We live on 2.5 acres. We mow the part around the house for our daughter, dog, and chickens. No watering, no pesticides, just mow whatever is there. The rest of our property is just whatever happens but we'll be clearing a part of of it to prepare garden for spring. Tried to start a garden this year but we had my daughter at the same time and I was in no shape to be gardening after a c-section 😅

I grew up in a house with a very shaded front garden and it was mostly moss with some violets and a failed attempt at a lawn. I remember loving to play in the mossy areas because they were so much softer

We live in a very urban area since I don’t drive and I walk my sons to school daily. We have a very small yard but it HAS to be short or we’ll get fined. This is Michigan in the USA though and I’m not aware of others. We do however grow food the best we can and I love being able to throw food scraps to our squirrels and birds. It gives me a strong sense of purpose somehow in this big world.

I really think that a good idea to start shifting this practice in a more sustainable way (even if you own a big land and you don't want to or you can't grow crops, for example) is to promote big gardens, full of variety of trees and flowers, like here in Italy. They look amazing and the time to take care of them would be the same as it would take to mown a lawn ☺️ Also, great topic. Thank you ✌️

That’s basically what I do. We moved onto our property 6 years ago. We mow our grass but it’s it. We have 2 gorgeous water oak trees on our property and refuse to use pesticides or anything that could possibly hurt the trees. We plant easy maintenance flowers and other plants don’t require anything other than the rainfall and sunlight to grow. We also have fruit trees that were already on the property. We have a ton of dandelions in our lawns but we utilize that in making teas and oils. My mother uses tons of pesticides and chemicals to make her lawn so unnaturally green and it irks me 😂 I’m at my home walking outside and picking things from the ground to make salads. She has to go to the store to buy hers bc she’s killed everything

Great topic! Lawns are a perfect example of how we, mostly the rich and white, are trying to force nature into being less wild, just because we can, and not realizing how dumb it is both to the ecosystems but also to ourselves. Arrgh..

Here are some things we have done since we moved into our house last Nov to have a more sustainable yard: 1. When we moved in, there was zero actual garden, our whole yard was just lawn. We converted probably about 1/4 of the space to wildlife garden, and I am planning to convert more to vegetable/ fruit garden next summer. 2. All of our lawn maintenance tools are electric (battery powered). As an added bonus, we installed solar panels on the roof, so our house electricity is all run on solar. 3. We have used zero pesticides in our yard. 4. We have never watered the lawn. Fortunately we live in a pretty temperate area, so it’s not really necessary, but even when there was a dry spell this summer and it started to get a bit brown, still didn’t water it. It’s not really that big of a deal, it’ll green up again quickly when it does rain. 5. We don’t mow too often or cut the grass too short. On average, our lawn is probably 3-6 in. tall at any given time. (It’s a little hard to tell because the grass starts to fall over and lay flat-ish when it reaches a certain height). 6. We leave all grass clippings from mowing in the grass (as an added bonus - this is also good compost for the lawn and the lawn will be healthier as a result). 7. We compost all yard waste. If we have room for it, we throw it in our pile or if it’s a lot of stuff we take it to our city’s compost heap (this is a different place than the land fill). Just wanted to share in case anyone finds it helpful!

Preach 🙌🏻 I'm so glad you're talking about this! We literally just moved into a new house today, and the neighbours either side have close cropped perfectly neat lawns and rectangular hedges or a plastic lawn 🤢 The biggest irony is that they have snail and butterfly ornaments, but there is snail killer in the shed. God forbid nature did its thing, right? We are planning on establishing a food garden that is wildlife-friendly, growing a mix of vegetables (especially those that tend to come plastic-wrapped) and flowers for pollinators and put a pond in. I just really hope we don't run into problems with the neighbours and they don't mind us being a bit more wildlife-friendly, wish me luck 👩🏼‍🌾🐝🌱

Our "lawn" is cut at 6 cms with a robot lawnmower that runs on electricity, just by cutting it at this height there are a lot of moss, wildflowers and tiny mushrooms that thrive with the grass, that we never water, it looks so much better than a traditional lawn. We also have large sections that we just let grow wild as meadow land.

