It's always interesting to hear definitions/logic behind certain writing techniques. I often find that I'll write/create things influenced on what I've seen and read, and not always because I have an understanding of the methods behind them. The three side chara roles you explained really solidified why having characters like that work. It's like I knew it, but I never broke it down to figure out why it works so well. I'm glad you enjoyed! Thanks for taking the time to watch! I always liked the saying "everything that will be done, has been done, and will be done again." With writing, there are a lot of universal patterns. Thats why SO many stories (anime, books, movies, plays, etc) use them and "feel similiar" It makes sense that someone would notice similarities and "get it" without breaking it down!
You're an absolute king man, i love your videos you have helped me a ton, I am almost finished with my characters' backstories and next I will move to their personalities and a lot more is to come. @@MonitorComics No problem, as i am almost done with my backstories I just thought that there isn't really any videos that explain on how to actually type a backstory. I might not need it anymore, but I am sure a ton of people would, so you should probably create a video focusing on how to create good backstories for your characters, I think that would be awesome. I'm so excited for the 2nd saga even if I haven't yet started anything and until now I'm still learning how to draw💀💀 The 2nd saga have interesting characters and a great villain. There will be a character, it's a boy. He is eccentric and loud. He loves music and dancing but him and his gang's golden rule is NOT using music as a weapon. About the boy I'm talking about, his personality... He haves lots of personality lmao "please think of him as a playlist with different genres mixed together... " I really love this guy I wanna write him soon😭😭 About the villain well, let's just say his power is manipulating you mentally. Uhh... When his fingers touch your forehead, you'll hallucinate to seeing monsters and lots of scary things which also says things that demotivates a person. the more fingers the worst... Think of experiencing SLEEP PARALYSIS. But my MC will take 7 lmao the villain will attack him with one finger but it didn't have an effect he tried again one finger but it only shocked my MC and then when the villain finally got irritated he used his entire hands and finally my MC got a taste of his power but my MC will win at the end of course, shit I'm talking too much...
Honestly I didn't think that this video could help me this much since I didn't have a lot of problems with making sjde characters. Now I realised that they are even more important than I thought. My manga will deffinetly have many side characters, but I will slowly introduce all of them since my story is a very long one. Thank you for making the video!
TV Tropes informs us to use the five man band trope when writing a shounen series. They said Shounen specifically and may not apply to genres, but it still can be useful for series with a minimalist cast
Your content is easily digestible and I appreciate how clearly you speak, it helps me understand some of the more niche topics that I haven’t fully delved into yet. You’ve helped me fill in the parts of my characters that I’ve struggled to visualise (Partly due to constant everyday brainstorming) which helped me crawl out of the creative slump I had been in. Damn this was definitely helpful. I find it so hard to resist those mistakes mentioned when writing up side characters and the types mentioned were really helpful to understand especially with the nice examples you mentioned. Hell after watching I realised that the main enemies and heroes of my story I'm working on were all foil characters to each other lol, so thanks again for the vid. (Honestly I'm just a sucker for rivalries) I'm working on a doujin because I feel like it'd be good practice not just for creating a manga in general but because it'd be good to implementing original side characters in a pre-established universe as practice for actual side characters in my comic. Also, slightly unrelated, but you have a published manga series right? If so, do you know if is it available in the UK?

@@MonitorComics it definitely was! just finished working on one of my side characters who rivals the protagonist. he is this very talented guy who comes from a wealthy family. he directly contrasts the protagonist because he fights for fame and glory and is incredibly talented whilst the protagonist started from nothing and had to work very hard and doesn't care about others' opinions as long as he achieves his goal.

I'm working on a story to practice commitment and I've been having trouble thinking of how the other characters in the main group would tie in with the main plot (but as I'm typing this, I think it's because I' 'm working off of the ideas of what I want to happen and starting to over complicate things in my head. I also think I'm starting to develop tunnel vision.)
Your main cast should work towards a similar goal to your main character. For example in One Piece, the Straw Hats are all different people with different goals but it makes sense for them to join luffy to accomplish their goals For your characters to feel "a part of the story," they should be connected to the main plot in some sort of way

