At first, I was annoyed at how little damage the regular gun does to the bosses. Now I understand the change. They did it to make the fights last longer so the player has more time to enjoy and appreciate the fights. The crossbow makes it go by quickly just like in the arcades but you need precision aiming and timing.
@@thomasalvarenga2839 The OP's comment about little damage being done is referring strictly to the remake, which is not available in arcade cabinet form. Claiming the lack of damage/length of the fight is to also ensure more quarters are spent is an incorrect inference as no quarters are necessary for this game.
My issue with the remaster is they made the zombies look oily. Some models are nice like the bosses though. The last thing that needed remastering was the music. They made the atmosphere to arcadey. I liked the old horror atmosphere
For what it's worth, despite all the shortcomings, most of the game was made almost from the ground as it was a common practice to never save assets and stuff from the games back then. So the team behind this needed to do most of them from 0 or almost 0 as it was reported on release that they didn't have access to source code, music files and such. They are planning to do updates and make again the other games but as things stand, I find it hard to pay full price since in some platforms the game is rather rough. Maybe later down the road when updates fix most issues I will be willing to pay but until then I do appreciate all the effort the team behind gave. I never thought I would see the house of the death again. Also about the enemies being oily, there is actually a little bit of lore that explains it, they are clones. That's why save the main bosses of each game, all the biological weapons aka zombies look alike and have that watery feeling. They are mass produced clones as Curian thought it was easier to create an army of clones instead of goin the resident evil route and create a virus or the likes. That's also why the people who gets killed never become zombies in the games. Maybe they could polish the texture a wee bit but at least the team was faithful to the original lore.
Visually the remake looks really good with the details they added to the settings. But audio and gameplay wise, it definitely feels a step back. If there was a happy medium between these two, this would be a perfect rail shooter
They kept the voice acting the same as that's part of the charm of the game. Similarly to old RE games. It was an untapped market and companies didn't take the voice acting very seriously, they just used it to form some sort of plot. When you look back, the terrible voice acting is extremely nostalgic for pretty much anybody playing and most would probably prefer it that way. Terrible voice acting is one of the main things it's remembered for and it wouldn't bring as many people in if they simply just remade every voice line, otherwise it'd be a shitty zombie game to most. Also, there's little dialogue compared to other games, so it won't have cost them much if they wanted to redo all the lines. They certainly kept the voice acting the same for a reason, because it wouldn't have been hard for them to remake it.
Two things: 1) Love being able to play this again since it was my first real fun shooter, I was a kid when I played it in a arcade 2) playing on mouse and keyboard took me outta it a little and I just hope they’ll release a VR version of the game in the future
Though most of the designs were improved, I feel the clarity of the game went down a little, like how the boss's color and shape sometimes blends with the background
I think the thing is the monsters were pretty much stark white in the original game, which made them easy to see and really distinctive, but also a bit bland. The pallet here makes them much more vibrant. I kinda wished they kept the Magician as stark white, since he’s practically something else.
I love that they recontextualized some animations personality-wise, but kept the original hokeyness full-stop. Magician's default idle animation went from a guarded battle stance to a completely unimpressed, ponderous gesture.
I don't think people who weren't around or into games back then appreciate how cool it was to be able to use light guns at home. Even if the game made crazy sacrifices to run on home consoles it was still really a big deal
I ran a gaming event at the bar I work at. My good friend who does sound for concerts at the bar owns a Dreamcast and has the madcat light guns…on a tube TV it feels like your playing at the arcade
I miss rail shooters. I miss them so much, I bought Drone Striker. It’s a VR game AND a rail shooter. I don’t know if it’s a PSVR exclusive or not though.
The original version has more charm into it, more visually unique and has good artistic decisions. The remake is objectively better graphically yet it feels worst.
@@TheTommyb171 People says anime is generic but there is nothing more generic than real life itself. So it is the live action and photorealism/realism.
i would say graphically the remake is obviously better but boss fights are nerfed not only the magician but hermit and hangdeman too. Also adding too much graphical detail to some zombie models made them look funny rather than creepy in original one. lets see if the developers dispatch updates to the game or it will remain same as it is launched
You do understand that the bosses were tough in the original arcade version because arcade games were designed to take your money, right? They wanted you to keep putting quarters into the machine to keep on going. So of course they nerfed the bosses for the remake. It’s a console game.
@@aguy908 Well, it was still the same game. The PC version was a port of the arcade version. This remake was developed for consoles, though. So it makes sense that the bosses are easier.
I used to play this on PC before. Agent G has the strongest fp, even for just a regular gun but is always on hard mode, thanks to only having 2 bullets per reload
Why do most of the graphics from the original look better and a bit more scary/fearsome than the stuff in the remaster ? Yea the polygon count is higher, and they move smoother, but they don't look better or more intimidating.
I played this game, but there was a similar game i played like 18 years ago, it was called "the typing of the dead" or something, same concept only difference that you need to type a sentence or a word or sometimes a letter (for projectiles or smaller enemies), this is how i learned fast typing on a keyboard. Older games had something that new games will never be able to imitate or live up to.
I like the new Magician's attitude. The way he puts his arms together in his signature pose is really cool 9 year old me thought hanged man was just a gargoyle zombie type of thing, didn't expect the new kinky look...
No one appreciates what a single stand up game can offer. This is a console dedicated to one game, the quality arcades offer is still my favorite diversion.
Man the old one will always speak to my heart but this graphics reboot is truly stunning. Well worth all the years wondering if we would ever see remakes. Can't wait for 2, if it ever comes..
I feel like the old monsters had a lot more energy in their unnatural, flaily movements in the old version compared to the new one These guys feel a little listless in an attempt[t to be more natural, and I just miss the crazy dancing that first boss used to do
I am not a fan of the Magician's redesign, it looks unintimidating and less dark, yeah sure the Emperor had a similar color pallet but it just doesn't work for the Magician. The Magicians design in House of the Dead was super basic but when he came back in House of the Dead 2 it may have looked different from the original design but it was dark enough to look pretty consistent to most if not all players who've played both games.
For me, thotd lost its characteristical japanese terror style. It's not bad, it's actually an issue about how the 90s reunited the best game developers that are now retired or not inside the industry anymore. Japan gave up its throne of gaming to United States and began stepping aside out of the business. That's the biggest loss we have to cope with. I hope this situation reverts in some way in the near future
6:00 Now hold up, I was playing the remake just a couple weeks ago and the background was definitely more sepia or warmer toned. Here it looks like nighttime... odd.
I pity anyone that played shooters with a controller. I absolutely loved my Sega Saturn for the light gun games. This one plus Virtua Cop were my favorites.
