You know it's good stop motion, when you stop thinking it is made in stop motion. The animation, cinema photography and lighting catches the interest of the viewer and then all you can do is focus on the story. And so, this is a prime example of successfully executed stop motion film.

i think the overall theme is materialism. Throughout the whole film, the characters are more focused on material things rather than their family, mental health, and wellbeing. in part one, i feel as though it represents how the rich prey on the poor, creating this sort of endless cycle of materialism and feeling like what you have isnt enough. wanting to be on top. wanting to have jt all. the father looks down on his old home and laughs, as if mocking squalor, completely ignoring that he lived there mere hours ago. Their children have no concept of riches and money. But rather comfort. Family. The children’s comfort and family are replaced by material items. And one could argue that the heavy prescence of green in the house represents greed. the second story was.. something… I feel like it was kind of ironic considering the main character was a mouse, trying to get rid of pests. I guess its sort of a story abut ignoring your problems in an attempt to achieve something higher. Or, it represents the concept of insanity. trying something again and again only to get the same result. the last story of course represents letting go of material things. letting go of greed. not letting greed consume and kill you. Rosa is the only person in the house concerned with money. which again is ironic, because in her situation there is no need for money. The other characters are more aware of this. and instead offer rosa things that will assist in her survival. things she really needs. like food, friends, and fun. but rosa denies she needs these things, insisting that she needs money instead. She doesnt realize what she truly needs until everyone leaves her, pushed away by her greed in a sense. when she learned to let go, she is truly free.

They did such beautiful work. In the first one we can see Mabel playing with dolls in what seems to be a smaller version of The House, maybe foreshadowing already that they were puppets of the devil, just like she was playing with those dolls.Either way the first one was the most brilliant and unerving one

The second ending legitimately terrified me I've always had the fear that I would never make it in life and end up in some old ruddy place basically falling apart… that's probably why I found it so damn scary 😅

I think the house represents life. The first story: the family has the opportunity to live a better and more wealthy life, and you can slowly see that the only people who care about the material things are being consumed by it. The lights represents how they are blinded by the materialistic things and the lavish lifestyle. The second story: It’s a person so wrapped up in putting on this image of perfection when on the inside they are not as well put together as they try to seem. You can see when the rat sort of breaks in the bathroom and becomes almost manic in showing off. In the end, the true ugliness came out into light. The third story: Rosa is a person who is stuck in the past and living life to her plan. As anyone would know, life never goes as plan. So the house breaking and the flood getting closer and closer to the house I believe that’s anxiety of not knowing and also the realization that the dream she wants to come true simply can not be. She has these people in her life who are getting up and moving on and it scares and angers her. She’s scared of the unknown but the people around her has embraced it and are leaving. She’s angry because she thinks they are leaving her when they are only moving on in life. Then she realizes she has to move on, she can’t keep harping on this dream life she put together in her head. The house turning into a boat is her keeping the memories and at the same time taking that step forward into the unknown, letting go of what can’t be, and moving on

I actually think the third story is the strongest because it's about Rosa choosing to move on with her life. If you grew up in a small town, or your parents had to sell your childhood home, or you have to leave for college, etc. There's a lot of sadness tht can come with moving on from a life you've had for well... your whole life. It's clear that Rosa associates the house with her parents and that leaving the house would leave behind a big part of herself and may even symbolize moving on from the death of her parents. The house allows her to remember and it gives her a lot of comfort. Struggling with losing it tears her apart. But in being so invested in the house she is also very lonely. Each of the stories has a lot to say about interpersonal relationships and the lives inside of homes. The theme of matierial possessions in the first story comes full circle in the third because Rosa has to learn that her sentimental obsession with the house caused her to miss out on having a fuller life with better relationships with her friends. The third story also relates to the second because both protagonists are trying to renovate a home that clearly cannot be saved. But the renovator has no emotional ties to the home and no family or friends to support him so the house envelopes him, eats him like it did its original victims. When Rosa finally realizes that she doesn't want to be alone her friends have already left, and she now wants to leave too because she would rather feel loved than continue to nurse something that can't return love to her. When she pushes the lever, it's to see if she can leave the house behind. Her being able to take the house with her simply symbolizes that her childhood and lost family members will still be a part of her no matter where she goes. And now she can face the future with her found family. The third chapter is about growing up. I think it's a shame this guy gave such a thurough review/praise to the first two chapters but left the third chapter dangling like that. It can relate to the themes of both chapters 1 and 2 but it stands on its own just fine.

