The reason Ramius was defecting was explained much better in the book (Tom Clancy's best). Ramius blamed the Soviet government for his wife's death, she had appendicitus (I think), the doctor who operated on her was drunk and killed her, the doctor was not punished for this because he was the son of a party bigwig. The rest of the officers had also seen far too much corruption in the government (authoritarianism breeds corruption) and Ramius collected officers he knew had beefs with the government for his crew. I'm sorry you didn't like it, I do but we all have different tastes and I still appreciated your reaction.

The reasons why you thought the movie was "flat" are the very reasons why the movie is so great. No overacting. No bullshit drama. It is realistic cold war politics.
@dougearnest7590

C'mon man, admit it - It would have been a much better movie if Ryan had an affair with Ramius' wife, who was killed while trying to elude the KGB on her return home from their last secret liaison. Ramius wouldn't know the identity of her lover, but swore revenge, determined to find out who he was. As he ordered Ryan to turn the Red October toward the incoming Soviet torpedo, it hit him. He'd seen his wife reading the English language copy of Ryan's book on Halsey - not realizing she spoke English - which Ryan taught her while they were in bed together. Shortly thereafter, Ryan and Ramius must don scuba gear and work together to disable the Konavalov's propeller. Ryan almost dies in the process, but Ramius puts his personal animosity aside to save him for the sake of the mission. Meanwhile, Ryan's own wife was anxiously awaiting Admiral Greer's "layover" in London while back en route to Washington DC, which makes her lesbian lover jealous - but they both know it's only temporary and true love will win out in the end. There is also some foreshadowing of events which will take place in the next Jack Ryan movie: In the final scene, we learn the teddy bear is a KGB plant.

This film may not be as "exciting" for some younger film goers, but I really enjoyed the slow build and steady pace. It gave the film so much more atmosphere and a sense of adventure than say "Crimson Tide" where all they did was go around shouting the entire movie.

To "defect" is to go over to the "other side". In a sense you surrender to your enemy and then provide them with information, etc.
@dougearnest7590
@dougearnest7590 Месяц назад
It sounds like you're thinking "defect" means flawed, but in this case to "defect" means to leave one country and seek political asylum in another. It's the same use of the word if you left one company and went to work for the competition. (Edit, I typed that a few seconds too soon - it's obvious you know what it means.) It's rare and interesting to see a reactor saying they didn't like a movie, as if they have to keep their fans happy by liking what they like. So while I disagree (I thought it was a great movie - but them I'm also a Cold War Navy guy who's into Cold War spycraft), I respect your honesty. I don't see how they could have rushed any of the story any faster than they did without losing everyone, and there was nothing that could have been left out. Now if you can just start disliking the movies I dislike ... 😎

Taken from a Tom Clancy novel, a Jack Ryan book and one of about 3 Jack Ryan movies. I'm surprised you didn't like it as Clancy was king of the techno-thrillers for several decades and after Sean Connery joined the cast almost everyone in Hollywood fought to get a part of the movie. The actor that played the Captain of the Dallas actually spent time on a real Los Angeles Class submarine learning from a real Naval Ship Captain. Sam Neil (Jurassic Park) who played the Russian XO has 4th Stage Cancer and has accepted his fate...

I've now seen a number of younger reactors who grew up after the cold war not understanding or enjoying this movie. The Hunt for Red October does an excellent job of portraying cold war politics and submarine warfare. The movie didn't need to provide more explanation of the context and motivations when it was released in 1990, but perhaps it does today.

BTW, I love the Hunt for Red October. This movie also gave me a first time watching experience that I'll never forget. I think that may be part of her issue of enjoying the movie. I'm part of the tail end of Gen X, my father served during the Cold War and I agree growing up or being around during the Cold War, makes this so much more suspenseful. @@teddyj5187 Welcome to the watch list. But seriously, last time I checked the "worm drive" was a thing which existed in the lab, but still wasn't practical for submarines because it requires a huge amount of electricity, which itself produces more noise than desired. The story is that when the book came out the author got a visit from some government guys wanting to know how he knew so much about how all this classified stuff works. He had to prove that it was all available in "open" sources (as opposed to classified sources he wasn't supposed to have access to). I was told this by a former submariner who had gotten commissioned into another branch, and getting the story right wasn't exactly his strong point.

