Watch as I subject my mother to the first entry of the Hunger Games series. We're introduced to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark as they are inducted into the titular games where they have to battle for survival.
Apologies for the blurriness towards the end. Camera's autofocus kicked in, and we didn't notice until after recording.

They emphasise this so much more in the books but Rues death really awakened things that had been suppressed in people. They were so brainwashed to see death of children as normal, Katniss’s heartbrokenness and respect for the dead woke them up from that.

There is also the fact that she's someone from another district. So it shows that sympathy can be felt between districts, that they can work together. my opinion, anyway :)

Haymitch won his games by luring an opponent to the edge force field, and used the force field to ricochet (Reflect) the weapon back against his opponent, used the Force Field as a weapon. President Snow retaliated by killing his Family and Girl Friend, and ever since as a Mentor, his tributes have all died. Hence turning to Alcohol, and his comment about them facing 'Imminent' death. He has had to endure the pain.

And not only living with the fact that he couldn't help 46 kids from his district, he had to go home to said district, year after year, and year after year, he had to face the loved ones of those tributes. He was reminded again and again of his failure. I don't even live in that world and I want a drink

15:35 It had nothing to do with nerves. If anything, in the book, Katniss was eager to finally get the chance to use a bow. The reason she missed the first shot, was that she was only used to her own, homemade bows, and this new, highly modern bow handled very differently than her own.

you got to feel bad for Cato. They manipulated him into volunteering saying it would bring pride to his district and in reality they are just pawns in their game. At the end of the day, they are all just kids trying to survive. In the books, he was mauled by the dogs for hours until Katniss took pity on him and killed him.

@@musicandmoviefan9217 I didn't feel sorry for him at all either. He wasn't surprised & manipulated into thinking he would bring pride to his district. He knew exactly what he was doing because every year the Capitol sent the Peacekeepers to round everyone up. They forced everyone in each district to go and watch the video about the uprising and the Reaping for that year's 2 kids to go into the Games because they wanted them reminded that they control them, they take their kids as punishment for the uprising all those years before. Districts 1 & 2 being the richest trained their kids as athletes FOR the games... so those kids knew from watching others every year at the drawing. Cato was just one of the psychotic ones who got off on the killing & wanted to be the winner as well. He would have killed his "group" that he started with (those from District 2 and his "girlfriend" from 1) and I don't think it would have bothered him at all to kill them to win at the end. Katniss probably did it also to end them having to hear him screaming for help & mercy at the start & just screaming by the end.

Thrush is from Rue’s district. They were not brother and sister just someone from home and she was so young. Thrush and district 11 appreciated that Katniss putting Rue to rest so sweetly that in the book, district 11 took donations and sent her a thank you gift in the arena of bread I think. Katniss was deeply touched bc she knew they were as poor as her district and they needed every cent but they sent it to her anyways. Also Mom was right about district 12 being in the Appalachia Mountains. Tennessee and up into the Carolina’s. Rue’s district 11 is where I’m living in Atlanta. It was the largest district yet most oppressed. They were crop people and they would be whipped if they were to eat anything even though most of them were starving.

Prim is 12 years old, what is the age minimum for being a tribute, and Rue has the same age. It's not showing in the movie but in the book, Katniss become deaf of one ear after the explosion of the food. There's two theories about " Foxface's " death. 1) she saw Peeta taking the berries and thought they were good and steal it 2) she knew they were poisonous (we can see during the training that she knew a lot about plants) and ate them for commit suicide because she knew she had no chances to survive against someone like Cato or Katniss

One thing they talk about in the book, about one of the reasons why Haymitch had trouble helping tributes. D12 is the poorest district. So the kids had to put their names in to get grain and oil to be able to feed their families. So, most of the kids reaped were kids from the Seam, which is the poorest of the poor. Therefore, they were small, they were weak, they were starving. So no sponsors would "waste" their money to champion them. This is why he says "And know in your heart, there's nothing I can do to save you." However, when he sees that Katniss and Peeta have strength. They have muscle mass. They have drive and courage. And Katniss has arrogance, he starts thinking that maybe, just maybe, one of them stands a chance. Maybe, just maybe, for ONCE, he can bring one back. So that's when he starts taking his work as a mentor seriously.

