@@Onxy1976hardly squashed. He nagged him he whined and cried to make sure his listeners would be convinced that he isnt a poser but everyone knows he was always has been an insecure nerd.
Gary asks Howard what he listened to at NBC and Howard replies "whatever was current"... literally proving Gary's entire point hahaha. Howard straight up defines his own taste as trendy lmao
Even worse is the way that back stabbing weasel Robin always barnicle’s onto whatever Howard is saying and shits on everyone under the guise that its Howard and not her. And Gary is dead on especially considering in hind sight the band came to nothing he owed Jackie 200 bucks.
The most honest episode of this show ever. Howard likes what he determines OTHERS like. Just like in Howard last book he admits that "the culture had changed and if I didnt then I would be irrelevant". Thats says it all
Non sequitur. Of course he has to change with the times. His fucking job depends on it. If he became irrelevant, he'd be out of a job. Everybody changes over time. If you don't, you're a damn fool.
There are also old shows where Howch ragged on people like Gange for having a Twitter profile; later in the years Howie's throwing emergency meetings telling his staffers to swarm Twitter.
@@socillizt4life anything else to add, genius? IF you're not changing or evolving you're getting left behind. How many more episodes do you want to see them throw bologna on some brain dead womans butt? Do I want to see the talentless "Friends" girls? No. Do I cringe when he talks about the bachelor every Tuesday? Yes. Then I listen to something else. But that show still can be incredibly funny most of the time. Gary is the missing link and better be down on his knees every night he got hired by Howard.
Howard chose to dismiss Gary's recollections of the 1984 Letterman appearance. Howard had shorter hair, a regular collard short-sleeve shirt and cheesy mustache! He developed his rock n' roll persona in the late '80s.
@@drewgeraci8434 there was an episode where artie cracked on howard about one of his letterman appearances wearing leather spandex type pants and cowbow boots. even howard agreed with artie
Howard is such a baby. He says "a poser wouldnt listen to music they didnt like alone in their free time" no, thats exactly what they would do. They are so sensitive and desperate to be cool or liked so they force themselves to listen to terrible "edgy" music to fit in with others later or to tell others what they listen to. Thats what most teenagers do when they want to fit in.
It is absolutely insane that Howard is surprised to hear that he is a nerd. He is such a nerd. He loves dawsons creek and buffy the vampire slayer. He is such a poser
This is in my top 5 favorite bits from the show, and it never gets old. 1995 - 1997 were the golden years. I loved the Artie period, but this era was comfy
It’s because he thinks he should like those old acts or he wasn’t manly. Same reason why he claims his favorite movie is Godfather which is bs, we all know he likes Friends/Smallville/Dancing With the Stars/ Marvel entertainment
There's a channel that uploads all the drama type or howard bashing episodes but they're only audio so I listen to them at work. The bro fight and arties last time I'm the studio are on there.
At 6:45 when Gary says…“Boy,everybody knows how to say it real quick”…..then the following reaction says everything.Jackie,Fred & Robin agreed in full with Gary but they’re all too sycophantic with Howard to back Gary up,except Jackie that is.
Howard couldn't name a single band from the 80s at around 12 minute mark. But being so upset proves Gary's point. Howard totally revealed everything in his arguments.
Hilarious. Gary is spot on about Howard and it is obvious everyone in there agrees with him. Howard knows EXACTLY what Gary is referring to and he knows Gary busted him.
That is how it came across to me. The fact he got so defensive implies it was a direct hit. You know he was looking for the most cutting edge CDs and bringing them home to learn about it. I did the same thing but I was 19 at the time
This clip is fucking great. Gary accidently says something that cut so deep on Howard. You could tell Howard was fucking livid, calling him "fatso" hahaha You can see Gary realize he just stepped on a landmine mid saying it too. He sure did open a can of worms on that one, holy shit. Robin and Jackey chime in too at first then realize it's a sensitive subject and start backing up Howard hahaha
For the record, Steely Dan is one of the greats. Shows how much Hollywood Howie knew. He got Ralph shopping for him at Hot Topic every other week. That’s okay when you are a teenager but Howie was a bit older. It’s like that NOFX song, forgot the name, but there’s a line that goes something like “mom and dad, I think you ought…to quit smoking so much pot. And hanging with my friends. Laying round, on the couch…with my Misfits records out…slowly banging your head. Maybe it’s just a passing phase, what’s the matter with our parents these days?”
This was the peak of the show. Howard was on top of his game in these days. When you listen to his show now, it’s pretty sad. He’s an old man and slipping now..
