In the early 20th century, a man named Martín Ramírez left his life in Mexico behind, seeking opportunity across the border in the United States. (Images shift to grainy footage of a crowded mental hospital ward.) But fate had a different path in store for him. Diagnosed as a catatonic schizophrenic, Martín spent most of his adult life confined within the walls of institutions.
Yet, within those walls, a unique artistic voice emerged. Using scraps and discarded materials, Martín Ramírez built a world of his own - a world filled with fantastical creatures, religious iconography, and memories of his homeland.
In this video, we explore the remarkable life and art of Martín Ramírez, a self-taught genius who found solace and expression in the most unimaginable places.

Better Help is trash - doesn't vet providers etc. Plenty of horror stories out there if you care to look. No shade on taking the sponsorship, get your bag and all, but people should know to steer clear of that sheisty shit.

Most mental health is trash imo. Most scientific progress is made by observation of different subjects. How can you really understand the experience if you haven't indulged in the mind state. Similar to being an expert of a landscape of a place you've never experienced.

I tried to hook up with Better Help, filled out all their paper work that took me an hour to do, only to get to the end to find out they didn't take my insurance?? I have Medicare, you would think they would take that but I think they only want cash and they were VERY EXPENSIVE! Maybe that's just an American thing. Like across the pond, don't they have free health care? Better Help is a scam in America.

I like the genuine emotions depicted here. It gives us a glimpse of his life. I'm not trying to be insensitive with this statement, art gets better the more we suffer. There's a desperation to tell the story of the unseen. There is a quality that's hard to find otherwise. Some of Picasso's best works were during the war in my opinion. Guernica is a POWERFUL piece of work.

There seems to be a common theme among talented and prolific artists having mental instability. Schizophrenia is a terrible mental health disease but it is amazing to see the world through someone's eyes who has it, especially through their artistic expressions. They often say that art is inspired from extreme emotional distress or hardship so being confined to a padded cell would inspire wild imaginative stimulation.

I've often wondered myself about this very issue, seeing how his Mexican family & kin could really have benefited from the additional income generated by sales of his work. It could very well have something to do with the maddening complexities of national & international copyright law. Or maybe it's just the rank unfairness of the damn world.

Dude you NEED to do a vid on Trevor brown. It'll be hard without getting demonized but ppl don't rlly talk abt him despite how influential his art has been on other artists and aesthetics in general. He's a creepy egotistical nut job but his art is undeniably amazing. He tries to be stealthy and pull the "quit sexualizing my art" while also opening discussing his creepy tendencies. He's not a good person but he creates some crazy good stuff. I wouldn't necessarily call it compelling, there's not a lot of subtlety but as a csa survivor it puts me in this weird headspace. Like, there's no doubt hes a creepy mofo but regardless I devour his works. Anywho, plz make a vid on him. Trevor brown (embarrassingly) and Yuko tatsushima are my two artists. You've covered Yuko, but haven't covered Trevor. He's pretty frowned upon due to the content of his works and I've frequently heard him referred to as "wasted potential". I don't necessarily think that's true though because I've found that the best pieces come from those who have serious trauma and/or mental issues and whatever Trevor's got going on is a serious mental issue. I don't find a lot of art fueled by a paraphilia that's genuinely interesting to look at. It all tends to be very surface level and very "Ah yes, genitals" but Trevor brown utilizes this beautiful juxtaposition of cutesy imagery and blatant fetishism that just is unparalleled. Yes, there's other amazing artists that paint sad big eyed girls with surrealistic themes, but none do it like him.
