Tangerine Dream - Sorcerer Pat Metheny Group - The Falcon and the Snowman Ryuichi Sakamoto - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence Giorgio Moroder - Midnight Express Popol Vuh - Nosferatu
I remember seeing The Sorcerer in the theater in the 70's, and being so impressed by the music and Soundtrack. Was my first introduction to Tangerine Dream.
1. Saturday Night Fever 2. Heavy Metal 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix (ALL 3 FILMS) 4. Almost Famous 5. Rock Star 6. Purple Rain 7. Tarzan (Phil Collins)
Off the top of my head: 1. Vision Quest (best 80's movie) 2. River's Edge (SLAYER!!!!) 3..Boogie Nights (70's classics and early 80's) 4. Heavy Metal ('Nuff said) 5..Singles (Yeah Seattle but still good)
Big time honorable mention: Dirty Dancing - I don't give a shit what anyone thinks, it's an 80's classic especially if you were in high school at the time. The Swayze with She's Like the Wind fucking rules.
There are so many movie soundtracks I dig: Airheads, Natural Born Killers, Forrest Gump, Lost Highway, Magnolia, et al. But my absolute number one is.... The Crow (1994)
Dude I happened to pull up next to a car at a red light and they were blasting a song I'd never heard but I thought I should know. I used my phone to identify it and it was Fastway - After Midnight. I went home and bought the Trick or Treat CD. It totally kicks ass!
1) Blade Runner (my favorite movie) 2) Dazed and Confused 3) Heavy Metal 4) Fast Times At Ridgemont High 5) Repo Man I opted to not include any from Concert Films (Woodstock, The Last Waltz, Monterey Pop...)
Rocky IV for me is the absolute winner, love every track of that album. Others that have some songs that I love are Labyrinth, Streets of Fire, Days of Thunder, Top Gun, Iron Eagle, Heavy Metal, St. Elmo's Fire ...almost every 80s movie I guess. Thanks 🍺🤘!!
1) Thief 1981(music by Tangerine Dream) 2) Pulp Fiction 1994 3) Heavy Metal 1981 Hm Get Carter remake 2000 (not the typical SOT/HVS stuff, but I like it)
Highlander (Queen) Roadie (Cheap Trick, Blondie, Alice Cooper) Up The Creek (Cheap Trick, Heart, Shooting Star) Sgt. Pepper (Frampton, Aerosmith) The Exorcist (Mike Oldfield) Roadhouse (Jeff Healey Band) FM (Steely Dan among many other 70s artists)
There are plenty of these gems from the eighties: Fast Times @ Ridgemont High, Footloose, Heavy Metal, Vision Quest, Iron Eagle, Trick or Treat,Conan the Barbarian,Purple Rain,Lost Boys ....the list goes on & on!
Great topic! 1) Streets of Fire 2) Flashdance 3) Heavy Metal 4) Phantom of the Paradise 5) Eddie & the Cruisers The "soundtrack" that never was....The Elder by KISS
Natural Born Killers Lost Highway: these two soundtracks were created/compiled by Trent Reznor. The song selection creates such a dark and ominous mood, mirroring the movies well. Dazed & Confused: I can’t listen to songs like Tuesday’s Gone and Slow Ride without thinking of this movie. And it’s been many years since I’ve seen Heavy Metal. But I remember hearing Mob Rules for the first time in that movie and thinking it was amazing.
A few that came immediately to mind. Return of the Living Dead Donnie Darko Phantom of the Paradise Magical Mystery Tour Saturday Night Fever Purple Rain Demons Heavy Metal The Last American Virgin Times Square Repo Man Valley Girl FM Fear No Evil (1981 - punk)
I saw Goblin playing Suspiria. Cool stuff. There are so many great soundtracks. Too much to discuss. Should leaf through my soundtrack collection but l'm on holliday. But there are two that i play the most. Blade Runner by Vangelis and Thief by Tangerine Dream. Such awesoome electronic soundtracks.
