The House of the Dead Remake - Nintendo Switch Review 

I think a bad voice acting is an essential part of House of the Dead series. I usually hate bad voice acting but in HotD series it just works on some twisted way.

The House of the Dead Remake is just pure fun. I remember i have finished The House of the Dead 2, in co op with my best friend, on the Sega Dreamcast.

I bought it this morning I love having an arcade in my living room

Finally a review I can trust. Wish they had included the original arcade version though (yes I know the source code is lost). Have the Saturn port and as fun as it is it's always been a mile off the arcade. Still not sure whether to grab this on Switch or wait for a PS4 release....

So it's April 7 and I have the game but I can't play it yet is anyone else having this issue? I can't get any information as to why it won't play even though it's the release date

Just hope this sells well enough to revitalise the genre and we get more gun games and someone brings out an actual gun controller for those games

This looks great, hopefully they will revisit Zombie Revenge, that was a fun spin off.

LOVE the AM1/2/3 look to me its ICONIC and timeless. Sadly many games of today look generic and wont age nearly as well

The only thing missing is a light gun. I remember playing the Wii one with the Wii Zapper. Good times.

As someone who has been playing it nonstop I gotta say it's the most fun I have had with a video game in a looooong time!

Someone needs to partner up with Sinden and release some light gun compilations for modern consoles.

I would have loved for this to have a classic mode with the original game as an unlockable. Still, it's great to Sega continuing to support their older franchises.

I'm hoping we will see ports of this game. Sounds like it would be great fun in VR. If I had a switch Imwould probably buy it as 25$ seems like a good deal, I like how the game looks.

I think this game needs a demo that lets you play maybe the first minute of the first chapter just to let you know if you feel comfortable with any of the control schemes.

Looks like the same engine as House of the Dead 5 arcade given the similar look. I've been waiting on HOTD5 home console port which is a graphical tour de force despite being a few years old already. Visually this remake is damn impressive but I feel like it's missing that classic Model 2 look. I like the characters models better than Model 2, but the model 2 color palette captures the b rated 1980s straight to VHS atmosphere I loved.

I'm glad this came out as well as it did, but I cannot play this without a gun. The developer hinted that they were looking into it, I pray they do.

I do hope an eventual PC release would allow for full mouse aiming, would work great with an IR gun or the Sinden.

This remake sucks, dude. The gyro aiming is horrible.

I am completely surprised there is no touch screen option for handheld mode. I basically expected it. Did they not think of it? Touch cursor, trigger fire for example?

I've still got House of the Dead 4 and 3 (and Overkill) on my PS3. I don't think Sega need to remake them, they still look comparable with contemporary games despite the aging hardware their own. I mean, I'd even go so far as to say that HOTD4 actually looks better than this remake...

I love HoTD and can't wait to get this. But Typing of The Dead is still the best .

What killed interest in this game for me, even long before it came out, was knowing that the Wii HotD games would have far better aiming thanks to the sensor bar. Gyro just isn't suited to pinpoint precision and aiming with the thumbstick in these games feels like blasphemy. lol Still, the low price tag is tempting...

Looks like an early PS3 game. I'd rather they just remastered House of the Dead 1 and 2. It's gonna be a 'meh' from me, just like the Switch as a whole.

Just finished a playthrough and the controls kill all the fun out of this title. oh well lesson learned...no more "light gun" games until there is a peripheral that works.

The bloom kinda turned me off but the game seems fine overall

Looks fairly solid. Some of the bloom or other lighting looked a bit overblown at some parts (like around 11:20 with that lit up hallway)making it hard to see what was going on, but if I can get some buddies over to play I feel you can't really go wrong. I think it’s cool that the new developers upgraded the visuals for today’s gaming audience but I do prefer the O.G. graphical style. It might be a nostalgia thing for me but there was a certain charm to those early HOUSE OF THE DEAD titles.

The fact that they added achievements gives me hope for a Xbox/PlayStation release. Imagine this game with PlayStation VR 2. 🤔

HotD 2 was one of my fav games on the Dreamcast. I played some of the Wii releases, but they never really clicked with me. I'd love to get this, but not having a gun gives me pause, especially for $25. If it ever goes on sale I might grab it then.

