i commented on your last build, and twenty minutes later i get a notification you created a new one! I really love using Karlach to throw things; mostly goblins because it makes me giggle. i want to main her with my next play where i chuck everything instead of bashing. Anywho love your builds. Thank you so much for teaching me how to play the game. I really love how you break down all the moves and spells. You videos definitely helped me to where now im more confident in playing in tactician. Really learned how to love the game outside of player creation and story mode. You also helped me play classes i would have never touched. seriously thank you again! My only critisim is that i wish you would list the skills, abilities, and favored spells in a top comment or description so i can go back and reference when i levelup. i try to note take, but im a moron and get things wrong. sometimes i miss important bits scrolling through or fast-forwarding. I totally understand not, but some builds where a commentor has left those have turned into my favorite because i can easily refer. i used to try to find build blogs that i can easily refer, but i learn better through video form and i prefer your explanations. you arent reading only the discription, but breaking it down what everything means and how its used during gameplay. thank you for not assuming your viewers fully understand how the class works. In relation to the eldritch knight part, and kind of in regards to the first video for these builds, I've found great success taking disguise self on EK for use of the dwarven thrower end game and free up the head slot, also has let me get karlach more levels in Barb for more rage uses per long rest. Longstrider is a very accessible spell so I've not had issues getting it in my party.
A build that I really want to make and would like to see your version of is Lae’zel with GWM, Sentinel, & Polearm Master. Add Skinburster & Gloves of the Growling Underdog, etc.
Thank you for posting this! Other than getting the extra attack from rogue later, is there any real downside to taking your fighter levels first? I'm wondering so that way I'm not stuck using the (kind of lame) returning pike through most of Act 1&2 lol.
That's definitely an option! It will make the build come online a fair bit later since you'll delay access to rage and Extra Attack (with fighter 3 / barb 5 / rogue 4) - if you want to go that route, you might want to consider either just playing the eldritch knight version of the build I posted a couple days ago, or going Fighter to level 7 so you still get Extra Attack at 5, then respecing into barb/fighter at level 8. One of the great things about the thrower is they get huge power spikes at level 3,4,5, and 8, which should fall on the hardest parts of the game, so I'd hesitate to push that back too far - you'll still be a barb/fighter multiclass though, which is a top tier build in and of itself!
well now a new way to build Karlach which I never thought of doing. And with her using strength there are the gauntlets that raise your strength to 23 or use the strength potions either of these two ways means you can dump strength. Now I think I'll start a new games since I got 3 solid Characters Tav, Shadowheart and now Karlach.
Hey man some of us like to use broken/bugged builds. Doing absurd damage is fun and a lot of fun things in video games are because of bugs/glitches that weren’t intended to be a thing.
If I as a new player just liked to min/max as I RP through the game, going slow and steady...to keep myself optimized at each level, and based on new gear and buffs, what would each companion look like at each level as you play and then the break points to respec. Seems like until you get the right gear, Karlach is better as a monk, but once all the pieces are place, respec to this Barb thrower is optimal. Starting direct at level 12, and having all the gear to make these builds, is fun. I get an idea of where I'm going, it just doesn't seem to help until I get all that stuff. If that makes sense. I guess it would require a far more comprehensive guide that was part build and part walkthrough. I guess too much effort. But figured I'd ask.

What are you guys throwing in act 1 to do so much damage? I tried this with the flaming great sword, I’m level 4. And my strength is 21 from the health potions. But I’m not doing much damage. Only like 9 per throw with that sword
Really liking your videos as I do another playthrough, but it's sometimes hard to follow when you don't expand on the gear you're using. Usually the gear is very important as it makes the level up choices even more potent, but you talked about 2 of the 7 items she has on right after say how important her gear was. Sure I could go and try to match all the pictures, but I have to ask why you don't explain the gear after explaining the leveling so deeply?
At 19:56, you mentioned picking up Elditch Knight to bind non-returning weapons, and you use the example of Selune's Spear. At 22:31, you say that we need a weapon with the returning property because we *aren't* an Eldritch Knight, and the weapons mentioned as best in slot are Dwarven Thrower and Nyrulna. If we have easy access to those two weapons before reaching lvl 12 which unlocks Weapon Bond, why would we need to throw Selune's Spear? Do people hit lvl 12 in Honour Mode before leaving Act 2? Also, why do you say that the Dwarven Thrower is something you will be using for most of the game before switching over to Nyrulna if you can get them both at the beginning of Act 3?