@@Flix2Us Remember in Catching Fire Katniss and Finnick are tormented by birds called Jabberjays? It doesn't ever go into that so here's another tidbit or two from the books.. Jabberjays are genetically engineered birds that can copy human speech perfectly. During the rebellion, the Capitol sent them out to spy on the rebels because the jays would repeat entire conversations. The rebels figure that out fairly quickly, and used them against the Capitol by talking about "secret plans" and making sure the birds reported back to the Capitol with their "Fake News". (Huh. Didn't think I'd ever be able to use the term "fake news' completely unironically....) so the Capitol abandoned the birds and left them to die. Except they didn't. They mated with female mockingbirds and the offspring, named Mockingjays. cannot repeat actual speech, but pick up melodies instantly. The mockingjay becomes a symbol of perseverance, (and maybe subtle defiance?) something the Capitol never intended to live, but nonetheless thrived.

What did your mom and Donald Sutherland talk about?! He's great in this. Fun fact: his agents give him scripts just to read (not necessarily to be in) because he likes to read. He read this one and liked it so much he started campaigning the director to be Snow. Very lucky that happened. Though the Snow in the books is described as having a lot of plastic surgery and being fake looking (like a lot of the other Capitol residents), I rather like the "evil Santa Claus" version they came up with for the film. The actor who plays Seneca Crane is Wes Bently, best known for "American Beauty". This was Jack Quaid's first movie ever.

Notice how there's still a lot of black in the clothes that the Capitol people is wearing. The fashion designers responsible for this said that, although they wear extravagant clothes with bright colors, their souls are still dark, considering they like to watch kids killing each other. @@Flix2Us no not a change just not well established in the movies I think. In the books Gale is kind of a play boy with many girls in the district. He doesn’t seem to start having romantic feelings towards Katniss till the lead up to the reaping. It’s implied but it read like he was going to say something to her about those feelings when they are in the room saying goodbye before she is taken to the capital. He never actually says it though. She actually had her experience with Peeta and the bread throwing before she met Gale. They dont make that clear in the movie either. In the books Katniss and Peeta are like 12yrs old. Peeta’s mother is abusive towards him. He has been in love with Katniss since he first saw her when they were little at school. His family as merchant Bakers is slightly more well off then Katniss’s family because her dad was a Coal Miner. Katniss’s mom comes from a more wealthy family as well. She married down financially at least. When her dad died in the mine explosion her mother mentally shut down and Katniss was left to bare the burden of taking care of Prim. They were all starving when Peeta noticed her slumped on a tree in the snow. He purposely burned the bread which earned him a hit from his mother. Then he risked even more abuse from her by throwing the bread to Katniss instead of the pigs. Katniss understood it was a kind gesture he was doing for her and it gave her the motivation to not give up. That’s when she started hunting in the woods like her dad taught her and eventually met Gale. After the reaping she is very stand offish towards Peeta because she doesn’t want to get close and care about him if she might have to kill him because of the games or watch him get killed.