My favourite part was the last part. I related a lot to Rosa because I could literally feel her anxiety. Also at one point while I watched the last part I was theorizing (for fun) that maybe it's the afterlife they're all stuck in. Sort of like purgatory. and Rosa actually died in the flood by the house. So her sailing away was her moving on to whatever comes next.

Did anybody notice in the second story when the mouse had his open house, the weird baby crying name was Isobel?

I felt so bad for the Rat working so hard. Then being absolutely baffled by those squatter creatures lol

The song during the credits was very neat. It roughly says "A house is a pile of bricks but a home is where you never feel alone"

"An early grave. A poor investment. Such a big mistake." I thought for the 3rd story is that they're actually all dead, died from the flood. Jen and Eliot have been ready to move on but Rosa's obsession with the house prevented that, and in some sense still does. The house never left the land it was built on, it just disconnected from a larger piece. Rosa was able to move on from her obsession but she wasn't able to let go of the house. The poor investment is of course the rat and a big mistake are the parents agreement.

All three parts have a theme of obsession 1st obsession for approval of others 2nd obsession to the point of having nothing else 3rd obsession of not letting go and changing for the better

I watched it because it had comedy in genre list. Well I understood nothing from the animation itself, but it was quite well animated. Thanks for this explanation

The first one has too be my favorite, but the ending scene of the second part is going to haunt me 😂😭 I interpreted it a little differently, this is what I thought: I interpreted it as a metaphor for a persons life, beginning in childhood(the first part) and ending in adulthood(the last part). I found it interesting the first part seemed centered around a child and her witnessing her parents turn into sofas. This is very symbolic of how children watch their parents grow up without realizing it, and many watch their parents fall into the trap of materialism. Not too mention how many children feel like their absent parents do become one with the couch. They were placed in front of a fireplace that in part two was a TV. The child witnesses this in confusion and fear and leaves to start a different path. In the second part, I interpreted this a teenager or young adult, still living in their family baggage or trauma but dressing it up and disguising it to the public. This doesn’t work, and toxic people take advantage of the carpenter. They move in without much resistance and they live in filth together, tearing down anything beautiful which masks the shameful infested house underneath. The third part would be symbolic of adulthood. In dream interpretation, water is a sign of strong emotion. This could be the overwhelming emotion of being in that same family trauma or baggage but being ready to move on. Although the owner is stubborn and wants to pretend she can fix the house, it takes the encouragement and strength from her friends to truly transform her perception and explore the world, embrace the water and not fear it. This was simply my first interpretation while watching the movie. I found it striking that none of the characters were able to escape the house besides the children in the first part.

The movie felt like something my English teacher In high school would play and have us analyze it lol but I really loved the second part and the third was such An amazing wrap up to the story

During the 2nd short: The mouse is seen scratching his head all thought the short in the same spot. Then at the end we see him scratching the same spot but this time with his foot in a way that a normal animal would. I think this represents his underlining issues how he’s always had problems he’s been trying to hide, just like putting on the suit. At the end he finally turns into the true animal he was trying to cover up symbolizing that his issues have taken over and he can no longer hide them.

ngl how different the three stories were to each other kind of confused me at first, but thinking about it more they all have a common theme of these characters like, dealing with being materialistic as some sort of coping mechanism. Having the last main character free herself from that was a good idea for an ending too, because otherwise the movie would've felt kind of unsatisfying.

