A male version of this trope exists as well. I think a Take on that is warranted. There are differences in how the Hot Girl is treated versus the Hot Guy.
"Let us introduce you to 4 characters that look way better than 98% of people you'll ever meet in real life. Now, please believe that just one of them has the pretty privilege and the other three are kind of mid."
Yall white people really see a bunch of white girls and say they are better looking than 98 person on the whole world ? Yall know how many popele ar in the world ? Average woman of color in asia looks better than a lot of them
Monica is not mid she’s pretty too, I like her better, she’s more relatable and has dark hair, phoebe is not bad looking she’s just made out to be the weird one and she’s not the best looking but she’s alright
@sammyvictors2603 they describe it early on in the video - but basically "female friendships aren't that deep and secretly everyone is competing, usually for a man." XD; I was listening to a researched video essay yesterday on the difference between male and female friendships (this is all largely due to socialization than anything inherent to our biology btw) and it seems male friendships tend to be more "surface-level" with an emphasis on shared experience (in the physical, active sense), rather than developed through conversation and deep connection, which is encouraged in girls from a young age.
Totally. what you said comes through a lot in HIMYM with Robin and Lily's relationship. Lily is either making jokes about wanting to make out with Robin or being jealous of Robin because Robin can eat whatever she wants and only gains weight in her boobs. The most of the writers on that show were men and it shows.
As far as Friends is concerned, one of the main creative forces in the show was a woman. Marta Kaufman was a (co-)creator, showrunner, writer, executive producer and casting director of the show.
"Hot" is not about looks it's about behavior (or perceived behavior). Rachel was the popular cheerleader, Monica was the fat friend, and Phoebe was the weird homeless girl. Regardless of how they looked, Rachel is perceived as fitting the cool girl trope.
Exactly haha there isn't exactly a shortage of times the show points out that Monica and Phoebe are beautiful. A whole plotline is that a famous movie star finds Monica more beautiful than Rachel and so many men fall in love with Phoebe just based on her looks so I think it's kind of a poor example.
@@R_S747 This is very inaccurate. Rachel is the hot one... because she is more physically attractive than the other girls. The crowd does the choosing not the writers.
@@Heavy.is.the.head83 "she is more physically attractive than the other girls" except sooo many people in the comments don't share this opinion. I personally find Monica to be the most beautiful, a lot of people here are saying how Phoebe is the most beautiful. "The crowd does the choosing not the writers" except the writers chose to write scenes where Monica or Phoebe were seen as more desirable than Rachel
Like Chandler said to Mon, "You're the most beautiful woman in most rooms." The pretty one trope usually implies that she is from a privileged background and didn’t have to work a day in her life. Neither Monica nor Phoebe had that luck. Rachel did in the beginning, which is why she is the 'pretty girl' of friends.
I always thought that Rachel, Monica and Phoebe were just as gorgeous, yet Rachel was the designated "hot" one. It's likely because she was more into her looks than the other two.
Child me watching Friends with my big sister thought Monica was the best looking one and crushed on her, so revisiting the show as a teenager, I was taken aback to realize the show marked Rachel as the hot one. Also in hindsight, how did I not see I was gay! 😂
That's actually a good thing to point out, but that's also why she's designated "the spoiled one" or "shallow". She gets dragged for that on and off screen. It didn't come without a price, just saying! And she hates it when people call her that. When Ross puts it on the infamous list, she admits that she knows she is that but she's very insecure... I don't know how Leonard and Sandra treated their daughters, but I'm not surprised that Rachel has insecurities. And she's still a much better person than Jill and Amy. Edit: Welp, except I do know and it seemed very ... The kind of stuff that would mess you up.
Two things that singled out Rachel as the hot one were: 1. Ross was a very popular character at the time and his love for and his on again off again relationship with Rachel was central to a lot of storylines. Plus Ross was in unrequited love with Rachel for the whole first season of the show. So the idea of men being incredibly attracted to Rachel was introduced early and frequently during the series. 2. In real life Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green, dated and married the guy who was considered literally one of the hottest men, if not the hottest man ever in Hollywood, Brad Pitt. If Jennifer Aniston is good looking enough to attract the attention and "commitment" of a young, hot, and famous Brad Pitt she must be the hottest "Friend." Note how in both of these examples what makes Rachel the "hot one" is not any innate personality traits she has but just popular men being interested in her both on and off screen.
