Cawas, Lawrence Alym GCAS 14 - World Literature WF - 1:00-2:30 PM Group 1 The Illiad The Illiad is an epic poem by Homer, it became a classical Greek literature of all time, discussing the Trojan War, championed by the heroic deeds of Achilles. It is a reflection of how great and civilized their life on that period. The Illiad is a reflection of human life, man with weak nature, prone to evil actions such as what the Illiad portrayed revenge, war, survival, love, fate, honor and mortality. Though weak it doesn't mean that Man's life is pure evil, there's still the gift of reason, where the two faculties reside, the intellect and will. In there we will still see the goodness of Achilles, their courage, sacrifices for their loved ones, their dignity and respect. This literature strengthen the Greek civilization, that it became widespread in all Europe, and in the whole world today, many examples and virtues that are inspiring to our daily lives.

Ceralde, Jose V. GCAS 14 - World Literature WF - 1:00PM - 2:30PM Group 1 - Illiad The Iliad by Homer encompasses a rich tapestry of themes that delve deep into the human experience. One of its central motifs is the theme of revenge, which ignites the flames of the Trojan War and propels characters like Achilles on a quest for vengeance, fueled by personal loss. This thirst for retribution intertwines with the broader theme of war, portraying the brutal realities of conflict and the toll it takes on individuals and societies. Mortality looms large throughout the narrative, as warriors strive to etch their names in the annals of immortal fame through heroic deeds, grappling with the transient nature of life and the pursuit of enduring glory. Amidst these grand themes, The Iliad also explores the delicate threads of love and friendship. Maternal love is depicted through poignant moments such as Priam's heartfelt plea for Hector's body, showcasing the enduring bonds of family amidst the chaos of war. Additionally, the profound friendship between Achilles and Patroclus stands as a beacon of companionship and loyalty, offering a stark contrast to the brutality of battle. Through these intertwining themes, Homer crafts a narrative that delves into the complexities of human nature, highlighting the enduring values of honor, loyalty, and acceptance of fate in the face of mortality and the inexorable march of destiny.

ESCALONA, ANGELICA D. WORLD LIT WF (1:00-2:30) G1 - Illiad "The Iliad" by Homer delves into several prominent themes such as revenge, war, mortality, love and friendship, fate and free will, and honor. The epic poem's narrative revolves around the concept of revenge, serving as the catalyst for the Trojan War and driving characters like Achilles to seek vengeance for personal losses. Mortality is a central concern for warriors who strive to achieve immortal fame through heroic deeds. The gods, despite their immortality, influence human destinies while respecting the inevitability of fate, which remains beyond their control and unaffected by human free will. Characters like Achilles and Hector confront their fates with a sense of acceptance and honor, particularly in the face of death in battle. Love is portrayed through maternal bonds, as seen in Priam's plea for Hector's body and Thetis's protective instincts towards Achilles. Additionally, the profound friendship between Achilles and Patroclus serves as a poignant example of companionship amidst the turmoil of war. Through these themes, "The Iliad" offers insight into the complexities of human nature and the enduring values of honor and loyalty.

Calbay, Hillary Joy S. GCAS 14 - World Literature WF - 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Group 1 The Iliad, an epic poem written by Homer, centers on the following prominent characters: Agamemnon, the one that leads the Achaens, and Achilles, for who was considered to be their greatest warrior. Having stolen two (2) maidens, namely Chryseis and Briseis, Achilles suddenly withdraws and refuses to battle with Agamemnon against the Trojans, as led by Zeus himself. Without the presence of Achilles, the Achaeans faced countless loss, wounds, and deaths. One factor that urges Achilles to finally reconcile with Agamemnon in the battle is having found out about Patroclus' death, as the latter is killed by Hector. Driven with grief and rage, Achilles then killed Hector and drags the latter's corpse using his chariot. Towards the end, King Priam, Hector's father, pleads and had deeply moved Achilles to surrender/return the corpse of his son and both armies came to a temporary truce, and gave justice to both Patroclus and Hector's death.

Enriquez, Jejomar R. Gcas 14 world literature W/F 1:00 -2:30 Group 1.Iliad The Iliad celebrates war and the men who wage it: man-killing Hector, lord of men Agamemnon, and swift-footed Achilles, whose rage is cited in the poem’s famous opening line. However, the same invocation also mentions the “countless losses” suffered as a result of the Trojan War (1.2). While much of The Iliad celebrates the splendor of military victory, the poem also honestly depicts the costs of war, which significantly undermines the idea that war is a wholly glorious endeavor.

