Hot take: Sid from Toy Story was actually a genius whose experiments with toy modification were ahead of their time. He attempted to pioneer Combat Carl space flight and would have been successful if not for his limited resources as a child of the 90s. I believe the entire Toys Story saga to be a dream of Sid's being one of the few people to see them alive. If Sid had worked for Hot Toys today each figure would be much more awesome, they would use premium materials instead of crap, there would be a good Mark Hamil head sculpt and the Ironman figures would fire actual lasers. He is misunderstood and we missed out by his decision to move away from toy modification to industrial waste disposal. All Andy ever did was write his name on other people's hard work. Also the toy collector from Toy Story 2 is like all of us but if Hot Toys had made the Woody line they would have fallen apart in the box by now so his contact in Japan would have paid much less.

Great video, Keco. I do appreciate that you are talking about some of these takes and other "controversies" in the community, even when I don't agree with your stance. It is good to have a dialogue going. Definitely agree with your position on Exclusives, half the fun of collecting is the chase for the hard to get pieces.

I agree if flippers in any category whether it be cards, sneakers, funko, houses, coins or whatever. If they are willing to spend the money, take the risk, be first, and so on then kudos for them. We could all do it, most of us just choose not to. So why spend time and energy on those that do. I think in any consumer market even with exclusive clothes or motorcycles, it’s very important to have exclusive and rare hard to get items in order to balance it all out. I just feel like the influencers getting early access happens in every single market. Whether it be phones, purses, technology, or anything else.

My hot take is that for most characters there’s no such thing as a definitive version as their looks often change such as Luke Skywalker who has a different definitive look in each movie signifying his character arc from farm boy to Jedi to Jedi knight and later to hermit and finally as a returning hero. I think the idea of “definitive version” only works for characters like Wolverine who took 20+ years to finally get his comic book outfit on screen.

1. Flippers/Scalpers often use underhanded techniques like bots to get in the line before others. 2. Influencers can be toxic sure, but their definitive statements about "grails" and "must-haves" is what irritates me the most. 3. Exclusives are ok if we can obtain regular versions of the same figures without unnecessary chase. 4. FOMO is a real problem that we need to fight ourselves. With ourselves. 5. Yeah, I don't have income to comfortably collect these figures but thankfully I manage to buy 3-5 a year without getting into trouble. 6. I'm afraid that rooted hair will age as well as pleather...

This is more of a general hot take about hot toys : Age of Ultron is one of the best lines Hot Toys has ever done. This is the last time (for now) we see all the original avengers with their more traditional looks like Hawkeye and Hulk, almost every headsculpt they did other than Black Widow were great, and they did almost every character in the movie that needed to be made and didn’t leave us wanting more characters but also wasn’t an overwhelming amount of figures.

I tire of "collectors" who complain about exclusives and limited runs. Has this era of immediate gratification robbed toy enthusiasts of the thrill of the hunt? I know, everyone collects differently, but where is the fun in being able press a button and preorder everything you want? That's not collecting, that's consumerism.

Hot Takes, 🤣. I came into Hot Toys from collecting fashion dolls where there are similar and different comments. There are flippers there too along with the box worshippers and the customizers and very few complaints about visible joints. Now rooted hair, there are innumerable complaints on quality, stylability, etc. I remember distinctly a deep discussion with a friend about the price a customizer was charging for some "enhanced" dolls.

I think one of the big things I am against is seeing joints on exposed arms...like I really want the Cable figure, but that exposed elbow joint is just too lazy for me to pay that kinda price for it. It instantly makes it look cheap.

Good Megatron impersonation! While I dislike flippers, they are essential to any collecting community as they keep the collectable sought after and give it value. Perhaps this is my hot take. Exclusives being limited creates stir and gives you that chase as you said. It only loses fun when you are never able to obtain said collectable time after time again. Numbered items sell more, just facts (95% of the time). If flippers aren't buying that particular collectable, most likely there is not demand for it and possibly on the decline. Hot Toys needed to reduce amount of inventory produced in order to save the company and not become the next beanie babies or Funko (though I didn't think they were quite in dire straights). I like the concept of rooted hair, especially when not much work needs to be done straight out of the box. Mostly for me, I'm perfectly fine paying $150 to $100 less for sculpted hair vs rooted/wool hair, as I think the sculpted has been looking better lately (Aragorn, Iron Spider, HT 2019 new Joker artisan). Great topic for discussion!

Constructive criticism here keco. I enjoy your content most times. I like the topics you choose the discussions are fun. A lot of you views I agree with too. How ever I do think that you come across a bit negative or Debbie downerish. For me personally it sucks the fun out off collecting sometimes. It’s not what you say it’s how you say it. An example like with inart in think I remember you saying you doubt they will be in business in 10 years. Which is a fair view point but they way you said it just was like why should I say even buy from them if they aren’t gonna be around. And that just sucked the fun out of all the hot toys inart conversations cause it feels like they are just competing with a dead company…. Hot Toys Hot Take. Artisan is a BS name to charge more for "life like hair". They made several female figures in the past with rooted hair and charged standard prices before. Guarantee the next Wonder Woman will be Artisan and charge 350, vs the 250-280 they charged before.