@@Shadow-zf5ucall that plus the fact that Rachel was meant to be an archetype before the casting and when Jennifer was chosen they carried on with the initial idea. In fact, Courtney Cox auditioned for the role until they realised that personality wise Monica was better match. Also, and talking about Ross, the creators wanted to make the cliché in movies of "geek gets the hot girl" and they had to play along(DS and JA are mote than average attractive people and she is not much more noticeably attractive than him for the trope to be believable)
Now Monica is the prettiest one to me personally because I prefer the dark hair and blue eyes combo but growing up Rachel was like the most beautiful woman ever to me
Same. I find people with features that aren't symmetrical to be very attractive, particularly in the younger years. I find it weird because symmetry is supposed to be the desired look. Granted, with age (50 plus or so) I think symmetry works better.
@@janetpelletier1238it would be interesting to see what we find attractive if media didn't tell us who was attractive. We're supposed to love Rachel the most because we can save her. She is this helpless beauty when she walks into Central Park and EVERYONE in the group helped to save her. It's like a princess trope. The princess is beautiful and needs our help so as to keep her beauty
I thought Phoebe was the prettiest but it was mostly disguised by her eccentricities, and 'weird-hippy-girl' wardrobe. Not that she always dressed oddly but moreso than the others, her outfits were less flattering, as that's the vibe the show seem to frame her with. Like it was subtly saying, "she *could* be hot if she was 'normal' but she's not because she's 'kooky' eh?" I feel like, in any other show, or just played differently on Friends, Phoebe would've been designated the snobby, hot, tall blonde model-chick or some-such.
Yeah for sure, they often dressed Phoebe in clothes that were purposefully unflattering (her worst colours, for example) which, as you say, goes some way towards showing us that Phoebe isn't someone who cares about looking Hot, at least not in a conventional sense. (But she still of course looks attractive)
@@Imokayluv you’re right, they were all hot and did know it and were confident in their ability to attract the guys they liked. I don’t think it was portrayed that Rachel was better looking than the others, but she was framed in such a way as to be The Hot One. I’m not sure how to articulate it though! I suppose it’s partly that she was portrayed as the most conventional (personality wise, and most focused on current trends) and therefore the most stereotypically hot.
I didn't really see Phoebe hot, at all. Both Monica and Rachel were. But I guess it's matter of opinion. It's not just looks, it's also personality amd how they are written.
I noticed this and it's funny to me because in if Gilmore girls was in real like I don't think rory would have been the hot friend in a group of girls she would've been the nerdy one, but I guess in a show full of characters like that she is the hot one
@@miranda_turtle0566honestly idk about that Alexis (the actress for Rory) is extremely beautiful. Her beauty is the only reason she has a career in the first place God knows she couldn't act for crap when she started starring in movies 😂
I always found Monica more gorgeous even though Phoebe and Rachel were beautiful in their own right. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder? But marketing and strong PR team can help you outshine too.
Monica had by far the best face. It was even often mentioned in the show, but she had been a big girl before so she still had that chip on her shoulder.
I am happy to see other people who thought Monica was the prettiest. I'm beginning to think everyone who insisted it was Rachel fell for the shows framing rather than their own eyes.
Are we not seeing the irony of trying to pinpoint the most gorgeous or ”best face” out of these groups of women once again? 😳 I do agree with the OP that beauty is in the eye of the beholder though and that is why these responses don’t make much sense to me. Literally all of the women mentioned in the video are beyond gorgeous! 🥰
Jennifer Aniston is also a better actress than the original part required, first the spoilt one then the 'hot' one. She grew out of' playing one facet of the character
@@AsMr-km6ex Yeah, I think in real life most men had a crush on Jennifer Aniston but I don’t think that she was the perceived “hot one” in the show. They established that she was the “popular” one in high school for sure, and Monica was heavy back then, but in terms of male suitors, Monica and Phoebe had A LOT and got a lot / equal admiration for their beauty by the male characters in the show.
