One of the most haunting parts of the game for me is overhearing Gehrman crying out to Laurence in his sleep--he's grown old inside this Hunter's Dream, he can't see beyond it (both physically and metaphorically, what with the Doll and the perfect replica of the old workshop), and he just wants *out.* But he can never leave. What he probably once regarded as a comfort and a reminder of his glory days is now a prison. Not just for him or even our Hunter, but for all of Yharnam as long as the Hunt goes on.

I do want to point out- the blood does actually heal alilements, and might I say, ALL of them. It's important to understand because it's what gives the church its power and raises Yaharnam above everything. However, the inintended consequences of the beast plauge don't show until it is far too late.

To be about as fair to The Healing Church as they probably barely deserve, the blood does seem to be a genuine panacea except the beast transformation. Even the Good Hunter you play as came for-and received that cure, after all.

It should be noted that the dream world itself is very peaceful and kind of the inverse of Yarhnam. There are no monsters, and rather than being crowded by buildings on all sides, there's just a wide open sort of sea with distant pillars or trees (and on that point, the gods of bloodborne are always found near large bodies of water, Rom in the lake and Kos by the sea, they are the places where insight and truth are found.)

And thus comes the mingling question in the back of your mind every time you play a Soulsborne game “Am I ending the cycle or am I just another footnote in the cycle?”

Hunters either become the beast or live long enough to go insane

Imagine your favorite lore storytellers as a group of NPCs. Their abilities allow them to know tales that under normal circumstances no one should know but has a drawback that leaves them unable to act on said knowledge. So they tell Player, with the hope that they'll set things right, and give the unfinished stories a proper end.

Something of note that is terrifying in context, Gehrman is the first hunter, meaning when he started this he probably wasn't all that much older than Lady Maria, he's been at this so long he's become elderly, if that is due to age and not because of the parasitism of the Moon Presence. Gehrman lost the best years of his life because he truly believed he was doing what was best, and even now, with all of the anguish it brings him, he would rather suffer alone than have someone else have to shoulder his burden. Also something to note about the old ones, is that in lore they are described as sympathetic in nature, which is why they created the hunters nightmare, the people of the fishing hamlet cried out in hopes that their destroyers would be punished, and the gods answered with a nightmare. Perhaps, in its own twisted way, this "dream" is the product of the Moon Presence feeling some level of sympathy for the hunters

I find it interresting that we, as players, never quite know what the eldritch knowledges and truths that are so disturbing to the characters are.

Honestly there aren't enough videos like this for soulsborn games: where it gives a run down for how messed up the world is before actually including you, the player, as a bringer of change.

Now this is all cool and great, but what's intro song to the bloodborne series

Kudos for the succinct snippets of Bloodborne lore: exciting and easy to digest. The only misgiving I have is the reason why Gehrman summoned the moon presence. I believe it was a way out of the old hunter’s nightmare which was a curse placed on all the old hunters by Kos. Gehrman was hoping Maria and Laurence would be able to make it out with him but to no avail. And the price for escape from that nightmare was a much more serene, idyllic place devoid of the recurring agony of their past lives. Also, Gehrman was to serve as a steward for new hunters in service to the Moon Presence. When a hunter slaughters enough beasts, the moon presence rewards them with strength for blood echoes. At the very end, Gehrman is supposed to harvest (with a scythe of all things) those blood echoes for the Moon Presence by beheading us. If we choose to ingest umbilical cords, our blood is in a sense, tainted with divine insight and the Moon Presence sees us as a threat and attempts to kill us. Bloodborne appears to be an allegorical battle between our corporeal body (blood echoes, beast-hood, Moon Presence) and consciousness (insight, frenzy, Formless Oedon). Mensis rituals and audience with Oedon are interfering with the Moon Presence’ ability to garner blood echoes. Oedon might thrive on insight the same way the Moon Presence craves blood. For instance, in the Nightmare of Mensis, we see a physical, congealed representation of all that insight: the Brain of Mensis, a hideous, amalgam of brains and eyes. Even as I’m typing this out, the theory seems to be riddled with holes: for instance, why are all the Moon Caryll runes found in this nightmare or the Hypogean jail (close to where the Mensis ritual started)? Mensis rituals should be related to the Moon Presence not Oedon. Were the umbilical cords placed by Oedon as a poison pill to fight off the Moon Presence? Anyways, I’m even more confused than when I started 😂

With SF6 and Tekken 8 on the horizon, I'd LOVE to see you cover those and MK in particular. I think characters like Cammy, Juri, Ken, Scorpion, Kung Lao, Kazuya, and King would be awesome to cover.

You keep saying the unnamed god/Great One made the pact with them, but thanks to the Doll we know their name is Flora of the Moon, of the Dream. We can hear her pray to Flora at the graves sometimes, in particular the grave you use to teleport to the Hunter's Nightmare.

One note: I'm pretty sure that, at least for the Hunt that takes place during this cycle of the game, you are the only Hunter who is of the Hunter's dream. At least three female characters comment on how your character "smells". Arianna notes that your scent is unique, indicating that other hunters in the city are simply mundane humans, while the fake Iosefka and Annalise both identify your scent as being tied to the moon. The gattling gun hunter in Old Yharnum was previously a Hunter of the Dream, but he accepted Gehrman's offer from the sound of his dialogue.

While I'm sure it wasn't *originally* intentional, the Hunter's Dream existing in an endless indistinct void dotted with pillars is eerily similar to the Elden Beast arena in Elden Ring. I wonder... do the stoney columns turn into trees if you go far enough out...?
