During the Second World War, as the Allies and the Red Army took large amounts of Nazi-occupied territory, the true horrors of the Holocaust were uncovered. Concentration Camps such as Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen were liberated and the liberators came across thousands of poor prisoners who had been left for dead. The concentration camps were where millions were exterminated by the Nazis, but inside Auschwitz the largest there was an incredible story of a priest who sacrificed himself for others.
Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish priest who was rather celebrated within the church. He was well respected, however as the Nazis invaded Poland he decided to hide Jews and other refugees and victims of persecution inside his monastery. Hiding people within Nazi occupied lands was incredibly dangerous and for this the Nazis regarded it as treason. Kolbe was arrested and sent to Auschwitz Concentration Camp because of this, the largest of the camps. However whilst here, he devoted his final days to helping others.
Regularly Kolbe gave his food rations to others, and he was treated brutally by the guards. With every person who escaped the camp, the SS guards executed 10 men. One man did escape, and another was chosen to be executed, however Maximilian Kolbe sacrificed himself and volunteered himself to die rather than the man who had a family. For this Kolbe suffered a horrific ordeal and death, however he is remembered today as the 'Saint of Auschwitz.'
So join us today as we look at, 'The HORRIFIC Execution of Maximilian Kolbe - The Saint Of Auschwitz.'

I remember reading his story in the Reader's Digest when I was around 10. It gave me some hope that I would survive the torture and cruelty of the thing my Mother married. This wonderful saint showed me how to be strong amongst adversity. And that kindness is not a weakness. Not only did I survive, but I am now 60.

@@terrybardy2848 hi Terry. God bless you for all the pain you’ve been through. I’m glad you found inspiration from the story of Saint Maximilian Kolbe. I’ll pray for you but mostly I want you to know that the true definition of forgiveness doesn’t entail that you forget about what happened to you, pretend it never happened, leave aside your hurt and anger, or many of the other nonsense things we have come to believe. True forgiveness can be found when we realize we are all sinners and we wish the salvation of those who have sinned against us. It shows true forgiveness and love when we wish forgiveness and salvation to those who have harmed us those most. Those who don’t deserve it. Because that is what Jesus did for us. And just like Jesus, Saint Kolbe, in his last act before death, raised his hand in the sign of the cross and blessed those who injected him with acid to kill him. He forgave them.

Fuck you for saying that Maximilian Kolbe is a hero, and I am not ashamed to say that I hate Maximilian Kolbe for saying turn the other cheek in the face of the SS Nazis, and I have way more respect for those who are not about to turn the other cheek to say Happy Birthday General Dwight David Eisenhower who was also a great 20th century president! Eisenhower was a far better man than Kolbe, because he condoned violence against the SS Nazis, and those who sympathized with SS Nazis!

Thank you for posting this moving story. I first learnt of Maximilian Kolbe many years ago in a sermon delivered by my parish priest, when I was about 12/13. The priest, Fr. Piotr Niemiera, was also imprisoned as a young man and worked in Auschwitz collecting the bodies for cremation, and was so deeply moved by Kolbe's faith and sacrifice that, on surviving the war, was ordained into the Catholic church. He left Poland after the war and ministered to a small Polish community in Shropshire where I was brought up. He included non-Catholics among his flock. His face bore the scars of the beatings he received from the rifle butt of a Nazi camp guard. He lived with PTSD every day, but always put the needs of his congregation first. Sadly, he was never able to drive the horrors that he witnessed from his mind and despite people's best efforts to help, he took his own life. He always spoke of Fr. Kolbe as an inspiration and a friend.

How cruel the Germans were. You are aware that the winner gets the say in what happened, right? Are you aware how the Germans were treated, soldiers & civilians along with children? Or is that justified because you think they were all so cruel? Why is it all of these stories that inspired movies & books are proven to be false yet every time another one pops up it's never questioned, in fact some countries will throw you in jail for it. The truth doesn't need laws to protect it. Anybody with common sense can see there's obviously more we're not being told.

The Second World War saw thousands of individual acts of self sacrifice that we will probably never hear of. I think the point here, is that Kolber stood and looked evil square in the face and shocked even those perpetrating it. The purpose of his sacrifice would’ve been not only to save the life of the man whose place he took , but to try to save the souls of those prison guards too. Kolber probably believed in a Hell and knew that his short suffering would be nothing compared to the eternal agony of the Nazi guards unless they came to repent. Did they I wonder ?

Amazing story. Along those same lines, if I remember correctly there was a woman - possibly a nun - who volunteered to go die in the gas chamber along with a group of children because she wanted to comfort the children and keep them calm during this ordeal.

Can you go threw all the West Minster Abby saints?? I have no clue who they all are. That would be awesome!! St. Maximilians story absolutely broke my heart. The good die young and fast. I heard in order to become a saint, you have to preform a miracle. I'm sure the man who's place he took felt like he gotten that miracle. To offer up your life for another prisoner even though chances were his family was dead, is the bravest thing I've ever heard a person do. What a good man he was.

If one can EVER doubt the fact of man's inhumanity to man, say Auschwitz. Think Fr. Kolbe, a man of deep enduring faith willing to face death and God through the sacrifice of his own life in-service to and with others and, in this last time, for others. RIP St. Maximilian. The events leading to Kolbe’s death are not told faithfully. The selection of 10 condemned men took place during prisoners call, a large gathering on inmates largely meant to torment them as they were forced to stand for hours no matter what the weather. Kolbe actually approached the SS Captain and explained in fluent German that he wished to die to save the man who cried out. The Captain was so surprised that after few moments he addressed Kolbe as Sie (Sir, form of respect) instead of normal derogatory you. Once Ssman understood the wish he simply said Gut. My uncle was a prisoner of Auschwitz and witnessed the entire event.