I'd say Rachael edged out in front because of her character. Hotness is more than just being pretty. It's the way you hold yourself. Monica and Phoebe were more oddball archetypes. Rachael was a mess, but in a more relatable down-to-earth way.
This is amusing because I always found Rachel so unrelateable. I do agree that Monica and Phoebe were both written to be more quirky which is often on the opposite end of sexy for a lot of people.
@@NotAnotherKuromi I dunno, I found her quite sweet and warm, and easy to root for. She has more of a character arc than the others. Monica was prickly, set in her ways, and hard to live with - that was the joke. Phoebe was Phoebe, an almost child-like pixie, and is a whole alternative lifestyle choice.
Also Rachel played the “damsel in distress” role right from episode 1, and some men want to think of themselves as heroes that swoop in and save the day, so that’s why they’re more attracted to her too.
I always thought monica was the hottest one! I was surprised that everyone treated rachel as the hottest one. Apparently during filming, however, David and Matthew did have crushes on Jen!
I always thought Monica was the hottest one too but it seemed like everyone else said it was Rachel. I am surprised by this comment section saying it wasn't as rare an opinion as I thought.
That’s because being hot (IMO) is what you exude also. Courteney has the best facial features in the Friends cast, but it’s not enough to necessarily make her hot. She doesn’t give off that vibe, on or off screen. Jennifer’s got the charms, just a bigger appeal overall, and I guess that’s why so many men want to date her and so many women want to look like her.
I'm still suprised people think Jennifer Aniston is so hot considering how I don't see other women looking like her get called hot (besides being blonde.) I don't mean that she's ugly, but people used to drooool over Jen A. She looks in-the-ball-park like Kristen Wiig. I love Kristen Wiig and think she's pretty in her way, but people do not act like Kristen Wiig is super hot. I've seen a lot of comments on women with softer jawlines than her get called a man. I'm just confused by public opinion and how inconsistent they can be.
@@ZZ-qy5mvIn my opinion Jennifer looks nothing like Kristen Wiig in terms of physical appearance. Not that Kristen isn’t pretty but Jen’s definitely prettier, nothing to do with the shape of her jaw, which is in fact prominent but not in a distracting way
When we look at the hot girl, we only notice things on the surface, like her ability to attract men, but we fail to see the downside. While it may be flattering to have men gawk at you, it can also be disturbing, because you have no idea of the kind of attention you are attracting. The lovers of the hot girl love to control her and she is seen more as an object to her boyfriend/husband than a companion. Once Ross got with Rachel he was controlling, always belittled her for pursuing a career in fashion and in the end she gave up her dream career in Paris to be with Ross, while Monica and Phoebe ended up with supportive spouses. Marilyn Monroe divorced Jo DiMaggio after he beat her, it was said that he could not handle the pressure of being married to the pinup girl, Monroe’s next husband, Arthur Miller called her a horrible actress and a slut. As much as they try to glamorize this trope, there is tragedy on the other end.
I’ve heard similar stories too 😢 also plenty of the “pretty girls” have eating disorders and other mental health issues. Also guys treating them like objects. I have a friend who is very pretty and it’s sad to see men looking at her in a weird way. Specially older men when we were all minors
I think P&P is a bad example to use. Because Jane isn't the 'special' one, she isn't the protagonist or main love object of the story, Lizzie is, who is less pretty. It isn't an example of the 'hot one' trope but actually subverting it where Austen is saying that a woman's personality, spirit and intelligence is more important in making her interesting and finding her 'love' than her looks are. And this sentiment is repeated throughout her books, except for Emma (who would be a better example of the hot one trope between her and harriet - but also a criticism of it), the protagonist or main love object is never the prettiest in the room, it is more about her character and mind that attracts her love interest. more progressive than most stories today! The fact that it is Lizzie saying it to Jane without any jealousy also shows how the sister's don't have that cliche jealousy for each other, appreciate and can compliment each other, and that Lizzie isn't worried at all about being the 'prettiest' - even if her pride is hurt when Darcy calls her ugly, so we know she at least likes to be considered nice looking (who doesn't), this never results in a competition between women
It's funny, I never perceived any of the friends girls as more attractive than one another. If anything, I found it refreshing that they were all sort of on the same level.
