Actually yeah we do find out exactly how haymitch won his games in the second book but since it's not put in the movie directly I will tell you right now he was 16. It was the second quarter quell in the quarter quell they add a new temporary rule to make it a more entertaining games and when he was there for the 50th they were like let's double the number of kids from each district, two boys and two girls. So he was in there with 47 other kids. He was 16. How he survived was he found the edge of the arena and realized if you drop something over this cliff, at the border of the arena it would bounce back. I believe he found that out with like a pebble or something. Then when it came down to him and the last girl in the arena they both had gaping wounds. She had an eye falling out. He had his guts hanging out and she threw an ax at his head. He dodged it. It flew over his head and out of the arena, then bounced back and hit her in the skull and for taking advantage of that flaw of the arena. They killed his entire family and his girlfriend. He's got PTSD. He drinks all day and sleeps all night with a knife under his pillow

Something that they left out of the movies. Katniss actually ended up with hearing damage from the bomb that she set off at the cornucopia. On the point of “why don’t they just rebel?” If you think about this even in terms of America, people witnessed and participated in horrifying acts against other people for centuries. And to this day police brutality/killings, mass shootings, racial killings, etc. remain a constant way of life. And people simply pull out their cell phones and watch and feel they have no power to stop it and when they do try, and they go protest those protest end exactly like how we saw in 11 with more police brutality, arrests, etc. with no change. So in a real-world country where stuff like this (and worse) happens every day and nobody’s doing anything about it, it’s hard to critique a fantasy land where it happens to 24 people a year, kids or not.
@jlerrickson
@jlerrickson Год назад
Not just that, but there have been uprisings over the years. The districts are too isolated from each other to support each other when they happen, so the Capitol puts them down fairly quickly. Rue's district is particularly prone to rebel.
@V_4_Versace
@V_4_Versace Год назад
@@jlerrickson yeah it’s a lot harder than people think to have actual meaningful rebellions in big countries, like France can do it because it’s barely the size of one American state (no shade to France, I love when they rebel and protest lol 🫶)
@davidfairweather3301
@davidfairweather3301 Год назад
@@jlerricksonthe Hunger Games is also very effective at pitting them against each other so they never truly trust each other. The careers specifically are often despised by the other districts because they’re seen as lap dogs of the capitol and are given advantages to aid them in winning most years. Even within the districts, we see in 12 that they have the divide in economic economic wealth, with the merchant section, and the Seam. Despite Katniss being friends with Madge, her and Gale do resent the fact that she has never had to worry about being reaped or where her next meal comes from. The tesserae system makes it so the poorest in the district often end up being angry at those in their own district who have more than them.
@melissawilliams9934
@melissawilliams9934 Год назад
Let’s not forget that they are unarmed also. Having a weapon is a death sentence even in the most lax districts. That’s why Katniss hides her bow out in the woods. The peacekeepers have weapons, are trained, have body armor, and will not hesitate to kill your whole family if you are caught.
@ddiaz28
@ddiaz28 Год назад
One thing you said is you didn't like how the other characters seem to enjoy killing. They probably don't explain it well in the movie but many of the more well off districts actually train some of their children to compete in the games. So they are pretty much raised to eventually volunteer and have the honor of representing their district. It's messed up. So that's why some of them seem to be way more comfortable with the whole thing from the start.

@knoellka

The lottery system isn't described that good in the movies, so it is a bit confusing. If I'm remembering it correctly, when you turn 12 you can be reaped for the games. You start off with one name in the glass and each year one get's added (13=2×, 14=3×, etc.). So at age 18 (the oldest you can be reaped) technically your name would be seven times in there. The outer districts are very poor so you can "freely" add in your name more times in exchange for wheat, lantern oil and other supplys. That's why Gales name is in there so much. He has younger siblings and is feeding his family. In the books it is described that he doesn't want his siblings to buy food and to put their name in more often than necessary so he does it all. Hope that helps! I really love your videos ♡

I feel like the reason the countdown is like a minute is to give the kids a chance to look around the arena and get a plan together of where the hell they're going to go and to tempt them letting them see the weapons in the cornucopia. But yeah that's why you're not allowed to move for a minute because if you get off of the platform before the minute is up, that's cheating. And the f****** thing will blow up when they set up those bombs around the cornucopia to protect their food. Yeah, that's where those bombs came from

