The Idol was initially hyped up as a scandalous, dark, and erotic new must-see from director Sam Levinson and musician The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) but it turned out to mostly just be… a boring mess. So what went wrong? (And did anything go right?) Today we’re taking a look at everything that went wrong behind the scenes, what actually went down on the show, and the few bright spots that do exist.

This show is a mockery of sexual violence victims, sexism within industry, and generally the most disgusting thing I've seen so far. It has really lost my hope for modern cinema. And the fact they scrapped the initial female director due to "too much of a female perspective" is so far the biggest step backwards for women in media this generation would've seen in contemporary pop culture. It has turned abuse and female suffering into the male gaze and fetishism. It also revealed to me the true nature and intention of Euphoria which I looked up to as a child, I now realise it's a disgusting portrayal of glamourised pedophilia. Whoever enjoyed watching high schoolers (For example, the character played by Sydney Sweeney) sexually performing even if it is acting, also happens to be excited by those ideas which it intends to portray.

In one word it was shallow, we watched all 5 episode and honestly I still can't tell you what its about. It literally feels like Sam and Weeknd made this show to leer at young vulnerable women. I have said this before and I will say it again Sam has all the telltale sign of director/producer who harasses young woman, we have seen this too many time and this guy isn't even subtle about it. If Hollywood truly changed and it wasn't all virtue signaling PR someone would have looked into this guys weird creepy behaviours. His last 4 project all had to some capacity scenes were older man leer or take advantage of younger women..... like guys come on?? I get the need to express female sexuality and female perspective, I loved Rue and Lexi and how they were written...... but is a creepy middle age dude the best director for these projects?? I actually just realized that Leia is Jocelyn’s Lexi. She is a meek passive best friend to a self destructive troubled young woman. She the one sane character in a show full of people who are uncaring at best and sociopaths at worst like Lexi in Euphoria

@amattes1960
@amattes1960 11 месяцев назад
The problem with being the sane best friend is that sanity isn't dominating and is therefore less powerful. That's because insanity is about power before all else. Insanity grows out of being made powerless and being abused in childhood. The lesson learnt is to become as powerful as possible first so that you're never hurt again. I'm not talking about the narrow definition of insanity that is psychosis, I mean the boarder definition of mentally unhealthy states and behaviour. Mostly Cluster B personality traits. It is all about getting power and keeping power the fastest and most efficient way possible. Preferably absolute power i.e. domination. People who value other things in life like love and equality find themselves made powerless when around people who seek domination in all situations. It's not that you cannot take power if you value love and equality, but power-hungry dominating people cannot share power. Dominating people cannot look at others as equals in a consistent way. They see all relationships as win or lose, and people who don't play to win find themselves in the losing position all the time.

Lexi has way more agency, the power dynamics between Leia and Jocelyn are fucked. what exactly are Leia's options? if she pushes too hard, she's risking more than friendship -- she's also out of a paycheck and a place to sleep. she tries to ask Destiny and Chaim for help multiple times and they ignore her bc they care more about the possibility of making hits and money. I didn't watch all of Euphoria s2 but didn't Lexi write and perform an entire play about how shitty she thought her sister was? sounds like some truly uncaring and wildly passive aggressive behavior to me

The Weeknd needs to stick to singing because most musicians aren't good actors with a couple of good ones. If you want a story about a female musician struggling with mental health and it's portrayed sympathetically and sensitively, I recommend The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes. The book is about Cassidy Holmes(as the title suggests), a former member of Gloss, a 90s-2000s girl group that's based on the Spice Girls. She commits suicide and the members who haven't spoken to her after they disbanded attempt to process the loss and wonder what they should have done to help her. Crazy how The Weeknd said in an interview how he played a character that was “nothing like him”… that’s a weird thing to say?? Considering he removed Amy Seimetz for taking it in “too much of a female perspective”, I wonder if he had an easier time playing this cartoonishly evil-turned-“sympathetic” predator that he can distance himself from over what Seimetz supposedly wrote that made The Weeknd so uncomfortable? 🙃 Or did he just want to give Sam Levinson full control because he knew that meant he got to mistreat women for “story”? It literally feels like Sam Levinson is Flip directing Philbert and The Weeknd is Bojack Horseman. It’s literally filmed in his house?!? Like c’mon!

Even in the Seimetz version he was still the same Tedros, the focus was just more on Jocelyn and the whole cult thing than him. Seimetz only directed, she didn't write any of the characters. Also, they filmed it at his house to keep the budget low. This literally takes like 10 seconds of research to find out and you couldn't even do that before writing your comment smh
@sapphic.flower
@sapphic.flower 11 месяцев назад
@@TheJoel0508 even if it's still the same Tedros, it still would've been handled differently with another director? You think the movie would've actually come out the exact same with the exact same character writing if it were Seimetz's version over Levinson's? She had the same synopses but had a different take and taking it in a "female perspective" is a lot more suspicious than just saying she focused too much on Jocelyn. There's an emphasis on the gender. 🤷🏻 But even if that was The Weeknd's problem, I also find it inappropriate of him to get rid of a director because he wanted to be as much of a main character when he was clearly meant to be the antagonist. And in the end, he played along with and was even creatively involved in the objectifying filth that was Levinson's version JUST so he can also get a lot of screentime?? Ridiculous.