Not retaining Wiimote support on Switch is one of the most infuriating things Nintendo has done for me...

Time crisis on switch namco

For $25, It's a bargain. But unlike Sonic Mania, this is a pass. The visuals and performances are just...AWFUL. It's a reminder on how the Nintendo Switch at times cant handle the horsepower to run modern games. Was J.J. Abrhams apart of this remake because from this video I see nothing but lens FLARE. Oversaturated colors and the diminished tone from the am2 counterpart is what drives me away from this. So yeah...bummer!

More like a poor remastered, it's an insult to call this shit show a remake.

I've been looking forward to this remake for a while. My only question is why doesn't the game feature the SEGA logo on it? It's the same thing with "Panzer Dragoon Remake", and it just feels weird to me. I mean, these are SEGA games after all. They should start up with the SEGA logo.

this is an opinion from a person that prefers original arcade way more than the remake just from the looks; essentially the scary part of the hotd is deleted from remake because it's so goddamn bright (PC version still has the same problem) model 2 if I remember correctly doesn't have proper lighting like ps1 so they had to do something with the environment, which I think works super well and makes it dark and scary. there are also some early polygonal game effects that I really love from hotd (like when object had impacted, circular polygonal thing spawned simulate the dust kind of) which ofc not exist in here because of tech and age, but i really miss those. with that, the blood splash feels very cheap and it looks more like ketchup which in my opinion distracts me more than ever; original has different blood splash and i think it's gory but not distracting and the UI and more general font looks unnecessarily cheap because of how it looks. original is good enough, so why did they try to remake that too in different direction? tldr; original has very distinct, dark, and cleaner look compared to remake. overall id say it's kind of worth it if you don't mind with how it looks and sounds. it is ofcourse has different feeling with original since it's a remake with different engine, but they at least tried to preserve some details and mechanics and they added new mode to spice things up which are imo the only pros of the remake. i was skeptic when i watched the trailer of it, and too bad my skepticism got answered poorly in many places, including musics (which is kind of bad that they can't somehow use the original/home arrangement musics) and graphic. can't say I'm looking forward to hotd2 remake, but if it's for reintroducing the series, that's ok i guess...

I want a DLC skin that makes the game look like the old style so I can switch back and forth. Looking forward to playing this and hopefully they so HotD2 next! Suffer like G did? Hell yeah!

Thanks for the review. I am going to get the game as soon the ps4 version is released. I have owned a Nintendo console since the gamecube so I have to wait. The game looks really promising for me. Cannot wait to play it.

Magician boss is slow and not frenetic like the original, and the original music is completely absent. No deal.

Knowing that the controls could make or break this, I think it'd be a good idea to make an actual arcade version of this so we can get a feel for how it plays with an actual gun. (It feels really surprising they made no touch-screen-control-based option, incidentally.)

15:00 Sonic, Streets of Rage, Panzer Dragoon, and now this are good starts. Hopefully they can look at their rpgs like skies of Arcadia and Phantasy Star

You really cannot trust the views of the majority of the modern gaming websites for games like this (most of them were toddlers when this game originally came out). I have this game downloaded and ready to go, can't wait to get stuck in!

There are over 10 million oculus quest 2 out tgere. Can we get vr ports of all of them pmease?

Not having a 3rd party light gun is a deal breaker for me and would ruin the experience because it makes it a totally different experience and removes the nostalgia. The graphics look great and true to the style. Great review!

The graphics and gore effects are weak

Got this game. But seriously I am disappointed with the gyro. In fact the aiming felt better on wii. Hope they come out with additional accessories or tech to make the aim feels better instead of using gyro.

I'm waiting for the PC port (In case it gets ported), not just to use a light gun through mouse emulation, but also for the soundtrack mods.

Not worth buying since it’s not house of the dead 5 I see no reason to want to buy this it’s an old game but sure isn’t classic enough without the guns Sega has lost their mind choosing the first house of the dead

I hope they can patch some of these technical issues. And also fix (or give the option to turn off/down) the "reload" voice because that's gonna get damn annoying.

Not having the origional music means it is a pass from me, that was 50% of the game IMO.

