Wow! Thank you SO much for this super in-depth, knowledgeable (and flattering) analysis! I appreciate that a lot and it's also great input for my current work on the remake. I also fully agree to your comments on the Gothic 3 soundtrack. :) Thank you!

It was my pleasure, both to experience your work in these games (not to mention Risen) as well as to celebrate it in this video. I truly believe that the music in these games plays a major role in what makes them feel so atmospheric, immersive, and memorable, and thus so special to many of us. You did a fantastic job with it, so I'm glad to hear you'll be contributing on the remake, and look forward to hearing what you come up with!

Thank you Kai for creating a loving childhood memory for tens of thousands if not for hundreds of thousands of kids. While Gothic 1 and 2 was an amazing game on it's own, it was the music that made it unforgettable. Anytime I hear the soundtrack, all the good memories of playing this game start flooding my mind.

Every time i hear the Lobart's Farm theme. i immediately want to start a new playthrough... and it's not just that theme that always gets me to go back to Gothic or Gothic 2, it's most of the music in the first two games. The first Risen also nailed the soundtrack.

The music in Jharkendar is just so.... beautiful that I can spend my entire time just walking around and listening to the music as I walk through the various valleys and canyons and caves and beaches. Those vocals just got to me every time I go to this area. It also keeps a really nice emotion in each area, I feel disgusted walking through the swamps with it's music giving that creepy insect vibe, the pirates having a calm harmonica giving me a safe, calm almost homely feeling.

Yeah, Jharkendar is usually my favorite part and the highlight of my playthroughs. Also sitting at the pirate beach after a day of wading through shallow water looking for loot and the occasional monster slaying just feels so immersive.

In my opinion what separates Gothic from any other game IS the soundtrack. It has SO much character compared to any other RPG. I could tell you more or less exactly where i am without looking at the screen in any of the 3 games based on sountrack alone. Absolutely amazing

Along with sound design in general, music plays such a crucial role in game design that it's kind of baffling that we don't get more nuanced discussions on it. You did a wonderful job here, so thank you! I think Dark Souls is another good example of how ambiance and music work together to immerse players in the world. Most of the game has no music, which is mostly reserved for boss fights and the Firelink Shrine, but when it does show up, it's all the more powerful for that. I wish more games would adopt that sensibility.

Both the In Extremo performance and my old camp music are based on Herr Mannelig, which is an old folk song. That's why I could use it as a backbone to the camp music, and also to foreshadow and integrate the concert a little bit better.

Finally someone who speaks some sense about the Gothic soundtrack! Even though Gothic 3's is very well done, I even have some tracks on my phone that I like to listen to, but when playing the game it's just too "bombastic" and as you said, it can distract you. It also sticks out a lot from the original ambiance of Gothic 1 and 2, where you had much darker tones, while in Gothic 3 the entire game is made as if it was a big epic adventure and even the soundtrack itself is made this way. In a way, Gothic 3's soundtrack fits Gothic 3, because they are both supposed to be "the epic journey of a hero in a fantastic world" and not "the quest to survive in a brutal, unforgiving world" from Gothic 1 and 2. That is also why I didn't like Gothic 3 that much (but that's besides the point). From hearing that comparison between different tracks, I agree that "Soliloquy" sounds like something from Morrowind. To me, both Soliloquy and Magical Theme have this "epic journey" theme, just like Gothic 3's soundtrack has, although they are not that bad. If Gothic was a bit more like Morrowind (i.e. bigger open world, massive customization and character build choices, epic journey feeling) Soliloquy would be the perfect field exploration theme for it. But we all know that isn't the case :) Personally, I feel like Gothic 1 and 2's soundtracks are not appreciated enough, just because it's not made by an orchestra like it is in Gothic 3. I find that funny and a bit sad, because everywhere I look I see people like "Oh yeah Gothic 3's soundtrack is sooo beautiful definitely the best in the series" and when I say "No, actually I find Gothic 1 and 2's soundtracks to be way better" they just start to laugh and make comments like "Do you even have ears?! This soundtrack is ORCHESTRATED, not made with a computer!" and I'm just here like, really? Is that the only reason why it's sooo much better? Music in video games is not supposed to just "sound good", it sets the mood, the atmosphere. Again, Gothic 3's soundtrack is not bad, but it's still worse imho than in G1 and 2. Oh well, now when I get into a discussion with someone over the internet, I will definitely link them this video, maybe they will get something from it and learn to appreciate the older Gothic's genius soundtrack a little bit more :)

I just realized I've never played the add-on. I'm seeing these scenes in Jarkendar for the first time. My schoolmate lent me Gothic 2 and the add-on 16 years ago and left for Canada. For years the two boxes sat on my shelf till he came back and picked them up. The manual warned about the added difficulty, and as a kid I had mad respect for that. I barely beat Gothic 1 and 2 thanks to buggy final bosses. It's finally time to install the add-on.