We have a small garden but didnt really do anything with it, by now (7 years later) there is no grass left, just mostly moss, dandelions and clover. Every year some flowers suddenly pop up and we think: ‘what is that and how did it get here?’ and most of the time they look so pretty! 😃 But most happy i am with the moss, its so soft on your feet and it looks so pretty, sometimes there are small purple flowers in them, and its fun to see the birds tearing it up in small peaces while looking for worms.

Thank you for this topic!!! Blame falls on HOAs here in the states. (Howdy from Texas, y’all) If the front yard isn’t a certain percent of lawn- which has to be of a certain grass shorn at a certain height and kept “weed” free- we get fined. We also need to rake away leaves. This one makes sense, considering buildup of leaves and debris can wash into the drainage system and screw things up for everyone (but this is exactly what happens with pesticides so…irony.) The front gardens are also often restricted by the HOA- has to be kept tidy, etc. and that often translates to no food-gardens or wildflowers in the front. I grow herbs in mine, and cultivate “weeds” in the back yard. I absolutely hate this part of living in the suburbs. But at least we have somewhat smallish lawns in this neighborhood, so not as much mowing or poison per household (And yes, I’ve noticed this particular neighborhood seems to be mostly white)

The house we purchased 5 years ago had a pristine front lawn. It's now a big veggie patch with loads of birds, lizards, bees etc visiting. When peep pop round they start giving advice to get the grass back! We respond a shocking NO, they don't understand. Just hope to convince more folk to do this. Thank you so much for making this video! The concept of lawns and the expectation of having a “well-kept” lawn needs to end. I have a lawn and I live in a subdivision where I have an HOA and because of my HOA I can’t do any landscaping or change my lawn with out the HOA’s approval. I’m partially tempted to just make it a little plant oasis and let my HOA fine me, but more realistically I plan to plant peach trees and blackberry bushes and a garden next spring and hopefully transform my front yard to some extent. I wish it was easier to not have a lawn, I wish I didn’t have to jump through so many hoops, I wish I didn’t have to worry about my house losing value by getting rid of my lawn. But I’m gonna try to do the best I can with it. I already use a lawn mower that doesn’t require gas or electric (the HOA and city require me to mow my lawn) and I definitely don’t use pesticides on my lawn

well... lower house prices means lower property taxes, am and less gentrification, maybe? :) Hopefully you can find some loopholes in the hoa rules, maybe plant some things that look ornamental but have value to you and wildlife, or otherwise get around them, and succeed in continuing to improve this space.

I'd be careful with fruited trees out the front, they can cause damage to passing cars if the fruits drop on the windows and cause car crashes, But yeah. The HOA sucks- I'm not American, and England doesn't really have much of a HOA (We have the council which has its own issues but isn't as bad as the HOA.) but my American friends get so annoyed when the HOA is mentioned. Even my friend who isn't into plants hates them for one reason for another. I was looking to find some way to help them find loopholes, like replacing the grass with a different species that's more colourful or something and I found something called Ruschia Nana. It's not much different from grass, but it's fire resistant, needs less water, doesn't grow over two inches, spreads somewhat similar to moss when it's dirt, stops 'weeds' from germinating so you don't have to maintain it as much *and* flowers whilst still having all of the visuals and walkability of grass. It's not much better than normal grass in terms of productivity, but if you're looking for something abit more substantive than grass, You can have a look at that. Here's a link to the video I found of it when searching: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-omT9k643oBw.html Edit: Oh, I also read up on them a little and found out that bees can produce honey with them. So yeah, I guess they're slightly more beneficial to the environment than grass is.

Thank you. Your video is very informative and beautifully edited. I added curves to my lawn by letting areas grow wild. The effect happier wildlife and happier neighbours who appreciate the combination of formal planting, cottage style planting and wild areas. Plus, it takes me a fraction of the time to cut the grass. As my grass is untreated I can compost it along with shredded paper, sawdust, cardboard and vegetable peelings. The compost is used to mulch the flower beds so I don't have to buy peat based 'compost' .