I always thought Monica was the hot one. I would literally not let my eyes off her. Also it is speculated that Courtney was supposed to play as Rachel (because courtney is hot and the character Rachel is supposed to be hot) but later she said she wanted to play Monica because she thought she could play Monica better.
I remember whenever I was watching friends with my dad he’d always say Monica is hot and I always found her the most striking even tho Rachel and Phoebe are gorgeous too
When do you think they left the "hot one" behind? You used a clip from Riverdale which was not that long ago, Euphoria has the hot one, a lot of modern media continues this trope.
You're right in that a lot of Jen's screen time revolved around her on and off relationship with David Schwimmer's Ross, which dwindles compared to Courtney's and Lisa's. I liked it when Rachel's family members were on, and she comes off very well rounded when that happens and not "the hot one". Definitely not that way...
That's something that exists in the world of the story, but the framing of the show doesn't have to express approval of that. In fact, with context in mind, of the two sisters they chose, the love interest was the "less desirable" one by that world's standards.
@yundorphin edwina's stock plummets after she jilts anthony because people aren't sure if he wanted to call it off or if she did. it was implied both then and before when anthony wanted to call off the wedding that HE couldn't call it off because it would lessen her value in the eyes of society. her apparent value only rose once more after the queen implies that an even more eligible gentleman, a prince nonetheless, could possibly want her. this was seen by both the show and the audience as a triumphant moment for her with fans still hoping she married the prince. the framing may not express approval entirely (although it does in many ways) but it definitely doesn't express disapproval.
You guys are missing one important thing. This isn't about the difference between effortlesely hot and pretty but not hot, it's about universal appeal vs more specific appeal.
It also is a way to say "look we have diversity!!!" when they finally add a woman of color. When it's just hyper sexual, sassy and spunky character that traps women of color in a cartoonish character that is supposed to be next to do "sweet girl" who is often white, skinny and blonde.
Has it really changed, though? Nearly every younger actress in tv and movies still appears as though theyre hotter than anyone else regardless of their character type
As a woman who has some seriously attractive friends, I can say that I'm glad not to be "the hot one". Too many people give them a lot of attention for their appearance and completely miss the amazing, wonderful, funny, smart and kind women they are.
But Rachel was never really portrayed as the hot one as much as the video implies. She's the pampered rich girl. The hot one in the group is Joey. But okay I get that the Take wants to focus on women for this topic, so they had to pick Rachel. That kinda shows maybe Friends is not the best series to pick a female example of the "hot one" because, again, that wasnt Rachel's main trope.
Agree, in friends the characters were not as stereotypic as in other media. They were real people in exagerated situations, but real people by the end of the day. There are plenty examples of "the hot one" trope in other media, there is in fact a lot of sexist media to explore and criticize, but friends isn't one, it was pretty ahead of it's time.
@@goofyboots4828 yeah but mean girls kinda made it obvious bc the movie wants to point out all those imaginary competitions you think about as a teen and how they are useless and not important once you grow up
I lived in Eastern European country and because I'm Asian, I never have been considered attractive by majority of men and all women. Therefore I could have female friends, because they seen me as no threat. Some of my "friends" even were surprised when men liked me more than them and assumed they have some yellow fever. After moving to Germany, that changed because there is no such thing like "German women are most beautiful in the world". Some women are not eager to be friends with me, since I'm above average Asian for them.Worst was when I studied computer science, and female students were never talked with me because I was surrounded by many male students
I wouldn't consider Rachael a girl's girl, she basically hated every woman that tried to get closer to Ross. Not only in a jealousy way, it was deeper. She really likes to compete with every woman. She judged them by their looks, their style and had a constant need of making everything about her. I love Friends, and one thing I did learn from that show is to runaway from people like her.
