We can now view the real faces of the first Tudor monarchs. The one who established the dynasty on the throne of England, Henry Tudor, a descendant of the Lancastrian branch of the House of Plantagenet, who was later known as king Henry VII his wife Elizabeth of York and two of their sons Prince Arthur and the face of a young, thin and athletic, Henry VIII.

It's truly fascinating. Strange to see Henry as a young man and quite handsome, instead of the huge, overweight figure he became. I think that of all his wives, Henry was most compatible with Catherine of Aragon. How different English history would have been if Catherine had given birth to a male heir which survived.

That infection after first stillbirth, had truly ruined everything for them. They'd probably have lots of healthy kids otherwise.
@susangavaghan
@susangavaghan 2 года назад
@@maearcher4721 I wasn't aware of that. I always thought it strange that Catherine had problems with producing healthy children. How ironic it is that her sister Joanna, who was not of sound mind, produced a large number of children, while Catherine, who was an emotionally stable and highly intelligent problem, was unable to produce a healthy male heir. Then again, Anne Boleyn had the same problem and even though Jane Seymour did finally manage to produce the long awaited male heir, he died at a young age.

@@susangavaghan All the matters you spoke about are more complicated. I'll try to explain. Juana was not completely crazy. She was emotionally not so well always when relatives of her died or when she was pregnant or when her husband's mistress was involved. (the proven cases of her unstable behaviour) But i think she didn't even need to be seriously mentally ill. For example emotional rollercoster women with ADHD experience would be enough-and ADHD is no mental illness. Juana was also highly intelligent and well educated-but the emotional instability impared it and she was certainly not a strong personality that Catherine was. I am not sure if Juana was capable of ruling, but i don't think Juana needed to be locked up. It's weird that even some documentaries didn't pick upon that infection-and instead claim it was phantom pregnancy-which usually happens when women are desperate for baby. Catherine lost just 1 baby, she was young-there was no reason for her to be desperate yet. Something was very wrong for her to be 'bigger than any other pregnant woman'. It's surprising she could even deliver living baby afterwards, because some women would be barren for life. Imo, Catherine had hard time deliver baby full term, afterwards and obviously babies weren't as well supplied as they should. Otherwise more babies born at beginning of 3rd trimester would make it and Mary wouldn't be so tiny. Well, Anne's issues imo were bit different. She delivered first baby alright, but lost 2 other babies. So she could have that condition when it is ok to deliver first baby, but nowadays you have to get injection of something to have healthy 2nd baby. I think that was Rh something. Anne could also have some damage from 1st miscarriage, but tbh she wasn't married for long. Isabella of Castile had 1 daughter, then 7 years no living child, and then rest of her children. Anne might have had no big issue except Henry's impatient nature. 3 Tudor males died in their teens-Edward IV, Arthur Tudor and Henry Fitzroy. Perhaps their imune system wasn't that good at that age.

@@maearcher4721 Regarding Joanna's mental health, I got the following from Wikipedia: As a young woman, Joanna was known to be highly intelligent. Claims regarding her as "mad" are widely disputed.[24] It was only after her marriage that the first suspicions of mental illness arose. Some historians believe she may have suffered from melancholia, a depressive disorder, a psychosis, or a case of inherited schizophrenia.[25]: 9  She may also have been unjustly painted as "mad" as her husband Philip the Handsome and her father, Ferdinand, had a lot to gain from Joanna being declared sick or incompetent to rule.[26] The narrative of her purported mental illness is perpetuated in stories of the mental illness of her maternal grandmother, Isabella of Portugal, Queen of Castile, in widowhood exiled by her stepson to the castle of Arévalo in Ávila, Castile.[25]: 12 . I agree there may have been more to these claims than meets the eye. There were reports that she kept her husband's body with her after his death.
@maearcher4721
@maearcher4721 2 года назад
@@susangavaghan I think her parents and her husband were all unsympathetic and not understanding to whatever issue she had. And that can seriously set you back if youre trying to battle emotional instability. And yep, her husband and her dad both had lot to gain from declaring her mad and Philip forged her signiture on document which said she declared him her co-ruler. It is proven-so certainly he was shady and I know from other event that Ferdinand himself was dishonourable man and that personal gain was for him way more than any relative or any of his daughters. So I wouldn't put it pass either man to label her as mad(using previous mental illness as explanation why she suddenly got mad) and to even psychologically be abusive, to try to push her over the edge. Though i believe rumours of Juana's physical torture is without historical evidence. As for Juana supposedly opening her husband's coffin and wanting to be near him. I get wanting to be nearing-some people simply love others so much, they want to visit the grave often etc. But there is no credible source from that time about the coffin opening and kissing of the corpse, so I think that might have been false. At those days if you wanted to discredit somebody you used the very worst, the nastiest rumours to do it. Popes were often accused of being homosexuals for example(which for clergyman was way wore stand just having female mistress), women of being nymphomanics or mad(or hysterical, simple-minded, etc. Necromancy falls perfectly into the category-of really nasty rumours.

Elizabeth of York and Henry VII’s marriage is one of the greatest love stories in British royal history. Brought together by an alliance between their scheming, ambitious mothers, who hated each other, during one of the longest and bloodiest civil wars in history. Henry VII was literally the last Lancastrian royal standing. It became a marriage based on mutual respect and a deep love for each other. A rare and beautiful thing in marriage not entered into under such duress and trying circumstances!

