Episode Notes:
1. Saturn footage from real hardware. Arcade footage from Nebula Model 2 emulator.
2. There is a lightgun in the works for the PC that allows you to use it on LCD monitors(or any other type of tech) called the Sinden. It's expensive but could be the answer for those of you looking for that authentic feel.
3. The arcade footage you are seeing is running at 640x480 but can run much higher with AA.
4. I have long fought the desire to own this arcade machine in my home. It's big and shaped funny, so the footprint is simply unwieldly. They are usually around $1000 or so in good working condition.
5. Getting the real ending to The House of the Dead is no easy thing. There are 3 endings and only the bad one is easy to get.

There was also “typing of the dead” which replaced shooting with typing out words as fast as you can to improve your wpm. I used to play that one a lot.

i ended up playing that more since modern lcds became more and more the norm and lightguns just didnt work on them, but its still great it didnt improve my typing much though.

So it's someone who's eventually going to cover all of these there's actually three of them what you probably played was the first Typing of Dead which is based after the House of the Dead 2 game it's two sequels was they had one that was based after House that Dead Three and the last one was based after the spin-off House of the Dead Overkill. There's also English of the Dead which I implore you to look up on RU-vid because it's hilarious and technically impressive.

The model 2 had a certain aesthetic charm that subsequent arcade boards lacked. I'd argue that the games released for it were Sega's zenith

Saturn HOTD was my jam! It wasn't anywhere near the arcade in its visuals, but the gameplay was still there, and if you had a Stunner light gun, too... Man, it was the envy of my friends when it came to that particular genre. Almost every time they came over for a good year or two, a round of HOTD was a given.

I absolutely loved playing THOTD as well as Virtual Cop when I was a kid! This is so nostalgic to see and can't wait to see what the re-make has to offer :D

I had this on PC. My wife and I have a tradition of playing the cabinet at the cinema we usually go to before every movie. Hope that cabinet is still there!

I always like how this game had zombies in the background just wandering around. I always did my best to try and shoot them all. This is one of my favorite arcade games of all time. Its an arcade classic.

Unfortunately the reason HotD1 was never re-released is because Sega lost the code for the game, so there’s no possible way to bring it back in its original form.

I dont know if sega lord x will see this comment, but the main reason why the house of the dead never got ported to any consoles like wii or ps3 is due to the fact that sega lost the source code the game. The funny thing is that people in sega tried to remake THOTD 2 times for the sega model two ( there is a video where a youtuber has that prototype but he will not released but from what I see they only had about 1/2 of the game finish before they canned it, but you could see it in the intro of the house of the dead 2) and during the xbox 360 era but never got past the pitch.

I loved Lightgun games! You need to try VR! VR shooters are like the natural evolution of the arcade light gun, except you are actually in the game and have to physically dodge bullets and take cover, sooo good man!

The remake doesn't look appealing at all. Maybe it's just because I dislike change, but the updated visuals remove a lot of the charm and make it nearly identical to every other zombie game out there.

Probably my favorite zombie game, even more than Resident evil. I finished HOD 1, 2, 3 and 4 at arcades with one credit, I hope Sega ports the last entry of the franchise (Crimson Dawn) to Steam and continues the story and lore, there are still a lot of unsolved plots.

Live in a tourist city and on one of the main strips there were three different arcade style places, but from these three places you could play all four House of the Dead arcade games and this has been accurate up till about a year or two ago, due to current situations I have no idea if they are still there or even open but it was just so much fun taking a day and playing each game in order for the day.

One frustrating aspect of the Saturn version is that the guns all seem to be on the way out. I have two Virtua Guns and both of them fail to register shots intermittently. :(

The only (partly) working Saturn emulator I could find was SSF. It's an incredibly complicated program and doesn't always load up the games. Sometimes it woks, sometimes it doesn't, but there's no option to up the resolution of the games. If you were able to increase the resolution how did you do it...?

