The Impossible Route: Death Valley is a 7-day EPIC gravel cycling adventure over one of the hardest courses in the world. Two riders, Jeremiah Bishop and The Vegan Cyclist, attempt to ride bicycles along a well-established motorcycle course called “The California Backcountry Discovery Route (CABDR).
Using the Strava Route Builder ( / strava ) the riders charted a 760-mile gravel course inspired by the CABDR. Their route starts in Yuma, Arizona, traverses the Mojave Desert and the heart of Death Valley, and finishes in the shadow of the Sierras. This course had never before been attempted on bicycles, Both JB and VC had to carry all their tools, food, and water from start to finish of each stage. Each day has its own unique hurdles to overcome, from cycling through sand to finding water. This film follows that story. This may be one of the most grueling weeks of gravel bicycle riding that has ever been captured on film. This is episode 1, season 2, of a cycling documentary series about finding the hardest multi-surface roads in the world.
Everyone has their own personal "impossible route." It might be climbing a volcano or just finishing a single mile. The Impossible Route documentary series is all about capturing the story and the adventure of cyclists trying to accomplish what might be considered IMPOSSIBLE. This endeavor is not about racing; it’s about finding adventure, pushing the limit, and then going beyond what is thought to be possible.
This is episode 1 of 5, find all 5 episodes here: • THE IMPOSSIBLE ROUTE (...

///FAQs\\\
Q: Did you have full SAG?
A: The rules we set for ourselves stated we could NOT take ANYTHING from the crew DURING the ride. But we can get anything from strangers along the road if they offered or we could buy supplies from a store. Problem is, no stores…ANYWHERE.
Q: Why gravel bikes?
A: To see if it could be done! We each ran our own Canyon Grail for this expedition. I truly believe they were the FASTEST option, but boy was that sand deep! I recommend a motorcycle if you plan to do this route. Kidding, but you could try the Canyon Exceed.
Q: What tires did you run?
A: We ran IRC double cross, 42s in the rear and IRC MTB 2.0 tires in the front.
Q: How did you fuel on the bike?
A: It was EXTREMELY difficult to eat and drink while riding the gravel sections. But we had Flow Formulas in all of our bottles, gels, blocks, and burritos from chef Biju Thomas. We consumed around 4-5k calories each day while on the bike.
Q: What was in the bags?
A: Apidura supplied the bags and we loaded them down with as much water and food as possible. We also carried a spare tire, C02s, tools, and a satellite phone that never actually worked
Q: Where did you sleep?
A: JB and VC slept in a tent every night except two. Two of the nights the whole crew got hotels.
Q: What was the gearing was used?
A: VC ran a 1x 42 -10/50 Sram eagle and JB ran a 1x 34 - 10/34
Q: How hard was this REALLY? Don’t lie dude!
A: Whatever this looks like on film, it was 1,000,000 times harder in real life.
Q: Can we donate?
A: I cant stress enough how much that helps (www.paypal.com/paypalme/vegan...)

So just to get this straight. Think of the amount of organizing and planning required before this even happened. Then the sufferfest which commenced for 7 days with limited water and food. Add-in 70 hours of footage to go through and then edit into a compelling story. Uploaded for free to watch without annoying ads to interrupt this incredible journey that demonstrates the very best in the human spirit. To even have the right to press the thumbs down is a crime in itself. Thank you, VC, Jeremiah and all behind the scenes. Money sent, I'd pay for this quality anytime.

Thanks Matthew. Truth is this is a passion project. For sure SO many things could have gone wrong as we see in the end but we know this inspiration especially during the pandemic was and IS our mission. To help people re frame what they CAN do because as we discover ourselves we become better. Cheers freind!

