Twitching Doll creates a spider for EACH counter. It doesn't specify just nest counters. So as a manadork in a deck filled with +1/+1 counters or ability counters, it has a leg up over llanowar elves as it is an army in a can. Bloomburrow's art looks amazing, it's making me look for an option to just buy 1 card each in the entire set to use for D&D purposes.

21:59 the first part Screaming Nemesis is worded like Boros Reckoner; it has to be dealt damage to deal damage to your opponent and stop them from gaining life, it’s not linked to dealing combat damage. So if it’s blocked, or it gets dealt damage by say Lightning Bolt or Blasphemous Act, then you can redirect the damage to your opponent and then they can’t gain life.

Correct. The only worry is how many creatures will they make in this set to fill these "Tribal Guilds" that generally lack bodies. Otters throughout history only have 6 cards prior, only 5 actually physical. Raccoons and Mice being in the same boat.
I guess orzhov bats makes sense, they did that in the Ixalan set, and it definitely fits better than any other color pair. Kind of disappointed we didn't get swamp frogs though...
Foundations smells an awful lot like Hearthstone’s own core set system. For paper it should be a handy way to get people with older collections to have a way to get into standard more easily but for arena it could be incredible if they also do the hearthstone thing of just giving you the entire list of core set cards for free. No packs, no slot machine or having to waste wildcards. Just free.
I don't lay Hearthstone, but I really wish Wizards would adopt their own dusting mechanic and give us wildcards in packs instead of gems when rares and mythics are capped out. In the long run, they'd see much better turnaround in profit.

It flies when you're stuck in the same habits day after day and fail to take personal time to journal about your days, week's, month's, year accomplishments and to-do list. Have to expand your conscious awareness to return time to a more stable pace perceptually. Our experience of time is regulated by dopamine. The more you exhaust it the more it seems to fly but it restores itself daily.
@@Freddisred Getting off the Matrix and into nature tends to help immensely. So does journaling and picking up a new skill to work on incrementally. When we do the same things habitually the brain fires more efficiently in relation to those behaviors and activities to the point where the perception of engaging in them becomes streamlined. To slow things down the bit it needs to be challenged daily so it takes the time to be more present in processing new experiences. Being present is the key and through the struggle of growth or in the experience of pain or discomfort (like weightlifting) does the brain tend to be more attuned to the present moment I've found.
Doomsday Excruciator looks like a really good Reanimate target. 2 mana 6/6 flying that draws you an extra card each turn, without the bad side effect. Seems VERY good.

Big difference, too. Stigma lasher has to land a hit. You can just shock your own Nemesis to get the effect and shut down any lifegain deck. Angels, Soul Sisters, New Sorin, Amalia Combo.

22:40 I think you really misread Screaming Nemesis. If it connects, it does NOT shut off life gain and, you don't get extra damage when you hit with it. Both of these happen when it gets hit, when it takes damage. This is a Boros Reckoner or Spitemare type effect.
Honestly it might be fine. So long as they're not really printing any format warping cards in them, nothing with too crazy an effect that is feasibly playable, then having a proper foundation to work out multiple formats should mean they get to properly tinker with standard sets in interesting ways. Especially if it's just a reprint set, it should be fine and they shouldn't need to take it back.
@@Crawverwell, staple cards that see play in older formats like Llanowar Elves or an almost functional reprint of Wrath of God is not exactly a good place to start IMO It means you are pretty much power creeping 2-mana dorks or 4 mana wraths with downside which were usually printed for standard out of the format Hopefully I'm wrong but not very excited for this foundations thing
So being stuck with llanorwar elves for 5 years straight puts huge pressure on removal and 3 drops. Basically every 3 drop is now "is this broken if played on turn 2"
Alchemy has had "llanowar elves but better" for years now. Nobody cares. All you see is Sheoldred the Apocalypse and Slickshot Showoff. Once in a while you see some poor soul trying to play 5 color legends with the 1 mana dork but thats it, and 5 color legends isn't even tier 2. Standard/alchemy is too fast and too powerful to play mana dorks that just get Cut Down and delay you a whole turn.