Some music from other games that could potentially fit that specific gameplay fragment (imo) - 'Desert Dwellers' from Guild Wars Nightfall - 'Fortress of Jahai' from Guild Wars Nightfall - 'Caudecus' from Guild Wars 2 Living World season 3 - 'Dwarven Stone Upon Dwarven Stone' from Witcher 2 sounds very similar to G2 music in certain regards (it is more of an orchestrated melody but still).

The gothic 1 score is probably my favorite game soundtrack. Definitely the most rememberable for me. Especially the Herr Mannelig esc Old Camp, Valley of Mines and the title theme. Can't say that I remember a lot of the Gothic 2 score but that it fits perfectly into the game. The one thing I love the most about KaiRo's music for Gothic. Gothic 3 has a way more blown out, epic theme as you stated. The prime example is Vista Point - the most beautiful score in all of Gothic in my opinion. While actually fitting to the green land of Myrtana though. Great video! btw: Just noticed how shitty the english voice acting in the game is. Seems like they tried to mimic the perfect, exaggerated way of speech from the original version and failed completely.

You hit everything absolutely spot on. I think 1 and 2's soundtracks very intuitively interpret the themes and scenes you come across in each game, and the way the music adapts to different situations is masterfully done. I also really appreciate the small little "endings" to the music before the next loop starts. It's kind of this *sigh* pointing to the mundane aspects of the games, but the rest of the music brings sorrow, dread, hope, and relief at different moments.

Wow those 2 generic fantasy songs are really good. They don't fit the scenery but all are better than no music. I agree that music is often not mentioned in reviews, or nobody credits it as it can have quite a major subconscious impact on your enjoyment of a game. There are many cases where to me a game wouldn't be the same. Like say a fallout game, only due to a strong intro featuring an ink spot song, it grips me right before I even started playing the game for the first time (or first time i step out in the wasteland to be greeted by the world map and "moribund world"). Same goes for the Thief series. For some reason, in thief 1(coz mechanist theme didnt feel special to me in thief2), granted it's a combination of text, video and music, but yes, be it a hammerite themed mission, a keeper or pagan one, those verses coupled with the hammerite chanting and hammer banging, or the creepy sounds within the pagan theme, or keeper humming, right before a mission in the briefing, those make me shiver. Weird that cutscenes and music make half the reason why the game is so good. And the ambient during the missions, that's a big deal as well. Right after the tutorial, in lord bafford manor, that won me over. Reading into it, it gave me a sense that I was intruding in a very dangerous place, in the middle of the night, where most are sleeping. And that i was treading around a sleeping beast, ready to kill me if I accidentally woke it up. Felt very uneasy, thanks to the creepy piano strings or whatever it is called, typical horror movie stuff.

Music is just something I couldn't imagine playing games without. It applies everywhere, even with Strategy Games that don't actually need you to immerse yourself that deeply. It still helps. Take Stellaris as an example that features another great score. When a game didn't have a real soundtrack, I often played my own music in the background and - after I already stopped playing that game, if I listen to that song again, it will evoke thoughts of that game and its atmosphere or game play every single time without fail. The same thing happens when I listen to a song while I read a book. I can recall back to the time I read Eragon by listening to The Alchemist from Enigma, etc. Essentially, music is such an integral part of memory, that listening to it can trigger your brain to relive the moment. It is amazing. This is also why dementia patients are often still able to sing along with music like christmas songs, etc. If you ever have a grandparent or parent go down that path, make sure to ask them about their favorite music and play it for them later when they can't remember about it anymore. They'll appreciate it!

