl of Warwick.
George defected against his brother Edward, and fought for the House of Lancaster his once bitter enemy however he then defected back over to the Yorkist side. He caused the King a huge number of problems though, as he spread many rumours against Edward IV when the King refused to support Edward with his quest for a second wife following his first wife's death. These rumours questioned Edward's legitimacy and following these the King had his own brother George imprisoned in the Tower of London.
Edward IV then ordered the execution of his brother, however he would not meet his end in a simple beheading like during the Tudor period. He was allegedly drowned in a barrel of wine inside the Tower of London, which greatly showed how brutal Edward could be.
So join us today as we look at, 'The Horrific Execution of George Plantagenet.'

This is very good, but some issues: George’s marriage to Mary wasn’t suggested by him but his sister Margaret Dowager Duchess of Burgundy, he showed displeasure after the match was already rejected. His further acts were not really linked to the refusal to Mary of Burgundy but more to a belief that Edward had it in for him after the executions of his retainers Burdett and Stacey and further disillusionment with his brother’s reign. The issue of the marriage with Mary was not brought up further as a grievance of George. Also, it is said that the drowning was by George’s own choice which is more believable given that Edward commuted his sentence from hanging, drawing and quartering.

Hi there, I absolutely love your videos and the hard work you put into each one. I read somewhere that George had written to Edward and requested that he be drowned in his preferred wine because after the death of his (George's wife) he had become an alcoholic and George felt that it was a fitting form of execution for himself. Keep up the amazing work that you do and thank you ♥
@rosestewart1606
@rosestewart1606 2 года назад
I've heard that too. And also that their mother requested that form of execution for her son, assuming it was less violent than his head being chopped off. Technically she was right. People are alive and aware for at least a few seconds after their head has been chopped off. And near drowning victims would tell you the worse of it is struggling to stay above water...which George wouldn't have done

Wendy , in those times crime was dealt with swiftly and thoroughly . In Georges case , Edward gave him nearly 20 years to straighten up and George persisted in treason against the Crown and plots to kill Edward , Elizabeth's family members and the princes - Edward imprisoned and pardoned George several times and still that did not deter George from his behavior . Edward finally had no recourse for the last time he had George imprisoned and have him tried on charges of treason against the Crown and himself . With evidence and witnesses George was convicted , Edward signed the Bill of Attainer and Georges death warrant . Edwards mother pleaded for Georges life , and Edward had to deny her the sparing of Georges life due to Georges treasonous acts : 1) against the Crown, 2) Edward himself , 3) Edwards loyal subjects including his father , mother and brother in law 3)his wife , Queen Elizabeth and their children for nealy 20 years could no longer be overlooked ; Edward also could not risk losing those in court loyal to him not continuing to support him if he did not have George executed for his latest acts of treason . Out of consideration for his mother , Edward had George executed in the Tower by being drowned in his bath tub so she would not have to suffer with the knowledge George was executed in public by losing his head on the ' block' .

Cecily Neville " Proud Cis". She was a real piece of work. Edward the Fourth may not have been the "son of York" , but the result of adultery, as she, and later her son Richard would state. If she told George the truth, if truth it was, it would explain a lot about Clarence's bad behavior. He thought he was the true heir, as Gloucester would later. If he could have been patient, Clarence could have outlived Edward, then he could have been Uncle Darkside, instead of Richard.

Drowning is drowning, whether it's water or wine. I wonder how much this method of death was chosen due to the strictures against shedding the blood of a kinsman rather than any attempt at making the death somehow worse or more shocking. A bid to avoid Cain and Abel-type comparisons. Wine rather than water would have been a nod to George's noble birth.

I've read of two cases of workers who fell into a vat and drowned. One was in Ely Ales brewery in Cardiff and the other in Bulmer's cider factory in Hereford. The man went missing for months or years and no one knew what had happened to him, but when they eventually drained one of the vats they found some sludge at the bottom with a few partly dissolved bones, some plastic buttons and some plastic false teeth. What I suspect happened in both cases is that employees tried to get a free drink but were overcome by fumes and fell in. In both cases they were alone, perhaps they were night watchmen, and it took a long time before they were found. The Bulmer's case was abut 40 years ago, the Ely Ales case nearly 60 years ago.

It was supposedly George's favorite wine. I'm not sure why it would be worse to drown in wine than in water. Some have speculated that it was meant to be merciful, though nobody who has ever been in danger of drowning would agree.