Searching back on friends and I'm blown away by Phoebe's beauty, the high cheek bones, pretty almond eyes and oval face . But we were told to focus on Rachel because she had the most white sentric features
All things being equal the brunette is usually not going to be pegged as the hot one which could be another reason that Megan got knocked down a peg in favor of Rachel .
I don’t think being brunette counts against her in this case. I think a lot of it is the framing by the show, plus the character’s personality and perceived charisma. If anything, she’s a striking contrast and visually stands out next to the others lighter features. It may not have been as common I’ve seen some examples in older media, where brunettes are The Hot One. -Archie Comics has rich brunette city girl Veronica favored over sweet blonde, small-town Betty. -Mary Tyler Moore on The Mary Tyler Moore Show is portrayed as more desirable than “frumpy” Rhoda largely due to her being approachable to the point of getting taken advantage of for favors and sitcom shenanigans. -Lois Lane was one of the first superhero love interests. -There’s a movie where brunette Joan Collins is the hot, threatening love interest over the blonde “frumpy” housewife. I keep seeing clips on Facebook of a scene where the jealous wife, in tears, slaps Joan Collins who isn’t even phased and shoots her an “I already won” smile. - Agent 99 in Get Smart is a rare example of being framed as both hot AND smart - Even in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, brunette Dorothy is not actually portrayed as any less attractive. She just doesn’t play the part of the hot girl the way Lorelei (Marilyn) does. Dorothy gets just as much attention, and the attention she does get is often actually better quality. Nowadays, we’re refusing to be limited to The Smart One or The Hot One. We can be both.
Oh for sure. I thought that was also the case in the Gossip Girl. Serena was just blond and tall while Blaire had all the charisma and was overall much better looking. The audacity of the writers to make Blair feel like a plane jane was absurd. Also according to my brother most guys have a bit of a fixation with blondes. His friends would usually go for the blond girls just because of the hair, even if the brunette in the group was actually prettier.
@@Evija3000 Not every guy is into it, but the bright color is eye-catching for sure. It definitely gets more attention and benefitted by cultural interest, lots of representation, or white supremacy but it’s not always good attention. There are negative stereotypes associated with it too like being dumb, easy and always approachable. Or a trophy. Traits that many creeps like. I wouldn’t be surprised if the stereotype of blonde being youthful ties in to naïveté. I also have a conspiracy that because it’s one of the most expensive hair colors to achieve that requires the most work and upkeep, especially with bleaching and the damage that can do, that it’s promoted more to get people to spend money. Vs Brown which is one of the lowest-maintenance and therefore cheapest colors.
9:51 Maybe im just blind but I've always thought Monica was the hottest among the 3. I thought Rachel was suppose to he the ditzy but loving trope. I think this essay need to ask of rachel is hot accdng to the female gaze or the male gaze.
After Friends began, I remember People magazine featured CC on the cover of their yearly "50 most beautiful people in the world" and I bought a copy of it. In subsequent years, to my memory, CC was never featured again, but JA was always in it for many many years.
I’m sick of this trope because I do not have female friends because of it. I’ve been singled out and “picked” when I didn’t want to be, and that upset my female “friends.” I wish I could form friendships with women who aren’t threatened by the way men treat me, because I literally *cannot control it!!* I envy the kind of female friendships in shows like Friends because I would love to meet people who I didn’t get a sense were secretly competing with me, but rather who actually had my back and wanted the best for me. If you have those kind of friends, never take them for granted. You are truly blessed to have good people in your life. ❤
yeah, I saw an old interview saying Jen had that warm quality that made her lovable and desirable and even though Courtney was beautiful she had more of a cold beauty which didn't put her in that light. not a fan of these descriptions or comparisons, but there you have it I guess.
One who could make the case that Joey is the hot one from the three male Friends. Although we know he has other qualities, Joey's main point of desirability is his attractiveness and while Ross and Chandler are handsome, good catches and date a lot too, they have other points that seem to "lower down" their desirability (Chandler is uptight and sardonic, Ross is neurotic and conceited). Not to mention, at least when the show started, that Matt LeBlanc fits more the conventionally attractive mold than Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer and his previous roles leaned more into the "hot guy" role than the other two.