Gothic 1 and 2 used DirectX music engine, which was built around MIDI. This means that music you hear is actually hundreds of instrument samples played in real-time using MIDI instructions, i.e. you effectively run audio sequencer as you play a game! The super cool was that since music was programmatic, it allowed to introduce additional variations, include random motifs, change instrumentations, tempo etc. That's why main exploration music in Gothic 1 feels never ending, and yet not overly repetetive - since flute phrases and motifs are inserted at random intervals, thus making its shape slightly different every time it plays. Have you noticed smooth transitions between idle/fight music without fade-in/out? That's because transitions were played and rendered dynamically as one continuous track, in the same way as game world is rendered to your screen. It's actually disappointing to see that it was seldom used anywhere then, and just forgotten nowdays, even though the possibilities for interactive music design were just... immense. Instead, today all music in games is just pre-recorded, mixed and mastered tracks you can just play in your audio player Software they've used for composing was called Direct Music Producer, and it could be still found somewhere on the internet. I actually discovered music sequencing by digging into Gothic music files and figuring out how it actually works. It was a fun time, I even created a few tracks using samples from both gothic 1 and 2. Writing a music piece in that software isn't easy, and composer had to prepare and optimize his own set of samples, setup orchestrations and whatnot. I'm sure Kai Rosenkranz went through a hell getting those soundtracks done. It's "Strength through adversity", where the more effort one have to put into doing something, the more unique, distinct and original one would achieve (not necceserily high quality, but high concept instead). Sadly, nowdays there are have a choice of dozens/hundreds of tools for every task, petabytes of high quality assets - everything desinged to make it simple to produce high quality and high-definition content, but at the cost of it being generic, soulless, uninspired "products"

Great review! You summed up exactly why the OST has so much charm in it. Without it Gothic's world feels much less organic. There are couple ways to make music for a video game. You can put the most fitting songs from actual bands/composers like Tarantino does in his movies. Mostly games with cars do this, Flatout 2 is a pretty good example. There is the Dark Souls approach which you've mentioned in the video. With basically no music in the majority of the gameplay, they can afford to make specific themes for every important character and zone. Themes are also the climax for an area that's why they are so epic. Gothic 1 and 2 are the opposite, where music is all over the place and there's no real boss theme. And even without the detailed music you can recognize every location and situation from it. Other great games like Skyrim or Diablo 2 are quite good in this but Gothic 1 and 2 are the most memorable end enjoyable for me. The music is humble and decent at the same time and it never become boring. I usually mute the music in other games after dozens of hours and switch to other music or cast in the background. I never did this in Gothic, it sounds so pleasant even after these years. And I wanna mention Severance: BoD which is a hidden gem ARPG from 2001. Its music is also on spot, you guys should check Severance atmosphere music 4 and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The first two OSTs are so much an integral part of their games like Vangelis´score is part of Blade Runner. The music compliments and completes the action on screen. Even though you can enjoy the score on its own, the game itself can´t be seperated from the music without losing character and atmosphere.

difference in soundtrack: gothic 3 soundtrack overwhelms sometimes and sticks out, while being memorable it can be distracting. and gothic 1+2 soundtrack is always in the background, right of the hat i couldn´t name a single piece, but the music is always there in the background helping to set a certain tone or mood. i know the music in gothic 1 often sets a more bleak tone, since you yourself are trapped in an inescapeable barrier for the rest of your life and as soon as you arrive you get shown what you place in the food chain is: rock bottom, you are less than nobody bottom line: in gothic 1+2 the music helps you to feel like you are your character. and gothic 3 the music while nice itself is too dominating, i lost count how many jumpscares i had everytime the battle music started out of nowhere. especially since i knew every wolf, scavanger or boar could easily kill me because of those animation, or even better: invisible enemies

Gothic 3 doesnt have any trasitions it just plays the music.
@TheNocturnalRambler
@TheNocturnalRambler 4 года назад
On first impression, the Old Mine soundtrack doesn't stand out as one of Rosenkranz's better compositions because it doesn't have much in the way of musical structure, but I think it works as a good example of the soundtrack serving as background ambiance to set the mood for specific areas. Most of the "music" in the track are percussive elements meant to loosely mimic the types of noises you might hear in a mine -- metal clattering against metal, like someone dropped a pickaxe on a metal gangway, or the cog-wheel grinding in the background, or the distant thumping of impacts against the ore. What I really like about this track is that they don't just feel like random sound effects, as most of the sound you hear is actually drums, and it's arranged with an actual tempo and rhythm to it; even though it doesn't have pitched instrumentation or a melody, it still has a musical quality to it. The track also has a pretty "dark" sound to it, with mostly lower-pitched sounds and a lot of reverb echoing the percussive sounds to really simulate that feeling of being in an underground cavern. It really makes me wonder how well a track like this would fit in with something like Dark Souls, for instance, which is renowned for its lack of musical soundtrack in levels, instead relying on ambient noises to set the mood for each stage.

