Coming back to rewatch 5 years later. Literally my favourite play thru, ever.

Hey lionheart. A quick tip for artillery placement. It's better to place them on the flanks (left and right) of your army. You see, a direct hit on a line might hit 2-5 guys depending on how thin they have their lines, but by placing your artillery on the flanks you can get diagonal/horizontal hits that can go through an entire line. It's something the Germans implemented in WW2 with their MG's, but it applies to these type of artilleries as well. Just keep them defended so that the enemy doesn't send a rogue cav unit to take them out. Cheers.

Others will do it to us.” “Fred, you cannot expect your people to simply do nothing.” “The time is not right. The situation is still too unclear.” “You would let this man, the very symbol of anarchical revolution, have free reign of Europe! You would let some Corsican upstart humiliate a king, a king of Prussia no less, into silence!” “Well technically he’s an emperor now.” King Frederick William III looked up from his cup of wine to see a scowl plastered over the face of his wife across the dinner table “Oh come on Louise. It would be a good sign to your fellow monarchs that you have not turned your back on them.” “It would be a gamble.” “Well, yes, but…” “A bigger gamble than you think. I know these men you speak of, and I know what drives them.” “Principle.” “Pride. They seem to think we still have Frederick’s armies, but they forget how they diminished during my father’s reign. The truth is that we do not have the military power to make such an audacious gambit.” “And what good will waiting do for our odds?” Frederick William sighed and filled his cup. Holding it out to Louise, he looked her in the eyes “This is our armies. In fact, that’s too much--” he took a drink “this is our armies. We’re at peace, we have all our strength, maybe we can gamble.” Louise looked unimpressed. “Now, let’s say we join this war against monsieur Bonaparte. The very best we can hope for is victory, right?” In lieu of a response, Frederick poured some of the wine onto the table “We take casualties. But we win. Then we march all the way to Paris, winning victory after splendid victory, and put the Bourbons back on the throne.” he continued, spilling small amounts as he spoke. He held up the cup again. “And now Vienna looks across the way and thinks ‘my my my, what an empty cup those Prussians have. I hear Silesia is very nice this time of year.’” Frederick smiled as Louise rolled her eyes emphatically “The point is, we wouldn’t have the strength to pose as a power in whatever struggle comes next. Now let’s assume we lose.” Frederick poured the rest of the cup on to the table, and watched as the drops spattered on the table cloth, staining the white fabric. He shook the cup for good measure, and let it roll lazily across the table “We’ll be eaten alive. We’ll lose Poland for sure, and we’ll be powerless to stop whatever other demands are made of us. We’re not strong right now, but if we lose your gamble we will be rulers of nothing but the dirt. I won’t do it Louise; I will not risk that.” Prussia had long been in a precarious position. A relatively new European power, Prussia was surrounded by the long-established great powers that had dominated the continent for centuries. To the south, Prussia’s oldest rival Austria posed an ever-present threat. Even now that the countries were united against the French menace, Austria had not forgotten the loss of Silesia, that had been one of their most prosperous provinces until Frederick the Great had taken it for Prussia in a startlingly swift and effective invasion. As long as a greater threat existed, Prussia could rest easy. But that could all change in a fortnight, and neither country would forget it. To the east loomed the gargantuan Russian Empire. Despite holding sway over the largest nation on earth, the Russian Tsars were always looking to prove their legitimacy as European monarchs. This ambition made European conquest an appealing goal for Russia, as their ravenous absorption of Poland had made clear. If they chose to, Russia could amass tremendous power, more than enough to sweep Prussia aside in their current state. To the north, the battered nation of Sweden nursed its wounds. Its place on the Baltic sea had been shattered under Russian aggression, and now a much weaker nation looked to re-establish the prestige they had enjoyed in years past. Their traditional friendly relationship with France made their joining with Napoleon and subsequent invasion a worrying possibility, one that would likely go unopposed by Austria or Russia. The western France completed the encirclement of Prussia. The chaos that had swept the Bourbon country had initially been welcomed by Prussia, who saw the weakening of one of Austria’s strongest allies as a fantastic opportunity. But when Austria offered a much more attractive deal, in which Prussia would join them in war against France, Frederick William had aligned his country against the revolutionaries. Prussia hadn’t played the biggest part in the failed attempt to stop France, but to the now-emperor Napoleon Bonaparte any opposition to France’s expansion was treated with equal hostility. If he decided that Prussia was a hindrance, he would doubtlessly throw himself into a war with the same enthusiasm he had already displayed in Italy and Egypt. As for Prussia itself, the country that had once prided themselves on its military prowess under Frederick the Great had fallen substantially since the great monarch’s passing. Frederick William II and his son had been uninterested in military expansion, allowing their armies to lapse and fall behind its neighbours. If Prussia could be counted among the Great Powers of Europe, it was the least of them, and the trying times in which Frederick William III found himself were very much unsuited to the family man of Prussia. His advocates would call him the nurturing father of his nation, but his critics held him as weak-willed, and not nearly tough enough to follow in the footsteps of Frederick the Great. In the early weeks of 1805, following the coronation of Napoleon as Emperor of France, Frederick William entered into a series of diplomatic negotiations to strengthen their position. In a display of the double-dealing that Prussia had become known for in recent years, Prussia secured trade deals and alliances with Russia and Austria, while also making trade deals with the enemy of both nations, the Ottoman Empire, and considering an early land grab against Saxony, an affront against the Holy Roman Empire which Austria’s emperor still claimed to rule. He also secured an alliance with Britain, after which the offers of trade sent to France were dismissed immediately.

