I LOVE Tae's vocals, his acting, and the MV creativity. Everything was outstanding. I have so many possible interpretations for the MV. One of mine also matches your take on it. It also came to mind how it could symbolize how idols keep their private life hidden so they don't get fan backlash. At first he was alone and everyone else aka the fans were happy. Then he is publicly happy in love with his girlfriend and everyone else aka the fans are unhappy. In either case their being oblivious to his personal needs causes him extreme harm. In the end he wakes up beside himself because only he can decide what is best for himself and the smirk is hoping for a positive outcome.
If you read the lyrics to this song Fri(end)s and the song Friends that V and Jimin made. They both align perfectly and make perfect sense. Fri(end)s is like a continuation to the first song Friends. 🫰🏽💜
The true lesson of this song is that we should love ever selves first before loving others and we will not feel alone if we will enjoy our own company 💙and we should not fall in love so quickly because it can destroy us. By the way the song was so nice and v's voice was so heart warming 💜
Love the song! Even though he may have died happy in the second scenario, the MV is hard to take as it's difficult to see our Tae lying there bleeding out at all! I wasn't sure how I felt after watching it the first time. I've watched it a few more times, but I think I'll stick to streaming the song rather than the MV for a while. Thanks for your explanation. I'm so glad to see you exploring a BTS video again! I know they put out as much content as all the other groups you study combined, so I understand why you don't talk about them as much as you used to. But have you noticed that all their solo projects include callbacks to their group work and sometimes even to the Bangtan Universe? For instance, V walking into traffic here mirrors Jungkook walking into traffic in "I Need U."

..you are never alone (or you never feel lonely*) when you enjoy your own company. *my own words you put words into my ponderings! cos many married frens asked me that, aren't you lonely? but later told me, sometimes when i am with my hub & children, i feel lonely* like you (*frens who think that cos i am a widow). why is that? now i juz fwd this vid to them when they ask. idk about others, i am alone physically but i don't feel lonely for a prolonged time. i am always happier chilling by myself or with a fren. Perhaps due to the close knit community i live in. Surrounded by good people & having positive interactions daily, may have shielded me from loneliness. Hmmm.. i know how alone is like. When I look at the surface, I agree with you completely and that the whole point is about self-love. It's when I try looking more deeply that I see a different world completely telling its own story. Whether this is intended or not by them is something to think about. It indeed starts with being alone in a world where everyone has already found their way of living themselves while the main character is not taking care of himself as a person who loves themselves. That would be the surface outlook. However when you try looking deeper regarding this part, you need to first understand a person's value before you can really say that. You don't know what he truly is eating even if he is eating out of a box. Next to that, maybe he values other things like his time and wants to focus more on other things. It's just that the fridge is indeed empty and could imply that he indeed isn't taking care of himself. It could also be that he isn't home often or just came back from a trip and still needs to stock up. Anyway usually it does mean not taking care of yourself but when you are dealing with quirks, you can't really go with normal logical thinking patterns 😂. When going to the next scene in which he is alone and the people surrounding him are all in relationships. You can see that he is alone but when you see the people surrounding him as his Internal voice, the story can change by a lot. While he is indeed alone, he is trying to love himself in as many ways as possible to find himself. To seek who he truly is and when he goes outside and gets hit with a car, he makes the decision to share/give the love he should have used for himself to fit in the mould of societal pressure and get into a relationship. Let's not even talk about all the possible types of relationships he can choose from numbing him into thinking whether he might be atypical maybe. The lost look into the camera while everyone is in love can be seen that way while him looking around while also partly ignoring could be him trying to figure out his likes and dislikes while not trying to be bothersome towards others and carrying on with his own life. That smirk itself can have different meanings from not having what others have to seeing the truth of those relationships or intentions making you feel uncomfortable, as these are either his allergies or character traits he simply instinctively dislikes. Probably not knowing that his particularity and quirky personality in which he does react more differently than the average person decreases the probability of falling in love more than usual. Let's not even talk about how your intelligence levels also play a role with that too 😢. I feel like this definitely connects with the first part of the lyrics. Where he kind of tells the story about being different and his potential partner also being like a homework assignment. Indicating that it isn't something he dislikes but allergies character traits he needs to understand so that he sees and understands what the other person means. Whether this is referring to women being difficult to understand what they actually mean with their words and actions could also be a possibility 😂. I think we all know not to dive into that to keep the peace 😊 Although what we see on the surface is that he is deeply in love with his partner, the people around him are harming each other through all the different means possible and eventually breaking up. This shows that although he seems to be in love with his partner on the surface level, he is actually disrespecting himself by being in a toxic relationship or not making his boundaries clear. It seems to look good but it's actually harmful and therefore the second time getting hit, he realizes that this is not what he wanted even though he is following societal pressure to be in a relationship and makes the decision to choose for himself and really start valuing who he is using that love to first love himself before ever thinking about going into another relationship. So when he wakes up the second time and says hey to himself, he kind of is confirming the obvious that he shouldn't have compromised to be in a relationship instead of finding someone who would love him as he is. It could also be that due to not having enough self-love that caused him to not make is boundaries clear when they were being violated, the relationship broke while it could have been avoided by clear communication. This is just the viewpoint that I see when looking at the video itself only and the struggles along the way on this road. When you add the lyrics, this picture can change to a certain extent. Rather than being in a harmful/toxic relationship, it's more about how they differ so much from each others way of communicating that they see that as the other being mean/hurtful etc... it's just that they really need to understand their ways of communication but that realization sadly didn't come in time in de video while in the lyrics some days, when these cheers die down sounds quite hopeful in which this lyric part changes over time as understanding each other becomes more clearer over time and acceptance of each other quirks reaches a more comfortable level. Also when you look at being friends at one point and enemies at other times indicates their differences in their bias and allergie communication style being different due to their values and what are important to them differ. Although they haven't changed, by doing their homework they have now seen their flaws of understanding each other and can look back at it with laughter and be more comfortable with it. In which before the last some day part, they are trying their best not to fight tomorrow indicating to be more aware of the things important to each other showcasing their respect to one another. The only thing I can't seem to decipher is the seven summers and cold winters longer than the countless promises and memories 🤔. We have for example a saying of someone having long fingers, indicating to be very charitable. So I don't want to misrepresent this part. It could be about emotions or the on and off friendship or the ups and downs etc... but it could also be something entirely different. Some cultures use such words just to describe their feelings, while in other it can mean something specific 🤷🏾♀️.
You're actually the first person that tries to think out of the box that it's not just only about self love (that's just part of it). This week RM posted 2 songs in his Instagram Story that I think may be hinting towards the meaning of V's song. It's not the lyrics of these songs but their meaning you have to look up on the internet (there are seperate articles with the meaning of the lyrics)

There's actually a line in the song that RM posted that talks about a toxic relationship and 'Down' refers to Down Road which is a road where a lot of people die (V sings at one point 'down' and he dies twice on the road)