im kind of late in commenting but i still want to ;D i totally agree: g3 ost is instrumentally the best but is just over the top, which makes it feel just not right. in my opinion this is because rosenkranz had the opportunity to record the ost with real musicians and real orchestra etc. so they put extra effort in making it sound good - but it just does not fit as the digitally-(computer)written soundtrack from g1 and g2, which has a more lo-fi character to it and has less finesse in the "playing" compared to the human-played instruments of the real professional musicians, which makes it sound more grounded. also the musical transitions between the scenery in g1 and g2 works better in my opinion. as for your soundtrack comparison in jakhendar: i think they all worked somehow. the magical theme would fit a night-scenery. you are right - the key to the greatness of the g1/2 ost is that every scenerey has its unique, well fitting theme songs (and as i pointed out before: the computer made music, which is just a bit more limited to its expression, fits the game way better) man - g1 and g2 soundtracks are the best

Gothic 1 and 2 soundtracks are the type of soundtracks that you would listen at a low volume rather than maxim the volume of you're speakers/headphones, they are very chill and you could add a lot of them to a chill playlist and listen to it from time to time.

Even if I agree that Gothic has great music implementation compared to the competition, it is kinda sad that just reserving certain motifs and instruments for specific areas of the game world is still impressive. Video game music has a long way to go. Soundtracks for games could be a dynamic, magical, living thing if one would put the work in. Meanwhile, most studios just seem to order one or two dozen songs from a composer (which probably are good music in their own right) and then play those at quasi random throughout the game, basically offering nothing in terms of linking the story, visual and audial elements together. Woodtick in Monkey Island 2 is a great example of what composers could be doing with game music if they wanted to. Music for games needs a completely different approach than producing music for film, but the industry still hasn't understood this yet. Anyway, I love Gothic's music too, Kai is a beast.

I somehow hear original Melody even during no-ost section, I guess countless hours that I spent in gothic are to blame. I love hounting forest theme from first game and harbor theme from second the most, though really there are no out of place or annoying tracks in both games. And while I like the Witcher 3, I feel if the music there wes more simple and with less singing it would be an improvement

I am observing the sound development in games for a long time. I would actually say, that sound and music are the single most important factors in games. I noticed how street fighter 2 on snes had very good sound and music and strangely when the series progressed the sound quality dminished. Diablo 1 had superb music and sound. When I first entered the crypt and hit the first goblin with a sword, it sounded to impactful and accurate, corresponding perfectly with the animation and athmosphere. Each successive Diablo title had worse music and more bland sound effects. I would say almost every game progressed that way, and must be due to the extreme obsession of the gaming industry with graphics. I come from a time, when you spent more money on a Sound Blaster *sound* card than on a graphics card and the difference it made was huge. In Dune 2 you had the option to pc-speaker, adlib midi sounds, sound blaster and sound blaster 2 and all of those options had distinct sounds with the sound blaster 2 rumbling with absoultely fantastic combat sounds, mg fire, explosions and music. Nowadays it doesnt really matter anymore. All your pc specs are entirely there for determining the level of graphics display and maybe there is also a certain relationship between the gaming hardware and software industry behind this phenomenon. I could make a whole video about this probably myself. I really like watching your videos and listening to your thoughts. You focus on many of the same things that I do aswell when it comes to games. The details you notice, the ones that annoy you and the ones you like, I pretty much share aswell. I will give you an example from I own experience. In Diablo 2 for example you were supposed to play the Amazon character either with bows or with spears, but you could equip a sword and a shield aswell and the Amazon had her own attack animations for that even if probably a miniscule number of players ever appreciated that playstyle. I loved such details and I also played the Sorceress with swords and shields and other unusual equipment just to test the limits of how far I could get with this. Now I never played Diablo 3 for just one simple reason. Already in the demo version I picked the monk class and he attacked with fist and feet. However when you equipped a sword, your attack value would go up by the attack of the sword, but you would still attack with fist and feet like bruce lee. Things like this immediatly put me off of a game. It is just such nonsense and is obviously just done for economizing on the visual budget which is competely bloated with cutscenes and unnecessary exaggerations. Anyways I watched many of your videos now completely agree with all you say. I also liked your drova playthrough. Game designers really need to disconnect from the player a bit. They are so focused on pleasing an audience and fulfilling their expectations. They need to get back doing what they want and trying to actually fool the player and lay traps for him. I think the designer actually needs to hate the player a bit, but in a good way, because he is making a dangerous environment meant to shock, scare, fool, annoy and challenge the player to overcome its obstacles. I think the developers of Gothic 1 and 2 had some of that attitude and the very first scene of Gothic 1 expresses this perfectly.