Haymitch trauma, besides just having been in the games, is that he, as the lone district 12 winner, gets dragged out every year forced to mentor children that will die. He has no choice there so for about 25 years he's done nothing else but drink and watch kids die that are technically "in his responsibility", with no amount of effort on his part making a difference. A single fuck left in the guy is more than you would expect at this point. As for the tributes that are portrayed as "psycho-killers", it's mentioned in passing in the movie but is kinda a really relevant plotpoint that the first couple districts (particularly 1 and 2) are actually quite rich because of their economies. So they have volunteers on the regular, who are literally raised and trained to win the games (like authoritarian states tend to raise olympic athletes). These districts are fairly capital loyal because these academy alumni mean the actual kids in those districts are pretty much "save" since there is always a volunteer pair that is, yeah, pretty much a psycho killer that spent years training to kill other kids.

Hey Tavare, great reaction. I don't know if anyone has already told u about why they had the Hunger Games in the 1st place. Panem was once America. It ended up being bombarded by natural disasters, over population & famine. After the chaos of that time, the country was divided into 13 Districts & the Capitol, which provided a form of government. Each District provided goods or services ie. Katniss & Peeta's District 12 provides coal, Rue's District 11 is agriculture, & so on, most of which was going to the Capitol. The government that was suppose to be looking out for its people was not. The people felt as though they were being exploited & many were still starving.Seeing the Capitol getting fat & rich off them, they did rebel with a push from District 13. The biggest threat to the Capitol during The Great Rebellion was District 13. The Capitol annihilated that district & squashed the rebellion. As punishment, each District had to offer up one male & one female child to the Hunger Games. Katniss & Peeta's Hunger Games was the 74th. Haymitch's (Woody Harrelson- I noticed u were struggling to get his name.) Hunger Games was the 50th. The Capitol decided that for every 25yrs they would do something special to keep people watching. O, & just so u know they change the arena. Katniss lucked out that it happened to be a forest setting. She was afraid it was going to be a desert,cityscape or some other place she wasn't familiar with. Rue was w/Katniss longer in the book than in.the movie. The Hunger Games usually lasted for weeks. Rue knew how to treat Katniss's TrackerJacker stings because her mom taught her out of necessity. In District 11, there are a lot of TrackerJacker nests in the trees. People would get stung often. In the book, after Rue dies, her District sponsors Katniss w/fresh bread as a thank you for showing Rue love & respect while she was dying & looking out for her as long as she could. Fresh bread was expensive so it was hard to come by, especially the outer Districts. They usually got something akin to hard tack or as I like to call it "hockey puck" bread, plus a part of the rations they were given "flour" that they doubted was actual flour. O, & those gnarly dogs that corner Katniss, Peeta & Kato on top of the Cornucopia, they r even more disturbing in the book. The fallen contestants were genetically engineered into strange werewolf looking creatures, known as MUTTS, but still had their human eyes. Katniss was afraid that they did that to Rue, & did not want to see her eyes looking back @her thru the creature's grotesque face. Peeta really does have feelings for Katniss, but Katniss is unsure about her feelings for him. She plays into the romance angle to survive the game, & convinces herself Peeta is doing the same thing. In the book, she doesn't even know how she feels about Gale (her best friend & hunting buddy) either, but like Peeta, Gale does have feelings for her. I don't know if u get that hunting in the woods is suppose to be illegal, but the Peace Keepers (militia cops) turn a blind eye as long as they get 1st pick of whatever they hunt. & yes, that fence is suppose to be electrified, but the Capitol began to neglect sending electricity to the outer Districts, except for the day of The Reaping, & I think during the Hunger Games. I hope I have explained a few things. I might be slightly off about the creation of the Hunger Games, but that's what I remember from the book. Anyway, as I said, another great reaction. See u on the next movie reaction.😊

Thank you, that filled me in a lot! I also did notice when the Mutts were chasing them; they had strangely distorted faces and human-like eyes. We didn't get too many clear views of them, but there were enough that I caught those strange faces. They'd rushed a bit of the background knowledge in the beginning, probably because they thought it would waste too much time. However, I really do enjoy getting a better understanding of the District's position in all of this. So again, I thank you! See you in the next movie reaction :)

They don’t explain much besides maybe a single throw away comment from Effie but the reason it seems like a few of them enjoy it is because they kind of do enjoy it. There are 13 districts. In order, the closest numbers like 1,2, and I think 3’s are better off districts because they’re closer to the capital and live a much better quality of life. The lower the district the lower the standard of living. Also, the wealthier districts have expensive special “fighting academies” for kids to train their whole lives to practically guarantee the wins. That’s why they’re so brutal and eager as apposed to others.

