Hey, can i ask you how you worked at a zoo? i'm at college rn, and for the longest time i've wanted to do some volunteering at a zoo like that but idk where to start. where do i find this sort of work? are there specific requirements they need?
I did zoo and wildlife work for years..never worked with hyenas but went for a job at a private UK collection..had spotted and the v rare brown hyenas..got few feet away from both..tierpark in Germany had Striped, brown and spotted years ago..only missing the Aardwolf
This is actually a tradition that goes back over 400 years. The people believed that the hyenas could get rid of all the bad spirits that roam the streets. When the hyenas get into the city walls, their behavior changes. Making the, kind to the men in the city,
Still stupid tho. It’s already been proven to show that animals as pristine people with food is a dangerous thing. One day these hyenas are going to come looking for food but maybe all they will find are a couple kids and then what will they do?
@@jeremyj5932feeding wild animals is usually dangerous because animals lose their natural wariness of humans, and no longer fear humans. Once animals realize that we don't have much physical strength to back up our size, it tends to get dicey. Hyenas don't seem to share that same instinctive fear that most animals do, or at least they aren't as fearful as most north american and eurasian species. Probably due to coexisting with humans for much longer. I wouldn't recommend it as a hobby but if it's actually a long standing tradition then these folks probably know what they're doing. I doubt it's a tradition that would last if even a single hyena became hostile in the past. Not really the kind of mistake you make twice.
Maximus Autizmus Actually no, we wouldn't be you uneducated moron. Do you know who the richest man in the world is? Mansa Musa, an african emperor of the wealthy WEST african Mali Empire. There was MANY empires and civilizations in Africa but many were destroyed by Europeans (Ex. Ancient city of Benin) and they didn't live in mudhuts. Please google their building structure. Also, there's castles in Ethiopia dumbass. And don't forget moors were the ones that brought Europeans out of the dark ages.
@Ghost Train Haze Yeah but they found out the humans in the village are pretty cool so I don't think so. The hyenas and the villagers been cool for centuries just like pigeons and people at the light rail station.
These hyenas have no reason to attack the man. Why risk injury when they are getting a free meal? With every feeding session they are becoming more domesticated. The man is creating a relationship/bond with a level of mutual respect. Who knows how long he has been doing this or what precautions were made earlier on before the animals and this man became comfortable with each other.
+LestrosTheGreat Even local children feed them. This shows humans can co-exist with other predator species. Also we have the choice. It looks like the citizens of Harar have an arrangement with the hyenas: They say their feeding them keeps the other packs at bay.
Hararis absolutely do have an arrangement with the Hyenas; in fact they have an entire culture founded on Hyenas. Some see the Hyenas as helpful in keeping "bad spirits" away. I could go on but instead it's better I share with you a really good book on this: "Among The Bone Eaters" by Marcus Baynes-Rock, which shares all about what's going on here and what the Hyenas mean to the Hararis. Over time not only have the two species, Hyenas and humans, found the ways to co-exist, they have grown a mutually beneficial relationship. Harar is one of the only places where Hyenas are welcomed and respected, no matter what the "tourist show" might make the situation appear to be. Take care out there, dear Hyenas, I wish you well, whatever well means to you. Blessings... Toni... Pennsylvania, USA...
LestrosTheGreat if you think predators care about mutual respect with people then you should look into predators. They are unpredictable, a hyenas could have an off day and simply just kill the guy
You also have to take into account that hyenas are highly intelligent highly social creatures no telling how long he's been with them if since birth they definitely trust him
He is not with them. He did not raise them. He feeds them in the evening. There is no more social interaction than this. But it goes for a very long time already. If you want to see a man handling hyenas as pets look for Kevin Richardson. Besides his lions he also has some hyenas he raised with a bottle.
The San Tribe (Khoisan) of South Africa also hunt with Cheetahs and feed them. Native Americans here on the East coast of Canada owned wolf hybrid as pets. Shows indigenous people really have a connection with the animals they've co-existed with for millennia. We're all the same but different. Including other species.
Thanks for getting this on RU-vid so in 100 years when there are no more wild animals left, people can see what the planet was like before we ruined it.
Hyenas have a hierarchy and they respect their superiors. The top hyenas usually "distribute" food in sense that they determine who gets to eat what and when. So they have the same respect for the humans they are familiar with and who bring them food. Of course, hyena respect needs to be earned...
In Ethiopia, Hyenas and people have a long, historic, accommodation. On March 5, 2014, The Guardian Unlimited had a fascinating article on hyenas around Addis Ababa, a metropolis of 5 million. (Addis Ababa and its Hyenas Have a Long and Peaceful History.) Personally I understand hyenas as the most persistent and vicious predators. They respect people, however.
But many people don’t respect them, if you see those lion vs hyena videos comments, most of the people are absolute hating hyenas, saying that they are “evil” and “disgusting” or “rats” or “deserve to die” while praising the lion.
Dark matter Hafnium kind of ironic when you realise that they are hating the Hyenas for literally the exact same reason that they are praising the lions. The reason being that they are both trying to survive.
U can' say your a proud African, in the nation and habitat u grow up seeing the wild life's what they too your people and treating them with respect, I can say African respect mankind more than us Mexican people would.
@@Redstoneprime316 People call hyenas things like “devils” or “evil” because they kill and eat almost anything. Now let’s take a look at the human race. There are factories in the world full of tightly packed animals that live their life in the solitude of their cage that is barely larger than their body. Those animals usually go crazy in their cages and try to kill themselves. And on to another thing meat grinders. I’ve seen baby pigs thrown into grinders screaming and begging for their lives. Pigs are intelligent animals but those people treated them as insects and even laughed as the babies screamed not wanting to die. Most people know these things exist but they could care less. At the end of the day if you and the kind old lady across from your house were poisoned and had one pill to save yourselves, she would choose herself every time. So between hyenas and humans who are the real “devils”?