I love the soundtracks of the Gothic series and agree with everything you said. :) As for your cool comparison with the public domain music, I think you actually picked a rather inappropriate example. The original game music was too full and melodic, more like in Gothic 3, which undermines the idea you were trying to portray. :D Anyway, I liked both public domain pieces you put in there. Maybe you were just too good in finding fitting ones. :D However, I preferred the first piece, "Soliloquy" to the other one.

Gothic 1,2's OST (especially 1) is a prime example of the idea of "less is more", as well as of the importance of music in establishing game's atmosphere. It shows that technical complexity is not important in the face of the choice of right instruments and pace.

Critics or not i don't think it matters. A good soundtrack doesn't really pass unnoticed even though may get overlooked when talking about a game. In movies and in games i'd say that sound and music it's probably half of the experience. Somewhat similar to smell regarding memory and how we remember things. It's about feelings, how we get them and how we remember them. Smell or music are like a sauce to a dish. Not the main attraction but clearly a worse meal without it. The games or movies i liked so much that became a reference for me had very good music that managed to blend with the images in a way that gave me strong emotions. So music and sound are very important to a creator that is looking to instill specific emotions on the viewer or player.

Gothic 3 has the best soundtrackof the series for putting in the CD and listening to it. Gothic 1 and 2 have the better ingame soundtracks. The two generic choices... I don't know, they are nice to listen to, but they sound "too nice" for Gothic. When I hear them I think of something more whimsical with fey and stuff. Gothic was always a more down-to-earth gritty game where these two pieces of music feel a little out of place between the cursing and morally grey. stuff you can do. I don't want to hear whimsical music when I am interfering in a war between bandits and pirates, while slaughtering the local wildlife for profit. ^^

I felt *exactly* the same way about G3's soundtrack, it tried way to hard to put itself into the foreground. I'd even go further and say, that due to it's overproduction and 'overcomposition' (I'm a layman) it is a musically worse soundtrack than 1 and 2, because one's ears get tired of it fairly soon. With the old games, I actually like to listen to their soundtrack without playing them, especially 2's.

@TheNocturnalRambler
@TheNocturnalRambler 3 года назад
I guess it depends on what you consider "pirate music." Nowadays, I typically think of the motifs, rhythms, and instrumentation associated with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies or drinking songs ("Yo Ho Yo Ho A Pirate's Life For Me" and "What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor"). Personally, I find Gothic 2's pirate beach music a solid fit for the environment, with the harmonica/accordion melodies being appropriate for what instruments pirates would actually have handy, and it has a pretty chill, laid-back sort of vibe overall, which fits the mood for their headquarters which serves primarily as a resting point between raiding the high seas or whatever. It's not portrayed as a riotous brawling, swashbuckling adventure hotspot, so the POTC music and drinking songs that I typically associate with pirates wouldn't work as well to me.

The soundtrack by Kai Rosenkranz is by far the best choice here. And it's a pity you have to live with the mediocre voices in that english version. Please try to hear the originally german voices to compare - even you don't understand it, but it fit's so much better I think. The tone the roughness the subtle irony and some dialects makes the experience even more deep, intensive and immersive :-)

I thought the no music version could've work really well with more ambient sounds. It makes the whole thing feel a little bit more foreign i feel... Forgotten worlds i always thought was one of the more generic and forgettable themes in the games but idk... As for gothic 3's soundtrack i think most of it actually fits in very nicely, it seems like this whole "the music sticks out too much" thing is just something someone said and now everyone mindlessly repeats it... or maybe the combat music being so annoying made all the other songs in the game stick out much more aswell or something

In my opinion, Morrowind has one of the best soundtracks and it blends perfectly to the game world, this also applies to Diablo 2. I also love the soundtracks of the Gothic 1-2 i found them really nice and they fitted really good to the game. When i played Gothic 2 for the very first time in my old laptop, the speakers were crappy, and i decide to invest 40 euros to buy myself some better speakers. I cannot describe how i felt hearing that soundtrack with some normal speakers. I was thrilled, the difference felt like i was playing a new game, and i just loved it. I will never forget the difference.

Yes, I blame Lord of the Rings of the increasingly bad quality of fantasy music. Howard Shore's score fitted LotR well because it was composed exactly for the kind of tone the movie was aiming for, dark and decadent, not whimsical. One of my favorite soundtracks was Final fantasy 7, it fitted the world perfectly, more industrial and synth in the city, in industrial facilities, but for the remake they changed it for a bombastic orchestration that doesn't feel right at all. I really think fantasy games need more mundane music, more down to earth music, like Gothic 1 and 2 and some parts of Diablo 2. No more orchestra, no more pseudo-epic soundtracks, please!
