Join us as we look into the arrest and then lack of a trail that Catherine Howard endured. We look at the interrogations she faced and the confessions that followed.
Catherine knew all too well what fate awaited her for Anne Boleyn had left behind a legacy that was feared. Henry initially felt the accusations were nothing but rumours but ordered an investigation telling Thomas Crammer, “ you are not to desist until you have got to the bottom of the pot”.
So join us as we discuss the events that followed Catherines arrest and delve into the past, following the footsteps of Catherine Howard when she is accused of adultery and charged with leading an 'abominable, base, carnal, voluptuous, and vicious life, like a common harlot, with diverse persons'.

Knowing the temperament of Henry, his volatile moods, and violence; it is unfathomable that Culpeper would risk this liaison with Katherine. Torture, imprisonment, and beheading had to be known to the entire royal court as a normal consequence for crossing Henry's constantly moving red line. There must be more to this story than meets the eye. Living dangerously barely covers as an explanation for the deeds of the actors in this tragedy.
@tokkia1384

I agree! I can see how Catherine may have gotten into it because she was young and didn’t quite realize the gravity of the situation - the king was giving her gifts and spoiling her, she must have been complacent and thought he would surely forgive her anything. Culpepper may have also thought he’d get away with it because the king liked him. In fact, he did get a more merciful death than Dearham. But at the same time I think that Catherine would have been aware of Henry’s previous wives and Culpepper would, too, have been aware that those close to the king fell, too. I do think it’s much more likely that it wasn’t a case of simple frivolousness. Culpepper possibly blackmailed her. Perhaps someone was behind him too. We may never know. But I agree this whole situation is very fishy.
@Justificus
@Justificus 3 года назад
@@tokkia1384 You make very good points as to Katherine's naive mindset concerning Henry's spoiling her. He probably sheltered her from seeing his true nature and vindictive paranoia. Which begs the question, how could this affair have been kept a secret from him? He was grossly obese and his health had been failing, his leg wounds and putrid smell are a matter of historical record. Queen Anne had previously stated aloud that he was impotent. Katherine seemingly had alleviated this to some effect, but was it enough for him to father another child? Did Henry enlist Culpepper (a personal body servant) in a bedroom threesome for his own voyeurism pleasure, and to ensure that a new heir to the throne is born? Thereby, keeping his dignity and virile reputation intact? Once it became known, was Culpepper and Katherine then sacrificed to protect Henry's reputation? The head of the Church of England had to be a paragon of virtue. Why else the more merciful death for Culpepper? Henry was once again the cuckold husband and cuckold King. A thing not easily forgiven a second time. The million dollar question is why did Henry allow any of his two queens infidelity to become public in the first place? Surely, his pragmatic counselors would have advised just doing away with them by poison or an unexpected fatal accident. No fuss or messy public disclosure. Deed done. Move on. Who pushed the idea of going public and subjecting Henry to public ridicule? What was their agenda? No lady in waiting, knowing the story of Anne's downfall, would have kept completely silent and risked the wrath of the King. Not only for themselves, but their families could also face ruin. We both agree, too much of this story makes no sense whatsoever.
@tokkia1384
@tokkia1384 3 года назад
@@Justificus that is a spicy theory! I personally don’t think this would be the case. Henry was extremely obsessed with his own personal power, dominance and appearance. Nothing at court stays secret for very long and such a venture would certainly be a blow to the kings reputation. The child would also not be his and the whole reason for his obsession was to continue the Tudor line. It didn’t necessarily matter as much to him if the mother of the child was a mistress (though it was still a problem) but the whole point was for the child to be a Tudor. Even if he could hide it, he would never consider such an option because of his ego and because of the issue of the succession. Also he was (hypocritically, but still) religious and considered himself to be of sacred flesh. Sure he could justify adultery but the kind of arrangement you propose would have been beyond him I feel. As for Culpepper I’m sure his mercy was simply out of the fact that he had liked him. Also politically, he would have been likely encouraged to show clemency occasionally. It is not politically advantageous to be Vlad the Impaler.
@Justificus
@Justificus 3 года назад
@@tokkia1384 Admittedly, mine is an "over the top" theory and very speculative. Yet, Henry was very concerned that his line go forward. A second son (his or not) would be an insurance policy against his first born being harmed or assassinated. There would be another male Tudor in the wings (legitimate or not) as a backup. His reputation as having been already a cuckold King across Europe, subjecting him to laughter and ridicule, would have been unbearable. He had to prove his virility at all costs. Katherine would have been watched with close scrutiny for any deviation or inclination of infidelity. Her ladies in waiting would have been Henry's spies. At this point in his reign, Henry had dispatched more than a hundred individuals, all sacrificed to his raging paranoia of treason lurking everywhere. Henry was not a merciful or forgivng person. A close loving friend, advisor, and lifelong companion (Thomas More) he executed as traitor and heretic. He was dispatched with three blows of an axe. No French swordsman there. No mercy. An obstacle removed. Immediately after Anne's execution, he married Jane. No sense wasting time and no need to hold a respectable mourning period before making a royal son. Where he deviated from drawing and quartering his enemies, was when he had been emotionally close to that person. Culpepper had to have been someone close to Henry. The second cuckold affair would have made Henry seem a weak ruler almost beyond belief. Culpepper had no noble claims for mercy. On the contrary, the maximum example of severe punishment was very much in order. The reputation of Crown and Country was on trial. During the Pilgrimage of Faith, Henry was ruthless in the killings of thousands of "traitors." So... spicy indeed is my theory, but Henry was beyond conventionalism at this stage, and his marriage to a teenager was barely accepted or respectable even in that era. Something made Culpepper a special case to Henry and his Privy Council. My theory might properly belong in the National Enquirer, but Henry was one sick and twisted soul, and capable of almost any mental gymnastics and self-aggrandizing behavior. This may need a screenplay!