Agreed. Howard is really really bad radio now. But back in the 90's he was the best. Head on a swivel and could go off at any moment in the funniest way. Unreal how far he has fallen.
Gary is right. Howard had an image to portray to his fans as a long haired heavy metal, cutting edge Shock Jock. He could never admit he liked Sinatra, Streisand, etc... And i question Howard listening to heavy metal at his home when he's alone. Maybe for the show to pick or discuss and enhance his knowledge of that genre so he doesnt look like a complete goof if someone asks. Howard is a well thought out person and he spends time on his craft
It’s funny how Howard says he listens to mainly heavy metal, but nowadays, he completely shits all over metal bands, except Metallica. I would definitely call him a poser.
Technically Steely Dan is proficient as hell .. on par with a lot of those Jazz Fusion musicians , but that stuff is basically elevator music to my ears. It's hokey as hell and sedated .. total cheese for old people. I don't know if Rob Zombie is what I'd consider 'a genius' .. but I'd rather listen to White Zombie than Steely Dan any day. 🤮
Steely Dan is amazing. You can like any Genre of Music without hating the other. These pre-conditioned rules make no sense. From Classical to Death Metal, you've got Geniuses in each field if you keep looking
@@luckylock4191 Who's 'hating'? ... Steely Dan is too mediocre to hate ... It just kind of lays there. There's plenty of music on The Weather Channel that is technically 'amazing' , but I don't wanna listen to it. Different strokes bruh. .... " pre-conditioned rules" or maybe they just don't like the flavor .. People can not like certain music if it doesn't move them... and it's not about genre for me. I listen to everything ... If I want something good with that rock fusion sound, I'll go for King Crimson, Yes, Supertramp, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Gong or something in that arena ..... Steely Dan is just AM radio Dad Rock .. It's boring no matter how technically gifted and knowledgeable those guys are.
Because the show was more important than anyone... Howard had a really nasty habit of "moving the goal post" to suit his narrative, to make him appear right, every time someone was making a good case about anything he would argue about. It was especially easy to do it with Gary because he knew Gary would eventually back off, so as not to rock their boat. Gary knew his place on that show. Howard took complete advantage of it, any chance he got, with anyone he had under his thumb. When you're the king... you can do no wrong.
31:38 Jeez, Ralph's hair. What the hell look was he going for here? Grunge boy? Surfer twink? To whoever dyed Ralph's hair blond - thanks for the years of laughter you've given to the world.
You could tell this hit too close to home with Howard. Howard was a poser. He never lived the life he tried to portray on air. He still doesn't. He is posing. Gary was right.
I think baba booey is right on here, you can tell everyone in the room agrees lol even though Robin still acts like she disagrees she shuts up for most part
So funny how bent howard gets when he called him fake. Howard invests so much into his image that when called out, he realizes other people can see hes fake not just gary
Omg, at about 32 min in, in the back w Ralph, SJ and Gary arguing, you can see and hear Grillo on the phone ordering Howard lunch and saying, "no f-ing butter, no oil or any of that shit in it." Hahaha No wonder they kept getting it wrong.
This is fantastic Where's the video of Gary playing the trumpet? It's awesome that Gary turned out to be better looking than everyone there He's looking sharp for his age real nice for him He's a good dude
Funny…now he says that this isn’t who he is and to forget all the weird, over the top, mean things he did…..Seems Gary was right all along, he’s phony.
Gary is right. Howard just wants to look in touch because hes on the radio. They gloss over the fact that he wants to be a trend setter. BTW that band never went anywhere, so Howard was wrong again. Gary was also right that Howard looked like a giant nerd when he was at NBC and then hit a mid life crisis and tried to look like Ralph and change his whole look to look "younger".
Steely Dan has some of the greatest musical artists in history that have played on their albums, or anybody's albums. I guess Howard Stern doesn't know good music.
When Howard was pointing out how far Gary's teeth go out bullying him, Gary should have mentioned how far Howard's witch nose comes out but i guess maybe he knew Howard can't take any comments about his looks and he would've freaked out.
