MEANWHILE, Bill Maher ignores this issue, *IGNORES the issue of these CORRUPT congressmen ( D & R) practicing INSIDER TRADING on the stock market,* and instead focuses on the stupidity of "wokeness". If your company can't be profitable then look to the corporate leader(s) and you will inevitably find the problem. In a true capitalist society, your company would either succeed or fail. Competition, and giving the consumer value and a quality product or service at a great price = a truly capitalist society. Once upon a time in America this was how things worked more often than not. Now Americans work their butts off to bail out the already wealthy. and end up with nothing to show for their labors.

I dont think the home grown capital has any allegiance to the homegrown labor force. What you describe is a nation that sees those expenditures as an investment in its citizenry, for the overall good of the society. It doesn't seem to work like that here in the US, at least not in terms of healthcare. This place really wants one to go out and work, invent, fend for oneself, as a method of encouraging self reliance, though at a corporate level it does seem hypocritical to give them tax payer money in order keep them afloat. Sometimes the nation does this to preserve it's homegrown companies. It's a bit complex...

The VA opened a clinic in my town about 6 years ago and I started going there just to check it out. The care is so good that I dropped my employer's ridiculously expensive health insurance plan and use the VA exclusively. The care I receive is much better and it saves me quite a bit of money. Once a year I do have to drive to the nearest VA hospital which is about 45 minutes away but other than that minor inconvenience, I'm completely happy with it. Anybody who says that socialized medicine--and make no mistake, this is exactly what the VA health care system is--doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

The number of Veterans out there having shitty experiences with the VA are staggering- enough so that there have been congressional hearings about it, and even drew out Jon Stewart to go to bat for Veterans. I'm happy that you seem to have a good clinic staffed with quality people. But what you have is what thousands of Vets- such as myself- are still asking for. The bottom line though is that we don't want to be wealthy. we just want not to be fucked with and not be in perpetual debt/slavery. Every major life milestone usually involves major amounts of debt. buy a car - debt. go to college - debt. buy a house - debt. get married - debt. have kids - debt. all designed to keep you working

