The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Paper Mill Playhouse

We recently dropped in on the opening night of The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey. It’s a story that’s been told many times, in many different ways - from the 1923 silent film starring Lon Chaney, to the classic Disney animated musical. But, after years of evolution - with new stage productions in Berlin, California, and now New Jersey, Disney Theatrical Group has crafted a show that is closer to the source material - the 1831 masterpiece written by French poet, playwright, and novelist Victor Hugo.

@@fanfictionandthings784 from what I’ve heard, it’s very unlikely as they have a HUGE choir and the Broadway union doesn’t want to pay THAT many people. I think I heard that they even asked them to cut the choir in half and the writers were like “no”, which I don’t blame them, the choir is amazing

The Hellfire sequence in the movie is an indicator of what could have been added to the movie to make it as compelling as the stage show seems to be...of course the dark elements they did keep still makes the movie different and pretty emotionally charged in some scenes (again Hellfire sequence)

I can predict that if Disney remade this, they would do most of the play except the ending and it would get a PG-13 rating.
@maxleunig4072
@maxleunig4072 5 лет назад
I feel like they would have to do a creative compromise for the ending (I.e. Esmeralda dies and Quasimodo throws Frollo off the roof but during the "Someday" reprise Quasimodo sees her ascending to heaven with the saints). In other words, providing some form of comfort, but keeping the darkness intact.
@MovieEnforcer
@MovieEnforcer 4 года назад
How the 1996 Disney version was going to end. I would go this route personally. I imagine it being similar to Darth Vader’s death at the end of Return of The Jedi (Esmeralda + Phoebus = Luke and Dying Quasimodo = Dying Darth Vader). That would be very emotionally powerful and it would make me cry: “The filmmakers briefly considered having Quasimodo killed off, since that is his fate in the original novel. He was originally supposed to be stabbed by Frollo, then Esmeralda regains consciousness and tries to save him by killing Frollo. Phoebus was then supposed to meet up with them, and Quasimodo's last wish was to ring the bells one last time. They take him to the bells, then Esmeralda and Phoebus help him ring the bells as he dies. The final shot was going to include Esmeralda and Phoebus crying over their best friend as the people of Paris cheer for their success, unaware of Quasimodo's death. Luckily, this is not the ending that was used because even hardcore fans of the novel agree that the ending they used instead was a more suitable conclusion for the theme of this film”.

Disney is currently developing a live action remake of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They’re reinstating the three comedic gargoyles and re-recasting their villain Frollo as a judge as he was in the animated version, and actor Josh Gad is producing the remake as well as playing the role of Quasimodo.