WOW...BRO...This was a lot! It was a lot to plan, it was a lot to ride, it was a lot to edit... There was over 70 hours of footage and so telling this story right was incredibly difficult. But I poured my soul into this thing, SO MUCH had to be cut out, and maybe one day I can show the parts that didnt make it into this cut. I know its long, but I didnt put a single mid roll ad and I didnt break it into 7 parts because I feel like you need to follow the story in one sitting to really capture the feeling. We did get a budget for sponsorship, which paid for all logistics and crew. With that being said I personally have 200+ hours into this project and Jeremiah put in close to that before the project even got rolling. So IF...IF you watched this and thought it was worth a buck or two, I cant really stress just how far that small donation would go to helping JB and myself create more of these. If this was worth your time, here is a link to donate. (paypal.me/vegancyclist ) It actually goes to my smoking hot wife Kristin, but Im sure she will pass it along... or at least part of it ;) Also, if you're a busy bro and cant sit through this film, Canyon has daily uploads that are 3-4 mins. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0vahvtEyXTU.html Interested in a free trial of Strava premium to build your own epic route? use this link for a 30 day trial (www.strava.com/subscribe/impossibleroute ) ///FAQs\\\ Q: Did you have full SAG? Lots of good messaging here. I completed an Ironman triathlon this past summer in Lake Placid NY and one of the things Tyler said really resonated. He pointed to the bands on his bars and he mentioned all the support crew he had that motivated him to keep going...that's the same thing that got me through my own longest day. I learned many things that day, especially that my limits are far beyond what I perceived them to be. But two things that I really learned is: #1 Just Keep Going! #2 Everyone who knew I was on this journey, everyone who I told about it, everyone who encouraged me, everyone who BELIEVED in me...I just knew I couldn't let them down. I kept going not only for myself, but for them. Kudos on your accomplishments and as usual, your positive content. Inspiring for sure!

I really appreciate the effort that went into bringing us this educational & interesting adventure. If I may gently suggest - guys, to outsiders it's a bit odd (or obnoxious) to be followed by a film crew in a vehicle and still have to ask other people for water because of some "self-support" rules. This doesn't actually tell us if the ride could be done "self-supported" because these guys are doing it with the safety net of the crew, who are always there if they can't find bemused trail angels. Having said that, thanks for creating and sharing the adventure.

Brilliant effort to both of you for this second epic adventure - not sure how you ever top that one but I’m willing to wait and watch. Yes we’d heard of the accident to Tyler and glad it’s a dent to the ego not surgery and wishing you the best of recovery so we can see that Vegan guy fly again. Wow, just simply wow!!

I just can't describe how inspiring you guys are. You, Tyler, made me a vegan, a climber, a cyclist at my 30. Hopefully we may get a chance to ride together someday. My best from Istanbul/Turkey.

Great documentary! JB having rode with you 2x a year for going on 11 years. This is the first time I’ve seen you suffer. In a sick way that gave me pleasure. I’ll give it to you. You don’t whine as bad as I do. Very motivational as I sit on my couch watching over my covid +30lb belly. I’m riding tomorrow no matter what. It might only be a few miles but I got get back out there. Oh and I’ll take your advice you give me every year at the training ride for alpine loop. “Hey Paul, maybe you should have just salads for dinner” I’m going to see what is possible for this 55 year old guy. Thanks fellas! Again Great Documentary!

Hey Paul. Its been a tough year for so many. We dedicate this film to all of you out there who braved tough times and will clip back in and get back out there. We were scared to invest the time and money to pull this off. But we also knew it could inspire and bring joy and hope to many. Cheers.

The most epic journey ever followed up with the most VC way to end it. In all seriousness though Tyler, you and Jeremiah friggin' killed it, and you should be nothing short of absolutely stoked and proud of what you guys accomplished. You truly are an inspiration to so many of us, and the realness of not only this video, but all your videos, is what makes your channel such a gem. Congrats on doing the impossible. Now learn how to crash properly 😉

Sir, I watched your movie now 2 times. I mean, this is a 1h and 40 minutes long proper documentary. Who watches a movie twice in a row with only 24 hours in between? Sick bro. Incredible adventure. We actually got to see some of the real you. Which is always interesting. Even a little bit of Jeremiah's true him... I miss the big American parks. I do have it OK here in old Switzerland where the roads are perfect and all. But wow, what an adventure! Respect BRO!

Great video, to you and the crew! I hope you’re healing well and a hello to your family Tyler coming in there on the end that is the most important support crew a cyclist will ever need as motivation in life.

Just to talk the real deal here.…the guy goes on an insane effort bike trip, has near death experiences, pushes through, makes it to the finish line and then breaks his femur by showing off in a parking lot at the end of the expedition. That's literally the most epic ending ever! Made my day! (Get well soon though!)