@@kevinhulvey7018 it doesn't matter. Any creature nowdays is "kill it or it wins the game by itself". You play a mana dork and a 3 drop, they play tinybones and some other stupidly overpowered 2 drop, you're dead.
Notably, Twitching Doll doesn’t care what type of counters it has on it, you get a spider for each counter it had on it. Almost seems like a typo, but if it isn’t it means the card plays well with +1/+1 counters.
Doomsday Excruciator make Umbris, Fear Manifest incredibly massive. Id provably run it in Phenax, God of Deception. After dropping this, Phenax can one shot someone, possibly the table, depending on the board state.
It's because llanowar elves is plane-dependent, as Llanowar is a place on Dominaria. Elvish Mystic can be printed in a Ravnica set or a Kaldheim set, for example. Meanwhile Llanowar Elves is stuck in Dominaria sets and Core Sets.

Gold, the 5 Bloomburrow Lands show that the creatures animals are like the Guilds of Ravnica. Meaning all the listed creature types are getting support. Orzhov Bats, Rakdos LIzards, Dimir Rats, Golgari Squirrels, Boros Mice, Izzet Otters, Gruul Raccoons, Simic Frogs, Azorius Birds and Selesnya Rabbits~
It's gotten to the point where it's not even a matter if whether or not you can afford to keep up with new cards. It's a matter of the time commitment you would have to put in to put new cards into decks and play more than a few games before the next set is out.

So far this year I’ve skipped RVR, MKM, OTJ, MH3 and ACR. But I did get Fallout and preordered Bloomburrow a few months ago and will definitely be getting Duskmourn and Foundations. Magic really is a game where you need to pick and choose what sets you want to invest your time and money in. There are just so many sets being released.
Doomsday Excruciator feels like the card that people of Wizards of the Coast made when they were on a losing streak in magic and after a long night of drinking binge wanted people to suffer... I approve
Worth noting for Twitching Doll, it can tap for Blue and builds up a counter each time, so if you enchant it with Freed From the Real you can sack it and make infinite tokens.

This is just ridiculous. It's one thing if the products target a different demographic / type of player but since every set now tries to target modern and edh players it's just overwhelming in a very negative way.
Fear of missing out is not good. You need to read the WHOLE CARD. its says untap 1 SINGLE CREATURE. not your board so not its not that good. Pretty bad honsestly
Nowhere to Run just feels like WotC taking Bogles out of the hospital ward where they've been on life support for the past few/several years, and tossing their broken body in the street to be run over by a steamroller. Like damn, a Last Gasp that can not only target hexproof/ward creatures with impunity, but also sticks around as an enchantment to permanently remove those effects is a very large middle finger to various hexproof/ward strategies that could crop up. Like, the fact that you can use this to murder basically any 1 or 2 drop (sometimes even 3, at least in standard) and then it sticks around on the battlefield to hate on future ward/hexproof creatures and/or be blinked or sacrificed for value (since it is a piece of material that actually stays on the battlefield) is pretty wild.
Instead of MTG Foundations, why not just do CORE SETS??? Wotc is really up their own butt. They need to slow down, keep the format but the two, three blocks per set that took a year to come out was a better time for Magic. Sadly, people are too picky and impatient for that to happen.

A thought I just had about the Foundations set for standard, is that it really frees up set design a lot when you're designing the set for standard, because a lot of the nuts and bolts sort of cards that make a format run are just, sort of, already there, so, in theory, they can use that space in the sets for more cool thematic designs instead of having to shovel in Disenchant, let's say, into a set that didn't need it for limited, just so it would be standard legal.