That's awesome to hear! A lot of times I hear artists putting off making their comic because "they dont feel ready," "their art isnt good enough," "it isn't the right time etc." The reality is, it'll never feel like the "right time." You just have to push yourself to do it. Once you take the first step its a lot easier to ride the momentum! Good luck!
I think JJBA do side characters really well, especially in part 3. In part 3, Polnareff, Kakyoin and Avdol get their own episodes in the part, with their own story while Jotaro is doing his own thing. For example: (SPOILER ALERT) Polnareff had the fight with the puppet guy (forgot his name), Polnareff, Kakyoin and Joseph were fighting Steely Dan while Jotaro was occupied. Polnareff and Avdol fought Wheel of Fortune while the MC was off screen. And lastly, Polnareff vs Alessi, Polnareff was struggling alot against Alessi but then he met up with Jotaro for badass kid Jotaro to finish off Alessi, Polnareff was the main part of the battle, but Jotaro was the one with the spotlight.
I don't get the 3 listings for "common mistakes when writing side characters". For one, they aren't side characters. Second, two of them are the antagonist. And three, its subjective which character you find more interesting. And using popularity makes no sense cause i can name many characters that are more popular than their respective protagonist.
I understand what they did in Boruto But I can't deny this wound will never heal, just like regeneration went off when Naruto lost arm( ha ha plot hole) and I had to drop the series. But it's cool you are breaking down your thoughts on examples.
Same... I was a big fan of Naruto, sure it wasn't perfect, but it had its charms. Its super disheartening to see characters like Rock Lee, Choji, Sai, etc get one shot by some of the newer villains. TBH some of Boruto's best moments were when Naruto and Sasuke were doing the fighting. Naruto's power system went off the rails a long time ago, throwback to when characters would use too much chakra and pass out. Now everyone can spam jutsu left and right It can sometimes feel like a slap in the face for older readers, especially with the latest development with Naruto and Kurama
My main problem in my head where all my stories are happening is that I focus to much on a side character and actually love him more then my m.c (Main Character)
maybe combine elements from both of them 🤔 or take a step back and remember it’s your story. nothing is finalized yet. it may take a lot of work, but you can rework the story so that the side character is the mc
Is it ok if my characters get together even if they're complete strangers to eachother? I'm talking shows like Power Rangers or Hot Wheels BF5, random characters are gathered to defeat bad guys but it isn't for no reason. Each character brings unique specialty. Even if they don't know eachother they still are willing to understand what's going on even if they never expected it. Is that ok?
Yes! That isn't too uncommon in most stories! That's usually how authors introduce the main cast. The most basic example is a kid transferring to a new school, all of his classmates will be total strangers. But the same thing can be seen in fantasy stories where a chosen hero has to join a Party with other random people
Saying L and Makima is a mistake is crazyyyyy. Popularity =/= Importance in a show. Because if you wanna get technical, Kobeni’s Car is more popular than Kobeni and yet Kobeni is more important than her car. Denji is the most important character in Chainsaw man Pt. 1 because the story is about fullfilment and becoming human. Same with L. L is more popular, but Light is the most important Character in death note. And the future diary…. We dont talk about that one
Yes! Character Arcs can take place during any part of the story. Some character arcs are short and the character learns a lesson or grow in a few chapters. Examples of that are like when a side character dies and the main character changes as a result of it Some character arcs are much longer like in My Hero Academia with Deku and Bakugou. It took nearly 300 chapters for Bakugou to come to terms with his issues and confront them Hope that helps!

He lived, taught of a kingdom, healed, hurt, suffered persecution, died & rose again for us. animal sacrifices & 100s of laws was once the way, but His blood has become the perfect atonement for us. No fancy rules just relationship. Jesus loves you loads, I truly recommend giving Him a try
If you structure your story like this it quickly becomes formulaic and boring it's better to think of all characters in your story as real human beings living their own lives and not structure them around the main character, and be just tools to further develop the main character. these are manga tropes and regardless if it's a manga or novel the story should come first don't get stuck on what's the norm in the medium just create a interesting story and don't follow rules because then your story will be generic trash
As a published author who has worked with editors and publishers, I'll be the first to tell you that your work will only be taken seriously if it is "well-written." "Well-Written" is subjective, but there are MANY theories, formulas, and patterns for a reason, because they help you construct a "well=written" story Like you said, it is better to break a few rules where you can to make your work feel fresh, but if you completely ignore every technique that has been SUCCESSFUL in the past, you're looking to be self-published for the rest of your life I've had editors specifically send me articles about plot structure formulas that Marvel/DC Artists have used FOR YEARS. If it isn't broke, don't fix it The purpose of my videos isn't to be the "final say," it is to give everyone a solid foundation to create a balanced story. Once they have that, they can make changes, experiment, and break the rules where they see fit You're welcome to disagree, but that's all based on my experience working with editors and publishers as well as being on a panel of judges reviewing hundreds of story pitches and selecting the best 10.