I hadn't realized how much more satisfying the total warhammer cavalry charges are.

Cavalry Wedge formation is not worth using, too slow, and it is pretty unhistorical in this era. Don't put infantry in front of artillery, unless the guns are howitzers or you will get friendly fire losses. Forts are not especially buggy in Napoleon, in fact Napoleon has far, far, less bugs than Empire. Totally agree with you about a 19th Century Victorian historical TW, would be great.

You can switch the building type of your member´s house in Saxony & Thuringia to a collage to gain one extra research slott. I find that better in the long term than new spawn spies : )

I'd be fine with them returning to having buildings outside of your settlements IF you could see them all on the same UI panel a la Rome 2 and Attila. I hate having to manually check each one of them.

I'm a bit late to this series, but it's incredible. This game has always been close to my heart. I look forward to seeing all the content of this channel. 5*! I've scarcely found a one hour video I've watched through complete. This was well worth it.

Back a few years back before i had a proper PC to play games i had Empire and eventually came around to getting Napoleon. Empire has always been my favorite Total War (yes i know its one of the worst ones its just alot more fun for me). However, Napoleon is the more polished version and it was my first Total War game where i completed a campaign as Prussia! I love Prussia, and the German Empire it later became! If i may provide some insight to playing as Prussia, keep good relations with the Coalition forces and most importantly the East, wipe out the minor nations around you to get some experience and boost your economy abit. When at war with France, always take a defensive standing, while you army is strong, the French have numbers and many talented and strong generals. Use everything to your advantage. After watching your 3rd episode, i suggest you build up your armies, and go on the defensive, ive always used the forests to set up ambushes against your enemies. Focus on Hannover, but do not let the enemy get around you and go after your capital. For Prussia is destined for greatness!

Some points that I thought would be better to mention. 1. Cavalry charges work differently in Empire and Napoleon. They will initiate the charge not when they are about to clash with the target, but when charge order(double click) is given. So, if you give the charge order when there is too much distance, the charge would be drained out by the time they engage in combat. The key to cavalry charge in E and N is running the cavalry close to the target, then when they are close enough, give the charge order while they are running. Plus, this happened in the beginning of your previous Maratha campaign. You figured it out after some time but seem to have forgotten it by now. 2. Isn't Mecklenburg a better choice, since they have a port so that you can get more naval trade? Saxony isn't bad but I don't think they are more worthy than a port. 3. Pronunciation of Blucher's name. I can't explain it exactly but in German it goes like "Gep/hart von Bl/ui/her". "c" in Blucher is pretty much omitted. In English, in the movie Waterloo they say it like "Blue/ker". Choose what suits you.

I miss playing this game, put a lot of hours and role-playing into it but there wasn't enough factions to start with so sadly I left it , I love the combat and naval . Big improvement from Empire title. Total war in general turn my mind from empty jar to loving history . So I do hope CA makes at least one more historical title, a huge one . Dlcs or small titles won't cut it . I want something big as Empire but with more political, better tec system better cut scenes and just an upgrade . Hey, war hammer isn't bad now the full game map is out and mods do help the older titles keep it going from being bored to death with same play through. Great vid loin, glad you made this series. :)

Trade Ships sent to the north sea can work pretty well. A Prussian fleet is also a good diea

Also, a note on the outer buildings within the provinces of Empire and Napoleon, I think it would be pretty cool if they were brought back, as long as you can actually capture or sack them. So, if you took a farmstead outside of Paris, you would get the option to occupy the farm, and it would provide resources such as food/money/etc to your empire. Or you sack the place, and get some money.

Ach So! This will be interesting, Lionheart! First, for pronunciation purposes, just call the Siegessäule "Lizzy". Everyone in Berlin does. I am being serious. It's just near the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin. It's nice. Used to live near there. Just call her Lizzy. Will be interesting to see how it goes as Prussia definitely got steamrolled by Napoleon & France in the War of the Fourth Coalition, so best of luck! (Prussia started it by massing in Saxony, so you're taking quite an historical approach I see! :D ) I also wonder if you will have the option to get the Super Tall Prussian Soldiers regiment (actually called the Potsdamer Riesengarde, but still they were supposed to be super tall). Glad you have a weather eye on the Austrians. The French were a flash in the bucket in the Napoleonic wars, but Austria was the true enemy of Prussia. Prussia was very much the "Reyne's" to the Habsburg "Lannisters" for centuries until they overtook them. Feeling bad for lionheart because I remember when he got 100,000 viewers regularly. Let's hope for a rise after this let's play because he deserves that viewership, he worked hard to earn it. I remember him making videos while studying at uni. That dedication deserves so much more.