What? Henry VIII _was_ handsome as a young guy! I appreciate your bringing these to life, as the style of painting in his and Arthur’s portraits makes it really hard to picture. I always thought some of these Royal paintings were partly caricatures, but showing us how they can develop into realistic human faces without changing any of the proportions is pretty amazing. If you ever get a chance to do Mary, Queen of Scotts’ mom Mary of Guise, I would love to see it. She was almost six feet tall, reportedly beautiful, and turned down Henry ViII’s proposal after the first three marriages failed. She married King James of Scotland and had Mary, while he died, leaving her Regent of Scotland until her daughter became an adult, But I love them all! Thank you!

@@ApacheMagic To talk about death in childbirth when referring to a fifteenth/sixteenth century queen is presentism, which I tend not to like. The purpose of a royal marriage was to perpetuate the dynasty and the foremost duty of a queen was to produce male heirs, so by that measure, the most important one when speaking of the marriage of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, it was a successful marriage. But in addition, all available evidence indicates that Henry and Elizabeth grew to really love each other, despite the fact that theirs was a marriage arranged for political purposes, and that they had never met at the time they were betrothed. So by that measure as well, the one more pleasing to modern minds, it was a successful marriage.

Realpolitik would have driven him to exterminate any Yorkists via Margaret Pole just as his megalomaniacal narcissist of a brother did. I read somewhere that so horrified was Elizabeth I by the thought that Lady Margaret Pole's descendant, the Earl of Huntingdon, could become king, that she roused herself from her supposed death bed. The Tudors were ever fearful of those with better claims, be they York or Lancaster. Look what Henry VIII did to his first wife Katherine of Aragon and their daughter Mary, both with infinitely stronger Lancastrian claims than Henry VIII possessed.

This is very cool. It’s so great to see these people actually look like real people rather than the images ingrained in our heads from the way portraits and sculptures were styled back then. Everyone was given weird puffy eyes 😂. What would also be cool is to take contemporary figures, like say, Prince William, and reverse the portrait from today’s photos to the painting styles of the 1500’s to see how those paintings came close to their likeness yet also shows how different they were.

We should stop to consider whether or not there are known portraits of an historical figure before we ask that he or she be included. I'm sure we all want to believe that these "real faces" are accurate, and to be accurate, they must be based upon a portrait. As in the case of Katherine Swynford, there is no known portrait of Jacquetta of Luxembourg, so it wouldn't be possible to do a "real faces" for her.

Please consider all the Plantagenets including Katherine Sywnford who became John, Duke of Lancasters last wife. She was so important in English history even though she was a commoner. All of the Beauforts descended through her after they were legitimized.
@jn8ive60
@jn8ive60 2 года назад
There is no known, absolutely certain portrait of Katherine Swynford, so it wouldn't really be possible to do a "real face" on her. There are two blonde women, both dressed in blue, in the foreground of the frontispiece of "Troilus and Cressida", which was painted sometime between 1400 and 1415. The frontispiece depicts Geoffrey Chaucer, the author, reading to John of Gaunt and a crowd of other people. The two blonde women dressed in blue are kneeling directly in front of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. For this reason, it has been speculated that they are Katherine Swynford and Joan Beaufort, her daughter by John of Gaunt. However, this is speculation. They may or may not be. Writers have even differed as to which one is Katherine and which one is Joan, if indeed that's who they are. In addition, their figures are small and not in as much detail as the portraits which are used for "real faces". Even so, it's obvious that the woman on the right must have been very attractive. She has blonde hair, large breasts, and a small waist, so could be Katherine whose beauty was legendary, but again we just can't know.

Brilliant! May I just suggest to make long hair to Elizabeth and generally to all women... in that age (but I would say since antiquity) it was unconceivable for a woman to have short hair, unless she was a nun or suffered from certain illnesses. The short hair started to be used last century and at the beginning was considered a sign of emancipation and therefore condemned by the majority of people in Western world. A woman with short hair lost her saxy appeal. Cutting a woman's hair short was a way to degrade her. Long hair had to be kept tied up or in braid for cleanness, or covered both for cold protection and as a sign the woman was married. A woman with long loose hair was to be seen only in bed chamber by his husband. No woman was portraid with loose hair, except prostitutes or bathing woman (e.g. Magdalene, Susanne, Betsabea etc). I've always imagined the Tudor rule over England was a long overdue payback/vengeance of the Welsh against the English/Normans. The Dark Age Welsh/Britons have been screwed over terribly, and had land taken from them by the Anglo-Saxons (English) and later Normans. But now, some 800-900 years later, a Welsh Dynasty rules supreme over Britain (excluding Scotland), as if the Anglo-Saxon domination has finally been undone. This is what I feel, when thinking about the Tudors. If only Prince Arthur had become king...
@lufe8773
@lufe8773 Год назад
Think again! when the Welsh were being subjugated by the Normans so were the Anglo Saxons who by the way had integrated with the local 'British' so you could say they were really the same people. The Normans also tried to conquer Ireland and established a ruling hierarchy there too. So to think in terms of Nationality in those days is mistaken.
@AbuLaith1963
@AbuLaith1963 Год назад
According to current research there was no wholesale replacement of the Britons across England by the Anglo-Saxons. There was only the adoption by them of a language and culture more akin to their needs. Frankly, I am not sure how tenable this theory is. Certainly, the Tudors were no great representatives of Welsh civilisation.