My fav part probably has to be part 3 as to the house symbolized depression in a way. Rosa is watching everyone leave and the flood is only getting worse. Everyone is telling her to leave but she just can’t, until eventually, in the end, she can finally grab ahold of the home and feels like a breathe of fresh air.

Just a thought but i think the mouses who ended up staying in the house are the infestation. They had the same shapes as the beetles and “worms” ( forgot what they were), this made it feel more creepy as to they were the exact same shape just bigger and in a disguise.

I'll share my thoughts first, and then I'll read the comments. To begin with, you may have noticed that each story emphasized the basement: the girl found the remains of an old house there, the mouse lived in the basement while he made repairs, and the cat didn't notice that her basement was flooded. It is clear that the basement is subconscious. The relationship to it showed what would happen to the hero at the end. Each story shows a different development of the character's psyche. In the first, they lost their foundation, destroyed it and ceased to exist (loss of identity). In the second the hero stayed in the subconscious and went crazy (personality degradation), in the third the protagonist realized her situation and began to move on (personality liberation). That is, all the stories are connected by a common idea. Then about the second story. Yes, compulsive visitors are bugs: long and wide. The hero in the beginning tried to flush them out using chemicals. He doesn't realize that he can't handle it all by himself. He keeps emphasizing how independent he is, but it's obvious that he's overworked and needs a break. Because of this, he didn't keep track of how he inhaled the fumes and started hallucinating, which caused him to see bugs as guests. At the end he inhaled the fumes again and went to the hospital, and when he came back he met the bugs, realizing that he was no longer going to make it, started living like them. Third story. I have only a guess here, but that's how I see it, that the residents of Rosa's house are her family: her brother, mother, and father - so they pay nothing for living expenses. Her mother supports her spiritually, her father is long gone because he works and does not devote himself to his family, while she knows nothing about her brother's hobbies and is perpetually angry with him, even though he is a member of her family and does not deserve to be treated that way. At first we are shown as if Rosa is the most adequate and the others are crazy. Then it is revealed that it is Rosa who is stuck in the past and the family is free to move on into the future. When they sailed away from her, it turns out that they were left waiting in a fog - indicating that all the characters in action live in Rosa's head, that they are not independent and have nowhere to go. The fact that Rosa didn't notice her basement flooding is a disregard for real problems. Trying to build a house and getting paid by the new tenants was an attempt to return to her family, to get from her loved ones what she was not getting. But the family never accepted her, and Rosa was stuck on the idea. But at the end she freed herself and realized she had to move on. So this story is the most metaphorical at all: there is no home, no characters. It's all happening in the character's head. After losing her family, she realized that these people meant a lot to her and that without them there was no point in her staying at home anymore. That is, she realized that the real purpose of fixating on the house was not the house itself, but the desire for intimacy. UPD: while I was sleeping, I realized one more thing. The second story is a reference to Cronenberg with his movie Naked Lunch, where the main character, working as an exterminator, takes bug poison as a drug, goes crazy and starts running secret errands for the bugs. The mouse also gets poisoned, goes crazy, and starts talking to the bugs.

I liked Rosa story of moving forward on but not letting the past hold you down.

So much symbolism. We are our possessions. Like the voice says in the credits, “we follow directions and it leads to self destructions” why did the children not follow? Because they’re still innocent and not tainted by human greed. We are also the rodents, when you zoom out. We see rodents as the invaders as the mice see the bugs as the nuisance. But aren’t we the same? It’s interesting the director chose mice over humans too. As if to force us to not see ourselves as the superior. Then it ends with cats in the post world… (global warming). Cats were an interesting choice… I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on what that symbolizes. But the ending to me shows that material possessions are what are destroying us and as long as we continue to not see that truth, we will continue to destroy our planet. But like the ending said, we can try again to seek the light. (Or something like that) Also - just noticed that at the beginning there is some foreshadowing… the little girl is playing with her dollhouse that’s a replica of the house, with mice dolls who are the later characters in the third act. Perhaps meaning, humans at first felt in control… until we started to destroy ourselves.

i wish the first part wouldve been the whole movie, like a continuation of the first part rather than two new stories

I actually think i liked part III the most, it was a liberation from the cycle of the previous characters (and stories) that took place way before. I like the fact that not only Rosa broke the cycle, but that the house itself was freed as well. It was _definitely_ the most uplifting of the three stories Although, yeah.. the first story is definitely the most creepiest and the darkest of them all, and i give that credit for where credit is most certainly due!