The problem is that GM employs workers and the people who get checks for doing nothing don’t. Corporate welfare does line the pockets of the top tier, but it keeps people working. I wonder if it’s fair that John Stewart makes the money he makes doing this show, and the guy behind the camera makes 1/1000 of that? The hypocrisy works both ways. Easy for him to do this kinda stuff, when he is guilty of the same greed. It has always amazed me that the Democratic Party has been fighting for the working man for so many years and the situation hasn’t changed much. I’m making some assumptions about the salary Stewart receives, but I’d bet I’m not far off. 35 years a carpenter. Could have taken food stamps when I had two young ones and wife couldn’t work because we would not put our children in day care. Wouldn’t have been able to look in the mirror if I had. @Savior Money I'm just curious, do you seriously not notice the massive foundation of pure ideology *_*sniff_** (sniff is joke for people that will get it, don't worry about it) making such a claim is contingent on? As if "historically failed" has any inherent normative value claim other than the banal surface-level 'post hoc ergo propter hoc', a fallacy on its face, shocker. Like, I got news for ya buddy, with a broader consideration of time, an existential Heideggerian "dasein" if you will, literally all this bullshit will be swept into that "historically failed" dustbin of history as well like the glorious statue of Ozymandias gradually fades into specs of sand, my god climate change alone. "Externalities" to put on the neoclassical econ/neoliberal ideological blindfold that you seem to dogmatically embrace without any self-reflection, likely to post-hoc rationalize an arbitrary circumstantial individual position of material comfort though admittedly that's speculation (that just happens to always be correct, but still), since any consideration of this shit for more than 0 seconds will reveal to you what an empty cold and callous ideological farce these hollow talking points construct. Simply ask _why_ and never stop and you'll propel yourself into an escape velocity out of that bullshit. Hell, I was a "libertarian" dipshit for most of my life and only out of pure hubris, thinking I would "destroy" him with "facts" and "logic", did I read Marx in particular, which I mention to point out that instead of achieving my naive goal, I actually came out the other side realizing he had crystalized many of the issues with society at large that I had intuited but failed to connect together/articulate in any larger framework of understanding. Thing is you have to like, _actually read_ the dude, rather than accepting the brazen mischaracterizations that uncoincidentally pervade hegemonic culture to maintain this blatantly unjust social order inevitably dragging us all into the "common ruin of the contending classes", imagine that eh? I'm bored actually so fuck it, lemme provide some context that a more liberal (aka _not_ leftist, your first conflation it seems fyi) reader of comments may be circumstantially unaware of, particularly in 1918 Germany and the creation of Weimar as this is a key pivotal loss for the working class in my opinion. Ebert's SPD suppressing (to put it extremely nicely) the socialist/communist parties with the freikorps paramilitary (later becoming the SS, shocker), revolts that could have gone in a socialist direction, the very socialist moment Marx was predicting and the bolsheviks were entirely and explicitly counting on to form the industrial base (see: historical materialism), without such and in a geopolitical context of competing nation states forced to impose state capitalism to reach industrialization and not be immediately swept into the dustbin of history as evidenced by western support for the white army during the russian revolution. Or look at Italy and the march on Rome with Mussolini's blackshirts, a paramilitary group of street brawlers similar to the freikorps situation specifically to gesture toward capital to solve their social cohesion problem (with force) by specifically beating the shit out of labor leaders/socialists/communists, as this is situation of working class immiseration is inevitable under capitalism as it inherently contradicts even the 2nd law of thermodynamics by presuming unlimited growth on a finite planet and has to find those profits somewhere, Adam Smith himself pointed this out, ch.6 of Wealth of Nations if I recall, the tendency of rate of profit to fall an inherent systemic force central to Marx's crisis theory. Lenin synthesizes this, again descriptively not normatively, in Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism, which whatddya know predicted the macro tidal material forces and their outcomes that leads us exactly to the historical clusterfuck (to use a technical term) we find ourselves in now of class domination. Which is all to say these forces are reactionary in their emergence, and were cultivated by material power (aka capital; hell IBM and Ford funded the nazi party, my god also see the "business plot", "fun" stuff) precisely because the alternative was to dismantle that power. _“The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time its ruling intellectual force. The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production, so that thereby, generally speaking, the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are subject to it. The ruling ideas are nothing more than the ideal expression of the dominant material relationships, the dominant material relationships grasped as ideas.”_ _"Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living."_ - some guy So yeah things like that _might_ be relevant to understanding _why_ X -> Y, if one were to, you know, give a shit about anything that is. Furthermore, see the insanely aggressive imperialism by the US that is usually completely glossed over as it implicitly pierces the historiographical narrative necessary to justify the military action taken globally at behest of supranational finance/corporate capital, effectively taking the baton of empire from the British after WWII by leveraging our circumstantial position of being the only nation-state not bombed to shit, most ideologically obfuscated being the establishment of Bretton-Woods international financial system which cemented the dollar as the global reserve currency and created the IMF/World Bank which we use as a tool of financial coercion along with unilateral sanctions which we have on 1/3rd of the world. To hopefully avoid writing a book-length comment here, I'll just briefly (again, with any luck lol) note some reference points, the throughline being that in a lot of ways the nazis didn't really lose WWII, and y'know if this shit is genuinely cared about it'll hopefully catalyze actually checking this shit out for yourself: US "regime change" operations, the entire operational history of the CIA, NATO and color revolutions, Operation Gladio, Operation Cyclone, Operation Condor, Iran installing the Shah in '53, Guatemala in '54, Sukarno in Indonesia, Lumumba in the Congo, the first 9/11 in 1973 in Chile ousting democratically elected Allende to install Pinochet's military dictatorship (using a literal nazi we protected in the ratlines to south america Paul Schafer, also a huge pedophile because of course he was), Operation Mongoose/Northwoods (false flag to manufacture consent, similar to PNAC's "pearl harbor type event") and the absurd/criminal embargo of Cuba, again though this is the tip of the imperial iceberg, far too many insanely grotesque operations to list, some even domestic like MKULTRA, Operation Midnight Climax, and the extremely-relevant-to-this-discussion Operation Mockingbird (though everyone is usually at least somewhat aware of these at least, despite any attempt at a real reconciliation with this unaccountable natsec apparatus, including the FBI and COINTELPRO), to which I'll quote William Casey CIA director under Reagan aka absolute demon regarding its efficacy, _"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false."_ Surely he's giving two big thumbs up in hell, which at this point is probably hard to distinguish from the world he helped create for us. Anyway, apologies for this screed, but hopefully this was useful in some way to someone, most likely not yourself but ya know, anything is possible lol... _"The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently."_ - the late great David Graeber

I have been telling from beginning, this scam pandemic has been played to cover for the debt bubble. And unlike 2008 09 govt needed a crisis narrative to print fiat currency to bail out their friends companies and that too pushing working class into homelessness and poverty. That's how govt picks winners and losers. The tech companies just shifted the revenue model to be promoted as medical experts, suggested lockdown and control of movement drowning all mom and pop shops into debts and many had to shut shops unable to keep feeding the government and pay exorbitant rent. Guys please see the scam promoted to favor the pharma as they played along to keep the pandemic active to keep printing money and create a fake economy favoring few, and how they fudged covid positive numbers to create panic and fear among people. These booster shot drama wont stop till we start letting them know, it has to stop now.

