The Mexican Buc-ee's adapted their chipmunk mascot to have a mullet. I think the change was easy to do cause 'Buc-ee's' pronounced in Spanish sounds similar to 'Bukis', which is a well-known Mexican band renowned for their mullet hairstyles. So that explains the chipmunk wearing a mullet lmaoo

The Rusty Krab was too on the nose to be parody. Damned shame because it was pretty clearly a labor of love.

I feel kinda bad for the Rusty Krab. If I had been Viacom, I would have just tried to work with the owners for a limited licesing agreement. Obviously the licensing of something like Spongebob would be pretty high, but you could have everyone win that way. Kinda sad it was sued in such a way.

Bootlegs are such an interesting topic to me in the marketing world, seeing how they're such massive middle fingers towards copyright laws.

I've followed the story of Michealsoft Binbows recently. I managed to visit the old store in Maebashi during July this year, getting myself a selfies wearing the t shirt holding the original internet photo.

As a Southeast Asian, it is true that the Holocaust was barely mentioned in history classes. So most people don't even know the crimes that Hitler and the Nazis perpetrated across Europe. In my country specifically, WW2 is never taught at schools, it was only briefly mentioned once in a while when discussing our country's struggle for independence against Japan.

With the whole "Obama Fried Chicken" thing, I truly think the owner of the restaurant was unaware that he was playing into stereotypes. I believe he wanted to become a KFC location, and when he couldn't, decided to make his own version, and Obama was just a popular public figure so he thought it would bring traffic to his place. I still don't condone his actions of it, but I do think he was very unaware that he was playing into super harmful stereotypes, I don't even think he fully understood how much legal trouble he'd get in for making a KFC rip off either

What's even funnier about the bootleg Buc-ee's name is that when you pronounce it in Spanish, it sounds familiar (and possibly in reference) to the name, "(Los) Bukis", which is the name of a popular Mexican pop band from the 1970's. If anything, not only would they have been in litigation trouble by the Texas company, but also by the record label that owns Los Bukis.

The Bucees bootleg is extra funny if you understand the cultural implications, in Mexico we actually have a very famous singer Marco Antonio Solis whose nickname is "el buki", he sports a mullet f you were wondering, I think they thought it was a funny coincidence and said well let's combine both without thinking that the original store would try to sue.

Disney takes the whole "rules for thee but not for me" to a whole new level.

im surprised that 'The Copycats' episode from TAWOG didnt make the list, considering it was kinda big... for the few that don't know: some animators in China wanted to advertise some product via a cartoon, but they copied TAWOG characters to do so (tweaked obv, but kept the same premise)... CN caught wind of it & iirc put out a C&D, but China didnt follow through... So TAWOG took it in their own hands & released a few episodes specifically targeting them, basically saying "oh you like to copy? copy this then bitch" (TAWOG made an episode referencing the TSM, self explanatory) i have no fuckin clue what happened to those animators now

As someone who worked in a warehouse where Bukee’s clothes were made, the company isn’t a good place so I’m not shocked over the case against the Gator place. The people who make their clothes are trapped in a warehouse with a lot of questionable things going on.

Wavy, the Buk-IIS in Mexico is using play on words. One for Buc-EES in Texas and the other for a band in Mexico known as “Los Bukis” pronounced (book-eez). That’s why the modified logo has a mullet as the band members all had mullets.

He should've included that one story that happened in the UK, it took place in 2017 I believe, but an app on the google play store appeared. It was a "call Blaze and the Monster Machines' app, and some parents downloaded it for their kids. They thought they'd be calling Blaze, but the app was much more evil then that. The call would instead come from someone named Slappy, and Slappy would proceed to say he'd stab you with a knife. Yeah, I feel bad for the kids that had to hear that, thankfully, a lot of parents reported the app and it got removed.

I think it's hilarious when parents complain on social media about how people can turn kid shows into twisted nightmares. It really drives home that 1) parents aren't smart enough to discern or research that any kid show that pops up on a random RU-vid channel isn't the real thing, 2) they act like they haven't been on internet long enough to realize that the internet is still the wild west, or 3) they truly don't want to spend time with their own kids

If there was one bootleg that should've been talked about, it would be the vast majority of LEGO bootlegs. Mainly the one I would've focused on would be Lepin, a Chinese bootleg that copied actual sets, got raided, and their boss thrown in jail.

The reason the mullet was placed on the redesigned Mexican "buk-iis" is because there is a famous singer nicknamed "el buki", from that same state of Michoacán where the store was, who famously has rocked a mullet since birth

Of the wide variety of bootleg products out there on the market, some of my favorite are 90's era DragonBall Z/GT action figures that came out of Mexico. The quality of these varies wildly and usually are not the best, but they were known for making figures of characters that some actual toy companies with the real license never bothered with. This was before the series really took off in the US as well. A lot of toy bootleggers make seemingly nonsensical or head-scratching decisions about what they bring to market. It can be funny to see what all is out there, though I'm sure the licensed IP marketers aren't laughing about it.

on the 'nazi-chic' topic, I went to Japan in 2014 and there was a visual kei band my friend and I went to see because we'd been given free tickets at a gig the previous night, and the band were wearing Nazi inspired outfits and tried very hard to get us to Nazi salute (we stood out being the only foreigners there) to the music and all the fans were doing it... we're both british and it was very uncomfortable 😬 there were quite a few visual kei bands who used nazi theming in their stage costumes in the past, not sure how much it's used now-a-days, but it was explained to me by some japanese fans that japan didnt teach much about world war two because japan had been on the nazi's side and they didn't want to teach it now because it made them look bad. i guess the same way many countries sweep their past atrocities under the rug (like here in the UK when I was in school and did history through GCSE we weren't taught anything about our colonization and attempts at it across most of the world, it was mostly romans invasion of the UK and then world war 2)

There is a small Polish grocery store in my town called Lasuch that uses a Smurf with a surfboard as their mascot. You can even see the Smurf if you look up screenshots of the shop. They have gotten away with it for 4-5 years so far. There is also a window cleanining service that uses Gaston Lagaffe (a French comic book character) as their mascot, though i don't know how long they have been around for. I see their work truck pretty regularly though.

God the menu on the Rusty Krab is HEAVILY on point with the Spongebob brand and so on the nose with Mr. Krabs's character. I love it haha.

Mexican here, I'm pretty sure that the Bukiis guys were trying to do some art word play fusion between the actual store chains and a Mexican music group called Bukis, funny enough, they do sport some nasty mullets so I'm pretty sure the "rebranding" was a way to alude more to the band side of it to avoid issues with the store.