I was going this path but since it requieres too many levels, I rather respec her with the Laezel thrower build, which can bond since level 3 already. I´m using the crab-spear weapon.
wouldn't it work just as well if i use elixir of cg strength/hg strength and set it strength to 8 or 10 and out the points into 16 dex(14+2); 16(15+1) wis and then add +1 to my 15 con with tavern brawler? Or did I not listen properly?
I came across a video showing off a multiclass with a Barbarian and a Warlock that I decided to try out. It’s actually pretty fun. The basics are: 5 levels of barbarian, 7 levels of The Fiend warlock with the Weapon pact. Get armor of agathys and some reaction-based or movement focused warlock spells (basically anything that doesn’t require concentration). I like Hellish Rebuke for some off-turn damage. Turn on the armor spell, charge into melee, and start swinging. If you can’t melee, throw your weapon. Laugh as enemies hurt themselves attempting to attack you. Out of rage charges? Don’t worry, you’re still a fully functional warlock with Eldritch Blast who is also great in melee with three attacks per turn at level 10. Just dump strength for charisma and you’re a party face. Doesn’t really get the benefit of tavern brawler, unfortunately. But then again, throwing isn’t the primary strategy here-just a way to keep rage going.
I already did almost this exact build (only on normal difficulty however) and I found myself running out of rage charges frequently, and therefore continued in barbarian rather than going into fighter. I think a good item to offset this would be that which gives the character “Celestial haste”. Since it is a concentration spell, it cannot be used while raging but therefore it almost acts as an additions rage charge.
You could have a hireling cast weapon bond on weapon and then transfer that weapon to your inventory. In that instance, would it still be best to dip into fighter? Or wouldn’t it be best to just pick up 3 more levels of barbarian
Can you explain, how starting class effects the build? I did a respec and started with rouge and therefore lost my medium armor proficency... I got a few more starting skills in return but maybe there is other things that are effected by starting class?
Starting class affects three things - your available skills, your weapon and armor proficiencies, and your saving throws. Many times multiclassing later will let you pick up the weapon and armor proficiencies, but whatever class you start with will determine what skills you can be proficient in and what two saves you're proficient in as well.
I'm doing a similar build for Karlach except using levels of monk instead of fighter. Yeah, I don't get the action surge which does impact my DPR but I like the fact Karlach runs around beating people up bare-handed, throwing enemies around, hitting motherfuckers with another motherfucker, and so forth. Also bonuses to speed stack, so she's very fast and can cover a lot of ground.
Also…is there benefit to going eldritch knight earlier so that non-returning versatile weapons (like Vision of the Absolute or Lightning Jabber) can be used with a shield as opposed to being shieldless while using Returning Pike?
You can definitely do that! The levelling order is somewhat flexible, though one of the nice things about this build is it has huge power spikes at 3, 4,5, and 8, which should all fall right at some of the hardest encounters in the game. Taking fighter earlier does delay those, but of course you can also just mix and match the fighter version of the build and barb version with respecs to hit both build's power spikes!
I dont get the whole eldritch knight thing. Why the weapon bond at lvl 12 (means: endgame) when your best in slot weapons (dwarfen thrower and Nyrulna) return anyway? Its just for that, right? Or am i missing something?
Mostly it's for Action Surge, which is the best way to increase your damage. EK utility is better than the (tiny) champion crit bonus, and you can't use battlemaster maneuvers with thrown weapons, so it's the best subclass once you're in fighter

I'm interested in making a build centered around protecting allies. I want to go Protection Fighting style in the Fighter class. What else could I go? I'm kind of looking for something to just substitute the Rogue dip in this build.
Normally you can't rage while wearing heavy armour, so I don't believe so - that *might* not apply to the helmet though, in which case there could be a case for it. I haven't tested that specifically, but I'd assume it doesn't work.
