In this video i will be taking you on a trip onboard one of the most classic trains of the danish railway. The iconic rubber fronted / nosed IC3 train that can be found all over denmark on Intercity and IntercityLyn services from Copenhagen to Aalborg, Struer, Esbjerg, Hamburg, Sønderborg and various regional services. This is the face of the danish railway.
If youre taking any form of intercity train in Denmark this is most likely the train you will find yourself on. Watch this video to see whats its like onboard one of these trains.

Greetings from Canada! A few IC3 sets were brought over the ocean for testing here and in USA in 1993 and I remember riding on them. Compared to diesel locomotive hauled trains, they sound quite different, like a bus, unusual for a train to hear the transmission shift through gears as it speeds up.
@Simon-Andersen
@Simon-Andersen 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing! Our "New" IC4 trains also have transmission shifts like that but way louder
@olesrensen7819

Originally, the IC3 trains were fitted with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Nowadays, the Danish fleet is re-fitted with 12-speed manual transmissions, although I believe only six of them are used at any given time (either the odd ones or even ones).

@@brsvang521 Yes their technology is outdated and they are old trains. But they still have all the things id expect from a passenger point of view on an intercity train on a sub 3 hour journey. Comfortable seating, WiFi, power outlets, vending machines and tables that support a laptop. As i also mentioned in the video new electric trains are on the way and i am looking forward to getting an updated fleet. Dont forget Denmark did try to replace the IC3 15 years ago with the failed IC4 sets :-) Denmark is currently electrifying all of its intercity routes, most regional lines and many local railways are in the progress of tendering for battery services. I've travled by rail in every EU member state except Estonia and i honestly dont think there is a huge gap between Intercity travel in DK vs EU. Denmark gets the fundamedals with frequency and simplicty right and lacks in the rolling stock and infrastructure areas. Unlike many intercity services in the EU in places such as France, Italy, Spain, Poland etc... Denmark runs its trains on the same minute every hour, on the same stopping patterns all day long for the majority of ICL, IC and Regional trains. And personally i value more being able to catch a train when i want and get some work done onboard, than having to plan my day around 6 trains a day that can travel at 300 km/h in style.
@Simon-Andersen
@Simon-Andersen 2 года назад
@@brsvang521 Yes excatly my point! The trains have everything you'd expect when traveling onboard an European train and nothing more! Thats a good thing. We can definitely agree that Denmark is behind on electrifcation and rolling stock if thats the only metric you want to use to compare, but sadly thats not the full picture of a railway system. The railway in Denmark is in general, well run, well maintained and covers almost the entire nation. Just take look at the rail transport preformance report from 2020 by the EU commision you will find that Denmark scores in the top 3 along with Switzerland and Austria for travel time and acess to rail transport. If you take a look in the overall preforamnce index from 2017 by BCG you will find Denmark in second place right behind Switzerland. On-time preformance in DK isnt Japan, Netherlands Switzerland class here. But taking a look at the Rail Market Monitoring (RMMS) report by the Europan commision, you will find that its still above the EU average of 78.7% at about 87% for intercity journeys So despite not having electric trains to Aarhus or trains going above 200 km/h, i find that the railway as a whole here is great. Certainly not the best but its miles ahead of other wealthy EU nations. Norway, Sweden, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy etc.

@@brsvang521 You're entitled to your opinion. I'm just pointing out the studies on the area suggest otherwise 😁
@Simon-Andersen
@Simon-Andersen 2 года назад
@@brsvang521 I was responding to your claim "the huge difference and the backwardness of the railway in Denmark" . I dont claim that Denmark has the best railway system in Europe. But based on my expirence and what information i can gather from studies on the area that i provided. Its actually one of the better, but not the best systems in Europe. It seems we have different views on what makes a railway great and thats fine. I have nothing further to add.