Haymitch has a whole thing in this movie explaining how the Careers are from districts 1 and 2 and typically get sent to a school to train until they turn 18 at which point they volunteer for the games. Cato even has multiple lines about how vicious he is and how he will bring glory to his district/make his district proud. I feel like that's a pretty good indication of how they (The Careers) are brought up to enjoy killing and value strength and glory above all else.
@peikathryn
@peikathryn Год назад
The reason Katniss blew up the supplies from the district 1 and 2 contestants is because they didn't know how to hunt their own food because although they were trained in battle they didn't have to know how to hunt. Also the sponsors would send them food if they needed it because they tended to win. Katniss didn't need the supplies because she could survive on her hunting skills.

You get your name put in according to your age, and the entries accumulate (12-year-olds get their names put in once, 13-year-olds: twice, all the way up to 18-year-olds who will have their names in seven times.) Any additional entries are based on a person taking out Tesserae which also accumulates (Tesserae is credit for a year's worth of Government rationed oil and grain for a single person. Katniss took out three Tesserae in her own name for herself, Prim, and her mother starting when she was twelve, so by the time she was sixteen, her name was in there twenty times; five times for her age, and fifteen for the three Tesserae she took out every year.)

To be honest that's a poor comparison. Because here's the thing: schools are doing everything they can to prepare for a potential shootout and protect their students. The problem is the Constitution itself; specifically the 2nd Amendment. As long as the right to bear arms is not revoked by a Congressional vote, right wingers will do everything they can to stop any form of gun legislation. They think the best solution is to arm the teachers and staff which honestly may be the best chance to save students. As long as teachers pass a criminal/mental health background, and of course keep it away from the students, it could potentially work. A lot more could be done if we funded our schools instead of the military. But politicians won't do it because of political reasons but that's a different issue. But when it comes to keeping military grade weapons out of civilian hands, they will argue till their blue in the face 'shall not be infringed'.

so Katniss was taught to hunt and carve a bow by her father when she was younger. All men after they reach the reach the age of 19 and are no longer reaping age (12-18) are automatically put into work at the coal mine (unless the family owns a business like Peeta’s family owning a bakery, peacekeepers mainly buy from them and district 12 civilians trade with them). Anyways when Katniss’ father died in a accident in the coal mine, her mother mentally shut down and didnt work so katniss, primrose and their mother were starving. Peeta purposely burnt bread for her when he noticed her in the rain an inch from death, got beat by his father and his parent told him to throw the bread to their pigs. Peeta secretly threw the burnt bread to her, and she regained the strength to go out and find her bow and start providing for her family by selling and trading her hunted prey at the market to other civilians and peacekeepers. The peacekeepers as a result dont turn on the electric fence so civilians can hunt cause they arent that well off either since district 12 is usually forgotten. Also sending items into the game is really expensive especially as the game gets closer to the finale, so like katniss’ salve for her burn wound would be remarkably cheaper than the soup she shared with peeta later on.
@KaraOni13

the ranking is 1-12 so when Katniss got an 11, and Peeta got an 8 it was out of 12. There has never been a 12 so Katniss getting an 11 put a HUGE target on her back. It basically said to the other tributes the Katniss was the shoe in to win the game and if they wanted a higher chance to win they needed to hunt Katniss down asap hence why the Cato (sword guy/d2), Clove (knife girl/district 2), Glimmer(girl who died from wasps/d1), Marvel (spear dude who killed rue/district 1) allianced together. Truthfully if they killed Katniss, They would’ve killed Peeta right after. So Peeta basically saved himself by working with them (free body guards!) to find Katniss, then betraying and running away from them after Katniss dropped the wasps on them. Also remember the Hunger Games is a tv show to the Capitol public, so sponsor money is the budget for new genetic and more lethal creatures.

