I have owned the Hungry Bin worm farm for seven months now and have found it to be quite a good worm farm overall.
However, I do feel that it could be improved or even a few small versions made of it.
My worms are quite happy in the unit. They are multiplying, it creates castings and I am able to get the liquid down below every day.
If you have been using the Hungry Bin too I would really like to hear your thoughts below.
If you would like to learn more from me about worm farming and organic gardening join my free educational newsletter here www.martysgarden.com.au

I've relocated my Hungry bin from SA to Vic and had to restart it, I'm 3 months in and have vinegar flies, whats best to get rid of them. I may be over feeding them as my population is a lot smaller they are breeding so hopefully that will balance out soon.

Hi Leslie, you will be fine as long as the bedding is a well finished compost or coco peat that doesn't get warm while breaking down. Mine has done a good job for what i wanted. Thanks for watching.

I made my own smaller version by nesting plastic plant pots, wide shallow pots are best. I cut 95% of the bottom out of the top pot leaving a small lip, then nest it on top of the second pot that's slightly smaller, and use a saucer as a top with a couple of holes to let rainwater and air in. Then made a mesh platform for it to sit on and a leachate tray that slides in underneath.

Love to see all those worms! Thanks for this review, useful information & tips! It does look to be kind of inconvenient if you have to get down there and fuss with it. I do also wonder about the airflow. Maybe one day I'll try a flow through. Your experiment with the bark gives me some ideas!

That hungry bin really looks like it's coming along nicely now. The base does look like a bit of a problem for those who are not fully fit or have trouble getting down low but it seems a nice sized unit. I'll stick to my tote bins though as I'm a cheapskate, err I mean, on a budget. 😊 The video production values keep stepping up - nice job Marty and Karin.

I got the hungry bin after watching your video. I like it. No problem getting the bottom off and on. Actually my wife uses it and has no problem with the bottom, does it herself and commented to me it was very easy. The only issue seems to be very wet castings, not a lot of “pee” and having to sift through the castings to get the worms that fall into it. Still it’s way less sifting than we used to do. Any suggestions how to get castings less wet, less worms in the castings and why it isn’t peeing? We make sure each time we remove castings to make sure the drain isn’t plugged up.

I know this is an older video, but I wanted to leave a comment and question to support your channel. Now, I have had a few harvests from my bin, and so far I really like it. I agree with you, I wish there was an easier way to harvest without it being so low to the ground! Even on a slightly elevated platform, it's cumbersome and placed too high it can be difficult to get to the top of, so no real good solution yet. I keep my worm bin inside as I live in a very cold environment. I recently had a major issue with the filter being clogged for an unknown period of time, and that leads me to my question. I recently went to clean out the last of the old bedding I was replacing, which had gone anaerobic from a bad batch of food and overfeeding. I noticed that the "sour bin" smell I had was not getting better despite replacing the material and in fact was getting worse, and so I took the bottom off and opened the filter to find a large collection of mold. Despite the awful smell and the poor environment, I still found a few worms surprisingly! Since cleaning the filter, I have had zero problems with the bins smell, and things are improving as expected. Have you had any issues with the filter? Do you have any advise on preventing it from getting clogged? I will be washing it each and every time that I harvest from now on to ensure it remains "clean", but if there is perhaps something you could recommend to improve the drainage properties of the filter system without compromising the integrity of the bin? Cheers!

I have 2 hungry bins already and would like more and absolutely love them. Mine are inside as it gets pretty hot up here in Townsville. I have no problem moving them around as they got wheels. Some more holes and maybe a smaller version too would be great though. Marty do you have a black soldier fly larvae bin for composting what you cant put in your worm farms?

I know this was posted about a year ago but, im just getting into farming and am looking at the hungry bin to start out with on a smaller scale and slowly building up. Im curious however, I see you dumping the worm tea on top of the pile is there a specific reason for that? why dont you use the worm tea in a spray bottle to feed your veg?
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 3 года назад
Hi Jacob, I do both, feed the plants and keep the bacteria and nitrogen in the system. You should really check out the Worm Wranglers members area Jacob. It's worth every penny and is super cheap for what you get. I have a video coming out tomorrow explaining it more. Keep an eye out for it.😀 Hopefully, see you in there as a member,,you get me a coach too!

Does the hungry bin produce worm tea or worm leachate ? Worm tea being safe to use on edible veggie gardens while the leachate is not. Thanks for the awesome vids on the hungry bin, very helpful.
@martysgarden

It's more of a leachate this one, but when you do a full flush with water it's okay on edibles.

Had hungry bin 3 months, checked the castings tray and the bottom 12inches of compost fell out and no castings. Am I checking it too early and should there be compost in my casting tray? My hungry bin isn't filled to the top. I add our household waste to it once a week, plus there is old leaves, and old grass clippings in it.

Maybe elevate the hungry bin, put some bricks, bessa or blocks of wood to give it an extra 6-12 inches in height.
@martysgarden

Yes, I though about George. I have quite a few escapees from down there. That's why you see all the mulch around below the tray. It's a mulch trap to help escapees survive and move into the garden beds

Add a few litres of water into the farm regularly, every week, it will help with the compaction toward the bottom and the worms will migrate upwards to where there's more air and food.
