I just read the news that 13+2 ME locomotives will come to Hungary on a long term lease (5 years initially) to help with our ageing diesel locomotive fleet. Appearantly they are expected to arrive within weeks and will be in service on the Northen route around Lake Balaton and some of the non-electrified routes in the Western part of the country. I am looking forward to these, as you said, the sound of these locos are pretty impressive.
@@Simon-Andersen Apperantly, they somehow managed to convince the authorities that the MEs are distant cousings of Nohab which makes it easier to introduce to traffic than a completely different engine. E.g. no ETCS fitting is required which are anyway not used in the intended routes. We have a rapidly aging diesel fleet of mostly Hungarian made and ex-soviet enginges that had been refitted with modern Catepillar/MTU enginges but that was also 20 years ago. And there are less and less locos left in Europe to purchase. Did you see the livery? I think it looks fairly modern.
Great feedback on the express train - for comparison, what would Uber cost for the same ride? What about Waymo and such (robot non-human taxi)? I think both Waymo and Uber exist in Sweden?
I don't think we have Waymo yet in Sweden, the only self-driving vehicles I've seen are those small slow buses operating at barely faster than walk speed. Uber exists, but for these sorts of trips to/from airports though you are often better off with a traditional taxi company, as they often have set rates that might be cheaper than Uber. Seems like it'll be about ~700-800 SEK with Taxi or Uber after a quick google (regular taxi cheaper). Although with more searching I did found one place that said ~435 SEK which is not bad at all considering the distance, and another where it seems to start at 545 SEK with Taxi 08
I think all the stations on the M1 line have an arch shaped entrance covers and the stations on the M2 line have M shaped entrance covers so it's easy to know which station belongs to which line.
Pricing is terrible for solo travelers (better of using the bus shuttle, flygbussarna). Arlanda express offer heavy group discounts though, if you're 3-4 people pricing is much more competitive. I assume they are competing with taxis.
I saw one of the trains in Germany on the way to Sweden something like three years ago. It cought my eye because its color is different from anything I have ever seen in Germany. It had the Mälartag logo and name on it.
A good alternative is the Vy Airport coaches that run very frequently, stops at the central station and also at all terminals at Arlanda. Takes about 40 minutes and cost €10. Great luggage storage and comfy seats. I drove these busses Sundays for 6 years before and they are really good.
Hello there Simon! Just wanted to say that I am a big fan of your videos!! I am really happy to see different parts of the world through your train travels, which I might not get the chance to see myself!! However, I have two questions for you in regard to this train. 1. Would you have taken this train for its full length run, which was 11 hours and 5 minutes between Zakopane and Gdynia? 2. If you couldn't do this trip in 1st class, would you do it in 2nd class or would it not be worth doing? Kind regards, Andrew from Zurich.
Serbia 🇷🇸 has a train like this one but double-decker on two floors!!! Develops the same 200km/h!!! His name is "Soko" (falcon or hawk)!!! And now come from China 9 CRRC trains with same speed 200 km/h!!! In 2025 we complete 18 Stadler FLIRT4 that go 160km/h and FLIRT3 trains I don't even know how many we have and our all is low floor trains!!! We bay much more FLIRT4 and CRRC trains later in future for EXPO-2027!!!😉😏😎😎😎👌🇷🇸⚔️🛡️🇷🇸⚔️🛡️🇷🇸⚔️🛡️
I've never used this service before, but I have used the similar Norwegian 'Flytoget' airport express train; which runs from Oslo Gardermoen to Oslo S (Central). It's a very good and efficient service....but as with the Stockholm Arlanda Airport Express, it too is very expensive. Way more than is justifiable. Luckily I've discovered the cheaper VY trains, which run on the same route as the Flytoget - but at half the price. As with most 'airport express' services it is abit of a 'cash cow' - duping tourists into spending more than they need to, in order to travel from the main airport to the city centre. In the UK, it's the same story with the Gatwick Express, Heathrow Express, and Stansted Express services.
