The Iconic MUSIC Scene of April 1965, You Just Can't Find Today! This place in time is filled with music, fashion, incredible live shows and a promising outlook. The music scene has taken on a life of its own. Optimism can be seen in the fashion, heard in the music and experienced on the small and big screen. The joyful energy within the music scene is emitting everywhere from Motown to California, from London to LA. Music weaves in and out through many aspects of lifestyle in April 1965. Despite problems emerging in the world, there is still an overall positive feeling about life and the world to come. We see science play a big role in fashion and culture. The iconic music on the radio has a song for everyone and it is creating a feeling of connection throughout society. If only that optimism could have just been bottled up and a little saved for a rainy day..

I was born and brought up in central London and a teenager throughout the 1960's. It amuses me whenever a film is made now and tries to depict that time they always get it wrong. I'm 73 now and would not want to be a youngster today. The 60's was a wonderful era to be young and free.

Thank you for posting this. which is beautifully put together, and shows the joy of those times. I love the black & white stills, especially of children playing. I grew up in Essex, England, and I was 7 in 1965. Culturally, I agree they were special times we were lucky and privileged to grow up in. However, I think nostalgia can be misleading. Personally, my family life was terrible, there were also gangs in my area, there was much sexism, racism, etc. In the UK class distinction was stark. In parts of the US there was segregation. In South Africa there was apartheid. The world was really far from perfect! The process that really began in the '60s led us to where we are today - and that's not all bad either. Think about it!

Thanks for the memories, I'm 77 now from Liverpool and in '65 I played a '63 pre CBS tri colour sunburst Stratocaster with a number of groups, it was the most magical time that people will never ever see again in the world, if I could go back in time I wouldn't think twice about it and just go, I feel sad for the current generation, they will never be as free, as wealthy and happy as my generation. The problem with toady's music is what they call suicide music in the business and it really makes you want to commit suicide not be happy.

My favorite year. It was a Golden Age called the Youth Quake and it was so exciting to have experienced it. Theater, arts, fashion, music, cars, freedom, manners, class..everything good was part of that year. In America we all wanted our town to be a mini London with the hip clubs we saw across the Pond. We had the Beatles right out the gate when they shook the planet. Jackie Kennedy was our model, as well as the four original Beatle girlfriends..they were so chic and original. It took your breath away to see it all unfold . And personally, I met my husband in April of 1965, so it was doubly exciting for me. All of us are grateful for having been there.

I was 17 and looking forward to high school graduation in May. My college acceptance letter came in the mail, and I was on top of the world. Some of my friends were going to college. Some were drafted into the Army; they knew Vietnam could be in their "college". As Charles Dickens wrote in A Tale of Two Cities, "“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way..."

I think one of the most important points brought up here was the difference in the amount of social interaction between people back then. There were no mobile phones, no internet, with maybe one telephone in a household (probably stuck in a hallway somewhere) where the rest of the family could hear what you were saying. If you wanted to talk to your friends, you went out and met them in person. People hung out on the streets a lot more. Life happened outside.

mac - you MUST buy Ian MacDonald's book Revolution in the Head - 500 pages of every dang Beatle song reviewed and explored both technically and otherwise AND a section in back of parallel things of the time all chrono - Politics, Sports, Science, Sociology, Entertainment of the entire decade so you can easily put together a picture of the decade in chrono if you didn't live it in real time like we boomers did. He does the BEST job of conveying life pre-Beatles and of course the culture shock of after. I have 100s of Beatle books - used to work at Capitol and trust me, Ian's book is THE book if you had to own ONE Beatle book. 🎸

April 1965 was a memorable time. Iwas 12 in the 6th grade Ct. USA. I bought into the music scene in a big way. On the advice of older musicians I decidrd to play bass guitar and obtained my 1st bass and amp in june 1965.Today I'm 71 and still perform on bass. It all started in 1965 for me.Acts like Wayne Fonbender and Hermin made me laugh. But other UK acts were extremly influential. I don't think I need to name them, you guys know exactly who I am reffering too. By April of65 I had seen Peter Paul Mary thanx to a very kind Paul Colby who allowed me to see them at his club acompanied by my father. Next was the UK's Dave Clarke 5 and in Augest 64 the Beatles at Forrest Hill Stadium. I eas 10 and 11 for these.1965 was the starting point. From that point forward, way too much happened to me than I could possibly explain here. Not even close!! Your "65" doc was great. Just had more verve than what was in the charts, with very few exceptions, at least unil punk rock and new wave gave the scene a much-needed kick in the backside, including bands that were very mod influenced. It was a great time to be a teenager. Young Aussies flocked to London then as I did in 1968.

I remember 1965 as a youth quite well. Great time to be immersed in pop culture! A great time to be young. Pop culture that had style, fun, substance and was just so incredibly outta-sight boss! Today? Tasteless, forgettable garbage fit to be flushed down the toilet.

Turned 18 that year, was such a great time to be alive! Still listen to the music on a local "nostalgia" radio channel 9,500 miles away in the sub-tropics. 🦘🌴

The entry level pay of $1,82/hour sounds high. When I graduated high school in 1973, minimum wage was 1,65/hour. I was 10 years old in 1965 and remember the music well.

Basically, it is 10 times more now, but as you noticed rent and Mcdonalds is like 20 times more now. So that level of population seems twice poorer now in terms of housing and food

My parents always said they were glad I was born in 1962. They could turn on the radio and positive, multi-cultural, hopeful songs would be on, encouraging us to think expansively, consider how to treat others in the best way

'66 is generally perceived to have been the summit of Pop music, but '65 was also a high point. It was about the writing. We teens in bands believed we could do great things like we were hearing on the radio, and many of us did have hit records, despite being only 16 or so.

I was 7 at that time. Living in the north of the UK. Even at that age, I had a vivid sense of sixties pop culture - and it having more effect on me than school, environment, friends etc. It seemed to exist in some sort of dreamland and was a happy place to escape to, in my head. All the sounds of that particular era were evocative of all sorts of things that happened and occurred to me. I liked just about everything in the charts. I drank it in from the TV and radio. It was probably too powerful and affected me too deeply, and it transpired that I actually liked the idea of pop music much more than I found the reality of it to be, years later, when I started to attend live gigs and discos, festivals etc. The uncomfortable volume levels, the faintly fairground aspect, bow tied doormen, the controlled, but apparent aggression and sheer competitiveness of the teenaged crowds I mingled with at such events, started to turn me off the whole thing. I eventually realised pop, rock, soul, jazz etc were not for me, and drifted into other forms. I wasn’t built to withstand their visceral power. It was a brilliant experience while it lasted though.

The 60's, in bed listening to a crystal radio set, careful with the earpiece cord not to strangle myself! Summer playing street cricket till everyone got called for dinner, the back out till dark. Early morning milko carts, the pan man coming around at school, mow the yard with the rotary push mower. Reading dads Popular Mechanics mags, (i still have them in 2024!). Immediately crushed on Judith Durham, (still love her! RIP dear wonderful Lady!) Sixth grade at Reservoir East State School!