In the United States Amtrak employees or former Amtrak Employees that now work for DSB call the IC3 Flexliners while Deutsche Bahn or ÖBB uses Gummy Nassen for the IC3 with PZB on Copenhagen Arhus Padborg Flensburg Hamburg Hbf services. I'm wondering if the electric version will run Copenhagen Hamburg Hbf via Rødby and Puttgarden once the electrification works and the tunnel is completed.

International trains will be pulled by the new Vectron locomotives. Since they run in Germany as well, presumably it was cheap to get the german signalling system on them.

The rubber nose trains are comfortable and the concept is clever even in today’s view

2:15 As the driver initiates the coupling sequence, notive how the rubber nose deflates. This is actually crucial for safety. If both rubber noses on the trains are fully inflated when coupling, you'll create a seal resulting in overpressure that can literally be fatal. A driver was killed many years ago in a coupling accident (even though it's done at very low speed) because of this, when the otherwise very strong front window in his cab couldn't handle the sudden overpressurization.
@thesteelrodent1796
@thesteelrodent1796 2 года назад
the couplers also can't engage correctly if the noses are inflated because the trains bounce off each other

Between Stockholm and Gothenburg, 454 km, the X 2000 usually takes around 3 hours. 5 hours seems like quite a long journey, although I suppose people don’t really travel end to end. Would be interesting if Denmark got a similar kind of tilting train dedicated for fast intercity services.
@thesteelrodent1796
@thesteelrodent1796 2 года назад
tilting trains are expensive and heavy, so instead they're straightening the tracks and smoothing out curves wherever possible, or tilting the tracks to allow higher speeds in the existing curves

Lack of maintenance...... The leadership of dsb changed to pennypincher 10 years ago and you see it everywhere mostly on s trains which now looks mich worse than the old second generation ever did

My favorite part of these trains is the fact that they use a diesel engine with a gearbox, rather than the more common diesel electric or hydraulic drive.

Thanks for an enjoyable video, having traveled on trains as part of my Interrail visits to Denmark and Sweden in the 80s and 90s up to 2006. It was nice to see how DSB and SJ changed, I remember traveling on the boat trains from Germany to Denmark and Sweden. I really miss that.

i am in these trains very often and the seats are terribly uncomfortable to sit on. they aren't relaxing in anyway and they are one of those seats that you only need to just sit down for a bit and then stand up again. My back always hurts after leaving the train I've been in for hours. The fact that we are so underdeveloped in our train system just sucks, I wish we could get better trains just like Japan. Plus there's for some reason ALWAYS Germans on these trains that fill them up completely, (You can tell by their language, I often hear more Germans than Danes.) and it's even worse because sometimes they Drink and once, some people began dancing and singing and being loud in the Train which is just rude. og ja jeg er dansker

IC3'erne er min yndlingstog i Danmark. Men Undergrundsbane S8 stock slår den i min mening. En ting jeg hader DSB tog generalt er hvordan de tager røven på folk som køber DSB 1.
@thesteelrodent1796

IC3 (MF) type trains were sold to a bunch of other countries, but in order for DSB to keep them running now that the MG (IC4) proved a fiasco they've bought the Swedish and Israeli IC3 trains after they were retired in order to use them for spare parts. IIRC DSB originally didn't want the ER trains because the line where it makes most sense to run them - on the mainline to Aalborg - _still_ isn't electrified and likely won't be until 2025+, but they were forced to take them by the government for some environmental statement at the time. That's also why there's relatively few of them compared to their diesel-powered siblings

The brilliant idea with the robber nose design is this: When the train comes up to speed an invisible vacuum cone is formed in front giving it superb aerodynamics!

Rode one of these from Hamburg hbf to Copenhagen. First thought when boarding was how old they feel inside, but the journey was supremely comfortable, so much so I fell asleep for some of it. For me to fall asleep in a moving vehicle is unheard of. The diesel engine and the transmission shifting like a bus was a nice touch. First class is a nice place to be, but apart from coffee and snacks around 2/3 of the way into the journey there is no way to get food on the train.
