PSA:
We live in a time where moments eclipse us without even as much as a blur. Sometimes we may feel there is never enough hours in the day. As parents, teachers and leaders of young minds, we must make sure to take a few minutes a day to sit down with our children and ask; how their day was, how they are doing, what they learned. Let them know you are there for them, Be more involved with them. With these seemingly small and daily conversations; we can learn what we need to do to help guide them down the path of love, understanding and empathy. They, and perhaps all of us need to learn to cherish their friendships and be the type of friend they would want to have. At times there is no better healing than the kind of trust, love and acceptance that you get from your closest of friends. Be there and let them be there in those darkest of moments in life. Children very young and even into adulthood need to know you will be there for them when life gets tough and to catch them when they fall. You are the support system they need. We must take time for our children daily for they are the future.
Each day 12 children die from gun violence in America. Another 32 are shot and injured. Guns are the leading cause of death among American children and teens. 1 out of 10 gun deaths are age 19 or younger. Since Columbine in 1999, more than 338,000 students in the U.S. have experienced gun violence at school. There were more school shootings in 2022 46 than in any year since Columbine. This mirrored America’s broader rise in gun violence as it emerged from the pandemic. Research shows that if we “know the signs” of gun violence, we can prevent it and reverse the trend. In 2022, 34 students and adults died while more than 43,000 children were exposed to gunfire at school. In 4 out of 5 school shootings, at least one other person had knowledge of the attacker’s plan but failed to report it. Almost all mass school shooters shared threatening or concerning messages or images. Bystanders saw warning signs in most documented active shooter cases. Our deepest and most sincere condolences go out to the victims, families and friends of mass school shootings. Too many to count are the lives that have been lost in these senseless acts of violence. We will now take a moment to acknowledge those affected by these horrific events.
