You are a great analyzer Levi!! Thanks for this!! C Christian, Eddie Lang, Oscar Moore, J Bryant, Scotty and Lenny Breau giants among others .. Peters Övik Sweden
Back in about 2008 I was playing a gig in The Jazz Bar Edinburgh and my friend by the name of Josh Seex was also playing with his band. He ended a song by playing a chord using this technique on the left hand. I remember pretty well cos I was pretty jealous he could do that lol.
Levi you are awesome first. Do you or anyone else know how I can get ahold of Scotty ? I found his music page but no response from him. Does he live in Cincinnati?
As far as I know,Scotty still lives in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area. I haven't seen him play in a few years so I can't say for sure. But one thing I can tell you for sure is that if you are lucky enough to see this guy in person not only will you see one of the best guitar players that you will ever see,but you will also meet one of the nicest people that you will ever meet. He has no ego at all.
Julien Lage refers to this thumb technique. Sometimes you just need extra digits and the thumb is one option. Others include the human nose, or the edge of a piece of furniture or better still; any band members with a spare hand (I've done this when I had no capo)
I was teasing - it will write out whatever you put into it - that's what I do for a living, there aren't any shortcuts, but I'm always here if people need me
Maybe easier with some WD-40 liberally applied ;) Thanks for the great vid and for recognizing and promoting Scotty Anderson's virtuosity. He will be going into the Cincinnati Jazz Hall of Fame May 19th 2024
I believe you can rig up a midi guitar, yes. It's good for note input, but I don't think it's going to do a good job of tracking rhythm, then there's all your articulations.
Great Levi !! Have you heard Marcus Tardelli ? A brazilian monster player! He take this technique to the next level. Mind Blowing! Obviusly is another monster player haha!
Lonnie Mack DID IT TO. by the way; THEY were Friends AS well as HAVIN a common RESPECT for ONE ANOTHER... Thought you might wanna KNOW THAT little FACT. WHAT I SAY IS TRUE. KNOW THEM BOTH. A FATHER N A FRIEND
username342 well you see how we're communicating now, and using words? We didn't invent any of these words, you were shown them, or you heard people using them in context and worked out what they meant and how to use them. Transcription is that, but refined. It allows you to understand and play whatever you like. Not only is it incredible for the ear, but in the long term you find you not only have the ability to play anything you hear on a record or whatever, but that mystical skill of being able to play whatever comes into your mind while improvising. Transcription isn't the goal, it's the method.
username342 it was probably some Brent Mason or Albert Lee solos. Doing enough of those helped me understand the double stops these players use, once my ears were tuned into it, it's much easier to hear when someone like Scotty is doing it.