While I was sleeping, I realized one more thing. The last short there was definitely a sort of symbolism with the mind, with the pessimism / nihilist being Elias, optimism / nurturer being jen , Realist being Rosa and cosmos being a Relativist, its kinda messy but you get the idea lol

the first one was creepy, the second one was mildly horrifying, the third one was wholesome and sad. One of the best movie Ive seen in a while.

I actually think the whole thing is about classism. Most obvious in first part where the family agrees to essentially become dolls for this wealthy and likely insane monster. The only reason they agree is for the chance at seeming better to the dad's well-off family. The second part where crime is just breezed over for the wealthy and a man's hard work is stolen with ease despite the contractor toiling for years and destroying his life. All while the wealthy families just destroy his hard work. And that's before the extremely interested buyers move in and force him into servitude and feralness with only the promise of a better life. The final one flips the script and shows us Rosa, who HAS reached the highest rung on the social ladder. She's the weathiest and most prosperous land owner in town. But there's no one else IN town. She has plans and plans to rebuild the house, but can't. Her tenants seem like layabouts, but over the course you learn that Elias' fish and Jen's garden are the only sources of food. Rosa is so enamored with the idea of creating this home and the status it'd bring that she neglected the people and berated them with unreasonable expectations for money. It's only when she abandons the empty promise the house had and uses it for a new purpose that she and her new family are free.

I gotta admit I did not get the last two parts, and had only a vague idea of what the first part was.

When the couple rats kept on saying that they were extremely interested in the house actualyy meant that they were interested in not living in it but in eating it.

Stop motion is a a very uncommon and very underutilised style in the animation industry. It adds so much more flavour to the characters and entertainment.

Part 1 should definitely be a series. I really loved part 3, but I think it had a good ending. Part 1 was just very interesting and left me with many questions. Also the name of the street in the second short was the guys name in the first short. I also noticed the fireplace being a main centerpiece in all of the shorts. The dad was obsessed with it in the first film. In the second film, the fireplace became an oven, and the main mouse crawled into it. In the third film, it looks like the girl’s whole plan for the house was on the fireplace.

Why did Rosa need money to buy things to fix the house when there are no more stores and money is useless

Anyone else feels like people only focusing on the creepy parts misses the point of the story? Like yes I understand 3 wasn't your favorite because it wasn't scary but I think that because the creator wanted to get his point across and he didn't need to scare you for it, he already did two story's ago

I was having an existential crisis by the time I finished watching it

I think there may be a connection in all the stories with the color green. In the first part, when they get to the house, there were lots of green elements, such as the curtains. During that time period, the color green was seen as a sign a wealth since it was so rare, but the pigment that was used to make it, contained arsenite, which was toxic and killed anyone close to it. It symbolizes how being caught up in their materialism, lead to thier downfall. In the second one, the powder bottle that he used to kill the beetles was also green. He sprayed that stuff everywhere, just hoping it would go away, instead of solving it properly. He too met his demise from his refusal to use the proper solution. In the final part, the wallpaper that rosa was putting up was green. She was ignoring the actual problem and just trying to cover it up with pretty wallpaper. Luckily, she was able to let go of it and gain some amount of control. They were all using green to cover the actual problems in their lives, just like how people use money to cover theirs. The common theme in all of these stories is losing control and losing what really matters. They all opted to just cover it up on the surface instead of fixing it up from the roots. They were so lost in their delusions to the point where they're too blind to notice what's actually happening around them. All in all, it's a great movie with lots of symbolism still left to uncover.

There lies a continuum I think...the first part is about letting yourself be led into a treacherous path, the second is about descending into madness as you lose sight of the truth and lose touch with yourself and the third is about freeing yourself from your inner demons, searching for the truth and seeking the light at the end of the tunnel.