"Ring of Flinging" could be useful/important to the build as it gives : "Throwing Boost: The wearer gains a 1d4 bonus to throw damage." as I'm sure theirs other options as well. Also would have been nice to see what gear you specifically run on this build as you are the creator , we can get an Idea but it's better to show your choices and why you chose them like you did with nearly everything else, It would give us a better idea and understanding of the build and the possibilities we can branch off into. That's correct but I'm not sure what you're getting at. The way I stated it works in the video is the way it works in game. It's buggy but that's how it is.
@@Cephalopocalypse actually you can carry a one handed weapon and a shield and you get the duelling bonus on throws if you throw while one your melee setup. this gives you +1 ac as well as +2 damage on your throws compared to defense, so duelling is superior to defense in every way as long as you are not using a returning 2handed weapon for throwing.
@@szemyahdefense stacks with the shield, it's arguably at end game if you really need the 1ac since many enemies won't be able to hit you reliably anyways but 2 damage is basically nothing vs negating 20 damage 5% more often
@@BinxyBrown oh true, you can carry a shield with defense as well. you are right. not so sure about 2 damage being nothing, since it adds up over time, but yeah, defense is probably the better option.
The weapon is the only important piece of gear! The other gear we have equipped here is just for the visual, not because it's what you should be using.
hey, just wanted to leave a comment that may help or not for future, you did put time stamp called gear, and then you talked about 2/3 weapons and all other time about the potion, without talking about any other piece of gear to other slots, so basically you talked about weapons and 0 info about the rest of gear. Im not trying to be rude or whatever, its just legit miss information, wasting people's time, and again, im sorry if this sounds rude, its not my purpose at all, You doing a build guide so information its the vital part of it. best of luck for your channel.
Great build guide as usual, i beat honour mode last week with my Tav halfling thrower to really maximise bounded accuracy and it was a a ton of fun, although i found Nyrulna was much better for fights such as the one in the house of hope.
Without trying to sound too gamey and bug abusey. I think you can have a hireling in camp that's an eldritch knight bind to the jabber spear (that does extra lightning when thrown) and give it to your character. It should now function as a bound weapon on your throwing barbarian. It's technically stronger than your other options and afaik pretty even with nyrulna, although the latter can do some nutty stuff when used properly.
What Armor and dye are you using? As I'm loving it. Also there is a mod on Nexus entitled "Thrown Weapon Pack" There is a hammer, an ax, dagger, spear that gives you 19 strength and decent damage as well.
I'm doing the same build, but with Minsc and he is constantly drunk with Hoots Hooch. There is a boot Tarra sells, Slinging Boots. With TB and PDB, it is impossible to miss. It fits his character so well. He is cursed with boots he cannot unequip, with his 6 Wisdom, all he can do is throwing it over his enemies.
@@CreativeExcusesGaming it's optimally theory crafted to always providing you laugh while playing, lol. Hoots' Hooch alone is fun. Polymorped into into sheep in the middle of combat always give me good laugh. Go try it, I'm on Tactician, and it's still endlessly fun.
useful tip: hire a hireling, spec it to be an eldrich knight, then leave it in the camp, you can use it to bind your weapon and then hand it to your barbarian once pr. day, this saves you from going eldrich knight on your thrower character and you can take 1 level in war cleric instead or rogue for the extra feat.
The thing with the war cleric... I dont get it. So you mean instead Rouge 4 lvls, you mean Rogue 3 lvls and war cleric 1 lvl? But You get the feat at lvl 4 no?
@@CriticalPosthumanism you get extra bonus action from rogue-thief at lvl3 (you gain additional FEAT at lvl4) With 1 lvl war cleric you gain 3 extra attacks per long rest. Is how I think this works. So you lose a feat and gain 3 extra attack opportunities per long rest
Doesnt war cleric Just turn your Attack Ressource from Action to bonus action? If yes, you dont want that as barbarian because you can already throw with your Bonus actions... And in honour Mode it probably doesnt Stack extra attacks so its Just worse than enraged throw 😅
I _would_ use the Nyrulna for my throwing character… But it got bugged when I sent Lae’zel back to camp and it disappeared from her main hand. Now I can’t get it back >
"The Dwarven Thrower is the best in slot for a chunk of the game"... I'm confused, I just tonight got the Dwarven Thrower in my current playthrough, and then immediately got Nyrulna right after, with only like 6 enemies between... They're essentially available at the exact same point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
so it seems like there is 2 pretty similar thrower builds that I keep coming across. this one and one using fighter as dueling and taking eldritch knight to use lightning jabber and rhapsody. which one would be better?