Aww... so cute how he treats them like pets! He must have known this particular group of animals his whole life to be brave enough to (and get away with) teasing them like you would a tame cat. I wish I could get close up to wild hyenas, cause they're my favourite animal. ~(OwO)~
Dam , you don't realize the Size of these Animals until they stand beside a person..!! I always thought of them as the size of a small German Shepherd...... But they are Way bigger than that I can see. Huge mouths too..!!
vrsusvrus Completely agree. Hyenas are so misunderstood and most people still seem to see them as "scavenging, ugly brutes", when this is entirely untrue.
@@Hyapin Yes, people simply see them for what they exactly are, ugly brutes. I love animals, but I can't stand hyenas. However, I'm happy to know that there are those who absolutely love them.
MsUltraBob This is just a group of hyena specific to that part of the region who are used to human feeding. Other groups of hyena will kill you. Hyenas are also abusive to their own kind. Tearing and biting at the more timid one in the group.....forcing the most timid one to eat bones and break teeth.
Wow! They are big and they look freaking awesome!! I have known people who yes they have them as pets but they are still wild regardless domestication, having one as pet would sure be freaking amazing though.
This village has been feeding wild hyenas for over 200 years Pretty much sure those hyenas are intelligent enough to never forget that village’s kindness to their ancestors, and to them
I mean, he doesn't know the wild pack, so no shit they'd attack. these Hyenas have a personal relationship to him, it's built on trust and time. that's how relationships with wild animals go. just because you're friends with one animal doesn't mean the entire species gets told to be your friend. that doesn't diminish how damn impressive what he does is. there are hyenas on all sides of him and he is calm and composed, because he knows THESE hyenas. they know HIM. they know and have built a dynamic with each other.
Most animals you see on RU-vid are small until you see them in person. The first time I saw an okapi at the London zoo, I was stunned. She were massive. Over 6.5 feet tall and looked at least 450kg at the smaller side.
I think it's important to remember that these are wild animals, they're not trained nor domesticated, they do as they please according to their survival. Eating from that man was a part of their struggle to survive.
Ability wise and Biologicaly wise, it takes only 3-4 Hyenas to kill a Lion, yet we will never see that. Because Hyenas intentions are NEVER TO KILL and they dont need to fight with other Predators, because their tactics are similar to Wolfs... they are Clan members and can have up to 80 Members that hunt/scavenge/intimidate! Their intimidation works ALWAYS!
Stronger than lion, stronger than shark or crocodile. They eat freakin' bones. I don't mean little bones, but elephant bones. I don't know of any other mammal that can do that. From what I've read, they have the strongest jaws and bite of any other large mammal.
@@angelitogumera4082 You're right, and I stand corrected. Years ago I'd heard this about spotted hyenas from what I thought was a reputable source. Well, it wasn't. I'm not arguing here, you're correct in everything you said, but I've always been a "fan" of hyenas and their bite is truly impressive, especially given their much smaller size compared to lions and tigers. Anyway, thanks for the correction. I learned something here and that's always a good thing.
Hyenas are not related to Dogs at all... related species to Hyenas are mongoose and somewhat Marsupials (ex. Tasmanian Tiger, Tasmanian Devil), they are also related to cats. But they are their own family (Hyaenidae), bigest Hyaena was the Dinocrocuta Gigantea (extinct) which weighed around 1000 LBS (450kg) and ate Lions for breakfast...
They had a famine in that area. When he began feeding the hyenas, the famine went away. He believes if he keeps feeding them, the famine will stay away. He talks to them and they seem to understand. (Animal Planet)
IMPRESIONANTE lo de este hombre y el vinculo q tiene con esas hienas, claramente se ve q estas le tienen mucho RESPETO, no cualquiera se atreveria a hacer esto.
not just me bro - I suppose at least 1,097 other people as well, you are not alone :D But they are absolutely adorable i stayed up way past midnight that night and i had to wake up early the next day, but it was so worth it, especially the baby hyena videos, which were way past just adorable. I've always liked them, never understood why people dismiss them so quickly without giving them a fair chance.
Hyenas have some of the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom--they shatter bones easily. And he puts the stick in his mouth coming inches away from those teeth. Godlike. Also, digging those awesome warm-ups the guy is sporting.
Hyenas are known to be very...overly confident. They often chase lions away from their kill and steal it from them, or at least in Botswana anyway. I am surprised they don't all gang up on those people feeding them, perhaps they don't because there are many more people around that we don't see on this video.
Griffiith That sounds like something out of a comedy movie. African tribes men walk up to a killed animal, slices the meat, and walks off well the lion's are to much of pussies to do anything.
It would be cool but sort of sad at the same time. Like wolves to dogs it would mean they'd be comparatively stupid. Essentially eternally juvenile. Still... They are pretty cool so maybe.
Nelson Biliosa Hyenas will go after small children but a average size adult male with courage they will approach with caution. Plus there are many village people looking on along with the camera man. I would be nervous too if I was a Hyena
The Expert If you pay attention, whever a hyena got closer to the bucket, he waved the wand in its face, scaring it and when he stood up, they all took a step back. Seems like they weren't really that comfortable, camera or not. Look up Kevin Richardson - The Lion Whisperer and his hyenas. They are not scared, they are pretty comfortable with cameras and they are taken care of. And all the profit made from his videos goes towards the lions and hyenas, so if you could give him a look, please :)
+Crissty Hopkins Hyena Man: IDIOTS THERE WILL BE A KING! Hyenas: Ey, but you said... Hyena Man: I WILL BE KING! Stick with me and you will never go hungry again! Hyenas: All hail the new KING
