Not all of us measure up to this societal ideal in every way, and that's fine, as long as we're trying our best and telling the truth. If we throw away those values for short-term comfort in our inadequacies, we are setting up future generations of men for unbelievable suffering, worse than our own. Society's definition of a man exists for a reason. The better we measure up, the better equipped we are to create value, improve lives and deal with hardship. We should want to be strong, confident, intelligent, we should want to not complain, not to let things get to us, never to be beaten. Those are good qualities. The idea of what a man ought to be does not need to change, it's a noble ideal, so let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. A man is told to toughen up, to get on with things. Many don't know how, so they pretend and have bad outcomes. Is the answer to change society so that men no longer need to be tough or carry on? I don't believe so. That doesn't help anyone. We will always need to be tough. There will always be hardship. We should help each other become tough, become able to continue on. We need encouragement, understanding and mentorship. Not a redefinition that makes us feel good right at this moment.