23:10. *The Greenwich Ape: "I don't have to **_be_** like anybody else!"* *Quivers-A-Lie: "No, **_you_** have to be like **_everybody_** else." (She nailed it.)*
33:40 I love this segment in the backroom with John and Gary completely dismantling Ralph's claim that he liked Pearl Jam and other grunge bands before they did, "they only liked it once it got popular" without Howard and the rest of the room backing him up he is left defenceless and he admits he started liking Grunge once it was popular, like most other people did, only he clutches at straws trying to say he heard it slightly before them not on the the radio or Z 100 34:59 Gary's rebuttal is so great, he states the exact way this kind of 'I heard it first culture' works in those 'cutting edge' people's minds. You need only look at Ralph in this video to see he was clearly a trend hopper, the dyed blonde hair and flannel shirt he couldn't be trying to scream 'I'm really into grunge' any harder unless he actually had it written on his forehead. Despite the way Gary and John were often poked fun at and presented as stooges on the show they had a much more mature and rational way of thinking about music taste than Howard and his cronies 36:19
Can you imagine Howard listening to heavy metal in the basement? Never happened. Just as silly was Robin talking about AC DC as being the hot eighties band.
You can see Gary retreat when Howard starts calling him names..than he is in a hole and trying to dig his way out!! U can see his discomfort when he disagrees with Howard....
At this point, Gary has already been abused by Howard for years. That look he has is fear. He is genuinely scared Howard is going to hurt his feelings when he comes back at him.
i think the poster behind Gary says it all. Howard even had his nose look different on the private parts poster, to look a certain way. His nose is obviously 3 time that size
There's video of Howard a lot younger than he is here ,where his nose doesn't look big at all but around this time it looked massive, hows that possible? He looks drastically different through the years, nose, hair, his voice, even his personality changed a lot... Maybe there are 2/3 Howard Sterns like some big stars are rumoured to have ! Clones😂
I always remember this clip when I hear years later at Sirius the segment where Howard says he loves steely Dan but doesn’t want to interview them even though they are a great band. Lmao Gary was sooooooo right here
gary was right on the mark. just look at howard's friends now. howard only wants a list celebrities on the show and only wants to associate with the jimmy kimmels of the world. his views are totally liberal now, too.
I love how they basically just had a huge hipster fight. "You never even listened to them until they became popular." Scott the Engineer is usually a moron but he hit the nail on the head when they were arguing in the office. "You guys love bands until they become popular and then you immediately drop them". Total hipster energy lol
@@optimisticcosmic - I'm a Korean woman who used to work w/an organization that dealt with tv, film, & radio broadcasting. I've heard enough from famous producers/directors, & believe me, it's comedy mostly.
@@Time_to_Stop_Animal_Cruelty Some things are a bit. Not everything. Gary calling Howard a poser makes Howard look bad because it was kind of true. Don't think it was a bit.
From 20 min and after, my attention was looking at the poster behind Gary and me thinking, "why does Howard look like Sigourney Weaver", and wondering if it was intent or accidental. And then thinking .......
If Howard was 30 years younger in this clip, he’d be the guy who goes to Hot Topic and buys all the metal/punk t shirts and doesn’t know a thing about them but poses. It’s what we happily called people that were fake in their lives and what they represented in the late 90’s as “posers”. He was a poser. Gary got it right and hit a nerve, got close to the jugular but backed down because there was so much heat on him in this segment. What once started as a bit got real REALLY fast and everyone knew it and took Howie’s side to let him lick his wounds and heal. And Ralph got him clothes from Hot Topic too lol. Had to. The way he dressed as an early 2000’s edgy teen smelled of Spencer’s and Hot Topic. That’s fine if you were a teen at the time but he was pushing 50 lol. Don’t remember the exact clip but it was so awesome when Sal’s wife called him out later on I think it was a Letterman appearance when he was pushing 60 and he went in with a hoodie and baggy pants lol. Good call
If Howard wasn't a poser then, He is def a poser now. 90's Stern was the peak of talk radio and paved the way to modern day podcasting. Sucks that he is so afraid of cancel culture now... If anything, it would be a PERFECT time to have classic Stern back with all the snowflakes and crybabies.
Gary was 100% right. Howard’s listening never evolved beyond Billy Joel and whatever he liked when he was fifteen; listening to Howard fawn over Pearl Jam today is ridiculous.
Damn i was 6 at this time and Howard was 40 something. That man is a gossil now. Crazy how appealing he was to so many age ranges tho i started listening at 11.
Gary (and Jackie) is right. During this time Howard was claiming to be a metal guy and was trying to portray the rock star look with the hair. He didn't really like metal! He likes the stuff he grew up with in the 60s (which was the good stuff imo) mixed with modern pop crap.
The first thing SJ ever said that was right was at the end when he says we all got into Pearl Jam on the first album. That is true. He’s got a good point.