They're given a lot of gifts from the capital for just being part of the district that sent the winner, but there's a lot of dark stuff that happens once you win and it's not just that you have to be mentally tortured by getting to know these kids to send them to their death. Just a comment to help you. Gale is not her boyfriend. She had been friends with him for a couple years, and they learned to hunt together and they split the food and money to take care of both families. Regarding the children who were "enjoying" killing. Those districts teach the kids from a very very young age to fight. They force them to watch propaganda and therefore want to bring "Pride" to their district by winning. The first 2 districts are very very much like the capitol with wealth but the difference is they are forced to play the games, but the first 2 districts don't see it that way, they see it as volunteering for recognition, fame, and freedom to visit the capitol and to become rich. The other districts just want money to survive.Oh and about the playing up for the cameras. For Katniss the kisses were for the cameras, but the things she said, and the fear that she had when she thought Peeta had died were real. She doesn't know what to do with her feelings. Peeta has loved her for a long long time, while Katniss has only had admiration and care that he gave her bread when her and her family hadn't eaten in days. She is NOT used to affection. The only thing in her life has been survival.

I’ve had the strangest urge to rewatch this movie lately, what a coincidence! Can’t wait to see your reaction. As someone who didn’t read the books, the first one is really well crafted, the sequel is good but just doesn’t hit the same mark, and I wasn’t a fan of the last two! Maybe I was missing context from the books, but that first one is really something special

Everything before and leading up to these 74th games was interesting. The districts were made to fear rebellion so much because (like they alluded to in the video at the reaping), the last time they did, District 13 was completely destroyed. Most of the districts are poor with very little means to communicate and coordinate an attack with each other being so spread out. They are made to hate each other in the Games, especially in the Career Districts (those who likely the most resources and could potentially coordinate and lead) but instead are made to see each other as kill and game for sport and glory. So instead of showing a united front to stop the Games, they buy into the propaganda and aim to win the Games individually to buy their freedom instead. Adults will not be reaped into the games so if you are lucky enough not to get picked before you turn 18, you are technically free from that fear, just poor living conditions and heavy labor. I cant remember if they say so in the books but parents may be incentivized to have children for better chances of survival, also Im sure you are also hoping life will be better by the time your children get of age. It is horrible but people have no hope and in their eyes, it was better to sacrifice 2 children a year than to be completely eliminated like District 13. Haymitch has lost everyone he loved because of how he won his Games and had to watch approx. 46 other people from his District killed. By the time he gets to Peeta and Katniss he assumes they will die as well. But they are the best candidates he has had in a long time. Unlike most of District 12 they are not starving and weak since Peeta works in a bakery and Katniss illegally hunts for food in the woods. Katniss is kinda like a career since she is skilled in fighting before she gets to the Games. Although not skilled in fighting, Peeta is physically strong, is very likeable and has fantastic people skills. He understands people so well, he can maneuver through and convince people very easily. You see this when he convinces Haymitch to train him, wins over the capitol in the train and interviews and how he convinces the Careers to take him on as part of their alliance, when really his motives should have been obvious. Katniss befriending Rue and showing genuine sorrow and empathy at her death is a rare show of compassion in the Games, same with a love story. Im sure people were not seeing that the previous 73 years and now there was enough discontent that despite their lack of resources, District 11 finally had enough