If I recall correctly, you can increase your artillery's accuracy if you target fire the ground instead of the units. This also allows you a greater opportunity to attack in close range with cannons, since you can estimate the trajectory that would go through most units.

Here's a little advice that I've heard from other RU-vidrs is that wedge formation should only be used against Calvary. You want to use normal formation against infantry so that you can spread your formation to get at more infantry if you know what I mean.

lionheartx10 I'm a bit late, but been looking back over yer NTW vids after watching Sharpe for like the 100th time. Just wanted to say that I love you chose to do a Prussia LP. Great Britain, Prussia and Sweden are the only 3 nations I ever pick and I always conquer Britain last.

lionheart, u forgot the merchantman, spend money to earn money, the trade route is vital in the first few turns, it could boosts your troop production

has anyone else ever noticed it seems like the AI can read minds or something? they always (almost) counter any order given. Lionheart's first battle, gave a fire order from arty to their cav, instantly their cav foolishly charged. if left alone with no order given, the cav would've stayed in place defending their arty.

Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided but by iron and blood. (Eisen und Blut)

I love the crackling of the guns

When playing Prussia, invading Denmark is a really good startup. Once having control of their capital, there is not much they can do, since Sweden also go to war with them, after that their remaining region is Iceland, miles away. If you follow this strategy Great Britain jumps on you really quickly, they send a full army by boat to Berlin. If you are skilled enough you can fight it off with half size army. Canister shot of course... always research canister shot first. It is better to be at war with Britain since they are two boat turns away rather than with Austria... since Poland always gangs up with Austria against you.

I think it would be awesome if they made a Total War game set in the Victorian era. They should probably use the graphics from Empire and Napoleon, and Darthmod sized units, and 40 unit armies. That way it'd be closer to how battles were back then without putting too much pressure on the computers. I think it would really be challenging for players to command forces of that size.

Don't worry about defenses for your canons if they're horse drawn, like it says on the description, better to have the mobility than slightly better defenses should you get into a sticky situation

the general Blucher is an intresting guy, if you check his history he started out as a Swedish private and then after being beaten by the prussians joined them, he ended up the field marshal of the Prussian forces during Waterloo

Just starting your Playthrough ( Aug / 2018 ) after too many years away from TW games. I am having to learn the basics all over again, so do you recommend the mods you are using or go vanilla to start. Now I am retired I have the time to play the way I wished I could have years ago ... comments,encouragements or screw off's are appreciated.

If upper class rebels, and they win, your monarch is replaced. If lower class rebels your country name and flag changes(if possible) but it also changes to republic. At least in Empire TW.

I've also started a Prussia campaign using the same mods myself, although I'm trying to ally myself with the French camp rather than the coalition since its not a popular or an easy route to take. So far i manged to ally myself with Spain and Batavian but France is still untrustworthy of me although we have been allies on and off. I've also annexed Saxony and mecklenburg and changed to a republic.

If you want a good tip on pronunciation I'd recommend watching German films or shows. As a kid a show called Derrick was one of my favorite, very cheesy but good detective show. For films I'd recommend watching Der Üntergang with German speech and another 3 part film is Generation War is excellent. Have a good one Lion and good luck with the campaign.

Speaking from experience playing as Prussia on this mod. You will inevitably go to war with Austria considering you need to unite all of the German states. If you want to minimize the diplomatic effects, try and aid them first against France. After I made peace with France, Austria broke their alliance with me and I was able to sweep up some territory in the war with them. I had built up my industry and was able to offer them a load of money in turn for peace and another alliance then went to war again with France. Consider offering some territory you took from France in exchange for Austria's. During this whole time, I was playing nice with Russia (if they ask you to join them in a war, do it). Towards the end of my campaign I was on such good terms with Russia that I was able to avoid war with them and just bought the provinces that I needed from them. Definitely build up your industry early on, focus on banking houses and foundries before going to war against France and/or Austria. Your diplomacy may turn our different than mine but that seems to be fairly common on Darthmod Prussia.

throw as many trade ships as possible to those trade points north east of Britain. they're normally unused for many turns and the money received is astronomical! do it ASAP, but throw maybe 2-3 war ships as well.

You should do well against the cav if you use your square formation and place your artillery high and on the flanks protected by your new units.

Siegessäule(translates to "Pillar of victory"), a famous monument in Berlin. For pronounciation... errr... imagine it to be written "Sieges soile" with the e in both SiegEs and SoilE being pronounced.

I know this comment is very late in terms of having any impact on your campaign now but im throwing in a possible option anyway u could have gone for with regard to not upsetting and potentially damaging your diplomatic status with Austria and other allies by rushing in to take Saxony which did make perfect sense btw. I suspect you also know this but i wondered why u didn't try it in diplomacy to request Austria to stop trading with Saxony. This would have a made small positive impact on your reputation if Austria agreed and then u attacked Saxony so u were not invading an allies trade partner. Anyway still loving your vids whenever i do get some time to catch up and watch some of your latest TW series uploads.