I already have an otter deck on arena with all like 5 Otters that exists right now. I'm so ready for real otter tribal. And they're Izzet colors which makes me love them even more
As an old school Magic player, I remember when white bordered sets (Core sets), were basically the same reprints over and over again so that the same staples were always in Standard. Foundations just really seem like a return to that, which, if you think a "return" to old Standard is good, then this may also be good---or at least part of what made Standard good in the past.
Screaming Nemesis doesn't do what you say it does. It has to *take* damage then send it to a player to prevent life game, not just hitting them in general.
...what the hell?? Isn't the point if standard to have rotation?? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have a general Core Set back. But I WANT them to rotate. I'm personally in the camp of enjoying three year standard, but there are definitely some cards that have started to overstay their welcome with the three year rotation like the Kamigawa Channel Lands, Cappenna Triomes and Fetches, Graveyard Trespasser, and Raffine. Having a set of cards that are staying around for even longer just kinda sucks.
From a design perspective, Omniscience is a very good educational card for someone just learning Magic. As a new player, you see this very heavy and restrictive cost and then look down at its effect and it makes you think "this is powerful!". But established players know that the cost is a bit of a hoop and you still need the correct resources (cards in hand), to make full use of its effect, which is why it isn't always format dominating. But when you learn about more advanced concepts like "cheating things into play", "cost reduction", and basic level ramping or combos, you can broaden a new player's perspective by showing the less obvious things the card is capable of.
I think the chainsaw is quite weak. 2 mana removal that leaves behind a permanent should be strong, but having it only hit creatures (not even PW), making it sorcery speed AND giving the equipment such a high equipcost basically makes it unplayable in constructed imo. Lightning strike is in standard right now. It's a common that hits any target at instant speed. Torch the tower is common, can hit PW as well as creatures, exiles, costs only 1 mana, is instant speed and can easily deal 3 damage in addition to letting you scry 1 when bargained. The chainsaw starts as a +1/+0 equipment with an equipcost of 3. How many creatures do you have to kill until it's worth it to spend that much mana? In what kind of deck are you supposed to play this? A red based aggro deck? Wouldn't you rather play more creatures or burn spells or collect evidence for your detective's phoenix?
4 mana wrath without potential downside in standard as a baseline is really strong. Like you said over the past couple of years we got a lot of good wraths at 5-7 cmc like Farewell, Sunfall, Blood on the snow, Burn down the house and Final Showdown. While these have very huge potential upsides and/or modalities, for a control deck it's very important to clear the board early on to swing the tempo and not take too much damage. Of course 3 mana wraths like temporal lockdown and brotherhood's end can also (and sometimes even better) clear early boards and bridge the gap towards the more powerful 5-7 mana wrath options. But still, I think making this the baseline promises some strong wraths in the future
While the unveiling of three new sets sounds very taxing, especially on our collective wallets, I'm really excited for future standard, especially that MTGF won't rotate for a long time. Also, Llanowar Elves coming back is big. Day of Judgment, too. Foundations I believe is giving us a cycle of Planeswalkers, too. Considering they're limiting them in expansions, having a cycle that lasts until 2029 makes sense. Hoping for an Ob Nixilis reprint! Bloomburrow reminds me of the early days of Lorwyn and Eldraine blended together. Each color combination getting a typal is going to brew some fresh ideas. Hoping we get Pathways reprinted or an awesome new cycle of lands. As a die-hard fan of horror movies, Duskmourn is MY type of set. From what we've seen so far, I love the references to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead, Ringu (The Ring), and so on.