Surprisingly to some, the vast majority of Oceans' floors are not precisely maps; even less named. So it was very easy for the author to dream up a geological formation in the Atlantic that suited his story: A deep trench between two impressive underwater mountains, which he name Thor's Twins; probably because he thought it sounded imposing and/or cool!_*

The novel and this movie were more about the times, the devices, and humans operating as though they were devices rather than the persons. The Cold War was that kind of thing, with a real effort by both sides to remove personality from the prosecution of war, particularly nuclear war. The challenge of this story was for the American side to see Ramius as a _person_ rather than as a cog in a machine, and that required Americans to see themselves as persons more than cogs in their own machine.

In reality, missile submarines were never thought of as first strike weapons since they had land based missiles. Flying time of a missile launched from land between USSR and USA is so short that shortening the distance with submarines posed no significant advantage. Missile submarines were always second strike weapons. They're supposed to hide in the depth (the Soviets were less successful in that compared to NATO) so that you do not know where to shoot if you DO a first strike. So the subs survive and can strike back.

GABBY - READ THIS: This movie was very meaningful when it came out, because the globally lethal Cold War had ended so very recently and people knew how dangerous it was to most of the people on our planet. The danger of that time is not so well understood now, unlike the German Nazism of the 1940s, which we continue to understand to this day. In the story, the point of creating the Red October super submarine was to re-do the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, but this time to have the Russians win. Hypothetically speaking, if you knew as little about Nazism as you do about the mutually-assured-destruction Cold War, then the movie Casablanca would also not be particularly meaningful to you. (Why were people so keen to flee the Nazis? What does it matter?) At a moment when the 1962 negotiations were failing, President Kennedy told his wife to take the kids and go to a far away safe place. But she refused. She said she couldn't live without him. She told him that if the worse came to worst, she and the kids would join him on the south lawn of the White House, and they would all watch together as the Russian missiles came in and destroyed the entire world that they knew. This was serious fucking shit. And I am from that era. GABBY: You have GOT to see the brilliant movie FAIL SAFE starring Henry Fonda. It is a kind of "Part 2" of the real life Cuban Missile Crisis. It is directed by Sidney Lumet, who brought us 12 Angry Men. And once again, in this film Henry Fonda asks the pivotal question "IS it possible? COULD IT have happened?" Also consider seeing Thirteen Days, a docu-drama of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

If you didn't care for this movie, you're going to get a lot more of the same in Das Boot, but in much more intense doses. I think if you mentally prepare for an interesting ride up front, you'll be better able to enjoy the movie. It isn't a ride you watch, it's a ride you take. In short: Das Boot is to Hunt for Red October as The Pacific is to Band of Brothers.

Great observation, the movie is flat. Tension builds only to be quickly resolved. We have the mystery of the sub doors, quickly solved. We have the mystery of Ramius' intentions, quickly solved. Will the sub captain follow orders to fire on the Red October... no. Then all we're left watching how it all plays out. This is pretty typical of Clancy's early writing and the other Jack Ryan movies (starring Harrison Ford in the role) are better.
@Randsurfer
@Randsurfer Месяц назад
The sub doors aren't meant to be a mystery. Ramius' intentions are not meant to be a mystery. "How it all plays out" is the entire point and that is a mystery up until the last sub is sunk. The other point is the cold blooded calculations that are involved in these cold war games and the kind of people that can perform those cold blooded calculations.

The Soviet Unions Typhoon Class submarine is the largest submarines ever made by man, only 7 of them were made by the Soviet Union, today only 1 is still active, as far as their nuclear armament is concerned, each one is comparable to the U.S. Ohio class submarines, of which the U.S. has built and is still in active service, however the Typhoon class is actually shorter than the Ohio class, BUT it is significantly thicker top to bottom than the Ohio class and it is nearly 30 feet WIDER than the Ohio class and weighs 3 times as much as the Ohio class.