1st story gave me crazy deja vu. Could've sworn I remember reading a short story where the characters had the same fate

Someone I work with told me they thought it was about children. Part one about a child coming to terms with its environment. Part two is the fear and pain of having children. And three is when the kids move out. I thought that was a really interesting take since I didn’t see it like that! Also part one was my fave. How terrifying was the bit where that guys head was massive and he came up behind the man that works for him? I was utterly terrified.

As I heard in a song "If you are not very careful, your possessions will possess you," and I think this is the main idea of this movie. A very important message for our society nowadays.

I loved the aspect of the 3rd part where Rosa is a typical western living person and looks down on happy free spirited people and thinks they are doing things wrong .. makes you question what really is happiness these days

Definitely love the 1st story, 2nd story was a bit unsettling yet good. But, I can relate most on the 3rd story. The feeling of being stuck and afraid to move forward. Still battling with it until now because of anxiety. Hope they make more movies like this and with all those creepy animations.

The movie would've been way more interesting if it was broken up into 3 full length movies because there is so much unexplained filler and lore in the stories

I honestly have to disagree. As I was watching with friends, people kept insinuating that the house itself was cursed. But the credits song at the end strengthened my belief that the house was just a house. How people see and view the house is what is twisted about it. Being seen as a change of status, a way to profit and then finally as a place to live. Having one protagonist escape the wickedness of how the house was being used, one protagonists that ended up embracing it's destruction and the last protagonist that ultimately refused to do either. Which is why I think the final protagonist was the only one with the happy ending. Perhaps in the end her willingness to move forward without letting go of the house, she found a way to keep everything that was valuable to her. Because despite the houses faults and decaying form she was still desperate to save it for a place where her and others can live and grow together. The literal definition of a home. Though art is subjective so I can't say that I'm right or wrong. But I never got the sense that the house was cursed at all. Just that it wasn't being used as intended until the very end.

I loved the whole movie, but the first part was definitely on another level. Both the aesthetic and the plot were amazing, it reminded me so much of coraline, one of my favorite movies. And all of the 3 endings were just perfect , they are a great representation of the curse affecting the house (even tho the 2nd one was so unsettling it was hard to watch, the synchronized clapping legit sent chills down my spine lmao)

I think the reason it went from man in the past to rats in the present and cats in the future is because the rats and bugs (symbolising the fleas) were what killed man with the plague and the cats killed the rats

Honestly this is my favourite Netflix movie now the style is so interesting and unique and I hope they make more like this.

for me the best part was the first part...it symbolizes the destructive power of money on people. especially on adults. and we see how the children are innocent and unaware of this miserable system. really sad to see how their parents become sofa at the end. this is one of the most powerful scenes of the film and the other one is the mice where we find him as a real mice like a parasite...Very well designed the whole animation!!!

Love the house. My favourite part was the III because I felt It talked about the detachment with material things and show us the importance not to have a house but a home. So deep and powerful film.

Just watched the movie and had to look for other comments and perspectives in YT!! I agree w soo many comments and couldn’t have analyzed it better! Defo this movie is really surprising! It got me once I did not expect such creepy histories! The first anthology is my favorite. The narrative, characters and animation are superb! So unique! Also really loved the end and the hopeful insights it brings: ‘Just move on, be open to change and let it go.’ It’s so thought provoking and made so much sense for me. It’s a movie really worth watching! Hope you do before reading so many spoilers! Lol ;)

The message that I got from the last part was to let go of the past and realize that you can’t fix it and just learn to live and move on

I think there are the three forms of despair depicted in the movie. The first one represents the despair of not knowing what to do. The second one represents the despair of trying and trying and being unable to succeed. The third one represents the despair of being literally unable to do anything at all, when it's just impossible to fix something. I saw it as the first part is the reaction we have when we lose something or someone, then the second part is us trying to get back up but failing, and the third part can be seen as only the feeling of incapacitation OR the feeling of finally being able to let go.