Why is the Wanderer outside of Kamigawa? If she has no spark dragging her around anymore, she should be Empressing. If she still is being dragged around, then why did we bother removing her spark? I've never liked the desparking of all these planeswalkers just so we can further suck up to commander players, but this seems like one of the more egregious character entries. EVEN with the ability of legendary creatures to use the omen paths, the Empress has LITERALLY NO REASON to be off of Kamigawa any longer unless she's still being dragged around... because she's now leaving her plane vulnerable without their empress... I hope she IS still being dragged around because being 'the wanderer' was the coolest thing about her... but ffs if we still want to have her randomly showing up places, then she should really just still be a Planeswalker, and all the Commander players can just be fine with the thousands of legendary creatures they already have access to. What's ONE more mono white legendary creature they won't be using when weighed against the narrative BS of stripping the Wanderer of everything cool about her? COMMANDER!!!! ***Shakes fist vengefully at sky!***
I'm curious about Salvation Swan in a new iteration of a defender deck with Wingmantle Chaplain. Bounce your defenders and spit out more birds... Might be crap, might work. Have the cards already, so why not try? Also Mudflat Village... You can keep recurring the damn Deep-Cavern Bat or Bloodletter. The frustration to ensue
Let's be honest here, llanowar elves isn't going to make GREEN better.. it's going to make G + decks better.. like Golgari, Temur, Simic, Jund, Sultai... mono green I have a hard time believing will ever be a viable deck in standard as long as Black is so overly powered. The removal suite compliments the insane power of the creatures that are kill on sight but I can't get behind llanowar elves specifically helping green cards.. all this reads to me is Sheoldred turn 3 .. llanowar waste, llanowar elves, turn 2 underground mortuary surveil dump forest to bin play Bloomburrow overpowered 2 drop.. turn 3 Shelly. That's all my brain sees right now.......
So here's the plan: First, we pllay a millennium calendar, let it start picking up counters as we untap stuff. Next, we want to get a Twitching Doll into the graveyard. Then we want to get an Agatha's Soul Cauldron into play, and turn our Millennium Calendar into a creature with something like Zoetic Glyph or better yet, Case of the Filched Falcon. Finally, we exile Twitching Toy with Soul Cauldron, giving its ability to our Millennium Calendar. Then we sac it using Toy's ability, making about a million spiders and winning the game on the spot....
Day of Judgement reprint is kinda nice since they tried to print board clears in every other set. Now they don't have to reinvent the wheel over and over. I can already see a Donate like card beeing printed together with Cursed Recording, since it would fit the theme too! Or just a straight up Harmless Offering reprint. Doomsday Excruciator can work well with reanimate decks or something like Dredge, I'd say? You suddenly just got the whole deck in your graveyard and can abuse all your cards! Impending is really good thanks to the card already beeing on the board and not suffering from summoning sickness, so you can attack the turn the last counter is gone! ;) Oh, and the counter get taken off during the END STEP which makes it a lot stronger than during your upkeep! Collected Company as special guest spoils us the main characters of the set btw.
God dammit; I hate how much they're pushing lifegain cards ATM (Guide of Souls is the recent big one). Not because I don't want the strat to be good/viable, but because so many arena players choose cards for their deck simply by searching for "life", so instead of making those players actually put some thought into their building to arrive at a good deck, WorC is just giving them stronger cards that compensate.