This new version of media is required and honestly one of the best things that have happened for women. It is really hard to come out of that mindset cause it is so naturally embedded in us to unintentionally compete for men's attention or come off as the pretty one. The male gaze concept really fucked us over. I am glad I was able to identify this problem and I have began tackling it at the age of 18. A better and more full future to all of the women! May you all break the shackles of this mindset and thrive in your life.
Phoebe is the best character but unfortunately She does not correspond to the beauty standard of society so she is forgotten while Rachel who is very beautiful (no one can say the opposite) will be more highlighted while she is the worst character of the show and that’s unfair.
I had a friend who was telling me about an incident with her and her past coworkers. She described herself as “the hot one”. It felt really patriarchal to hear that come out of her mouth. She quickly befriends her coworkers, so I’m sure she was friends with those girls and was secretly putting them down to lift herself up in her mind. I felt like if that’s how she thought, then she was also secretly comparing herself to me too. I cut her off.
Sometimes, it is our bodies chemistry. Let’s be honest even we as women, some men just make us feel in strong chemistry once we meet compared to others. And we regularly find women in love with that man and less with other men. Regardless of looks.
There were so many ensemble cast shows back then. This type of extreme fixation on Friends really undermines what was going on back then. Friends only became big through syndication and eventually global viewership. But global viewers have no idea all the other media that was present at the time. As always when it comes to American media they get what we give them.
Lisa’s character Ursula was portrayed a lot more as a hot girl on Mad About You (of course this character later crossed over to Friends but was a lot more exaggerated at that point)
I never got the type around Jennifer Anniston.. she looked the most average out of the three. Her personality was relatable but it didn’t make her more attractive than the other two IMO
Hot is most often just about wardrobe. To make SMG the hot one on Buffy, they had to keep Allison Hannigan dressed as a giant toddler. I don’t think they started pushing Aniston as the hot one until she got “The Rachel,” which came with short skirts and tight sweaters.
I see Rachel the 'cute 'one, especially if we compare her to some really gorgeous actresses. Jennifer is beautiful, but not the way that takes you breath away.
didn't some guy get famous for saying "I aint never seen two pretty best friends , one of them I always ugly" they may be merit to this as it pertains to men. It's not that one is ugly its usually that one of them is not "his type" and in fairness one shouldn't be because that would mean he is attracted to your friends and his type is everybody lol
I remember thinking it was totally unrealistic when every male character in a TV show would get attracted to the same woman. That was before I met my present day best friend, who gets hit on by every guy she knows, and my gay ass is like "What does everyone see in her?"
Rachel always dressed hot... With the stylish hair and the hot girl makeup... Monica dressed in flowy simple t shirts and tops that made her look a little tomboyish...while Phoebe was the weird, hippie boho one with eccentric looks... Sp its obvious, Rachel will be seen as the hot one
When my Dad was alive, he always assumed that any and all of my male friends were "romantically interested" in me. He would always ask me "How do you feel about this guy? Do you LIKE him?" I usually said we were only platonic friends, and he NEVER understood that! (He was born in the 1920s)! If you want friends, you should have ONLY girls as friends, or it will lead to Disaster!
Thank you for pointing out that whilst Friends has some outdated jokes that simply don't fly anymore and it's a very cis white straight cast... it broke ground with it's female and male characters in other ways. Like challenging female roles of "hot", "house-wife" or "weirdo"... And how supportive and LOVING the male characters are with each other - a stark contrast to the way masculinity is usually portrayed, which causes more harm than good as men bottle their emotions and isolate themselves which leads to a sad reality of the biggest source of mortality of young males being suicide. Friends did a lot of good for the time it was created, and that's why I, a 90s kid, love it as much as I do.
i think its the stereotype of the blonde being the "bombshell" and it wasnt phoebe because she was seen as the "simple" more comical character, but i do think monica is stunning
As far as Friends is concerned, one of the main creative forces in the show was a woman. Marta Kaufman was a (co-)creator, showrunner, writer, executive producer and casting director of the show.
