The door behind the cleric beast that's impossible to open is also a good introduction to the theme of having no idea wtf is going on.

The cleric beast is one of the most lore packed enemies, and its the first boss.

I like the fight clip, it makes it look like the battle was under control, instead of the desperate "Quick, throw Molotovs at it" debacle it actually was.

It's also interesting to note that the cleric beast serves as an introduction to Laurence's bossfight later in the nightmare, with Laurence being the complete version of the fight, having three phases and the full moveset made for the model of the cleric beast.

One little detail: The item that the beast drop suggest it wasn't a cleric of the healing church but a Hunter of the Healing church. More specifically, one that used to work under Ludwig's orders.

My pet theory about the nail is that, while feeling the effects of the transformation, the cleric probably thought about bloodletting themselves to alleviate the effects of beasthood, because beastblood creeps up from the right leg, as it was believed, right?

I notice the nail is in the same placement as the belts the old hunters used to stop beasthood creeping up their legs. Perhaps, similar to how iron (such as nails) is used to ward off evil and spirits in celtic folklore, iron was thought to ward of beasts. And so, in their desperation, this cleric tried to stop their transformation by stabbing nails into their right thigh.

I have made inhuman noises as soon as I saw "Cleric Beast" in the title, so happy you're finally making Bloodborne analysis !

This was the first video to show up on my homepage and it immediately grabbed my attention from a DIFFERENT video I was going to watch. No hesitation, just "OH SKYEN OUT HERE WITH THE SHORTS? I GOTTA GO"

You see many beasts crucified throughout Yharnam and old Yharnam. I would speculate that the nails are a result of a failed crucifixion attempt.

Aah cleric beast. I do remember struggling with them and my brother telling me they were optional... felt like a clown. It was my first soulsborne too. Good times.

It reminds me a lot of the Wendigo, indeed. The starved look really sells this idea for me.

I had never noticed the nail in his leg before. I like the first theory, that he blindly grabbed for a blood vial and, in his madness, stabbed himself. As a very aggressive BB player, panic Vials are a real thing lol.

I think the cleric beast screech on the ladder near Gilbert is one of the most gripping sound ques in gaming. It told me so many things all at once, one of which that I would love this game.

Man I can't wait for Skyen to get into DS3 whenever that happens

Also, I find it funny how explicitly it echoes Manus from DS1:Artorias of the Abyss. The elongated left arm, the antlers, the carnivorous jaws, the idea that this thing might have been humanoid at some point. To me this looks like an attempt to scare the Player, like "What, I'm supposed to fight Manus ALREADY?!?", but its also signaling another thing: in echoing Manus, Bloodborne reminds the Player of Oolacile, of Humanity going too far and threatening/provoking the Gods.

To me, this is the best first boss in gaming history. With little the player knows about the lore at this point, we know enough to feel a bit sorry for the thing and still be extremely creeped out by the proportions the beasts can have. The MUSIC (a masterpeice), fits perfectly the setup, the choir gives at a nod to the whole corrupted church situation + adds to the melancholy. The wild patterns educate us about what we are going to deal with as the game progresses and the figure describes visually exactly what the beast can do. +the SCREAM before the battle as a foreshadowning... the sound it makes add a lot to the sad end of the cleric in a mix of desperation, anger and pure wildness. Nothing will EVER top this experience and dread, I was legitimately in fight or flight mode while fighting it for the first time, that was incredible.

One thing I noticed is that Cleric Beast, alongside Manus, both move almost like gorillas, using their much shorter feet before using their big strong arm to aid in further. While I believe Gorilla can also move like quadrupeds, here that can’t be done because of the weaker right arm. It’s interesting to see a reversion to a form of movement like one of our closer genetic relatives

Hey big fan, just want to let you know the bring you mentioned that is resembled is sacred to the Algonquin people and it is disrespectful to mention it by name.

One thing that stands out to me the most about this boss is its lack of a fancy name or title, since I always had the impression that the name "Cleric Beast" could have been used as the name for regular enemies you'd encounter across the game. Though it could be chalked up to me overthinking things, this led me to believe that we could have encountered more Cleric Beasts like it in later stages of the game, showing how the aftermath of blood usage among members of the Church has taken its toll on a majority of the organization, with the fights against them showing players have improved since the beginning of the game, kinda like the Warden of the Silent Sorrow in Blasphemous.

So close to being a good ending statement. Pregnant with questions yet barren/sterile/infertile of answers would've hit better. Love your content and the writing!

I want just want to say and cope here. I got my ass handled to this boss in my first time playing this. Like what & or 9 tries and I couldn’t kill him. Made excuses on how maybe I’m just very tired since this game was finished downloading at what around 10 pm, but excuses are excuses and just sucked. So I rested and came back to make a new character and picked another weapon which was the axe. Went in there nervous and so used molitoves to see if that worked and surprise I finally know it’s weakness. But even though I beat JT afterwards I still think that I still suck at the game and this memory of my ass getting whooped by basically the first boss Evers will be engraved in my mind forever. Sometimes I’ve think back at the moment where I first encountered him and should’ve just grinned for souls and came back stronger than quitting and making a new character because I thought that the weapon I had which was the threaded cane was very weak.

The famous word "Wendigo" is usually forbidden by Ojibwe Midewiwin language to be spoken of outside of the season of Winter when such spirits are frozen. I love your content but hate hearing that word as it's quite dangerous to hear, let alone speak. Love your content as always.
