In the 6th episode of Paths Less Traveled - Iran, I’m visiting what is said to be the hottest place in the world! The Lut Desert, widely referred to as Dasht-e Lut (دشت لوت / کویر لوت) is a salt desert located near the city of Kerman in Iran.
The surface of its sand has been measured at temperatures as high as 70.7 °C (159.3 °F), making it one of the world's driest and hottest places.
Starting in Kerman city, I meet up with a couple of new friends that I’ve been meeting along the road in my travels across Iran, and we head towards the desert.
On the way we stop at the magical Shahzadeh Mahan Historical Garden (باغ شاهزاده ماهان), a fantastic Persian garden providing a splash of green and seeming oasis in the desert land outside of Kerman.
We then head to the nearby Shah Nematollah Vali Shrine (آرامگاه شاه نعمت الله ولی) in Mahan (ماهان) - The peaceful shrine and tomb of a revered Iranian Dervish.
Then it’s time to head to the desert! We stop a little outside of the small city of Shahdad (شهداد) for a lunch of the local dish, Boz Ghorme and a sample of the Iranian picked garlic, Toshi Seer, aged for 2 years!
Then it’s into the 4x4, and into the desert itself, heading off road into this brutal landscape.
Come and join me to see this wonderfully different side of Iran!

PATHS LESS TRAVELED
In the late summer of 2022 I embarked on an epic road trip around Iran, during a time of unrest as protests escalated across the country.
Covering around 6200km over 24 days, I was able to see this incredible country in a way that many are not fortunate enough to see, and to record my experiences in a way that has not been done before.
Safety concerns meant that I had to limit my filming on occasion, and stay well away from any signs of the troubles going on.
However, what I did see was an incredible insight. Some of the most wonderful and welcoming people, incredible history and culture, and mind blowing food.
Paths Less Traveled - Iran is my story of my experiences, put in an in-depth series of Iran travel vlogs.

Persian gardens actually predate Islam/the Quran. The word paradise actually derives from Old Persian pairidaeza, pairi meaning "around" (think peri-meter) and daeza meaning "wall." Basically, it meant "walled enclosure." The Greeks saw a garden in the middle of a desert as a paradise and took its name to mean that, rather than just a garden or fortress.

Thank you! This was recorded just with a GoPro Hero 10 + media mod and either Rode Wireless Go mic or a shotgun mic. Food closeups or lower light on my iPhone. I have to keep it fairly cheap and simple for now as my channel is still small. Thanks for your support!

@Chris Kermis hi Chris, thanks for replying. I've gone down the rabbit hole with your channel and have loved your style of travel videos. I just finished your Iran series and see you listed the name of your travel guide and the tour company. Iran looks fantastic. Thanks to your videos, I would love to plan a trip there eventually when the political situation improves - something that I wouldn't even have considered prior to "meeting you"! All the best with your channel and travels.

Good to hear! 🙂 I hope you make it some day and certainly at a safe time. I wasn’t there at the best time of course but that couldn’t be helped as the protests started just after I arrived.

Kerman is my hometown. You didn't go to Kerman's bazar?
@ChrisKermis
@ChrisKermis Год назад
I did just before leaving, and that’s actually a big part of the next video which airs at 6pm CET on Sunday 11th (tomorrow). Much was closed when I was there as it was a holiday but I had an amazing time trying nuts and spices there. Only a fraction made it into the video as I didn’t want to bore people!

@@ChrisKermis I go back and visit every 3 years or so. At lease twice I must go to the bazar and walk the entire length from one end to the other, and you may not believe it but I truly get high just by being present; a unique type of euphoria. Must be because of childhood memories mixed with the beauty and age of the place.

Which month and day were you in this region? Because Iran has an incredibly diverse climate system from the south to the middle of the country and further north. There are only some areas that get super hot near the summer. But the desert portion which is not that large compared to the rest of the country is fairly nice in the late fall and winter.
@ChrisKermis
@ChrisKermis Год назад
Certainly I wasn't there in the hottest part of the year, that would be too much! I was there sometime in late September. It was fairly hot but not unbearable. It actually felt hotter down at Qeshm due to the humidity

Paradise is not model of quran. Paradise is older than islam and quran. It's a persian thing back to achamanid empire. You can find first persian garden ruins in Pasargadae back in 550 bc