Top 25: JAWS (1975) HEAVY METAL (1981) A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971) TOMMY (1975) UP IN SMOKE (1978) SUSPIRIA (1977) ROCK 'N ROLL HIGH SCHOOL (1979) MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (1978) DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993) DEMONS (1985) LABYRINTH (1986) URGH! A MUSIC WAR (1981) MIRACLE MILE (1989) / THIEF (1981) ALMOST FAMOUS (2000) THE BEYOND (1981) VELVET GOLDMINE (1998) HALLOWEEN (1978) EYES WIDE SHUT (1999) RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1984) BREAKING GLASS (1980) THE PAYBACK (1973) LOST HIGHWAY (1997) NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993) THE HARDER THEY COME (1972) REPO MAN (1984) TRICK OR TREAT (1986) VAMPYROS LESBOS (1971) Marc ⚡ p.s. ScaaaaaREW "Purple Rain"! What an overrated slab o' crap that is! And Prince, although quite talented, was NOT a "great" guitarist. He could solo okay...but even that is way overrated. And that smug attitude...midget on a motorcycle, in fluffy clothes. Give me a break...
🎶🕺💃🕺🏿💃 Saturday Night fever got to include it Vision quest Heavy metal Fast times at ridgemont high The decline of the western civilization the metal years And of course Woodstock the original soundtrack That's a quick top 5 off the top of the head
My top 2 are also live albums, in addition to being soundtracks: Monterey Pop & Woodstock. My 2 guilty pleasures are Saturday Night Fever & Rocky IV. 🎬 🪩🥊
As a big fan of film soundtracks, it's really hard to choose my favourites as I have so many but my list looks something like this 1. Mask Of The Phantasm 2. Blade Runner 3. The Dark Knight 4. Dune (2021) 5. Gladiator Great show and good to see film soundtracks getting some well deserved love
Mine would be: Empire Records River's Edge Guardians of the Galaxy Fast Times at Ridgemont High The Exorcist. Great show again, thanks Pete and gang. 🤘🤘
Ryan is in my good books this week for mentioning Phantom of the Paradise. The movie was a flop when it came out. The only place it was a hit is Winnipeg, Canada. I’m a Winnipegger. I am one of the kids who went to see it more than once. I’ve always loved the soundtrack. The movie is celebrated to this day in Winnipeg. A 50th anniversary show is being held there later this year, with a live band playing the soundtrack. I wish I could go to it, but not to be.
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: 1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn 2. Hair 3. Tron: Legacy 4. The Blues Brothers 5. Walt Disney's Fantasia Various Artists Soundtrack: 1. FM 2. Fast Times at Richmond High 3. Heavy Metal 4. Saturday Night Fever 5. Car Wash
I'll give four picks that come to mind: 1. Grease - not rock, but I freaking love that movie so much! 2. Almost Famous - Stillwater are one of the best fake rock bands to ever exist. 3. Lemonade Mouth - this one really shows my age and it's pop rock, but the songs are memorable and still hold up to this day! 4. Rock Star - Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer," Kiss' "Lick It Up," and Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" all on the same album? Heck yeah!
In no particular order, except perhaps the first three: This Is Spinal Tap Heavy Metal Singles Purple Rain Star Trek: The Motion Picture Dazed and Confused Superman: The Movie Times Square. (A cult Tim Curry film from 1980 that has a very cool soundtrack featuring a lot of punk and new wave artists like Ramones, XTC, Joe Jackson, Suzi Quatro, Patti Smith, Roxy Music, etc. I recently did a show - with Pete Pardo’s friend, Peter Kerr, on Rock Daydream Nation - where we did a deep dive on the soundtrack and the movie.) There are also a glut of teen comedies and dramas from the 80s that have great music on EPs and soundtracks, such as: Valley Girl The Big Chill Some Kind of Wonderful Ferris Bueller’s Day Off The Breakfast Club Footloose The Lost Boys Sixteen Candles Back to the Future Less Than Zero Pretty in Pink Risky Business Fast Times at Ridgemont High Say Anything, etc. I’ll stop myself right there. Great show, y’all! Cheers from The Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On & Pogo! Your clone and mine, ~ The Divine Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.