A lawn / grass is a beautiful landscape especially when it's long and wild with flowers 💐 and so on. My grandmother had a 2200m² garden she had Apple trees some Berry's and plums very old polish sorts also old peppermint sprayed neir the well she has also cultived flowers but the rest of the garden was wild and natural. In my home city I love gras especially when the flowers came out like Chamaemelum nobile I'm sad when they start mowning them especially in this hot days keep the grass long and natural it will probably cool the area

This is such an interesting topic! Thank you for the video and suggestions 🍃 In my family summer house we do have some areas with lawn, and while we aimed to have a perfect green lawn 15 years ago when my dad built the house, now it definitely looks more ‘natural’. There are lots of small flowers and different grass types (“weeds”) mixed around; it’s definitely not perfect in some areas with bald patches. We do clip our grass once in a while, but throw the clippings in our compost bin or dry it to use as mulch in the garden. And we have a variety of flowers shrubs and trees in general 🌿🌳 and our doggies love to tumble around the grass 🐕 💚

Its hard because my initial idea was to rip it up and grow clover but it attracts mosquitoes which are already bad here and people want stupid grass so you always have to think of resale if its not your forever home so I think flower beds and fruit trees is a good mix. Lawns at my time were for kids to play on so they wouldn't get hurt. That been said I personally don't like lawns. You should watch Rob Green who got all he's food for a year from a homeowner. He torn up the lawn and made a food forest from that and other people places and wild food. My mother in law had to fight the home owners to put up wild grass because in California we have drought. The home owners wanted you to just have a dry ugly lawn. My mother in law won and kept here wild grass that looks beautiful. Thanks again.......

To me lawnd are not land I don‘t get something back. Children can play there safely even without needing to have an eye on them constantly, so one can, for example work in the garden to harvest your own food, while they are having fun together with other children from the neighborhood. This brings me joy, comfort and peace, which are so important for being mentally healthy.

@Trinity M I feel perfectly fine having a bit of lawn. The scynted bits are a great mulch and later on fertilizer for my garden, where I grow food. If I don't have that, I need to buy mulch from somewhere, which a) needs to travel, b) is harvested probably in an area which would give more to biodiversity and saving CO2, because they often use woods, or c) I can not grow much food from my garden, because it is evaporating more water an not holding it in the soil and have less nutrient in it, which will lead in the end to not fruitful soil which I will not harvest anymore and therefore become a grassland, which is not more beneficial from a agriculture and food-supply point of view then the lawn I have around my house (except you want to have there some animals...which anyway would not have the same amount of food from it). Lastly I have to say that I do not use pesticides, nor do I water the lawn, my lawn mower is electrical, charged with renewable energy. And as I said, while the children are playing outside, without me needing to be around them, I have time to harvest things. Leaving the children inside is not what I want, they shall be outside, but when else shall I find time to grow food, when I need to supervise them, while they are playing near the street. And one last thing: in the foreyard, there are trees and flowers, on the supporting walls are flowers, climbing plants which is a home for insects, lizards, etc., there is a bit of natural grassland with trees and bushes, so birds, mouses and so on have there place too, and there is a garden to grow a big part of our legumes and fruits, so I feel totally ok with having a few square meters of lawn (around 15 - 20% of all the surrounding space, including the vertical walls).

Great video, Gittemary! I keep trying to convince my landlords to stop fussing about their lawn, but.... they are not really hearing me. :( I'll tell you another thing that lawns do - they attract grubs, which in turn attract skunks, which dig up lawns to get their grub-by meals! :O I believe it is only grass that attracts the grubs, not other plants and flowers. The grubs go for the grass roots. So I believe we need to go back to our grass roots and let go of lawns! (Pun intended. ;) )

My mum tried to plant grass but it wouldn't grow so now we just have moss, daisies, random little plants and an apple tree. Our cat loves to play with the fallen apples and the trees require upkeep only once a year when they need to be cut and whenever you want to harvest - unlike a lawn that needs regular mowing. Our garden is quite small, yet we have several trees, a beet area, a sitting area and a compost. Imagine if every garden owner just had 2 trees and a tiny harvest area in their garden - the amount of new trees that would be planted and the amount of food that would be grown altogether is crazy. It used to be the norm to have a tiny garden to sustain your vegetable needs and to get by cheaper - still is in many parts of the world.