Great video. Love the House of the Dead series, and even though the Saturn port wasn't great, I played it a ton and still loved it! House of the Dead 4 on PS3 w/Move and SharpShooter attachment is pretty awesome too! Really a shame they didn't put Light Gun games on the Wii U. Loved the Sega games on the Wii (House of the Dead 2/3, Ghost Squad, LA Machineguns/NY Gunblade). The Wii U would've been perfect for some HD light gun shooters as well! (really need an HD version of LA Machineguns/NY Gunblade). The Jurassic Park Arcade game, House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn, Luigi's Mansion Arcade, Terminator Salvation Arcade, Let's Go Jungle would be so awesome to have home ports of. Would've been great on Wii U (and possibly PS3 w/Move, but Wiimote Plus and sensor bar seemed better for these type of games). I'm not sure the Joycons will work out as well without a sensor bar as reference, but I'm still hoping for the best. Looking forward to House of the Dead on Switch. Hoping it will make way for more light gun shooters to come to home consoles in the future. Heck, we still need updates of Virtua Cop 1&2, and need a port of 3!

I lost most of my $1 & $2 coins and converted bank notes for change at my local Timezone / Playtime etc on HOTD, HOTD2 and Namco's Time Crisis 2 & SNK's Beast Busters. My only gripe even for the high volume arcades was the lack of upkeepand disrepair/ callibration of the light guns and the trigger etc. Really got on my tits when I'd pump $5 or $6 into a machine and be immediately at a major disadvantage. HOTD sucked my coinage dry even when "fair" though $1 in a Time Crisis 2 cabinet would often lete play through the entire game and waste enough time on cheap fun until the train was due or Games Workshop shift change for the arvo happened.

Sort of an aside, but THIS type of game is what Robocop should have been. Unfortunately, at the time, sidescrolling run n guns and beat'em ups were more in fashion. But the way Robocop moved ... slowly and deliberately ... it just wasn't a good fit for run n gun. Robocop should have been a first person gun game ... like Virtua Cop but more violent like THotD and with that Robocop humor.

So if they're doing an updated version for the Switch, what are they gonna do about the guns.. ya know? Because no matter how great it looks and runs: without an actual gun, and having to resort to a d-pad or joystick.. well, that kinda defeats the whole point in making it I feel like. That would be like remaking NiGHTS for the Game Boy Advance.. (or just playing it without the 3D controller on Saturn) Without an analog stick, you'd lose half the point of it

My friend and I dropped so many quarters into this game back in the day in the arcade. When I finally had a chance to buy it on Saturn, I also had the option to pick up Burning Rangers. I went with Burning Rangers instead and picked up House of the Dead for the PC. (This was probably 2000?) Glad that I did, but I would still like to pick up a copy of House of the Dead for Saturn some day to play with the light gun again.. I have a CRT TV in the basement that I could hook it up to.

Hey Segalord X, can you also do a review the Dreamcast game San Francisco Rush 2049?? I think that game is great, but a bit misunderstood. Personally I think its one of most interesting racing games on the console. I keep coming back to this game to improve the, quite hard to perform, shortcuts. Those shortcuts are quite genius I think. Would like to know your views on it.

Saturn version was such a disappointment. I imported it from Japan on day one back in 98 expecting a Virtua Cop type conversion, nothing could prepare me for the crappiest textures on Saturn and how unfinished it felt. You could tell Sega had just given up. Game still played well though, but at the time the appeal of HOTD was the graphics.

I use a dolphin bar when I emulate this on PC to use my wiimotes. Not as good as a real lightgun but way more fun then a mouse. Also can work for the Overkill PC port (Included with Typing of the Dead Overkill).

Man, they sure should've ported this to PS2. All the things I like about Vampire Nights is here and I think PS2 would've been a better home for the game than Saturn. As much as I love Saturn, I don't think it could've lived up to what the Arcade version seems to have provided :/