If she was a minority, she wouldn't have much say and power in it. I experienced this many times, it gives illusion of inclusion but overruled by majority
" ... and now we are finally controlling how we are seen by the world." - that's not how that works ... you can control how you present yourself, but you can't control how other people percieve you. You must become a master of poise, etiquette, and style to even remotely potentially have some control in that aspect.
In Beverley Hills there were TWO hot girls: Brenda and Kelly. Then, in a rather unexplicable turn, screenwriters started to make Donna as the hot girl. And this had nothing to do with the fact that Tory Spelling was the producer's daughter.
How are so many of you gonna say that this hot trope isn’t real or it shouldn’t exist. But then continue to compare the actresses in the comments (specifically Jenifer Aniston) and then say someone else was better than her in the looks department. You obviously think she’s beautiful but don’t like she got chosen for the position. You all wanna say “this male in my life he found blank hotter than Rachel” like why are you going out of your way to bring that gorgeous woman down to somehow counterpart for the hot girl trope. You look ridiculous.
The thing is that being hot is about attitude. You can be pretty but some women just don't have the sex appeal or flirty personality to display being the hot one... That's why some girls get more attention than others despite being beautiful and with rachel and monica the thing that set them apart was personality, monica was too uptight to be the hot friend
As someone not a part of the target audience of this show I found none of these people attractive as a kid and still don't (to me). Which is the reminder of how subjective manufactured beauty ideals are.
08:48 That's a very important detail. The Hot Girl trope is at first based on how she is protrayd as hot by others. But how she sees herself is a defining feature of how she'll move her plot along. Besides, how will she change when she come to belief how others see her, that she's prettier than she thought she was? Can she embrace her hotness and help this get the thing she wants in the plot? Or will it annoy her because she knows she is so much more than her looks?
it's funny that clips of Riverdale showed up cuz even before they did, I thought of the redhead -- not sure what her name was since I only saw a few episodes, a long time ago. She isn't shown in the clips but it was hilarious to me that in the cheerleader tryouts or whatever, Veronica's dance thing is supposed to be better than the one the redhead did 😂 as a dancer myself, Veronica's was a bit painful to watch, while the other girl owned it. So even when the directors and story try to force "the hot one" on us, we as the audience can't help but laugh in the face of it
for a long time i thought i was broken because i never favored the "hot one". and i like glasses. and Courteney Cox will always be the One From Misfits O' Science.
Them all being attractive on Friends was why singling out Rachel was funny. I preferred Monica myself, but she didn't have a hairstyle named after her, which pretty much seals the deal. Women saw Rachel as the hottest of the trio just as much as men, because I'll tell you a secret: Guys don't care about hairstyles that much to make it a fad. This video doesn't talk enough about the pride in being The Hot One, and how there can be ownership in that. I think of Sex and the City (really surprised it didn't get a mention), where The Hot One was obviously Samantha. And in secret agent stories like Charlie's Angels, playing up being the Hot One in the group even helps with missions. And from the male perspective, Templeton "Face" Peck from The A-Team is literally this. (Played by Bradley Cooper in the film adaptation, also arguably "The Hot One" of the friends in the Hangover movies). So sure, everybody's beautiful in their own way, and sunshine and rainbows and kumbaya yada yada. But flattening this all out has certainly been one of the contributors to media being a lot more boring to watch and talk about, that's for sure. So let's get down to it: Saved by the Bell- The Hot One: Kelly Kapowski. Three's Company- The Hot One: Chrissy The Brady Bunch- The Hot One: Marcia. Literally drives Jan nuts! Totally Spies!- The Hot One: Clover (I don't make the rules) The Fellowship of the Ring- The Hot One: Legolas. See? A League of Their Own- The Hot One: Madonna's on the team... The Take- The Hot One: ??
I love the irony that they flipped the idea of girls fighting for the love interest and made the guys have those situations instead! When we think about it, it's funny and a nice twist
Jennifer had lots of hair care advertisements and was the most high profile publicly. This, coupled with being married to Brad Pitt played a big role in her being the hot one imo