All of your mentions are excellent. Movies like Sixteen Candles were never given a proper soundtrack release, but you can find fan created CD's. Love the Valley Girl, also. I am a big fan of the Times Square movie as well, after seeing it multiple times in the theater in 1980. Soundtrack is fantastic, so I'm going to have to look up your discussions about it. The DVD I have has special commentary with it with Robert Stigler, the producer, and Robin Johnson. Pretty cool. They state how heavily cut the movie was, and the extra footage was never saved.
@@4tuneagent ~ Yes, you make many salient points. Sixteen Candles never had a full album release in the 80s, but there was a four or five track EP. Valley Girl had NO release in the 80s at all! A cool CD soundtrack FINALLY came out in the 90s. It was so successful that it even spawned a sequel release! Regarding Times Square, Pete Pardo’s friend - Peter Kerr - and l tackle a few issues you brought up. I hope you enjoy that particular show as well!
Soundtracks 01. Dazed & Confused 02. American Graffiti 03. Vision Quest 04. Singles 05. Almost Famous Original Score 01. Halloween 02. Friday the 13th Part IV 03. Back to the Future 04. Predator 05. Terminator

Superb episode, from a punk perspective the Suburbia soundtrack is great and the bands are in the film. Great choice Ralph. I got a great Blu-ray of it in the UK with a book and artwork.
Favourite soundtracks? In no particular order: The Jungle Book. Not rock, don't care. The first movie I ever saw at a cinema. The songs are all classics and I could sing the entire soundtrack even now. Singles. Cameron Crowe's ode to the Seattle "grunge" scene. Flash. Just backing up everything Craig said. Guardians Of The Galaxy. 3 movie soundtracks and the "Cosmic Mix" soundtrack to the animated TV series, featuring 2 James Gang songs, and one each by Joe Walsh, Queen, Thin Lizzy, Dobie Gray, Three Dog Night, Blue Swede and some 70's disco tunes. Paris, Texas. Ry Cooder's atmospheric acoustic slide blues. Honourable mentions: Bladerunner. Vangelis's classic Rocky Horror Picture Show. Probably the only one that could out camp Queen's Flash Iron Man 2. The Best Of AC/DC, by any other name.
Here’s my top 10 1. The Beatles Hard days Night 2. Forest Gump 3. The Blues Brothers 4. National Lampoon’s Animal House 5. Dazed and Confused 6. Heavy Metal 7. The Song Remains the same Led Zeppelin 8. Stop Making Sense Talking Heads 9. Singles 10. The Last Waltz
I know there's more but these off top of my head. 1. Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with me 2. Naked Lunch - Soundtrack 3. Apocalypse Now 4. Blade Runner 5. Lost Highway
Some alternative suggestions: 1. Easy Rider (Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf) 2.. Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai (translation: Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red In It) - the soundtrack to a reinterpretation of Purple Rain filmed in Agadez, Niger. Music written and performed by Tuareg guitarist Mdou Moctar combining African, blues and Hendrix influences. 3. Apocalypse Now (The Doors, Wagner) 4. Lost Highway (Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed, David Bowie) 5. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (Steve Vai, Faith No More) 6. Superfly 7. Shaft 8. The Warriors 9. Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me (genuinely creepy) 10. Vanishing Point
For the people like myself that love CONAN THE BARBARIAN soundtrack: There's an older PC game called Blade of Darkness the soundtrack is Conan the Barbarian like!🗡️⚔️
In no particular order: 1. Flash Gordon- Queen 2. The Untouchables- Ennio Morricone 3. OHMSS- John Barry 4. Beverly Hills Cop 5. Escape From New York- step forward, John Carpenter! 6. Iron Man and the funny films 7. The Blues Brothers 8. There’s Something About Mary 9. Role Models- Kiss, mainly 10. Old School- particularly the opening sequence to Ryan Adams! OM- OMG! Nearly forgot Yellow Submarine and Monty Python’s Holy Grail. RoadHouse Silver Dream Racer- David Essex! The Big Lebowski. PS. Great shout on Clockwork Orange, Ryan!
