A different video today! This begins a new video series I'm going to try which is Subscriber Requested videos. So if you have one lamp it down in the comments :)
While I have your attention, can you recommend a bike for me or several. I'm 6ft 3..... Currently looking at Yamaha vulcan s (if I can afford it) and some Honda 500s
Thanks! 100% every time I talk to an instructor I know I learn somthing new, I want to do an advanced riding course with him as hes done more mileage in his lifetime than most of us combined on a bike.
Great video bud, just in the middle of my IBT in Galway, and really enjoyin it! Instructor is takin his time teaching, but that’s what I needed, going as an ould lad for the A license. Keep it up bud!
Hi Mick. I'm Zsolt, im just looking for an IBT instructor in Galway area.. would you please share your experiences with your instructor, would you recommend them? Or..? Thank you 🏍️
@@rokkosgeneral hey Zsolt! My IBT instructor was a guy called Daniel, he runs the Comfort Driving school and he’s very easy to find! I’d highly recommend him, he too me from thinking I could ride, to knowing I could. He pushes hard, but he gets you going really well. Google Comfort Driving School, tell him Mick sent you! Best of luck!
Hey Man, just found your channel and am going for my IBT in 2 weeks !! I found the video very helpful, to the point and concise so thanks, i will now start watching some of your other videos ;)
Thanks dude. Have me ibt in da morning in Dublin. Was ment to do it before lockdown part 2 lol. Haven't been on bike in 20 years but can't wait for learning new skills. Not getting train and cab to work hopefully .cheers ride safe
Ah best of luck :) Just take your time and you'll be grand the 20 years will fall away like it was yesterday once you're back comfortable :) Haha that'd be a proper upgrade to be fair! You too bud
In my area of Canada, you can just go write the learner test and walk out wild a learner license. This allows you to ride with someone that has a full license. Many people skip the training course, but I recommend it. Once you’re comfortable, you can go write the final test, followed by a road test in order to get your full license. But, some provinces have adopted a system where you have to start on a 250cc and work yourself up over time.
Ah right, I'd imagine that probably contributes to some early spills. Similar enough to here other than you have to work your way up the licenses unless you're over 24 in which case you can go direct to a big bike with the proper IBT training. I really do recommend the training to people too as if you don't learn in an industrial estate or field like me then you could be in trouble!!
Really enjoyed the video. Good to see some Irish motorcycling videos on RU-vid. Any idea on the waiting list for the road test? I'll be doing mine in Galway. Probably should take a spin into the city to get some city driving experience, we've no Roundabouts out here! :)
Thanks! I've moved to the USA in that last 4 weeks so I'm not sure I count any more sadly! Haven't a notion on current wait times sorry, the booking system online kicks you out a waiting time fairly fast tho from what I remember. Best of luck with it :)
Glad you found it useful :) Well I'm firmly on the side of at least try it if you have that itch, doing the IBT is actually a great wat to feel it out. Yes other road users are dodgy at times but honestly it's not the omnipresent mortal peril some would have you believe. Of course the risks are always there but good gear and a sensible riding style and you'll be grand :) Do it :)
As I said in the video, use your imagination to figure out how I got it there. You could also get someone to ride the bike to the IBT for you and you follow in a car then swap. There are ways and means to accomplish it!
Very comprehensive man & it'll help a load of lads starting out! I got done for the pushing bike segment as I didn't look before I pushed and walked... Still passed 1st time though! :) How're you finding the Osmo action? You're very helpful! :P I STUCK AROUND.
Hopefully anyway :) I think looking back I could have done a better job but sure you know yourself we're not pros :P I was reciting it as a mantra in my head on the day 😂😂 me too! Hurray for us! Really impressed with the video quality off it but the colour and brightness is definitely different to gopro so I'll have some work to do. Build is excellent and the battery seems way better than gopro! Am I?? 😂😂😂 You always do 😍
It's one of the hardest maneuvers to get comfy with but once you do it's grand. Just loads of practice in an empty car park and you'll be grand :) I used to be just as nervous about them!
@@TheGorillaBiker Yeah its a bit of a treck from Ireland isn't it mate. Definitely worth it. We will be taking the car so if you can make it to Leeds or close by I don't mind giving you a lift 👍
This was in and around Ringaskiddy in Cork! If you like nice views have a look at my Gorilla explores series :) It's mainly nice scenic places in Ireland :)
Great video! Looking into getting a motorbike, the cost of a car is just too much with insurance, even over 25 I'm getting quoted mad numbers..motorbike seems way more reasonable and cheaper to run.
Thanks :) It is a lot cheaper once you get on it and over the hump of your initial outlay, just don't forget the occost of gear etc etc. Not only that it's a brilliant hobby with a massive community, whereas standard cars are kinda boring 😬😬 If you do go for the bike option and want anything answered let me know!