Here in Texas, I’m planning on turning my front lawn into a mini prairie. Prairies are the most endangered habitats here. Just have to make sure the city won’t fine me for having tall grasses and wildflowers.

My landlords lawn is incrimentally being eaten up by my native/food forest. I don't think they have noticed yet. You would not believe it was the same area from when we moved in. It is now an amazing hub of bees and frogs and birds and lizards and beetles and spiders and little creatures. I love it. And I've always hated lawn.

Um this girl is correct on some of her points but incorrect on many others. Such as what she call the princess tree, actually called Paulownia tomentosa. This particular tree is actually to some degree a life saver of the planet. Some only consider it invasive bc of how fast it grows, but it doesn't spread any different than say a maple tree, it just does so, much faster. Which also makes it a good thing, to use for building materials bc of how fast it grows. When cut down it comes back to full maturity in as little as 10 years. With big large green leaves and is also said to release more oxygen than others. Farmers are growing these trees bow for that reason. Anywho.... thought I'd share.

I dont completley agree that we dont get anything out of lawns. I who grow things uses the clippings and leafs to improve the soil between flowers under bushes and in my growing containers. Robotic lawnmowers actaully does this naturally that it leaves little grasscutting all the time which technically should improve the lawn it also gives it a bit of fertilisation. Personally i enjoy some nice smooth grass under my feeth when walking on my property :) You also dont need to use pestisides or alot of water if you really have done the foundations right so the grass can thrive. Also all of these data seems to stem from only how usa does their lawns. I bet it would be very different in other parts of the world. For me the best would be be alot more trees and flowers, bushes, water ponds etc in combination with lawns is the best :D
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 2 года назад
that was not quite what I meant when I said you don’t get anything from a lawn, you don’t get a product, or a yield and it does not give anything back per se. The reason why our bushes and flower benefit from grass clippings is because we removed anything else, so had there not been grass that wouldn’t have been an issue 🌿 however, sure we can do things different and make small changes, and of course I cannot include all variants of lawn keeping, this was to highlight some of the main issues with it: the monoculture, the water consumption (which is necessary in some climates where lawns are still mandatory), the pesticides (which is the norm in many places, which is why I think it is important to talk about) ☺️ Lastly, most of these studies are done in the US yes, and yes it might also look different elsewhere, however I recognise these same issues in Denmark

I will never understand the American obsession with lawns. In front of my family's house there is a lawn but I'm pretty sure it's natural because there are many native flowers and sometimes even mushrooms that grow on it and we basically never cut it unless the grass is starting to get rather high or when there are no flowers so we don't disrupt the pollinators. For the most part, our chickens are our lawnmowers lol also, we didn't plant it, it was already there, along with fruit trees.

@@Gittemary 😂 let’s just say you are very versed in your (90%) old BS talking points but don’t have any idea about true modern landscaping architecture. You repeat 🔁 all the talking points and intentionally leave out the facts that lawns only use 3.5% of western states irrigation including CA, TX, NV, UT and AZ. Who use more water than every other state. If you completely changed every front yard, ball field, park and city landscape in America to Native species it would devastate microclimates and moreover the ecosystem with xeroscaping, overheated neighborhoods. This old way of thinking about lawns you perpetuate would hurt the climate and pesticide use more than simply leaving everything alone as is and slowly improve lawns with high quality drought resistant new grass cultivars, switch lawn equipment to battery operated solar charges equipment and use new irrigation systems for turf including subterranean irrigation for current lawn and new lawns. Please: learn what you are talking about and stop repeating guilt driven fascistic propaganda from the climate alarmists.