I don't understand why they tacked green onto the Anthem. It honestly seems like Wizards just wanted to punish white-weenie players. The only green anthems are 1 from Modern Horizons, 1 from Planar Chaos and Mirari's Wake which is also G/W but doubles your mana. I doubt Honor of the Pure (Yikes) is going to be in Foundations so lots of decks are going to be forced to run green if they want the best Anthem in standard.
This turn: Doomsday Excruiator Next turn: Outrageous Robbery for at least 4 Going to be tough to beat that. But this isn't the first janky 2-card mono-black win the game combo printed recently.
I don't think you're supposed to cast Doomsday Excruciator - between the 6 pips and the *if you cast it* clause on the mill-all-but-six-to-exile thing, it kinda screams "don't hardcast me you monster" and I mean looks like a nice chill reanimation target - 6/6 flier that draws you a card every turn with no drawback in monoblack. It's not even legendary so you could run a few copies or make some tokens of it.
3 simultaneous set spoilers? THREE??? And Assassin's Creed was yesterday and MH3 earlier this month. What the hell is happening with Magic? It's too much stuff, too fast.
I actually liked how ward has been used in recent sets. Yes it makes removal more difficult to use, but no one wants to play big creatures if they're just going to get killed by a 2-mana removal spell and ward makes them line up better without full-on giving them hexproof. My only problem was in Murders at Karlov Manor where the overabundance of "cannot be countered" cards kind of made it kind of not mean anything and negated all the other design decisions around ward. If most of the removal cards ignore ward anyway, then what's the point? The one place I really like "cannot be countered" is on expensive removal spells to make them less terrible and ensure that you can cast them once you have enough mana. So anyway, I have mixed feelings about Nowhere to Run being such a good ward hate card that's also just a decent removal spell. It's probably a good thing, especially to give decks a way to deal with some of the stranger ward costs, like "collect evidence".
I think Fear of Missing Out is going to do well in like, Izzet Murktide, or whatever's left of Rakdos. It goes well in any deck that plays DRC, since those decks are going for delirium anyway. It's also kind of on-the-nose?
@Seth, Doomsday Excruciator might be making an appearance in my Rakdos, the Muscle deck. If you successfully resolve it and it's trigger, it's 6 mana cost means you can instantly exile the rest of someone's library. And depending on your board you may have the ability to do it to everyone else as well.
So this is super niche, but looking at swan my mind goes (other than that I think it's jut a perfectly fine card to play fairly) is to murmuring mystic. Notably, swan does not say 'nontoken'. This lets you do some rather fun things. So the first time you cast a spell with both on the battlefield, you can exile mystic and give it flying. Every time after you can flicker any other creature you have, potentially gaining value or stifling removal. This is especially stupid when you combine it with things like ephemerate which can reset flying counters, or snapcaster that lets you chain extra spells. So you are then having snapcaster enter, give you a spell, mystic trigger into swan trigger, exile snapcaster, EOT snapcaster re-enters with flying and lets you flashback a second time. That second flashback gives you another swan trigger, so if you have a random (say) thraben inspector you also just got another clue, and your snapcaster has evasion, and you have a bunch of bird tokens. If you want to go full combo, things like gravity well can lead to creatures with flying counters losing flying, and so being able to be re-flickered. I don't know if this is good enough to make it playable, but I think if you want to break this card you have to treat it like winota- in that deck, you want human creatures that make nonhuman tokens. In this, you gain value by having creatures without flying that make bird tokens. Now, it's nowhere near the power level of that card (if for no other reason than not many cards fit this bill), but I would be interested to see what Seth can come up with using this interaction.
Fear of Missing Out is going to be cracked in Mono Red, that card is absurd. I'm sad that Doomsday Excruciator has 7 lines of text :( Should have gone for 6. Seems like a fun reanimator card.
Heavily disagree on Foundations assessment Standard is better off with less cards not more. They have already did the 3-years rotation change which made cards like Wandering Emperor or Raffine feel like they have been around for a lifetime, now imagine that with the Foundations cards I just don't see why we need a bunch of staples being legal in std forever when they're already older format staples
If the idea of the set is to always have utility staples available so they don't have to remake them each release, I don't agree with the decision to put breakable cards like omniscience or power level pushing cards like Day of Judgement in the set. I think having combo enablers should be fine, but combo pieces means the foundation set limits what creative things they can print, since they always have to be weary of creating an unintended broken combo. What happens then, do they ban cards from their foundational set?! Printing power level pushing cards is like declaring the $1 is now the smallest unit of currency, it's immediate, forced inflation. They not only can't deescalate the format, but since all the cards for years of development will be developed with those cards as a back drop, even if they eventually decide to remove the pushed cards, by then the power creep damage will already be done.
Come Back Wrong seems like it might work well with Prototype stuff? I mean Ephemerate is the better option for sure, but as a second way to "bounce" a creature and also the upside of being able to kill an opponent's creature, seems good.
I hope that they print some good evergreen emergency pressure relief cards in this Foundations thing. What I mean is cards that can hate on particular strategies if they become over popular in the meta. I mean a hate card that's not good enough to be in your main deck unless something like 33+% of the meta is playing that strategy. Just so as a given strategy gets too over popular the hate cards start showing up in the main deck and not just the sideboard. (Meaning that is has to be a hate card that not just stone unplayable if you don't end up in the 33% of matches that are the targeted strategy. Maybe it's a very over-costed red creature that destroys all artifacts when it ETBs, for example.)

I think you may be sleeping on the cat. It goes incredibly hard with Rakdos the Muscle. It's effectively 3 mana to draw three cards for the rest of the game.
Foundations seems good on paper, but feels too much like they had an empty spot on the calendar for my taste. And, if they don't have it in continuous print how do new players (edit: new like three years from now) get the product at a reasonable price?
For the past few years I've been disappointed with the art direction in Magic and Duskmorne is what I've been waiting for in terms of horror and dark content ever since return to Inistrad didn't live up to my expectations.
In 2 years there will be foundation masters where everything is power crept. Then in 4 years there will be foindation horizins masters 4 collector play boosters and all the other foundation cards will be rotated out.