The boss fight at 7:00 is accurate to what I've experienced when trying to aim using gyro controls. It's literally the only thing stopping me from continuing the game. Rail shooters are my favorite arcade experiences but the controls are dwindling me down.

Guessing the controls suck but I'm really hoping not! Edit: Looks like I was right, that's a huge shame. I wonder if the best experience of this game will be on PC with a Switch emulator and the Sinden light gun.

I still have Overkill and the 2&3 port on the Wii and they make for an awesome party game. Question: how does the gyroscopic aiming holds up against the wiimote (which is perfect) ? And, can you have two players with just the original two joycons ?

With all the advancements in performance hardware over the past few years Nintendo really needs to make a powerful system, the past 3 systems always fell behind the competition in specs and performance, I don't understand why such a wealthy company plays it safe with hardware

Heck - I'd like this to have touch controls like the old iOS version of HOTD Overkill. Now THAT was a fun game.

Like Panzer Dragoon Remake ill buy this one again double. First for switch, cause i cant wait. Second for Series X. Cause it looks a lot better and have this nice 4K and 120FPS boost. And dont gorget Quick Resume AND Archivments. Its very sad, SEGA Remasters there games for the oldest and weakest console.

I'm really impressed by how much content they manage to cram into this. It's not the easiest task to make a light gun game with content, yet I feel they pulled it off pretty decently.

Come on Sega, do VR ports of your lightgun games.

The gyroscope drift and having to press start after almost every gun fight to re-calibrate kills the enjoyment for me

The game looks great, but without the gun I just feel that it’s not going to be as immersive. Sure you can use your joycon... it’s not the same, I also don’t feel this would work well on my projector. Often things like that don’t work well on such a large screen.

I seldom pre order games but I pre ordered this bad boy in a heartbeat. Can't wait to play it. I pumped an unholy amount of my old paper round earnings into this thing back as a teenager lol

I dont mind the voice acting, and I can get past the gyro controls. But the changes to soundtrack are unforgivable. I dont know if its this way for anyone else, but for me, one of the main appeals to hotd is the top tier soundtrack that shows up in each of the games; here, the entire ost sounds like a bootleg version of the original. I was strongly considering purchasing this until I heard a couple of snippets of the soundtrack, after which I was a bit hesitant; then, I saw that someone uploaded a video of the magician's ingame theme and I decided I would not be buying the game. They managed to mess up one of the most iconic soundtracks in the entire series, and it killed all interest I had in the game.

I don't know what's with the trend in these remakes of putting in a worse soundtrack and not giving the option to use the original music, but it's infuriating. Square-Enix has been doing it too and it puts a bad taste in my mouth for anything being remade these days. Combined with no proper third-party light gun (the Joycon will never be a replacement) and awful bloom everywhere, and I'm leaning towards sticking with the PC version or saving up for a Sinden light gun to play the arcade original.

God I remember playing Jurassic Park at my local Chuck n Chesses back in the mid 90s. The cabinet was very unique where you sit on a bench style seat and the seat vibrated when you shot or got hit.

Perhaps you'll know this better than anyone? In the 90's I was on holiday in France and happened to walk into an arcade along the seafront, of where we were. In there was a machine I'd never seen before, or since and was a Sega arcade game (which is why I think you'll know?) It was a holographic arcade game, with a glass domb appearance and featured a cowboy that you controlled the crosshair for and shot bandits. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, which made it impossible to explain to people. I don't suppose you would happen to know at all?

I wasn't even expecting SEGA to revisit the original, quite an upgrade visually and it's nice they were faithful to the original. If only Square Enix had the same guts when bringing Chrono Cross and others, the same happened to the Monster Rancher games, instead of lame remasters, remakes like HotD and Panzer Dragoon shine and rise above. People do notice hard work.

won't lie, this game looks horrible, i didn't even like how the overkill game looked, but this is on a whole new level of bad looking game. add the many shortcomings, the fact that u don't have a light gun and instead using gyro....and it is a hard pass for me unless i find it on a sale for $10 and even then it would be a hard sale. Hope in part 2 they fix all that is wrong, shame to see one of the best arcade franchise being treated this way.

Switch really desperately needs the pro or switch 2 version. Can't even run shitty games at 60fps. This generation 60fps is everything.