One from my youth that was always shown on Night Flight was Another State of Mind. Awesome soundtrack of California punk/hardcore. Cool documentary following Social Distortion and Youth Brigade in 1982 as they go on a DIY summer tour. They convert a late 60's school bus for the tour with both bands and crew living within. Needless to say, hilarity ensues. I was a teenager in my own band when this came out and saw it many times on the USA Network. The Night Flight show specifically. Awesome documentary that I would assume is somewhere on RU-vid. Check it out.
I had the VHS and DVD sitting right next to me, but didn't include it because I felt it was more of a documentary than a movie. I love Another State of Mind 🤘
@@countralfus6408 You are right Ralph, it IS a pure documentary I guess. Suburbia was more of a movie for sure, with Mike B the flea, who we all know. I think I was tripping on acid the first time I saw that, and the dog scene with the little kid at the beginning freaked me out.
The Hudson Valley Squares: Our 'Favorite Movie Soundtrack Albums! Rob Lisanti 5- Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 4- Tangerine Dream - Legend (Soundtrack) 3- Heavy Metal Soundtrack Chris Alo 9:51 5 5 5 5 5 5

Here are my top 5 soundtrack albums: - The Who "Quadrophenia" - Hazel O'Connor "Breaking Glass" - OST "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" - OST "Sweet Home Alabama " - Best of "James Bond Songs"
Boogie Nights!! The Wild Life is pretty darn good with some original instrumentals by Eddie Van Halen. Dazed and Confused, Reservoir Dogs, American Graffiti are also all great. Wendy Carlos did the music for Clockwork Orange, Tron and The Shining, all of which have great moments. Little did I know until just recently that Wendy began life as Walter (!) and was a pioneer in electronic classic music (1968’s Switched On to Bach).
- Heavy metal Soundtrack - Fast times at Ridgemont High Soundtrack - Tangerine dream - Sorcerer - Tangerine Dream - Legend - Airheads Soundtrack - Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack - Freddy Vs Jason Soundtrack
Yeah, the one guy picked Legend. It is an amazing soundtrack. Ridley Scott directed it, and I saw it in the theater when it came out. They should bring it back.
One that was recommended on The Album Years podcast that I was quite skeptical of but turned out to like quite a lot: The Virgin Suicides. Very good ambient/almost proggy music.
Can’t believe no one mentioned, Rock Star. It’s no Oscar winning Movie but I Love it because I grew up with the same dream! Plus the soundtrack is fun and has some great stuff on it!
Well going by Soundtracks and not scores these would be mine. 1. Purple Rain by Prince. One of the greatest albums of all time. 2. Batman by Prince 3. Return of the Living Dead 4. Baby Driver 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Also, The Wall kinda counts right?
Here are some of my fav soundtracks The Warriors love it my fav movie Valley Girl Hard knocks (Aust movie soundtrack) Top gun Roadhouse Forrest Gump The kids are alright (the who movie) The last American virgin Times Square
1. Guardians of the galaxy (all three films). 2. Kill Bill volumes 1&2. 3.Death Proof. 4.1001 nights ( An adult anime film featuring the Japanese hard rock blues band called The helpful soul). 5.The Last Unicorn (featuring the band called America).
Animatrix- an amazing movie soundtrack from an amazing Animatrix animated movie :) And The Cowboy Bebop Movie soundrack. And of course : AMERICAN POP!!!!
...most of my choices are listed below, but I have a few favorite "scores" (as opposed to "soundtracks," which I believe are 2 different entities...)...Danny Elfman's score to "Batman" was really cool...actually, just about everything Elfman does I'm a fan of...as for "Dazed And Confused," you need "Patrick's Mix," which compiles each and every single song you heard, in full or not, in the movie...I watched it from start to finish one day, pausing to recognize snippets of songs being played on car radios, and other songs left off of the soundtrack to make a "complete" soundtrack for it...pretty impressive list of songs...and, finally, here's one for Pete and the Journey fans here...to the best of my knowledge, I've never heard him bring up the soundtrack to the 1980 Japanese movie "Dream After Dream," which was the last album Gregg Rollie recorded with the band...except for maybe 2 songs, very un-Journey-like, but an interesting listen, all the same.