The Capitol's enjoyment in the Hunger Games is an evolved sentiment that came from a gradual desensitization of death/execution, extreme alienating societal disparities, as well as post-war spite masked as a necessary cultural ceremony to help regulate their 'functioning' society. Besides the entertaining spectacle of the games being glossed up by the game-makers, Panem is largely a post-apocalyptic country that evolved from the ashes of a series of natural disasters and wars that left the human population on earth sparse and overly accustomed to dog-eat-dog survival tactics, as well as the very real understanding of human induced self- devastation. Collins' largest theme in the books relates to famous theories on the political nature of humanity's social nature, and how it should function so as to maintain the human species, but also live happily/freely together. In this series, you'll see that most of the antagonists live out the more pessimistic Thomas Hobbes esque philosophy (man is selfish and power-seeking in nature and is constantly at war with one another) Whereas you'll have other characters like Katniss or Peeta who naturally live out the more grey, or realistically neutral, philosophy like that of Jean Jaques Rousseau ("Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains" i.e. We're born with a blank slate and the freedom to choose, though the world ultimately makes its impressions and influences on us). The people in the Capitol have not only become desensitized to the sadistic suffering, but also likely justify it on a macro-ethical scale. Snow's character embodies this type of justified evil, because he believes the regular ceremonial sacrifice of a few is necessary for society to remember its innate evil, and avoid it as such so as not to fall into ruin. Obviously we know this is BS because it's just a sophisticated reasoning to maintain those at the top of society at the top, and keep those in the fringes of society at the bottom. Thanks for reading, I love this series a little too much haha. Good reaction video!

A few recommendations in no particular order: Galaxy Quest (1999) Primer (2004) Colossus:The Forbin Project (1970) Battle Royal (2000)* Seven Samurai (1954)* The Goonies (1985) The Thing (1982) Office Space (1999) Event Horizon (1997) Super Mario Bros. (1993) Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) *with subtitles I think those are excellent to react to if you haven’t seen them, they’re all fun movies with their own quirks. Tbf the careers were taught to enjoy it and revel in it. They wouldn't be able to function in the games if they felt bad for the tributes from the other districts.

unfortunately an uprising would be basically futile. the reason it hasnt happened yet isnt because most people like the games, its because most of the rich people like the games. this series was created to mirror the injustice in society and how easily it can spiral out of control. without the manpower and resources that the capitol has the lower districts are effectively powerless

I will tell you hun that catching fire. The second movie is a lot more fun than this one. The third book in the series Mockingjay with split into two movies and they are a completely different vibe from the first two and I would recommend a box of tissues for when watching those. Just trust me okay bud Also, I've read the prequel book. The movie is coming out later this year please for the love of God watch that too. It shows basically how a president snow went from a halfway's decent 16-year-old to the monster. He is today cuz as a kid he was actually a decent guy. The tributes were treated so much worse. Back then they were put in a cattle car taken away from their districts like the Jews of the Holocaust and they were dumped in the capital in the goddamn monkey cage I should you not until it was time to fight to the death He's the reason former victors are now forced to be mentors because that gives your people a little something, a little somebody to give them advice and help them get gifts and that was also his idea. There was a lot of things about better in the lives of the tributes that was on him and it's because of a relationship he had in that book. But it also shows when you scorn him. That's how he becomes the monster he is today

The problem hun is that if katniss is hiding too far away from the other tributes then she's really not in the game proper. So it would be kind of like cheating to them. And you know at least not proper sportsmanship or whatever so they got to make it interesting. They got to force her to be closer to the other contestants so there can be some more and not me. Just leaving on a walk. Still listening to your video last week. I did like 80 km walking around. Basically the neighborhood throughout the week. Right now I'm going to the nearby Dollar tree makes me wonder exactly how large some of these arenas really are. This is so much larger than a typical sports arena. I imagine it's like I don't know what the size of a central park, maybe bigger

They are enjoying the killing because that’s what they have been trained for their whole lives and they were told to win (in district 1 and 2). It’s extremely fucked up. They were also manipulated and conditioned so the games would be more entertaining. If none of the kids knew how to fight, there wouldn’t be a „good“ hunger games…

Firstly, I love your Son Oh Gong plushie! I have one too. Secondly, the Hunger Games wouldn't last that long irl? Um, have you watched the nightly news lately? America is the Hunger Games. At least in this dystopian future, only two kids (ages 12-18) get reaped once a year. Here we get 6 five-year-olds killed one day, 2 sisters and one 3-year-old killed the next day, and an 18-year-old killed by cops for shooting 3 older women. Today a 9-year-old was killed by her 4-year-old brother. No one in power cares who's getting taken out each day because they're making that sweet sweet NRA money. Seriously, our Hunger Games are much worse we don't even have hope we'll survive going to the mall or church or work or school every day. But hey, May the odds be ever in your favor. Other than that, loved your reaction.