I didn’t like it that much. I think more powerful messages and symbolisms could’ve been exemplified and paralleled in a more coherent matter among the three stories. It was weird, but not where the weirdness actually added to the story, it was just there as a shock factor. The weirdness didn’t solve any loose ends. I just expected more, and all the explanations I’ve come across fall short of what could’ve been a much larger message of greed or being trapped.

When Mr. Thomas was on the floor drunk talking to mabel and the baby. Definitely the most terrifying scene I've ever watched in a cartoon/stop motion film.

I think that what the movie is trying to say is that how the obsession for things can hurt us

In part 2, the characters are supposed to represent the beetles and larvae that the main character was trying to get rid of

One gets engulfed by their materialism, the second gives up on life because of it, and the third one overcomes it not by letting go of her goals completely but by shifting her perspective on life. She already had all that she needed she just didn’t see it yet.

The first one made me cry.... Poor child.. they lost their parents to greed.. it was only when it was too late that the parents realized what has become of them :(

The first part was so French art-house, the contrast between the next two stories really highlighted the creep factor, but I want more of the first.

I enjoyed this film so much, because I felt like I could connect to each part in a different way. So much so that I don't think I could say one part was my favorite.

I can't believe Mark Heap voiced Thomas!! I must have missed his name in the credits. In regards to the 3rd story I loved it, I loved them all, but the third was for me a good way to finish it. It left me feeling pretty melancholy even though it was uplifting

I liked the sisters in the first part because through all the chaos they were still pure.

at first confused lol what kind of movie is this then the next day rewatch the 1st chapter and finished the movie. turns out it was amazing

I think the movie was ultimately about materialism and how people are attached to things at the cost of relationships and sanity. In the first one the Dad is blinded by a desire to reach a higher status so he can gain respect from awful people rather than focus on those that already respected him. When the Dad and Mom finally make it to a bigger nicer house they are transfixed by it and as a result neglect their kids and disregard their previous life. In the second one the rat is isolated restoring the house by himself deep in debt with everything riding on its sale and he doesn't realize how much it's effecting his mental health. Maybe if he reached out for help he could have been saved. In the third one the cat lady is obsessed with her dream for the house. She's so fixated on her hopes and dreams that she can't see the reality that it just won't work. It's only when she lets go of her unrealistic dream that she's able to have the freedom to venture into the unknown. She's the only one who decides to connect with those around her rather than stay focused on her obsession. I liked the third one because it looked great, I liked the design of the cat characters. The first one was the creepiest I think. I felt bad for the rat character in the second one. Sometimes I have to write something out in order to grasp it. When I finished watching it initially I wasn't sure what the moral or point was but after thinking about it I understand it more. Very well done movie overall.

There were times in " The House " that reminded me of 1988's " Alice " by Jan Svankmajer. Very surreal and spooky.

The film was a weird experience! First story was like a decent horror story. The second one was super weird and I felt sorry for the guy. Sure he was abit greedy and a con (the interior look nice but stuff like the plumbing wasn't working) and the last one was kinda meaningful with the message. Like really? Whose want to lived in that house in the middle of the sea and how is the house stayed afloat at the end?

Idk if anyone noticed but in part two every time you see outside the back of the house it looks like the Forrest from the beginning which doesn’t correlate with the front view, maybe showing his descent into madness ?

I dont think its the same house ,but in different timelines . I think its just shows how the three stories are connected by materialism (a house) . The writers just wanted that to be obvious by using the same looking kinda house. The house burned in story 1

Did anyone else notice that the baby in the first story and the crying rat baby in the second story share the same name? Thought that was interesting.

i think in part 2 the weird couple are actually his parents. their bodies resemble mabel's parents in part 1 and bringing him back home with a welcome back party made it all clear. the little bugs that infested the house were a hallucination because despite his apparent amnesia, in the back of his head he remembers his swarm of a family whom he doesnt like. probably kicked them out like he tried to get rid of the tiny bugs