@@TheGorillaBiker Cheers dude! I've roughly calculated that itd be 2.5k Ish to get on the road with everything said and done. Looking at just getting a 125 yahama virago! Can grab one for under 1.2k
Ah yeah that's way better than a car! 125s are also great craic to ride and learn on!! Plus your insurance on a bike will be grand your age once you get a years no claims :)
everything has changed so much since i did my tests, i always used to envy my grandads license, he had to drive a "cop to the shop" and back and could then drive everything... i think by the time my grandkids arrive and can drive then they probably will have self driving cars or something equally as weird, insurance for drivers will be like a 100k+ and they will frown on anyone who actually drives for themselves, some might even look at anyone who drives like a weirdo :P a lot of the ibt/cbt stuff is just basic stuff thats going to be used nearly every time you ride, unlike learning algebra in school, you will have a use for it after. back when i passed my test the training company i did it with were trying to get me to join them, must of impressed them with my riding... mind i had been riding for a while when i actually took my test.
I'm actually concerned about that, if anyone ever tried to take me off bikes they'd have a serious war on their hands and if insurance ever became stupid then I'd soon become an outlaw rider :P I don't mind if everyone else is in self driving crap tho that'd suit me down to the ground :) Exactly so it's well worth paying attention and actually trying....unlike school :P Only joking if anyone is reading this school is important ..... Haha you were popping wheelies and all so? :P
@@TheGorillaBiker yeah i do worry slightly about it myself tbh, i do think its likely though that insurance for "normal" drivers will be stupid compaired to self drive vehicles. hope it doesnt go that way but i think its a probablitys. high speed chase followed by a slow speed zimmer frame escape... mind thats if the electric self drive vehicles have the capacity to high speed chase by then :P yes school is good... just ignore algebra after school :D i rode really well and was helping out other learners, avoided a idiot driving on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend and didnt once drop my bike in the ice/snow, also one of my mcc friends instructed their and was saying to his boss how good i was etc etc i had a decent job at the time though and stupidly i didnt take them up on it, but you live and learn i suppose. i have no comments about wheelies i never pulled, i have no comment on helping a friend pull wheelies by using me as a counter weight either, if i did admit to any wheelies i didnt inhale :P and i didnt have wheelie relations with that motorbike... :D
It most likely will sadly but I'd say they'll find a lot of people "forgetting" about insurance if it does ever come around. There were years when I was younger that my insurance was 2 months wages which is complete mental and predatory against young drivers/riders. Haha yup :P Ah nice! You def need to get back on a bike so :) I suggest a nice tasty Gorilla built shadow :P Hahahaha :D :D topical there with the elections coming up :D
@@TheGorillaBiker enough people forget now about insurance or tax. my first ever insurance was 370 3pft i earned 84 a week which was just over a months wages, i had to pay rent and bills too, luckily my rent was cheap 16 a week :p ... man that makes me sound loads older than i am.... im hoping to get back on 2 wheels this year. funily the 600 would probably fit me better than the 750 the joys of being 6`4 with a 31 inseam lol. getting a bit tired of seeing badly done bobbers for sale. never felt safe with bobbers .. once had a unfortunate slow speed balls to wheel issue that put me off them for life. seen a few bikes close to my price range that ive been like nope it would be more cost sorting that out than its worth. i will proably be very tempted to buy a bit of a complete shed, sort it out respray and detail it decently and start saving for the next one to trade up with. do get the odd leads now and again too its just getting lucky. its not like the old days when you could pick up a doer up for a 100.
I'm glad I don't need one of those for anything yet, absolutely mad you can't do one without it. What's wrong with a passport or something like :D Hopefully you won't be waiting too long :)
I do not recommend helmets and stuff like that sorry, I'd just say go in to a local shop where you can try them on if you can as head shape is very very important.
Nope! You can be starting from zero. Just let the instructor know you are and have never ridden a bike so they don't pair you with a more experienced rider, the IBT is often done in groups of 2 :)

Thanks for the video. It's good to know this about the test. Do you know an instructor to recommend in Dublin? I need to do my IBT training again (pandemic delays) and I'm looking for a good instructor.
Glad it helped in some way! Ah that's some balls having to repeat it, I have never dealt with anyone in Dublin but I'll see does any of the lads I know up there recommend anyone.
It depends on what you want to use it for, if it's in case of an accident any of the cheaper action cams will do fine, if you want good footage you have 4 options really, DJI osmo action, a gopro, a drift camera or a insta360 one R! None of them are very cheap though!
I passed my full bike test yesterday. I'm delighted and feel great about getting the ticking time bomb off my shoulders that is the IBT cert running out. I had to wait 7 months from applying for full test to actually being offered a date due to covid but sure none of us expected this shit. If anyone going for the test soon or anything has any questions feel free to fire them my way if you want.
Congrats lad! :) Ah it's always nice to get the full license and now you know you're just done with it. Yeah covid has messed up the timing on a lot of people! AT least you got it done :) Fair play lad!!