In regards to comments disagreeing with not liking/vibing with the film: I think those kind comments miss out on one of the things that (at least to me) makes reaction channels interesting. I never saw the point of reaction channels but having now watched some I really enjoy seeing how someone who's different to me and has different tastes sees the world. (Yes I understand it's a little ironic for me to complain about those commentators having a different view to me when my point is that we shouldn't complain about people having different views 😛. I get that!) My point is I love Hunt for Red October, for me it's one of the best films ever made, but I already have that opinion. Watching someone else watch it from a different perspective is interesting because it's a rare opportunity to listen to and understand someone with a completely different view to me. This film and the original Tom Clancy novel were INSPIRED by true events of various Russian naval vessels and a submarine crew defecting to the west during the Cold War. The high tech sub, The Red October, was based on submarine propulsion technology that had been researched, but I don't believe ever implemented. The sub interiors were created to look cool, but the set designers got so much correct in comparison to real life submarines, the U.S. Navy wondered where the filmmakers got their information from.
@timothyhedrick5295
@timothyhedrick5295 Месяц назад
@12:54 No. by "defect" they mean seek asylum in the US and turn the submarine over to the US military. Prior soviet aircraft pilots have done this with fighters before as well. I don't think a US pilot has ever defected in the opposite direction with an aircraft or naval vessel but on occasion soldiers have (generally suffering legal issues or emotional issues). I loved this film but maybe that's because I read the original Tom Clancy novel it is based on. I actually have a t-shirt that references the movie asking for "One Ping Only Vasily." If you want a submarine movie that is VERY intense, try "Crimson Tide" with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman.

Das Boot is one of those movies that as you're watching it you forget it's in a language you don't speak - it's that good.

I'm sorry this film didn't click with you. I could see (because I spent much of the time just gazing at your beautiful face) that you were gradually losing interest. Maybe it's too much of a "guy" film? I don't know. I always enjoy watching the story play out and feeling the tension rise. Thanks for your gentle reaction that turns away wrath. :)

IMO, the new Jack Ryan shows are terrible- over dramatized, not smart, no interesting technical details-the technical aspects of the film, while not exciting in the modern movie goer sense, are brilliant to those that enjoy technical details in a movie- something missing for a decade or two.

It's boring to you because you know nothing about naval operations. I've played navel simulators and can follow most of the jargon. This movie had me on the edge of my seat in the 90s

I am sorry you didn't like this film. One cannot like every movie that one sees. At least you are honest, and that is a good thing. There are a series of Jack Ryan films. Alec Baldwin didn't return to the role for the next one, although James Earl Jones did. In order: - Patriot Games - Harrison Ford takes on the role of Jack Ryan, and the story revolves around the IRA (Irish Republican Army). It co-stars Sean Bean, Samuel L. Jackson, Polly Walker (Bridgerton), and Richard Harris (Professor Dumbledore #1 in the first 2 Harry Potter films). - Clear and Present Danger - Ford returns and must deal with the drug cartels and a black operation to stop them. Willem Dafoe co-stars. - The Sum of All Fears - Ben Affleck tries his hand at Ryan with Morgan Freeman co-starring. This film was not very good, and it tanked the franchise for a good 10 years. - Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - Chris Pine stars as Ryan, and it's a re-boot. The story is an original, not based on any Tom Clancy novel. How Ryan came to the CIA, etc. Co-stars Kevin Costner, Keira Knightly, and Kenneth Branagh (who plays the villain and directed the film). Then...you were right... Jack Ryan - John Krasinski as Ryan. I saw the first three seasons and liked it. I am still waiting to see the fourth. I suggest giving Patriot Games a try. I love both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger...and would loved to have seen Harrison Ford continue on as Ryan.

8:08 This is the difference between men and women. Your superior knows you are the sh*t, no one else can give this briefing. Affirmed for him. I'm in my zone. Of course rattling. Don't f**k up. Women: How can you dump it on this poor man this late. Girl, this is his oxygen

I agree, this movie is fantastic! However, as a woman I have to say, this is not more of a dude movie. It's an incredible action and suspense movie and you can never go wrong with a movie with Sean Connery and James Earl Jones in it!

I guess this movie was too "high brow " for you. Stick with the stupider stuff. It suits you better. Kind of like how you abandoned the show The Pacific because it was not fluffy enough for you. This was a great movie with terrific tension and build up.