While I enjoy the movies I prefer the books & I highly recommend people read them especially if they enjoy the films as there's a lot more detailes about the world & characters that was left out, 'watered down' or changed entirely (like how/why Katniss gets the Mockingjay pin) in the movies Vs the books. I can understand that this is partly due to time/cost/technology constraints (as the first movie came out in the mid 200's & it didn't have the biggest budget) but I think it was also because the director didn't want to miss out on sales by making the story R-rated & wanted to focus more on the obvious action instead of showing the full extent of the characters truma (which I get is hard to show in films when a lot of it is internal but still). This means whole backstories for important characters never get shown (eg. what happend in Haymitch's games), some really interesting characters never even get introduced & some scenes just couldn't convey the true horror they were meant to (eg. the dogs near the end of this movie look like they share the dead tributes DNA, in the book, & Katniss + Peeta have to listen to Cato being mauled at for a whole night before she's able to finally mercy shoot him). The other reason though is because of how they portray Peeta (especially in the 1st movie). Now no hate to Josh Hutchinson (even if he, along with J-Law, wasn't really the correct age for the role) but book Peeta comes across much more useful/competent then they they show him to be in the movies. I think it's due to a mix of him being much kinder & emotionally intelligent than a lot of other male love intrests at the time the movies were coming out & Katniss not being as "traditionally girly" as some young female leads so I think the movie makers unfortunately viwed Peeta as the "weaker" part of the duo & kind of overdid Katniss's "GirlBoss" vibes to the point that she barley seems intrested in Peeta in many of the scenes when she really isn't like that in the books (just emotionally stunted/introverted/confused due to truma). Thankfully this dose get better in the other movies but none of them still do these characters complete justice, in my opinion, & definitely don't convey the true depths of the relationship the two share in the books. An example of this is the flashback with the bread - in the book Peeta & Katniss are supposed to be 11, it was shortly after her dad died & her mum was bassically catatonic so her & Prim where left to almost starve to death in secret after the "compensation" grain from the Capitol ran out because Katniss didn't want her & Prim to be put in the local children's home (the kids there were always covered in bruises) but she wasn't old enough for her name to be put in the reaping bowl yet so there wasn't any way for her to get extra food from the Capitol, she was too scared to enter the woods without her dad which meant she couldn't hunt & she wasn't friends with Gale yet, this went on till one rainy night Katniss got so desperate she tried looking for food in the bins outside the bakery but Peeta's mum stopped her & Katniss ended up under a tree just waiting to die & that's when she heard the baker's wife yelling at someone for burning some bread, telling them to feed it to the pigs as no one worth selling it to would buy it now then Peeta came out & waited till his mum wasn't paying attention before he quickly threw some bread to her, which actually managed to help her & her family keep going (the loves were thick with seads & nuts inside, meaning they were expensive, not just the run of mill stuff with little nutrients) until she finally got the courage to start entering the woods again but Katniss says that when she saw Peeta again at school he's eye was swollen from he's mum beating him for burning the bread & she wanted to thank him for helping her but never did because they're both awkward/traumatised kids that run in different social circles (Katniss comes from the "lower" class Seam part of town whereas Peeta's from the slightly "higher" class Merchant part of town) so during thier 'your more likely to win than I am' talk in the Capitol Katniss is really suprised when she starts blurting out how good at wrestling he was at school as she hadn't realised until then how much she'd actually been paying attention to him all these years & when Peeta goes on he's rant about how he's mother views Katniss as a survivor & she stops him by pointing out 'only because someone helped me'.

I always thought that her name was spelled Roux like the cooking procedure. You all have already watched the " Dirty Dozen ". Well, the second movie that I saw Donald Southerland is " Kelly's Heroes ". He does not play a villain in this movie.

15:35 "Nerves are getting to her" Wrong. She's only ever used her own bow and each bow is different. Just like each car breaks a little differently. The amazing part is that she only needed one shot on a new bow to adjust and be perfect on her second shot. The sight is probably off a bit. She's got nerves of steel in this scene.

Just an 8 month later Heads Up: No need to hold your mom's hand and walk her through it while watching movies you've seen. No one held ours when we watched for the first time.

- revisit- Re the mockingjay pin.....aside from the scene where Gale scares off the deer, this is the main thing that ticked me off about the movie.....it wasn't supposed to be a bit of yellow colored metal (whatever that was, I'm guaranteeing it wasn't real gold like in the books....and then not only do they leave out the somewhat important backstory, Katniss tries to pass it off as like a talisman to "protect" Prim?? That just....never made any sense whatsoever, and makes the whole thing kind of pointless..... KATNISS: Here, I got you this cheap looking brass bird pin thingie, and as long as you have it, nothing bad will happen to you. EFFIE: Primrose Everdeen! KATNISS: ..................shit.
