As somebody who spends their life playing whistle let me say to anyone viewing this video this is unreal playing - tunes that probably aren't at all suited to flute but sounds effortless
Agreed. I'm still new to whistle but have years of backgrounds in all sorts of music and instruments and although I've picked it up relatively quickly, things like some of the fingering for jumping notes and ornaments in fast pieces are nothing to scoff at
@@CalumStewartMusic You're incredible. Found you during a recent re-attempt at learning whistle/actual flute this time and stumbled onto you. Literally can't get enough of anything you do on pipes/flute/anything.
Callum, you must be, hands down, the most shocking young flutist/uilleann piper in celtic music! Your style is fresh, yet with a trad sound. Keep rocking!
Yeah the basic tunes are sometimes written, but mostly learned by ear. Then the variations / grace notes etc, usually comes in the moment! Best wishes for now, Calum
Splendid set, and great skills from the band. I'm surprised how much intensity the double bass adds to the overall feeling of the music. Keep it going !
Hey Javi, thats high praise indeed, thank you! I had fun doing my wee bit on the flute for a few years, but the flute world is in very good hands without me... There are loads of fantastic Scottish flute players around; check out Sarah Markey, Hamish Napier, Kenny Hadden, James Duncan MacKenzie, David Foley, to name but a few! Hope alls well and it would be great to have a tune together soon! Best wishes, Calum
Hey Calum, nice to hear from you and hope you are doing ok during these crazy times. I guess you probably had to cancel many gigs etc. Let’s hope it’ll all finish soon. I now live in Ireland and I’d love to meet for a tune or two if you come over here at some point.
Oh. My. God. Pure magic!! I've been wanting to see a live performance of the Hurricane for ages! It's one of my absolute faves'! You guys are the best. And the rockstars in my world. 😉 Looking very much forward to the Scandinavian tour, which will include Sweden I hope 😄 All the best!
I want to thank you for the free downloads of your music you have provided on your website and hope that you will post the score to this piece someday. The 1st movement of the piece is one of my favorite pieces of music and I would love to play it.
I don't know how you do it man! Insane breath control, I can get through the A part of a good reel on my flute and I'm pulling the inhaler out lol. First class from all of you :)
Hi Glean, thanks for your comments! It is indeed Heikki Bourgault on guitar, a fantastic musician indeed. We have taken separate paths for the moment, but I'm sure one day we'll play together again! Yann Le Bozec on the bass! Cheers, Calum
@@CalumStewartMusic Thank you for the response Calum. You're the best thing that has happened to celtic music. The thing with Heikki is that he is up to speed with your music. Be it pipes or flute. Wish you all the best!
I keep coming back to this outstanding performance. It reminds me I should work on that Hurricane haha, the strathspey and the first reel are mastered but that last Skinner tune is ... well I would need Calum's hands X) If anyone need the sheets I wrote it down here: thesession.org/members/95934/sets/26403
@D.R. Fair play for the notating, thank you! Thanks also for your kind words! It was a really memorable concert with the guys, and I'm glad we've got a wee souvenir of the moment! All best wishes, Calum
@@CalumStewartMusic Indeed, I'd have love to be in the audience! Btw, are you planning to put Hunter's Moon on digital platforms? (since both your albums with Heikki are out of stock saddly) And also, coming in Britanny in 2 weeks, do you know if there will be some concerts/fest noz/sessions allowed or the pandemic makes it all impossible? I miss playing with people ... Cheers, Damien
Damien! Thank you for all the notating you do. Almost every time I hear something awesome on youtube video stumbling and go "I wonder if someone notated this" I end up landing on your version.
Oh my god, this is just AWESOME!!! I love your style of music, how it combines traditions and the modern spirit. What kind of whistle are you playing in this video Calum?
I absolutely love the first tune, does anyone know the name? The closest I've found is The Brown-Sailed Boat, but other versions I've found don't quite sound the same Edit: found it, it's Stoidhle Neill Ghobha
Hi TRAD, On the flute, it was a simple DPA microphone positioned close to the embouchure. On the guitar (Heikki), it was possibly a DPA also, but a different model specific to guitar. Hope that helps. Best wishes, Calum
Dear Calum, I am impressed by your work and thanks to you I have discovered the wooden flute which I am currently learning. I would like to know if it is possible to download or buy the score of "The Hurricane"?
Many thanks for your message Ludovic! I do have scores of my own compositions yes; melody + chords (for accompaniment instruments). This particular piece however (2 traditional tunes then a James Scott Skinner tune), I havnt notated sorry! If I can be of assistance for scores of my own tunes, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Best wishes, Calum
@@CalumStewartMusic Thank you for your answer and your help :-) I found the score of « the Hurricane » (James Scott Skinner) on the web. I also downloaded your compositions from your website (thanks for making them available)! Best wishes, Ludovic