DELOS REYES, CAMELLE RIE GCAS14 (World Literature) W/F 1:00-2:30pm Homer, the renowned Greek poet, crafted two monumental epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, during the 8th century BC. These works, though poetic rather than historical, profoundly influenced Greek culture, shaping the outlook and values of generations. The Iliad revolves around the Trojan War, detailing the struggles of legendary heroes like Achilles and Hector, while the Odyssey follows Odysseus on his journey home from the war. Both epics offer insights into Greek life and beliefs, depicting themes of honor, pride, and the intervention of gods. In the Iliad, Homer portrays the relentless conflict between Greek and Trojan warriors, driven by pride, vengeance, and divine influence. Achilles, the greatest of Greek warriors, withdraws from battle after a dispute with Agamemnon, only returning after the death of his close friend Patroclus. Achilles' wrath leads to Hector's demise, but even in victory, the humanity of war is evident as Priam, Hector's father, reconciles with Achilles, demonstrating the enduring valor and compassion amidst tragedy.

Batac, Lara M. GCAS14 (World Literature) W/F 1:00-2:30 Group 1 The iliad' tell the story of Achilles' anger during the Trojan War. Nine years into the war, the Achaeans capture two maidens, Chryseis and Briseis. Agamemnon takes Chryseis as his prize, while Achilles claims Briseis. Chryseis's father, a priest of Apollo, asks for his daughter back and offers a ransom, but Agamemnon refuses. Chryses then prays to Apollo for assistance. Apollo causes a deadly plague in the Greek camp, prompting Achilles to seek out a seer named Calchas to uncover the cause. Calchas reveals that the plague is a result of Apollo's anger and a demand for vengeance from Chryses. Agamemnon responds by demanding that Achilles give him Briseis in exchange for returning Chryseis. Agamemnon's demand angers Achilles and causes him to consider leaving the battle and taking his people home. The two argue and Achilles threatens to kill Agamemnon. However, Athena intervenes and prevents the fight with the help of Nestor's advice. Agamemnon sends Chryseis back to her father and has Briseis taken from Achilles' tent. Achilles prays to his mother Thetis to ask Zeus to punish the Achaeans for their actions. Thetis promises to speak to Zeus about the matter once he returns from feasting with the Aethiopians. Odysseus returns Chryseis to her father and makes sacrifices to Apollo, who lifts the plague from the Achaean camp. After the plague is over, the suffering for the Achaeans continues as Achilles refuses to fight due to his dispute with Agamemnon. Thetis intervenes and asks Zeus for assistance, despite his hesitation because Hera supports the Greeks. Eventually, Zeus agrees to help the Trojans. Hera becomes livid when she discovers that Zeus is helping the Trojans, but her son Hephaestus persuades her not to plunge the gods into conflict over the mortals.

BINLAYO, JESSAMAE C. GCAS 14 - WORLD LITERATURE WF ( 1:00- 2:30 ) GROUP 1- iliad SUMMARY: The Iliad is set during the Trojan War, a conflict between the Greeks and the city of Troy. The poem begins in the tenth year of the war, focusing on a quarrel between the Greek leader Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. The immediate cause of the war was the abduction of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, by the Trojan prince Paris. This led the Greek kings and armies to gather and sail to Troy to reclaim Helen. The central conflict of the Iliad is the wrath of Achilles, the greatest Greek warrior. After a dispute with Agamemnon, Achilles withdraws from the fighting, allowing the Trojans to gain the upper hand. This leads to the death of Achilles' close friend Patroclus at the hands of the Trojan hero Hector. Enraged by Patroclus' death, Achilles rejoins the war and kills Hector in a brutal duel. He then drags Hector's body behind his chariot, desecrating it. The Iliad ends with the Trojan king Priam pleading with Achilles to return Hector's body for a proper burial, which Achilles eventually agrees to. Throughout the epic, the Iliad explores themes of honor, glory, fate, and the human condition against the backdrop of the Trojan War.

CRUZ, ANNE NICOLE M. WORLD LITERATURE W&F 1PM-2:30PM GROUP 1-ILLIAD In the epic tale of the Trojan War, ten years have passed with no victor in sight. The Greeks, led by formidable leaders like Agamemnon, Menelaus, Odysseus, and Aias, remain encamped outside Troy’s walls, facing off against the Trojans commanded by Hector and Aeneas. At the heart of the conflict lies Achilles, the greatest warrior of all time, whose wrath is sparked when Agamemnon dishonors him by seizing his slave mistress, Briseis. Refusing to fight, Achilles seeks retribution, leading to a series of events that shift the tide of war. Zeus, on the other hand, is reluctant to step in but is persuaded to do so by Achilles' mother Thetis, who supports the Trojans. But the Greeks, spurred on by their gods, engage in furious combat, with Aias and Diomedes exhibiting unrivaled bravery. However, Hector's comeback brings the Greeks back to the verge of loss until Agamemnon is persuaded by sound advice to make amends with Achilles. Achilles' companion Patroclus enters the battle dressed as him despite his lingering rage, and he meets a horrible end at the hands of Hector. After being devastated and furious, Achilles eventually returns to the fight, exacting revenge on Patroclus and taking back control of the battlefield. But then the story changes as Hector's father, Priam, shows courage and humility by asking for his son's body. Touched by Priam's gesture, Achilles grants his plea, creating an instance of empathy in the midst of war's savagery. Troy mourn Hector's passing as the story comes to an end, signifying the price of war and the transient nature of splendor.
