Dhammaddhaja Jataka (#384)
In this video, the Buddha tells the story of the past about a dishonest bird.
Wat San Fran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.
Check out the playlist #AnimatedBuddhistStories by Wat San Fran to explore the complete series.

This story, as told by the Buddha himself, was a past life of the Buddha. At that point he was not a Buddha yet. He is what is known as a bodhisatta, a person in training to be a future Buddha. Therefore, he is still capable of actions that lead to bad kamma. It is typical for a bodhisatta to good and evil in each of their lives. It is part of his (and our) journey of learning. Through his mistakes (oftentimes ending in hell or undesirable rebirths), he learns about rebirth and the suffering within. This is the same path that all flawed beings walk, until we achieve enlightenment.

@@watsanfran hmm makes sense. Also, this jataka resembles the one where a jackal tried to fool the rats(Bilara Jataka). This means that our previous lives and present life are related and we encounter the same experience again and again unless we learn something out of it.

Was the deceitful monk none other than Devadatta himself?

Why do a lot of the Buddha’s lives take place in Benares, and take place during the reign of the king Brahmadatta?

There are many ways to think about this. 1. It could actually be the same place and same name. We are creatures of habit. We tend to like to do the same things over and over. We repeat the same roles over and over. It would not be surprising if were to be reborn into the same role and think and feel the same things. 2. It is very common for the Bodhisatta to generate great kamma. In many of their lives, he is reborn as a world level monarch. He will usually rule an empire that spans the globe. This is similar to the Roman, Mongol, Ottoman, and Byzantine Empires. It was discussed by Pali scholars that the name given to that world monarch was Brahmadatta and the empire was named Benares. 3. If could actually not be the same place and name. Benares could just be a general name given to locations in the past. Something that is comparable to living in prosperity and comfort as in the Gotama Buddha era. King Brahmadatta could just be the name that symbolizes a great leader. By using these names, we easily recognize the greatness held within, if there were to use different names, we might not recognize the significance. For example, in a RU-vid clip, a monk explained how in every Buddha’s time, the tree he sits under to become enlightened will be called a Bodhi tree, no matter what the actual species of the tree is.

@@watsanfran Thank you for this clarification as I always believed that the words of the Great Teacher holds immense wisdom and truth. I was in search of this answer but could not find it anywhere. And I also want to Thank you for making these inspiring videos. it actually helped me to understand Dhamma, How the process of birth and rebirth actually works and how to apply these principles in my daily lives.