@@miketobin9552 Thanks. I can't remember the exact width of the road I had to do the u-turn on but be prepared for 7.5 metres. My instructor explained to me that there were 2 typical spots the examiner likes to choose on the route where I did the test (Cavan). One is 7.5 metres and I believe the other one is slightly wider. It is up to examiner's discretion where he has you perform the u-turn. Will you be doing a test soon?
You can do direct access to the a class once you're over 24 and don't hold one of the other licenses. I'm not sure if you can do direct access if you already have another license.
It's different, there are extra questions related to motorcycles on the test for bikes, which I think is nonsense as everyone should know them but there you go!
I'll leave most of it up to your imagination, but if your bike was to somehow arrive at the IBT spot you can use it, whether someone rode it there for you or not. You're also allowed to ride accompanied by an instructor, so you'd be accompanied during the IBT.
I'm 22. Don't have any bike licence or anything but want to get one. Can I go straight for the A2 licence? And any bike you'd suggest for that category?
As far as I know yes you can go direct for the A2. I don't really recommend bikes too much as they're a personal thing a lot of the time taste wise. But I will say the cb500x is an absolute beauty of a machine I tested one recently
You can get insurance once you're accompanied. You can have a licensed friend drive the bike to the IBT and then use it from there. At least that's was how it was when I did it.
Hey, Just about to get into biking myself, 20 years old so times getting on, finally said "f**k it" ill get on with it. Any recommendations for instructors for the IBT (I'm around the cork area)? Or any other tips for getting into biking?
Haha dead right, you won't regret it!! Yep, Idrive cork, Ian Spillane I think his name is. I did pre test stuff with him but not my IBT. Still in all he's sound. Other tips, buy the right gear from the off even if it means you'll have to wait longer from a bike. You'll enjoy it way more when you're not soaked to the skin from the inevitable rain. That and take your time, you'll have plenty of scares just be within your limits enough to escape with only a scare :) And like...a million more things but those are the main ones :D
@@TheGorillaBiker Thanks a million for all the info. Yeah as for gear, fully agree, I wear thick jeans for the most part so i might consider on hot days leaving off the leather pants (as you are unlikely to land legs first in an accident), But the one thing I would never get on a bike without is boots, leather jacket, and gloves, seen far too many very serious burns related to coming off a bike. Even 30 mph can tear through most clothes. Legs arnt too bad, they there isint all that much weight so you wont get burnt badly, but if you land on your arms, elbows, shoulders, front, back. Thats gonna be a very very bad day. Any recommendations on brands for gear? (especially helmets as ive seen some very dodgy ones around, I quite like the helmets where the whole front can flip up if you know any of those ones that are good) Any tips for a starting bike and insurance? Was thinking a honda cbf 125 (Ill do my test on the instructors bike so I can get an A2 licence, heard its near impossible to get insured on a bike for the A2 test at my age). I already have a full car licence and car insurance in my own name if that helps with getting the costs down. As I said though, thanks for all the info and taking the time to respond, theres very few people around that ride that I can get information off, dad used to ride but its nearly 20-25 years ago, so all information is appreciated greatly :) As for scares, had enough of those haha, driving the r513 to limerick every day, horrible road with trucks coming around the corners on the wrong side of the road. Takes a lot to make me jump after driving that road for so long.
No bother. Ahhh I'd highly recommend not wearing jeans, the issue with them is the chemicals made to dye them etc are very bad if they get stuck in your legs during an accident. Any kevlar type jeans are good tho and a lot of them are very affordable. RST do Kevlar jeans from what I remember. And yes any off without any gear is baaad but I won't lecture as I squid sometimes. You know the risks when you do already :) But I do use my Kevlar jeans when I'm not wearing other gear most of the times, a nurse once said to me the jeans had done more damage in the accident than the fall and slide due to them chemicals. I have checked this with multiple sources since and it holds true. HJC, if they're out of budget MT Helmets do very highly rated cheaper helmets. Both brands do flip up. Check the SHARP rating for them before you buy. :) CBF125 is a great bike, varadero 125 etc, anything from the big boys. Just don't go too expensive as you'll be changing it in no time I would say. MT125 is a cool little bike too but they'd be more expensive as they're newer. Get a year or 2 no claims and you'll be laughing. Advanced rider certs also help. No hassle and best of luck with it all :)
@@TheGorillaBiker Ill take your advice and go with the Kevlar jeans, I actually remember hearing something similar to what you said. Didnt realise there were Kevlar jeans for riding. How is kevlar for a top on hot days? Seen a few kevlar hoodies and shirts on motorcycleshop.ie, or would I be better off sticking with a proper leather riding jacket? Id say I wont be staying on the 125 for long as you said, get my year of noclaims and go to a cbr 350 or something, then work my way up to a 600/650 once I have money to burn in fuel, a 650 is plenty quick for me xD. Only reason im going for the 125 at the moment is fuel economy and insurance, If i had my way id get a cbr 350 first, not a stupid amount of power but enough that I can get out of trouble if I need to.
It depends, if you mean you've tried to cycle before and can't physically do it, then a motorbike might be difficult. But if you just never learned to cycle then yes of course you can!