Katherine Howard seems to have been a very kind and compassionate person: “She brought Princess Elizabeth back to Hampton Court, befriending her. She pointedly called her “my kinswoman” though there was danger in angering the King by reminding him that Anne Boleyn was her first cousin . When she learned that Margaret Pole, Lady Salisbury, had been suffering needlessly in the Tower for years, she risked Henry’s anger once again by employing a tailor to make blankets, warm clothing and bonnets to send to the old woman, though she did not even know her. She later begged Henry to spare this woman's life, to no avail, earning herself nothing but a vicious reprimand. Katherine was still courageous enough to convince Henry to release Thomas Wyatt - and some other prisoners - from the Tower. She and Anne of Cleves got along extremely well too. One night Henry went to bed but Katherine chose to stay up instead with Anne of Cleves. Okay, okay, so who wouldn't, given the choice? The two women even danced together. This is more than Jane Seymour ever did. Yet almost all I hear is that yes, we should pity Katherine Howard but not too much because she was "foolish" and "promiscuous". It pisses me off.

Sadly, this Child had no parents to speak of or anyone to guide her, she was left to the mercy of those around her. She was "groomed" for men's enjoyment and other men's benefit. You are very mistaken. A girl's hymen can be broken many ways not of a sexual nature. It is common among serious athletes. Also, there is not necessarily bleeding during the first intercourse, it is dependent on the woman's hymen (especially the thickness) and the nature of the penetration (and caring of her partner). The bleedings is so unreliable that in some cultures, a chicken is killed and nearby for other women friends/relatives of the new wife to put blood on the sheets because it is so commonly believed.

Certainly back in those days they believe that all virgins bled and many woman ‘cut’ themselves knowing they weren’t virgins. Seen as we weren’t there at the time of consummation, we don’t know if Catherine did bleed or if she harmed herself to make out she was a virgin. In this day and age we now know that not all woman bleed the first time for many different reasons. It’s not about ‘doing it right’ as you have said 🤣

As Henry stated his belief that Anne of Cleves was not a virgin when it is pretty certain that she was, he appears to have not been much of an expert in this area.

@@neilbuckley1613 Many men cannot tell the difference. It's not like they give classes in it. As for him, he was so fat and not likely very spry so would be more impeded than most men. I suspect he was barely able to even do the deed.

Catherine Howard was never "groomed". That's presentism. Also, the portrait shown at 1:16 is not Catherine Howard. It's Jane Seymour's sister, Elizabeth Seymour, Lady Cromwell. Why do you simultaneously say it's unknown whether or not Catherine's relationship with Culpepper went beyond friendship and call her letter to him a love letter? No contemporary evidence supports the story that Catherine broke free from her jailers and ran screaming to Henry for mercy. That was concocted to be part of a ghost story. No chance at all Dereham "raped" her, as their intercourse always took place in a large dormitory populated by others, and no screams or protests were ever heard from Catherine. What was "horrific" about the interrogation? Catherine Howard was an airhead, that's for certain.

Catherine was a CHILD groomed by people around her are you suggesting that a 15 year old child who had a relation with a 30+ year old man is at fault. She said she was raped , her saying that was a reason she died , not all rape victims react the same , some go into shock and don't scream which may very well have been the case, she was just a girl who was abused by everyone around her , even culpepper is believed to have been blackmailing her , just shut up omg

@@Jvdyyy Hmmm, I've posted a lengthy, very informative reply to you twice and twice it's disappeared. There were no personal insults, not even after you rudely said, "just shut up omg". The first time I thought it was a glitch, but twice? I'm beginning to suspect Her Remarkable History is engaging in some censorship here. Let's see what happens to this.