The Arlanda express costs more than the Oslo equivalent. WTF Sweden, I'm disappointed in you. You're supposed to be the cheap Scandi country, and yet..!
It's an express train. You pay extra for comfort, convenience and speed. (Though for larger groups, people 18-25 or families you barely pay anything extra)
You say five terminals... there are only 4 terminals at Arlanda... Term 2, 3, 4 and 5. They where all renumbered to make room for terminal one.. that then never was built.
It's essentially just 2 now. Terminal 4 has now been connected to T5 and all arrivals from T4 now have to pass through customs in T5, and from what I can tell terminal 3 hasn't reopened since covid
Some context should be added. The reason why the Arlanda Express is so expensive is because it's owned and operated by the private company A-Train, who funded the railroad in the first place. For anybody over the age of 18 who is not travelling with the Arlanda Express, you need to pay a 120 kr (roughly 12-14€) fee at the ticket gates at Arlanda Central for access to the platforms on top of your SL/SJ Ticket.
The Ostbahn railway line was once one of the main trunk lines in Prussia. Already before the First World War, steam trains from Berlin to Königsberg and Gdańsk ran there with the V120, reaching an average speed of 97-100 km/h between the Tczew-Chojnice-Piła stations. The line has a very good geometric profile. v160 would be easy to get there. Unfortunately, after many years, the line is now of secondary importance and the fact that this V90 train runs there is embarrassing.
Would be amazing if Serbia and Montenegro started a reconstruction and modernization project of this line.. meaning overhaul it completely and buy new trains for it.. maybe few nice "etno village" stops along the way.. would be an amazing tourist attraction.
For me the Arlanda Express train it's worth it despite the price. When there's a Delay or the track is closed. Arlanda Express Express will communicat it clearly and book and pay for a taxi for you. Unlike SL and SJ who in my experience will fight you every step of the way.
It said "February 2023" in the beginning, but maybe that's a typo. Probably 2024, but February for sure. The display on the ticket machine said valid to some time in May, which matches that as well. (They are valid for 90 days.)
The last time I was on that train, in mid-February, we were late getting out of Stockholm Central, and to catch up, the driver got us up to 220 kph on the way to ARN. So the top speed is higher than advertised. The other reason for writing is that if you pre-book the trip on the company's website, the cost is at least 1/3rd lower. In the end, you pay for speed and convenience. The buses are terrible, cheap, and take forever.
In my opinion, as someone who lives in stockholm, its very much worth it on the way to the airport, due to you can never count on the commutertrain to work or be on time, or you might end up stuck between stations. From the airport I would rather take bus to märsta and from there the commuter train (pendeltåg). Even if I live half way on the commuter trainstops from the central station to arlanda, i chose my last trip to take a taxi to the airport. Just because I couldnt trust the trains with its delays. If you have plenty of time before your flight goes, then you might want to gamble on the cheaper trains though. For me, not worth the stress.

I made the mistake taking that one once. However, I must say that it's way more comfortable if you have much luggage since at times, the SL train can get really crowded. Obviously not a problem when only traveling with carry-on.
Mate, look into Brazil or Indonesia if you want to see what a BRT system comprises. What you show here does not go beyond introducing new pretty buses and new shelters. BRT is not marketing but an effective system.
When I came to Stockholm last year I also used the Arlanda express. It was the same situation for me, as i could buy a youth fare, I felt that the price was a bit more justifiable for the convenience, however at the full fare I doubt I would pay for it. Also, given that I was buying a return fare which wasn't too much more it felt like a better deal
Personally I like the aerodynamic design of the 700 series over the newer N700 series. The nose is not that long but it still gives a sense of smooth airflow. But it's not like the stubby 300 series. I just like the Dr. Yellow 700 series that runs up and down the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen
The bus costs 10 € or someting like that. But then you risk to get stucked in the traffic jam. That¨s a minor promblem if you travel from the airport but if you travel to the airport you might miss your flight.