what you forgot to mention is that if you rush to get 20 strength then you'll be able to pick up and throw most enemies at each other (it takes 20 STR to throw a humanoid) it might not be the most optimal playstyle ever but it sure is one of the funniest ones
If you can get away with not wearing armor or just want that nice unarmored barbarian flavor, you can cast mage armor from eldrich knight on yourself for some extra AC
I've found if you throw it at an enemy before combat and dont on hit them, then it won't return. The start of combat thing kinda bugs out the return of the weapons.
i know i am late to the party. haven't found a more recent thrower video @Cephalopocalypse, so i'm posting here. has anyone tried going 6 fighter (champion)/5 warlock (great old one)/1 rogue for endgame (from lvl 10 on) instead of barbarian/EK/rogue stuff? you can bind your primary weapon and use nyrulna or the dwarven hammer in offhand. with deeper pact from lvl 5 warlock you get 3 attacks just like lvl 11 fighter would do. moreover you get an extra feat due to fighter lvl 6 and hex from warlock which is an extra dmg rider. the 1 rogue dip for the sneak attack dmg rider. when being hasted this build outperforms barbarian/EK build by quite a bit in terms of dmg. it's also nice to psionic overload (only possible if the thrower is your main char, obviously) with your BA for an another dmg rider. as barbarian you usually want to use your BA for throwing attack. try it, it's an awesome build and you also crit quite often. only downside is the movement/positioning. due to BA dash the barbarian build has better movement and therefore better positioning. as we all know throwing can be awkward in caves/buildings/etc. so using misty step scrolls or learning the spell from warlock lvls is quite mandatory.
Sadly on honour mode, the extra attack from Pact of the Blade doesn't stack with other sources of extra attack. Very solid build for tactician and below though!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is kinda like a ranged monk with fewer attacks? My TB monk was hitting for about 45 damage/hit and attacking a minimum of 6 times a round (without haste or wholeness of body running). I guess you gain a bit of toughness using barbarian with rage, but I'm not sure it's worth the trade? Also, unless you're using Selune's spear over Nyrulna or dwarven thrower for some reason, it seems pointless to pick up EK that late. Wouldn't you be better off with champion?
I have my Karlach built this way and use the weapon bond on a Lightning Jabber spear. It works really well against single-target enemies that are too close to teammates, since Nyrulna doesn't discriminate with the AoE damage. I also haven't bothered with the Dwarven Thrower.
For just simple Tactician would it be feasible to start with 1 lvl as Thief for all the skill bonuses? As my main character for RP implications. I feel like delaying Barb 5 by a level wouldn't really be so bad but maybe I'm misremembering something around that point in the campaign... (worst case scenario respec at 5 to pure barb)
Definitely! This build is very much on the high-power end, so you can make a number of changes without losing out too much. It will delay your power spikes by one level, but since this build normally gets them at level 3, 4, and 5, moving those to 4,5,6 is not that big of a cost.
Im also confused about the starting class... Dont understand it 100% and Just wrote a comment about different starting classes What i can Tell you so far: you wont have medium Armor with Rouge Starter class
BTW, I'm using this exact build in an honor mode right now. She's a beast. Thanks for this. She reminds me of the hulk in the scene where he hulk smashes puny god loki lol.. Short fight story, but she got the drop on raphael, she had higher initiative. She picked him up and threw him on his head and he never got a shot off the entire fight because of her lol.. again many thanks
The most synergistic is probably some kind of stealth archer (I have tons of videos for these, so pick your favorite), to use the cloak you get at maximum capacity, but any build can work!
I know it’s not optimal, but I actually prefer throwing karlach’s random collection of weapons at enemies rather than a returning spear. Something about knocking a minotaur prone with a little hammer is very satisfying 😆 And she has a bunch of BOOOAL arms just in case.
True! The real joy of the throwing build is flinging barrels and goblins around - I actually wish they'd made that closer in power level tothrowing a weapon, since it's so much more fun
