The Icon 700 Headlamp by Black Diamond is the Swiss Army Knife of headlamps. With a max output of 700 lumens, it’s powerful, feature-packed, and relatively small for what it is. The external battery pack is easy to move so the headlamp can be adapted for any adventure. While the Icon 700 comes with AA batteries, you can also opt to purchase rechargeable batteries which is what we highly recommend.
Most importantly, the max output of 700 lumens is about as bright of a light as you’ll need on your outdoor adventures. If you don’t need all 700 lumens, you can easily back down to low or medium settings. Here are the stats:
Max: 700 Lumens, distance of 140 Meters for 7 Hours
Medium: 350 Lumens, distance of 60 Meters for 80 Hours
Low: 6 Lumens, distance of 12 Meters for 190 Hours
The lower output settings will, as shown, reduce power consumption. It should also be noted that depending on the environment, battery times could also be impacted. If you’re heading into the backcountry on skis and it’s 13º outside, that will lessen the time you can get out of a charge.
The Icon 700 also features a few notable safety features. First of all, the built in SOS is key for emergency situations. I love that it’s programmed in so you don’t need to remember the actual code. In addition to the SOS, there’s also a strobe setting. The night vision color options are unlike any other options I’ve seen offered in a headlamp. You can choose from 3 different colors - red, blue, and green. To have all three means you’ll be covered no matter the situation.
I really dig the PowerTap feature which will, in an instant, take you from the highest power setting to the lowest. It’s easy and quick and it’s not your typical push button. The Icon 700 also has battery level lights on the side. I really like having these because it means that at the beginning of an adventure I can always ensure that my headlamp is fully charged.
If you’re looking for a feature packed and extremely bright headlamp for UNDER $100, look no further than the Icon 700 by Black Diamond. While you’re packing a little bit extra in weight and size, you are making up for it with the incomparable 700 Lumens max output. Rated to IP67, the Icon 700 is waterproof and dust proof (able to operate up to 1 meter underwater for 30 minutes) and ready for any adventure no matter how rugged it may be. If you’re interested in purchasing the Icon 700 Headlamp, doing so using our provided link supports us as we get a small kickback from your purchase. We appreciate the support!
*We received the Icon 700 for free in exchange for a review, however, it’s important to know that all thoughts are our own.

I've got the 700 for over a year now, use it mainly on my bike helmet when mtb'ing at night. Excellent lamp, in winter i put the battery pack in the pocket of my midlayer, which is a great feature.

@@AdventureRig Ditto what LittleA said - after a full five minutes of trying to decipher the instruction illustrations in the packaging, I gave up, and found your post, which has now cleared everything up for me - thanks. Now I'm off for a night hike to see how it competes with my Petzel Tikka RXP, with 215 lms but self adjusting light, which works brilliantly, other than in snow, fog, or rain... (actually this is a really, really good head torch, but being able to spot things further away in micro terrain is really useful, thus trying out the BD Icon 700). Cheers for the vid :-)

@@AdventureRig Hi AR, that will have to wait for ~ 6 months. Initial findings: - Buttons are going to be a bugger with mitts on; - Button combination might not be so easy to remember in between trips (on/off is generally good ;-); - Full beam is impressive, and makes identifying features at a distance easier, which is obviously helpful; - Mass, it's still lighter than the original head torch (the Petzel Zoom), and is comfy to wear (but only tried for a short time - don't anticipate any issues); - It will be interesting to see how battery life is in cold conditions (about 10 years ago I tried a Princeton Tec H20 head torch, which lasted ~ 30 seconds with new batteries in conditions that weren't even that cold > freezing - that head torch was so useless, that I've never used it again). All electronic gadgets suffer in cold conditions, to some extent or other, so it'll be interesting to see how this BD headtorch functions below freezing; - Waist strap - these seem like a good idea, especially for keeping your batteries warm, but having tried this on a previous head torch, I found it annoying, and the wires susceptible to damage (also any plugs are a weak point in the system). But as I mentioned, I need to try the torch for awhile and see how it performs for my needs.

Epic that this takes AA. So much safer knowing you can switch out batteries immediately when you get caught out with a flat headlamp trying to get back to camp

Just set mine up. Very impressive. Would have appreciated better (video) instructions on how to set up the extended cord. It's a bit of a knot/loop puzzle. Eventually think I figured it out, but everybody's time is valuable.

Did you see if BD had instructions? Unfortunately if we included instructions in all of our review videos we'd lose people. Thanks for watching!

My last icon I tried using Nicad batteries on a climb up Rainier on a very cold June night. I am talking water bottles freezing even up against my back in my pack It was basically useless and put out almost no light, but that was all I had and had to go with it. Using alkaline batteries I have never had any issues, I would be curious about rechargeable batteries, because I thought they are all Nicad? I never want to go through that experience again heading up Rainier in the pitch black. I am almost wondering how useful a 700 would be? Usually the wind is blowing and either dust is being kicked up, or sleet is pelting you, Too bright a beam and the reflection off those particulates right in front of your face makes seeing useless too. I love the old Icons for their ability to light up the night, this new one is tempting, I just need to find out what the battery issues could be in extreme low temps.

@AdventureRig 3 года назад
Richard Johnson Sounds like we need to test the rechargeable battery this winter. And I totally know what you mean about having it too bright in conditions like you mentioned.

@@AdventureRig that's one of the reasons Black Diamond includes the extension cord so that you can put the battery pack into your clothes to keep a working temperature for the battery

At this point in time, Nicads got phased out a long, long time ago by the EPA for environmental reasons - cadmium being disposed of in dumps is bad news. Almost all rechargeables are NiMH, from what's in a phone, tablet, laptop, or Eneloops. The downside is voltage: Alkaline AA & AAA put out 1.5V, NiMH AA & AAA put out 1.2V, so in equipment sensitive to battery voltage NiMH sometimes doesn't work so well. Example: I have some Rode microphones and the instructions warn - you can use rechargables, but the output signal will not be as strong. So you might want to test before going on that long campout/hiking trip.

Great presenter, (little cheesy on the mind-blowing lol) just need a better camera for night shooting. Try to look for a full-frame camera, like the Sony A7 line. As for a question, have you used the Black Diamond Icon 500 (2017 model)? I'm just wondering if i should upgrade as the run time is supposedly lower on the new one. Does the Icon 700 run max brightness for the full 7 hours?
@AdventureRig
@AdventureRig 3 года назад
1stNightingale Thanks for watching. I have not used the 500. It will go 7 hours in optimal conditions on high which is 700 lumens.

Just got this today. Has anybody had issues with when you turn it on max brightness the battery indicator shows 1 bar when the batteries are brand new. It will start off at 3 bars, but when i put it to 700 lumens the bar goes to 1 and will only go back to 3 bars if i take the batteries out and put them back in. Any fixes or should i return it and get another

Can you run 14500 batteries in this instead of the AA?
@AdventureRig
@AdventureRig 3 года назад
It may be worth calling their tech support. They recommend AA and I would be cautious about sending that much voltage to it when you’re comparing around 3V for AA to over 8V for 14500.
@bradw1808