1. Escape from New York 2. Big Trouble in Little China 3. Firestarter (1982) 4. Bladerunner 5. Lost Boys 6. They Live 7. Tron 8. The Matrix 9. Krull 10. Hawk the Slayer
1. This Is Spinal Tap 2. Heavy Metal 3. A Hard Day’s Night 4. Purple Rain 5. Flash Gordon Scores: Star Wars, Superman the Movie, Star Trek I and II, Black Hole, Blade Runner, Princess Mononoke
Against All Odds. Side two has great instrumentals. Xanadu. Elo The Running Man. Just for John Parr's outro song Restless Heart. I wish Marillion with Fish would have done the Highlander soundtrack. Last Temptation of Christ. Peter Gabriel instrumentals. Lost Boys
Was wishing for a soundtrack episode for the longest time. Thanks HVS. Special thanks to Rob for his suggestion. Here are my picks . A - Music Score made specially for the film 3. The Clint Eastwood spaghetti western Trilogy. A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly 2. The Last of the Mohicans 1.Conan the Barbarian. B - Soundtracks with songs selected for the movie 3, Spawn 1997 2, Natural Born Killers 1. From Dusk Till Dawn
No order. Just mentions: Top Gun. Say what you will about the movie but it has some really uplifting and powerful tracks on it. A few songs in the middle are a bit 80's fluff but the memorable stuff gets me going. Blade Runner (by Vangelis). Perhaps not the most obvious soundtrack but give it a few spinns and it is very rewarding. Cinema Paradiso (by Ennio Morricone). Morricone is mostly famous for his western themes (with good right) but as a whole album.. This is probably my favorite. Just so touching music. I really like the movie but I think the soundtrack might be even better. The Godfather Part II (by Nino Rota). The Godfather always get mentioned as a movie but the soundtrack doesn't really get nearly as much love. I think the second movie has an even stronger soundtrack than the first.
Great topic picked by Rob and thanks to everyone for their picks and honorable mentions. Definitely a person who enjoys soundtracks and picking just five is difficult so here's five for at least right now. 1. Forrest Gump - for the kid in me who became a teenager at the end of the 60s 2. Jackie Brown - for Tarantino films, this it the one played the most 3. Purple Rain - favorite Prince album 4. Easy Rider - see explanation for the first choice and some other sentimental reasons 5. Grease - maybe a bit cheesy, but catchy songwriting and scratches a personal enjoyment of good musicals. And some not so much rock (& roll) or metal 1. Amadeus - for reigniting a personal love a classical music in general and this composer specifically 2. Shawshank Redemption - Thomas Newman too often not mentioned in film score composers. See Wikipedia for his list. So many good scores but going with this. 3. Jaws - John WIlliams [share the name but none of the fame]. Another great film composer and could pick several but going with a seasonal favorite hear. The most recognized two notes in music from the start. 4. Excluding Yellow Submarine - the other three Beatles soundtracks mentioned in the show. 5. O Brother, Where Art Thou. Mentioned in the episode and agree completely with those remarks. Thanks again, everyone. Not just for the music, but some history or the music and film choices.
This is incredibly difficult because I love a lot of movies. Here it goes 1) Heat ( Michael Mann always does a brilliant job picking music for his films and this soundtrack includes one of my favorite songs ever made God Moving Over the Face of the Waters by Moby) 2) Pulp Fiction (every song on that album is awesome!) 3) Dogtown & Z Boys ( a great soundtrack from one of my favorite documentaries ever made!) 4) The Crow (so many great bands and songs but to me the highlight is the Nine Inch Nails cover of Dead Souls by Joy Division) 5) Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence by Ryuichi Sakamoto (simple and powerful and moving plus the movie is fantastic!)