I have struggled with this idea of socialism for decades. At 70 yrs old, business owner and pure blood capitalist I always thought capitalism was the only economic system that brings the most people out of poverty. I’ve always believed that socialism slows economic growth, diminishes entrepreneurial spirit and competitiveness and lessons individual spirit to create. My feelings today have changed. One of the reasons capitalism is struggling to feed, cloth and house everyone is because there is simply too many people. There has to be a better way other than pure socialism to meet ALL the needs of our citizens. If you took my taxes to 60% I would be O.K. with that if it improved everyone’s lives. The problem is we have the most corrupt government in our history running this country. I doubt very seriously if my 60% would ever make it to the people that need it.
@keiranteccam7820
@keiranteccam7820 2 года назад
See, where I struggle with this is that this trend of capitalistic excess is *not* new. This is history rhyming with itself (because history doesn't repeat, it rhymes) - do people not know about the Gilded Age? The age where Carnegie, Gould, and Rockefeller made their money off the poor labor standards and lack of government oversight of the era - the age where it took people being poisoned en masse (See the 1937 response to the mass diethylene glycol poisoning caused by improperly tested Sulfanilimide drug solutions) by companies marketing quack medicines and/or using dubiously compounded formulations? Honestly this was the time where Capitalism ran truly rampant - I'm 25 and this was taught to me as someone who grew up in the South. We are not there, but the internet and digital media have made this backslide into a New Gilded age easier.
@SharienGaming
@SharienGaming 2 года назад
there arent too many people - there simply is no incentive in capitalism to care about feeding, housing or in the least bit care about the people at the bottom to accumulate capital on that scale, you have to extract wealth from labour... and if nothing stops that - well you end up with labour being completely drained as a simple analogy: for one person to win millions in the lottery... millions of people have to lose their stake - capitalism is telling everyone to play the lottery as much as possible under the pretense that eventually everyone will be a millionaire... but for every millionaire winning out millions are losing... and eventually... people run out of money to play that lottery... and thats where the US is at - wealth has been extracted from the population for so long, that the majority cant afford to be healthy, housed and fed reliably

The argument from the right is a workers total compensation is reflective of how much they contribute to society/how much value they produce and by supplementing an individual's total compensation with additional state benefits you are in fact giving people healthcare. On the other side though you could reasonably argue that employers have far too much bargaining power driving down total compensation lower than what an individual is actually owed. Robert Reich is very persuasive on this. I think the answer is to tell corporations they cannot engage in share buybacks or dividends and their stock is taken off the stock exchange if they don't meet certain criteria such as 1) executives make no more than a 15X multiple of the median worker 2) workers got a wage increase this year 3) at least 15% of the reported profits were paid in taxes 4) the corporation expanded operations in America/engaged in research and development. 5) a percentage of the board of directors is made up of workers I think this addresses the power differential and we let the total compensation piece play itself out. Healthcare is a legitimate political choice citizens can make but they should recognize that the social spending in Europe drove their economy down from 40% of global GDP to around 20 and still shrinking. These countries have around 40%+ tax rates on the middle class, and virtually no innovation in their economies. It's a choice people can make but at least be honest about the trade offs.

Indeed, as with all "conservative" ideological cohesion throughout time, it is dependent on naturalizing the way society is organized and appealing to this implicit natural authority, despite the fallacy on its face, be that god in a feudal epoch with a "divine right of kings" or its contemporary secular equivalent in money and "the market" with a "divine right of the entrepreneur", if only that dang government would get out of the way, as if the state isn't entirely captured by these business forces causing this class domination/conflict of interests to begin with. Its hegemonic power is twofold in that it provides that facade of justification and as a bonus it restricts any ideological imagining of any other possibility and narrows the bounds of consciousness to only outcomes that reify the current social order. As a reaction to the counter-cultural/civil rights movements of the 60s for example, one can note the corporate reaction in things like the Powell memo, outlining and then implementing the strategic cultivation of a sort of "business ontology" via think-tanks like the federalist society, heritage foundation, CATO institute, etc. and implicit material power through corporate ownership structure, which clearly took hold of that generation in its seamless integration with a fervent anti-communism in the red scare, which itself had its own material implementation of Taft-Hartley which effectively legalized union busting. Same story of course with like the late Roman empire and the dominion of the optimates (literally meaning "good men", uncoincidentally also shameless self-serving liars lol), suppressing the populares movement by the Gracchi bros and later Caesar, famously of course by straight up murdering them in the senate for the supposed "authoritarian" threat they posed (to their financial oligarchy is the unsaid part) when they attempted to cross the _actual_ rubicon of breaking these material/ideological mechanisms of social bondage via debt cancellation and land redistribution policy. The ruling ideas are nothing more than the ideal expression of the dominant material relationships, the dominant material relationships grasped as ideas.”_ - some guy _"The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently."_ - the late great David Graeber