@TheJoel0508
@TheJoel0508 11 месяцев назад
@@sapphic.flower Ofcourse it would have been handled differently, but from what we know, it wouldn't have been THAT different. When it comes to TV shows, directors don't have as much power as when directing film. It's mostly up to the writers, the showrunner and the producers. And why is it necessarily bad that he didn't want to lean too much into the female perspective? Does all art have to be about the female perspective at all times? And even if I were to grant you that he "got rid of her" (cause we don't know that, they said creative overhaul) so he could get more screentime, the show was literally his own idea, and he always intended to play Tedros, so what's so inherently bad in wanting to have more screentime in YOUR OWN show? Edit: I do agree that Sam Levinson is a shit director though, The Weeknd should have called in the Safdie Brothers from Uncut Gems to direct instead.

Euphoria had a lot of exceptional actors and it makes the difference. Jacob Elordi was playing a monster (on paper) and he managed to imbue Nate Jacobs with such damaged humanity. Sidney Sweeney was playing arguably the "worst teenage girl on the planet" but it was such a committed and vanity-free performance, that I marvel at it during re-watches. And I cannot say enough good things about how Zendaya played her character - it's a beautiful and and achingly vulnerable performance. I could barely stomach an episode of The Idol because no one the screen was able to surpass the god-awful writing. Everyone was terrible and was "highly aware" that there was a camera on them. As someone who s really interested in cult dynamics I actually stuck it out with the whole show. It was weird because at first there seemed to have been done so much research in cults and I could see a lot of it in the show - like cults actually looking for high performers to be able to extract more money or sex or power from them, or having a really weird but (for some people) charismatic leader (Raniere from NXIVM is a great example of someone who somehow becomes a cult leader even though he seems just like a weirdo) or using song and overwhelming displays of affection to rope people in. Like the elements were there. But then especially the ending, with Jocelyn somehow taking over the cult and noone stopping her… That didn’t really make sense at all.

I disagree about the ending, it looked like she replaced her mom's abusive role in her life with tedrous. She looks at the brush sadly after achieving what she wants and feeling fulfilled only to realize she did like the abuse at some point. Instead of healing she chose to be unhealthy & at the end when she invites him to the show she publicly makes the grandiose speech about how much he means to her and how she got here. I believe she chose success through pain instead of facing her abuse, she bought the new brush to symbolize that she chose this. She doesn't need her mom anymore but she also needs the unhealthy habits bc that's her normal unfortunately.

This'd have been such a better ending. Sadly, it's not true, the "real" ending is Tedros is Jocelyn's victim, Levinson said so himself in the "Inside the episode" video and it was "hinted" (if you can call that hint) at in the beginning where Jocelyn is taking pictures and goes through all emotions effortless and when they torture Xander and he tells The Weeknd Jocelyn is a manipulation mastermind and she's manipulating him too.

I am sorry but anything LRD said during promo I just can't believe it. They are being paid for this promo so obviously they won't say 'it was terrible and i felt uncomfortable' LRD, Weeknd and SL interviews during the show were marketing it as groundbreaking and never done before. You can't take that seriously even if you try. Especially with Sam using similar wording with the writer of Succession (right after the show ended) made it look like he wanted to sell it as something better than it was

This series has given a lot to talk about. It has received bad reviews for its explicit content, the scandals due to the resignation of the director Amy Seimetz due to creative differences with The Weeknd, the new assignment to the controversial director Sam Levinson, the toxic environment on the set made this series a nonsense argument that instead of focusing on their goal of vindicating the dark side of fame, they substituted it as a sexual fanfic from Wattpad. Plus they allegedly used Jennie's name to lure out the Blinks. If the sex scenes had been cut and had focused more on the plot they wanted to show, this series would have succeeded.Also, if in the first chapter a flashback of Jocelyn from her childhood had been broadcast, the mistreatment she was subjected to by her mother, as she was before she was famous, this series would have reached something interesting to know Jocelyn's psychological profile and thus know the dark side of fame.

I think The Idol is this generation's Showgirls. Both tried to be these serious tales of the dark side of show business but were just cringey. Both featured over the top unsexy sex scenes. Both had a young female lead, baring it all as a way to show how serious she is as an actress, although I'd say the Weekend gave the Nomi Malone performance. And instead of Nomi's jazz hand choreography we got World Class Sinner's choreography.

Instead, lily rose/Jocelyn was the villain the whole time and now tedros is the victim? The ending is very anti metoo when you think about it and clearly the ending was a last minute change imo. She didn't sign on to the show we all got, and given how explicit it is, she's facing backlash in her home country on top of it not being a hit. Ruh-oh....please don't tell me Sam Levinson let his success get to his head. You see this a lot where previously great creators start thinking they're infallible, reject all criticism, then they never make anything good ever again. George Lucas is the obvious example. M. Night Shyamalan is another (he gave us The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable...then everything started going downhill with The Village). I just hope Euphoria stays consistently good like it has been, especially after such phenomenal special episodes and season 2. Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, and Sydney Sweeney have become big enough names maybe they can slap the shit out of him if he falls off the rails.
@lunacouer
@lunacouer 11 месяцев назад
I think it did. People were massively frustrated with Season 2 over all the dropped plot lines and uneven pacing, and that's exactly where The Idol failed. Well, worse, since we didn't have a Season 1, so we had no investment in any of these underdeveloped characters. Interestingly, Sam had Euphoria Season 2 ready to go, but once Covid happened, he rewrote almost the entire show during lockdown - hence, being unprepared and rewriting things on the fly during shooting. The only episode that made it through almost completely untouched was Episode 5, and it shows. That episode will go down in TV history for its brilliance. Problem is, he "got away with it" and repeated that behavior with The Idol. Instead of listening to the critiques and refocusing on tighter storylines, he just doubled-down. He doesn't seem to handle criticism very well, and with all the money HBO just threw at him, I think he's entered his "I'm a golden god" phase, lol.
