Saw them open for the Byrds and Lee Michaels in 69, "When I metcha babe", was fantastic live, remember their puffy pirate shirts. Still a great band live! Thanks for the memories.....have my LP's in storage.

This is actually one freaking hell of an album by an amazing group of musicians -- from start to finish. A great song cycle. These are wonderful segues. They took a bunch of otherwise stand-alone pop songs & injected so much creativity & balls into their arrangements that you have to listen to the whole album to enjoy it properly. The finale of the Spanish classic "Recuverdas De Alhambra," is just a beautiful genius ending. So good, I go through the entire album just to get to that ending. These guys knew what they were doing. No limp vocals here. The piano is exceptional throughout. Some great FM radio stations played it & I found it in Woolworths for a dollar. I scooped it up like a thief thinking it was a mistake. But it was just a dollar & the cashier smiled. I went back & got an earlier Illusion LP at full price. Sold. This was epic stuff. At this time I was discovering other bands too that didn't fit their original mold -- Strawberry Alarm Clock -- check their "Me & the Township" -- aggressive & hot. The pop band Climax cut a tune called "Park Preserve." Masterful musicians. Exciting. And Johnny Maestro's Brooklyn Bridge had an instrumental cut called "Upside Down, Inside Out," -- another eye-popping surprise, especially the coda. No R&R Hall of Fame for Illusion or any of these exceptional bands -- but we know they belong there & that's enough.

Saw these guys headline a music festival in Doylestown, PA out in a field somewhere around there, early 70's, maybe earlier. After that we bought their albums and played (in our band) some of their tunes. Smokin hot, precise, and tight. Went to Sam Ash in NY or Long Island (where they were from) and ran into the bass player who worked there. Great guy. Great Band. We moved our band to LI too. Won't say who we were though.

An edit job done hastely and not wel. The gaps are easy to spot if you listen with earphones between 2->3 and 5->6->7

Thebestdream I had, these are top notch bands you are resurfacing for us. I'm not sure where my music direction would have gone if I had heard these nondescript bands back in the day when they came out. The problem is, most of what everybody was influenced by was corporate pushed musical groups. I'm not saying the bands I grew up loving are just the lucky few that made it big in the financial world are better, it's just all the music we missed like this is just as important and influential as the ' Purple, Hendrix, Floyd, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc. offerings were (are).
@jnagarya519
@jnagarya519 4 года назад
Black Sabbath is gawd awful. Just because the corporations say it's good doesn't make it so.
@JackHaveman52
@JackHaveman52 2 года назад
@@jnagarya519 In the winter of '71, me and some friends were at a record store and one of them bought Black Sabbath "Paranoid". None of us had ever heard of Black Sabbath before. (small town Ontario kids) We went to his house later and listened to all the new albums that we bought. Some of the albums were so awful, they didn't make through the first listen. "Paranoid" stuck and we listened to it all the time. This had nothing to do with "corporate" influence. We loved it. A year later, we went to the same record store and one of us bought an album by Gypsy, their second release, called "In the Garden". We'd never heard of them before, either and we all loved it. In fact, years later, after one of passed away and we were dispersed all over the country, one of us posted that album on Facebook in his memory. Gypsy never reached any real fame but it was one our favourites. You had to be good in order for us to listen to it all the time. The corporate regime didn't tell us what to like. In fact, "Thebestdream I had" has their debut album in his playlist. I like it too but it just didn't grab us like "In the Garden" did.
@jnagarya519
@jnagarya519 2 года назад
@@JackHaveman52 The problem with "Back Sabbath" was the paranoia and turning to the negative. In that they were knock-offs of "The Rolling Stones," who had a great success at Altamont with their destructive negativity.
@JackHaveman52
@JackHaveman52 2 года назад
@@jnagarya519 I talked about the negativity of the Paranoid album at the time. It was the one criticism that I had. However, times were a little pessimistic back then. Vietnam, the Cold War, the very overt threat of a nuclear holocaust and the goal of world domination by the communists, seemed rather overwhelming. But, we all agreed that "Paranoid" was also hard driving and the rhythms made the album a lot of fun. It was the only album from Black Sabbath that I really like. Maybe the negativity angle seemed a little overworked in their other albums and lent an air of predictability to their work. It was good for a bit but let's move.....that was my sentiment. But, to each their own.
@jnagarya519
@jnagarya519 2 года назад
@@JackHaveman52 I was born in 1948. Do the math. I grew up with all that, including the exaggerated threat of "communists". Do you not realize that those who sling the epithet "communists" the most tend to be Fascists? And who was the enemy during WW II -- "communists" or Fascists? It's also a long history of Fascists calling EVERYONE who disagrees with them "communists" -- even when they aren't "communists". I point to Reagan and his ilk on that point. Dylan wrote about the negativity in the world -- without being negative. Therre's enough negativity in the world without musicians swallowing and regurgitating it. And as the 1970s were an era of paranoia, it didn't help to repeat and amplify "reasons" for paranoia. All that does is exacerbate and subvert social trust. What actually happened is that when "The Beatles" broke up, "rock" music splintered, and became largely a freak show, a competition to see who could be the most shocking, because none could meet the challenge, the high bar, set by them. It got worse in the 1980s and 1990s when it became increasingly splintered, to the point that nearly every band claimed to be their own "genre". There are more names for "rock" than there are KINDS of rock. In 1968, we were debating where "hard rock" -- which was later relabeled "metal" -- originated: with "The Kinks," or "The Yardbirds". What had been "ballads" became relabeled "soft rock". Etc. I grew up with music from earliest memories. "Black Sabbath" and their ilk were an immediate turn-off; there's enough negativity in the world without voluntarily indulging in it.

Not really BOC started in 1967 the first Illusion record Did you See Her Eyes came out in 1969 BOC became national super stars with several hits records and heavy MTV rotation . The Illusion played mostly local NY / Long Island clubs their records like this one was not a national hit record and did not sell 100K copies. I was in a band who played a lot of gigs in NY with The Illusion. I can't figure out why they did not become a big hit group they were great live , looked good and their record was good. For some reason outside of NY people just did not like the NY vibe in the 60's early 70's so many bands in NY were awesome , but never became national. The Vagrants , Hassels , Good Rats , Zebra , Sir Lord Baltimore , Family Jewels , Rich Kids to name a few .

@@franksaladino3938 BOC on MTV?? Their last hit was "burnin for you" which came out before MTV was even available in the NY/NJ market.

Did anyone remarked the strange similarity between the final part of "Stairway to heaven" (Led Zep) and the track "Dr. Stone" ? ...it's the first time in my life i can hear this album and as a old fan of Led Zeppelin i feel a little bit strange and dubitative ! ^^

Do you mean both guitar soli (climax). I think I recognize what you mean but it seems to me very much coincidentially. I fear those slight/ short similarities might happen easily concerning music.😦

Led Zep, while great, "stole" a butt load of their music from other people. (Who was it that said, "Artists always borrow, great artists steal.") Having listened very intensely to pop and rock music for 50 some years, I can no longer listen to ANYTHING without hearing an influence, or an echo, or an outright borrowed phrase, riff, chord progression, or lyric. There's nothing wrong with that. All current culture is built on prior culture. All current knowledge is built on prior knowledge. There is nothing new under the sun.
